Safari's Unusual Download Behavior
Morning -
I've been a long time Chrome user, but after some performance and slowness issues, I've come back to Safari and have really been enjoying the quickness of the browser.
The only thing causing me problems is the way Safari downloads files. In Chrome, if I open a page linked to a PDF, an MP3 or something similar, it automatically downloads the file to my Downloads folder, and even shows a small tab in the bottom of thr browser indicating which files have been downloaded (That might be an extension...)
On the other hand, when I open a tab or a link to a download file in Safari, Safari just loads a blank page, and nothing downloads. When I try to save the page by going to the File Menu and selecting Save, the only option is to save it as a Webarchive. Do I have some weird setting that's making it unable to download like a "normal" browser?

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!

Safari 5.1 downloads .pdf's instead of opening them
Yesterday I upgraded to Safari 5.1 for my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8. Now when I click on a .pdf file on a page in Safari, the file downloads into my Downloads folder and two additional windows open up plus the .pdf (one is a blank page, the other is the contents of the Downloads folder). Now for each .pdf I open, I have to delete it from my Downloads folder into the trash rather than simply closing the .pdf when I'm finished with it. Is there a way to reset this to the way it used to be?

I'm having the same issue as reported by DocSarvis. I have never been using Adobe Acrobat on my Mac's - as the Preview plug-in for Safari have work perfect for me, that is until Safari 5.1.
Some sites, the PDF file is viewed perfectly wihtin Safari, as with earlier versions of Safari, but other including my Bank, somehow tricks Safari to download the file instead of just viewing it as before upgrading Safari.
Have anyone succeeded twiking Safari to view all PDF files from any sites - or do I really need to install the mention plug-in from http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/ - in order for Safari to work as before? -
I have an iPhone 4 and want to download an audiobook from audible.com. My iPhone says safari can't download the item . Why? Also the audible app is for iPhone 5 and above ? Any suggestions ?

According to https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/audiobooks-from-audible/id379693831?mt=8 it only requires iOS 5 or later and it is "optimized" for iPhone 5. I think it will likely work well on your iPhone 4.

To add a ringtone, download it from your computer and make sure it is a .m4r file. Once this is done, add it to your iTunes library (it will go in the ringtones section). Then sync your phone making sure that it syncs ringtones as well (check it in the ringtones tab).
Then in your sound preferences on your iPhone change the ringtone. -
Getting error: Safari can't download file intermittently
I purchased an Ipad (original) for my father in law and it will sometimes give an error ' Safari can not download file' and it will not go to any website. Weatherbug won't connect. Any app that connects to the internet does the same thing. Connecting to the internet thru airport express connected to a dsl modem. Other windows based machine connected to the internet fine. Ideas?

Safari can't download file when trying to download movies
Safari responds with "safari can't download file' when I use download app to download movies . I don't have issues downloading apps or searching net. Would be grateful for assistance.
You can't download something from Safari to your iPad. iPad is a closed system, and not subject to virus intrusion. Now, if for example you have a Kindle app and you go directly to Kindle in Safari and using your ID you buy a book, the book will download to your Kindle account, which you could then open your kindle App on your iPad and read the book you downloaded in your App. But you can't go into Safari and just download a book or a movie directly to your iPad from the net........

I am trying to access my work using the Citrix receiver and it works well on my Mac. However on my iPhone 4, I get an error message that Safari can;t download the file. I beleive the file is a *.ica file to launch the Citrixonline plugin or the Citrix receiver app. Any suggestions? BTW it works well on a co-workers Android phone.... imagine the grief I am getting! :-)
Ok I guess I should have made it more clear. I am using the suggested app. I have to point to the CAG server in Safari, like I do on my Mac and like my Android brethren. After I log in, I click the link to launch the actual Citrix receiver (or the citrix online plugin) to get to the Windows desktop, and Safari says can't download the file. I was unaware on my Mac that a file was being downloaded, which I suspect is the *.ica file, as it happens very quickly and a small window opens that is the Citrix receiver or the online plugin and VIOLA the Win desktop appears.
If I open the Citrix receiver app on the iPhone, there are settings that need to be entered and at this time my higher up IT support won't provide that info, as the iPhone is not approved officially and they won't offer me any info.
I just figured it'd work like it did on my co-workers Android as the process is the same for him and believe it or not for him "it just worked". :-) -
Safari will not download to my computer
I deleted safari because It messed up, and i want to download it again, every time i download it and i get to the stage where you chose what disc you want to chose, i click on my hard-drive disc, and it says that 'your computer cannot use this software" or something like that. i thought it might be doing that because it was overlapping on my old safari, so i completely deleted everything to do with safari that i had previously. I have tried downloading Safari and Safari 2.1 and neither work. They both show the exact same thing.

Deleting Safari should be a very last step to troubleshooting it.
Did you test Safari is a test account first to see if it was a username home
issue ? That is a good first step for next time. Did you empty the trash?

For most file types whose download behavior is set to "always ask" the "save as" option is selected by default in the download window. However, for a few others the "open with" option is selected instead.
Note that Firefox is not automatically opening some files instead of saving them. I still get to choose between saving or opening them, but certain file types start with "open" selected whereas for others "save" is the default.

Hi, I got a virus that does not let me use Safari. I downloaded an av from the app.store but it did not detect anything. I am thinking in formatting the HD. How can I do it and will I lose?
1. Force Quit .
Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time. Wait.
When Force Quit window appears, select the Safari if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window. Wait.
Safari will quit.
Relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.
2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn those off and try Safari.
3. Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
Press “Remove all website data” button.
4. If adware is installed without your knowledge,
download free AdwareMedic by clicking “Download ” from here
http://www.adwaremedic.com
Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.
Once done scanning and removing the adware, quit the app by clicking AdMedic in the menubar
and selecting “Quit AdwareMedic”. -

You can find your version of Mac OS X by clicking on the Apple menu at the top left of your screen and choosing About This Mac. -
Will a program mention for MAC OSX be allowed to download on the newest iPad version. If so, how do I get past the "safari" can not download this file?
No, because iPads do not run Mac OS X. They run iOS.

No, Microsoft Office is for Mac (Office 2011) running OS X, not iOS (which is what runs on the iPad and iPhone).
To open and edit Office documents, I recommend DataViz Documents to Go (http://www.dataviz.com).
