Safari screen grayed out and doesn't function. Help.

Suddenly, the Safari browser stopped working. The screen appears grayed out and touching buttons in the Safari content area doesn't do anything. The search and address windows work and new pages load, but they don't function. The back and forward and other buttons also don't work.
I haven't changed anything (that I know about)since the last time everything worked a few minutes ago.
TIA for your help.

Have you tried resetting the iPad?
reset iPad. Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the
Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

My iMacG5 will only boot to white screen, gray apple and spinning gear. Help?
Also not totally sure if it's an Intel based computer, but that's what I recall. Any way to check, since I can't get to About This Mac window?
It's running on OSX Leopard 10.5.4
First symptom = running slowly - then it kind of froze with color wheel spinning - thought a forced shut down would help - help power button til off, then white screen, gray apple and spinning gear.
    Have tried...
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Then try booting from your install disc again.
    - No change
    And...
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    - The fan just got louder.
    Thanks for your help.

You need to do an Erase and Install or an Archive and Install depending on whether the hard drive is OK or needs to be reformatted.
Start by booting from your Leopard DVD. The rest is just following directions.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • All menus gone, restore is grayed out and can't activate - HELP!

I am unable to restore any menus whatsoever. No address bar, no bookmarks bar, nothing.
I tried right clicking in top bar to restore, but the Restore option is grayed out and does nothing when I click it.
I've deleted and reinstalled Safari three times, but each time it comes back without menus.
Anyone have any idea what I can do?
    Thanks -
    Cyndy

What do you suggest do rectify the Owner account version of Safari? I forgot to mention that it was my fault that the menu bars disappeared in the first place - basically I clicked on Hide Menu Bar, Hide Toolbar etc!
Not your fault, Julian ... if the wee coggy thing is gone, you can't get them back, and you couldn't be expected to have anticipated that.
Okay. I've installed Safari 4.0.4 on the wife's Vista laptop, and therefore may have less than three hours to live. So I'd better tell you this now ...
*Experimentation suggests the following technique is the one we should try on Vista with Julian*
Log back in to your usual account. Quit Safari if you have it open. Just to be on the safe side, make sure iTunes and/or QuickTime are closed too.
First go "Start > Computer". While you're in "Computer", go "Tools > Folder Options". Click the "View" tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected. Click OK.
Open your C drive. Open "Users". Open the folder that has the username of your account. Open "AppData". Open "Roaming". Open "Apple Computer". Open "Preferences".
Find the "com.apple.safari" file. Drag it out onto your Desktop.
Now launch Safari. (This will rebuild the com.apple.safari file.)
Do you have the wee coggy thing back?
*XP instructions for Cyndy if Cyndy has also lost her wee coggy thing*

  • Problems with safari screen grayed out unable to load pages from search

Using IPAD last night and did a google search and google suggestions dialog box remains open along with keyboard, does not allow me to select any search results as the page is grayed out. When I try to select a new page, bookmarks of the back arrow I get NO RESPONSE. Thought the IPAD I charged it last night with same results this AM. Any suggestions!
    Natoulia

Some websites do this but I have found that the iPad is not frozen, it's just the way the website is (poorly) designed and you just need to scroll ALL THE WAY UP to see the page results. Verizon is one such culprit with their site. Try it, I bet it works

  • After installing the newest Firefox update my "back" button is grayed out and doesn't work

Actually, I have quite a few problems with the new version of Firefox. My windows and tabs from previous session don't open, even though I have that checked in Options; have had Firefox crash and freeze much more often; and more.
I really hate this new version and wish Firefox would stop "fixing" something that wasn't broken, or at least wait a little longer before issuing "upgrades" until more bugs get worked out.
If it' not obvious, I HATE this new Firefox--enough that I might go back to IE, which I swore years ago never to do.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    *https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
Another possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Extension manager "install extension" is grayed-out, and not functional

I paid for the Horizontal Menu Advancer, and downloaded it. This a a Dreamweaver extension. Then I downloaded Adobe Extension Manager CS6.
From the "File" menu of Extension Manager "Install Extension" is grayed-out, and does not function.

    Hello David
Please tell us your version of Extension Manager and your version of Dreamweaver, and whether the app is listed in ExMan on the left pane?

  • When i log onto safari the screen is grayed out and i no touch features are functioning

when i log onto safari the screen is grayed out and i no touch features are functioning

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • While editing photos in Aperture, I'm trying to make an "auto" adjustment to the exposure but the button is grayed out and consequently doesn't perform any function, please help! Thank you, Mike

While editing photos in Aperture, I trying to make an "auto" adjustment to the exposure,
but the "auto" button is grayed out and will not allow any auto function to take place.
    Please help!
    Thank you,
    Mike

Mike, are you working with raw images?
For some raw images auto exposure is not available, have a look at this manual page:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=18%26se ction=9%26tasks=true
Note: Automatic exposure adjustment is available for Aperture-supported RAW images only. If you want to adjust the exposure of another file type, such as JPEG or TIFF, see Working with the Exposure Controls. For a list of supported RAW file types, go to the Apple website at http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs.

  • "Edit" Functions Grayed Out and No Longer Work

I have CS5 and have used it for several years now and it has served me well but suddenly, I find that many options (such as most "Edit" options within it are noy grayed-out and non-functional. I've uninstalled it and re-installed but the problem is still there. I can no longer find a phone number to get tech help like I used to and am now totally stuck with a useless product. Does anyone know a fix here?

Jerry, thanks for the screen shots. As JJMack said, a preference reset might work. You might want to go to actions>edit on your post and remove the second picture. Looks like it has some personal info on it.
Try resetting the Photoshop preference file: Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Opt+Shift as you initiate Photoshop's startup. Select "yes" when asked if you would like to continue with reset.

  • Most of the top half of my Edit Menu in Safari is grayed out.  How can I get it functioning again?

Yesterday and today the top half of my Edit Menu in Safari 5.1.10 is grayed out and unusable.  I have tried everything I can think of including reinstalling Safari, repairing permissions, restarting.  I am at a loss.  Can someone tell me what to do to get the menu working again?

I'm replying to my own question - I have no idea what has changed in five hours, but I just logged on again to see if anyone had repllied to my question - and the problem is fixed!  A total mystery to me, but thank you anyway.  I think these discussions are of great help when you have a problem and no "guru" to go to.  Thanks.

  • Anyone know why I can't edit my app screen when I plug in my 3g iphone now?  I can edit all the other tabs, but my app tab is all grayed out and I can't add/edit any apps now.  Please help?

Just last week, I plugged in my iphone 3g into iTunes and for some reason I can't edit my apps anymore.  All the other tabs (music, video, etc.) are all fine, but my apps tab/screen is all grayed out.  I can't edit any of my apps now.  What's the deal?  I can't seem to find anything similar on the support pages, so I'm desperate to find out what the deal is...please help!

Yes, it's checked as it's how I left it when I was able to edit the page before...now the whole tab is just grayed out and I can't check or uncheck anything. Nothing happens. So frustrated...thanks for any help or suggestions.  I have multiple devices on my account and this is the only one that this is happening with when I connect to iTunes. Ugh!
