Safari's media capabilities

Does the iPod Touch web browser currently have the ability to play web-based video? For instance, if I go on FoxSports.com is it possible to play the highlight videos that site features? If I go on a site that features podcasts, or streaming audio, such as the internet feed from an out-of-market radio station, can Safari play the audio, or, if not, can it be augmented with an available plug-in to do so?

Hello.
The Safari browser doesn't seem to support streaming but it will playing some basic audio and video files if they are straightforward links on Web pages. Types I've tried that work are MP3, AAC, AVC.
In particular audio and video podcasts seem to work fine from Web pages. If you can find the RSS feed for a podcast and click it, Safari will display the list of podcasts and you can select which to play from the list.
Sites that use Real or WMA or that use streaming (via Flash or RTSP) don't seem to be supported.

  • Safari, Windows Media Player, and Proxy Servers

I'm trying to watch streaming video of comedy central's Daily Show but its not working. I hit play and I get "-19422" in the play bar. I can't find anything about this anywhere online. I used to be able to do play these videos on my old computer but have had no success. It has to be in Windows Media Player format. I have Windows Media Player and have streamed from other sites. The only thing I have found is that the comedy central page requires a proxy to view streamng video. I have contacted my ISP and they say no such proxy is needed and I should be able to view the page. Am I suppose to guess on the proxy server? The comedy central site says it supports safari and apple computers but it doesn't seem like it. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone have any ieas for solving this problem?
PS- This is what comedy central says.... Also my ISP is Time Warner Cable's RoadRunner
"If you are on a Mac, make sure your Player is set to only use the proxy, and disable TCP or UDP checking as this will cause timeouts.
If you choose the Use proxy option and do not know the proxy server name or port number you should use, contact your Internet service provider or network administrator. "

    Hi,
The videos work fine for me with Safari 2.0.2 and OS X 10.4.3. The section of the help file you quoted appears to be referring to a corporate firewall setup rather than a typical home setup - you shouldn't need to change any of the defaults for Windows Media Player.
A Google search for that error code you received mentions Flip4Mac in a couple of places - do you have that installed?
If so, try disabling it to see if that is the cause of your issues.

  • Safari/Windows Media Player problem.

I have a bit of a problem at the moment with viewing video content on some sites - when I click the link/button/whatever this message appears -
"Safari can't display content on this page
Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesn’t support. The application “Windows Media Player” may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?"
When I do try WMP, it opens ok, tries to play it, then gives me this message-
"The file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"

Do you also have Flip4Mac installed?
If not, Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows Media Player for OS X but Flip4Mac will continue to be supported which adds a plugin for Safari and other browsers that should work.

  • Safari - sreamed media

I am trying to view live TV and listen to live radio in Safari. The media is in a foreign language. Safari does not play it. Sometimes I get a message asking for Windows Media Player.
Can Safari even play live media from the internet?
If not how can a Mac owner view live media, and in a foreign languages?
    I use Safari version 1.3.1. Mac OS X 10.3.9.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'll ask the same message the Web page asked of you.
Do you have Windows Media Player for Mac installed?
    How about Real Player?
Both use "plug-ins" (little helper applications) that allow Safari to play media content inside a Web page. Many sites use Real Media (.rm format) for audio and Windows Media Video (.wmv format).
    Both players are "free".

  • Could we get a new category? Plug-ins - Safari- Windows media - Flash

I posted this on the iMacs (early 2006) forum but it seems better placed here.
With the new Intel iMacs, it doesn't make sense to post over on the other threads (eg. Safari) when the issues are undoubtedly related to the new iMacs.
It would be great for us to keep each other up-to-date when plug-ins and a solution to Windows Media become available.

  • Safari & windows media player - help

new to mac and I feel like an idiot. trying to download windows media player and have followed all the steps on previous posts, but still having problems.
Downloaded stuffit, and then wmp 9 ( for mac). Everything downloads fine except that there is no windows media plug-in in the Internet plug in folder in Library. How do i get it in there? is it something really simple that I'm missing? Also, previous posts seem to indicate that you just can't watch CNN video from the link on their website?

Tania, after Windows Media Player installer downloads to your Desktop, double click the installer to begin the installation. After it installs, Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility. You'll have to set the preferences for the Player, but it is possible to watch the free videos on CNN.com.

  • Safari windows media player, cnn, mac OS X ( 10.4,3)

When i try to play an cnn media coverage i get this message" no windows media detected" i have the latest version. can anyone help me

Yes, that plugin chart is useful. There are a couple of esoteric plugins that could be added.
Some of the other plugins I have are DjVu, MrSID - both form LizardTech; PDF and Word Browser Plugins - both from Shubert|it (I don't have the Word plugin installed, but it is available) and the Macromedia Authorware Web Player. I have a couple others as well.
Another plugin that is not yet ready for prime-time (and not yet ready for Intel Macs at all), in my opinion, is Flip4Mac.

  • General Media Capabilities

    Hi everyone.
I have some general questions regarding the media that the blackberry can play.  Here is the gist of my questions before I provide some additional details to them.
Can you create a playlist of videos?  When you select one from your list, it doesn’t continue to the next one when they finish.
Can you continue to have a movie play in the background or must it be open to be running?
Can you send video to the outside screen?  (or other things like camera and speaker phone calls)
Can you control music playback (ie skip or previous) using the left and right soft keys?
So overall I am trying to have more control from the blackberry (it’s a 8220 perl flip) when it is closed.  So I can use it as my portable media player/device and save a lot of money.
When playing mp4 files that have been copied and pasted into a folder on the blackberry memory card, there is no video.  This is ok, I have found that if I use the media manager to load the videos, they play fine.  At the moment for these particular mp4 files, I don’t care about watching the video, I just want to be able to listen to it (which I can).  My question comes down to creating a play list of this type of media.  Currently when I play the video it only repeats the same song over and over, and doesn’t move on to the next.  I am sure it should be possible for it to play all, because when I did my first test of 2 mp4 video clips and a flv file, it played the two mp4 files in a loop, but ignored the flv.  When I hit the “menu” key I could see the play next option with a check mark.  Ever since that first test I have been unable to get a “play next” option on the menu to reappear.  I can listen to the video with the screen closed just as if it was a song so I can’t imagine their not being a playlist option.
When I transfer and convert the mp4 clips using the media manager I get the video, but the instant that I close the screen or try and exit to the home screen, or pull up the menu, the media stops playing.  Is there a setting to have the media play on in the background.  I figure this should be possible because I can return to the home screen or close the phone and have the video with no picture continue to play as if it was a song if I don’t convert it.  Further observations regarding question 1:  When mp4 files are played (converted and transferred through the media manager) they also don’t play through a playlist either.
This is a continuation of question 2, I would like to send the video to the outside screen of the phone, if possible.  Previous phones I have had (flip phones with and outside screen) have been able to display the camera on this outside screen, continue speaker phone calls with the phone closed etc but the blackberry terminates everything when I close the screen.  Is their an option to have the blackberry ignore the effects of closing the screen in a setting or something?
Lastly when dealing with regular playlists of music you can close the phone and the music continues, as desired.  The volume can be adjusted using the side buttons, I would now like to find out whether you can somehow program the side buttons to pause, skip or go backwards through songs in your playlist.
     Thanks a lot.

as far as I know, there is no playlist for video files. f I were you, I would extract the audio track of your videos and put them on your device. Then you can use playlists.
    TOH_IRRD wrote:

I never managed to do that.

Are you talking about the Pearl Flip ? If so, I think you can look in the "Pearl 8200" boar. Maybe the issue has already been raised and answered. If it has not, you can open a discussion there with just that question.
    TOH_IRRD wrote:

Depending on the OS version of your device, you can. If your OS version is 4.5 or higher, you can use the volume keys togo to previous or next track.
when you are listening to a file, in any application (Media or Browser or Message or any app) : click on VolumeUp key for 2s. at first, the volume will increase one step, then decrease one step and go to next file.
same for previous file with VolumeDown key.
If there is a Mute key on your device, I guess it enables you to pause/play the file.

  • Safari suddenly no longer accessing some websites

I am on OS 10.4.9 using Safari 2.0.4. I'm aware both are outdated, but for various reasons I have chosen not to upgrade because I haven't really had any need to. But some weirdness has happened regarding my Safari and this is perhaps more a curiosity question than anything else (in part because everyone I talk to offline is suggesting I switch to Firefox or Opera anyway).
My Safari has developed a case of "Sudden Website Dropsy" or SWD. That is when a website that worked perfectly well a couple of days before no longer works properly, or at all, a few days later.
There are 3 examples I can cite:
    1. CNN.com. The site still works, but the formatting is messed up, and videos often cause Safari to close.
    2. TVshowsondvd.com . I was able to access this site up until Tuesday. Then it gave me a 404 error thereafter. I thought the site was dead or offline until I discovered I could still access it using an old version of Netscape. I contacted the webmaster and he said he'd changed nothing and has no idea why Safari overnight would forget the site existed.
    3. Attempts to access any of the Wikia websites results in an instant quit by Safari. Again, this was an overnight development. The main Wikipedia site, however, still works fine. Again, I'm able to access the Wikia sites using my old, unsupported, outdated Netscape browser, which seems to suggest Wikia didn't upgrade beyond Safari 2's capabilities.
I know we're always supposed to upgrade our programs and systems and the reason for me not doing so is a mixture of paranoia (the last major upgrade I did cost me my ability to access to some major work-required software so I'm willing to sacrifice some bells and whistles to be able to keep my job running smoothly), but I don't feel this is one of those cases where I'm trying to make my old Safari do something it isn't capable of. These are websites that worked fine days or, at most, weeks ago, so there shouldn't be an access issue. The sudden 404 on that one site is perhaps the most puzzling.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Alex

Web sites change over time, using new coding, new technologies, etc. You're using an older version of Safari, and it has issues that can easily cause you to be unable to access certain web sites or cause Safari to crash. That is why you need to upgrade to 10.4.11 and the latest version of Safari. No tonly does it fix numerous bugs, but also closes a variety of security vulnerabilities.
You gain nothing by not doing it, and you risk everything. Your paranoia can be solved if you simply get a backup plan in order for your Mac and follow it. One of these days something bad will happen, at the worst possible time. I've yet to see or hear of anyone who lost their data by upgrading to 10.4.11, so now is the time to do it.

  • DVD Drive Doesn't recognize Media Disc

I have an Envy dv7. Product # B6B75AV. DVD drive hpBD MLT UJ260
I have a program that will copy a dvd from the source, dvd drive #1, to the target same dvd drive #1.
When it is done copying the disc it ejects the original and asks to have a writable media disc inserted.
When I insert the DVD  the drive doesn't recognize the blank dvd, keeps asking for it, and when I put it in, it spits back out saying to insert a writable disc.  I have used the blank DVD+R for burning other things so it should work.  I tired putting in 4 different blank discs to make sure the disc was ok.
Is there anyway to find out for sure whether this DVD writer uses DVD+R or DVD-R?
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Has any one used Safari with TreasuryDirect?

TreasuryDirect is asking for "A Web Browser That Supports 128-Bit Encryption". I cannot find any information about Safari's encryption capabilities. Has any one used Safari at TreasuryDirect?
    Thanks gameMan

    Hi,
Safari does support 128-bit encryption, as mentioned on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/
"Safari also uses strong 128-bit encryption when accessing secure sites such as your bank or an online store, so you can transmit account and payment information with confidence."
I can't comment on TreasuryDirect however - hopefully someone else can answer that part

  • Oh, my GOD!

I can't believe this thing! This is my first Mac computer ever; iMac G5; amazing. I just can't believe how many things you can do at once without lagging up cough*windows*cough! It's insane! I seriously had every single program on the thing running at once, no lag what so ever, and all on 512 MB of RAM! And those dang widgets, so cool! Overall, I'm in love. Thank you apple!

And it sure is fun to have all your PC friends over and show off FrontRow, Spotlight, Exposé, Dashboard, iLife '06, and Safari's RSS Capabilities to them while they can keep dreaming about being able to run WinXP on their own (HUGE and UGLY) computers without buggy software. Media Center edition is somewhat like Front Row, and Windows Desktop Search (EXTREMELY slow) is a direct copy of Spotlight. And of course there is Konfabulator which is like Dashboard. But there is nothing even remotely similar Exposé, iLife, or Safari RSS on Windows, even with extra add-on software you have to pay for. ALl my PC friends tell me they dream of Apple releasing all their software for PCs. That would allow Apple so much profits if only people knew about it!

  • Interactive buttons in Indesign CS6

I'm currently working on a pdf interactive project. A requirement of the project is to have the music looped with buttons to control it which I have done, but I must be missing a step.  I've added music and have made the "play", "pause", "resume" and "stop" button on the master page and I've also added actions to the buttons as well. When I export the file as a pdf interactive and open it in Acrobat, the music does start playing when the button is pressed, etc. but as soon as I go to the next page and try to "pause" or "stop"  nothing happens or else I have a nice cannon effect as the song start ups again while the other is playing from the previous page.  I'm quite new to Indesign and any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Playing sounds/music in PDF is page-specific. You can't control the sounds/music throughout the pages. Only on the page you're on. This is a limitation of PDF and has absolutely nothing to do with Adobe InDesign.
If you want to know more about PDF media capabilities and limitations, your best bet is the Acrobat forums. (Acrobat has more controls than InDesign is able to access when it creates interactive PDFs.)
The best forum is the Rich Media/3D forum for Acrobat:

  • Airport Extreme - PS3 - DNS Error

I've been using the Airport Extreme as my home network router for quite some time but now the PS3 seems to have issues with it. I've run the PS3 in wireless mode for a few weeks without a hassle but then I wanted to use its media capabilities and stream music and films from the shared disk, using a media server. This proved too much for the wireless setup as all media halted once or twice every minute to buffer. I realised I needed to stream heavy media over an Ethernet wire instead so I set that up but suddenly everything became a hassle.
    This is my setup:
    Router: Apple Airport Extreme
5 computers (one server and four workstations, all PC's)
    Sony Playstation 3 (slim)
DHCP doesn't seem to work for some odd reason so I assigned a fixed IP address instead. The PS3 now successfully acquires its IP address but it fails while communicating with the DNS service. So far I have tried this:
    1. Specify the router's IP address for primary DNS (secondary unassigned)
    2. Specifying my ISP's DNS servers as primary/seconday DNS
    3. Specifying two different free DNS servers ("OpenDNS" and another on 4.2.2.1/4.2.2.2)
    4. Rebooting broad band modem and router for each of the above experiments
Also, I have tried opening TCP ports 10070-10080 and UDP 10070 (I found that suggestion in some forum post somewhere) but I'm no Airport wizard so I might possibly have done that the wrong way.
None of the above has resolved the DNS problem and now I am out of ideas.
    Anyone?
    /Jonas

Ok, thanks for clarifying your network configuration. I assume that you have your iMac connected directly to the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet and you want to connect the PS3 wirelessly ... correct?
If so, then we need to double-check the settings for all three devices. Think of DNS as the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Without the correct DNS information, a network client will have difficulty locating things on the Internet. Typically, your ISP provides you with the DNS server information using DHCP. In this case your AEBS would need to be configured to be a DHCP client in order to receive this DNS information. In turn, the AEBS also is a DHCP server and will provide this to any network clients (wired or wireless) connected to it. In order for that to work, both your iMac & the PS3 would need to be configured as DHCP clients. Make sense so far?
Since your iMac is getting Internet access, it (most likely) is getting the proper information from the AEBS. I suggest that you note the IP settings on the iMac; you will want to compare these to what the PS3 is getting.
To review the IP settings on your iMac, you will use System Preferences. In order to give you the proper steps to do so, I will need to know what version of OS X you are running on it?
