_ safari screwed up
the language is all changed? i dont know what the * sombody did to the language? Can someone go into PREFRENCES (Safari>Prefrences>General) and tell me ehat the languages and fonts are for their safari?
There are no languages that I see, but in the second tab
Appearance, the encoding is Western ISO Latin 1 which is at the top of the list.
If your menus are in different languages then international has been set to another language.
Sorry if that didn't help. Let us know what's going on.
Good Luck,
-j
If it is international then go to system preferences > international > and then move English to the top of the list. Quit and restart any applications and it should work.

What's wrong with Safari, my Safari?
I couldn't log into my bank this morning. Instead of one slot for Username and another for Password, there was only one slot for Username/Password. This seemed strange, and it didn't work, so I called the bank. Fortunately, as I started to explain the problem to Customer Service, the thought occurred to me, "Is this only Safari screwing up AGAIN? I then tried Google Chrome as I was talking to the Representative, and everything was fine: there were two slots, one for Username and one for Password. Caught in the Act! But what causes this? The Customer's Rep. told me that he uses Safari all the time and that he had no problems. Why, then, has Safari proven to be a total disaster for me? I have version 5.1.2 (653 6534.52.7) installed. Am I missing some codec, whatever they are, or do I need some plug-in? All I know is that I spent years wasting my time and getting angry with many websites because they weren't performing properly until I discovered that Safari, my Safari, was incompatible with them. I then started using Google Chrome, and such problems almost disappeared. True, I still hang on to Google, but only because I like the way it handles BOOKMARKS and HISTORY. Anyway, I now believe that Safari isn't as bad as MY EXPERIENCE has led me to believe. I now believe that there is something I can do to fix it. WHAT?

Ok...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Now install this update > Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 6
Relaunch Safari. From the menu bar again click Safari > Empty Cache
Then click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
Restart your Mac.

Guess what? It STILL doesn't work. I just uninstalled and reinstalled Safari, AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. I consider this to be serious. Not that I'm so important, but I do think that it's something that Apple cannot leave unresolved. I do think that this problem should be "kicked upstairs" to see what those geniuses can make of it. That's what I'm going to do. I'm now going to talk to Apple Support and ask to speak to a supervisor. Someone has the answer.
It works now! By a great majority, most of the problems I've had with my computer over the years have been caused by corrupted Preference files. Today was no exception. As soon as I trashed the two offending preferences files and restarted my computer, Safari became a browser that I could live with. In other words, my problems were being caused by corrupted Preference files, not by Safari. Who can I thank for ending my long ordeal? Tom, the Supervisor of the iapp department Call-in Apple Support. Thanks, again, Tom. -
Can someone please look at this and tell me if it is a Safari glitch or is there something I need to fix in iWeb?
It is looking and working well in Firefox on Mac and Windows, and IE 7 in Windows.
But Safari screws up the colors, doesn't let the text menu work, etc.
http://www.widman.biz/Corvair/English/English.htmlthis is what I get on my mac book. Quite a bit different

Safari 6 screwing up how webpages display
Is it me or has anyone else noticed that websites like banking are showing up all screw up in Safari 6? I can't use at all the latest Safari for my banking as buttons and windows are not longer visible or they are showing up overlapping with other fields making them not just impossible to click but impossible to navigate. Just frustrating... I haven't installed Mt. Lion yet as I'm very leery what other screw-up surprises awaits for users to get irritated and frustrated with. So, at this point I can't fully say I'm enjoying the new browser experience as I have to go and use competitor browsers to get things I need to get done which this latest 6.0 build does not allow me now to do. I've been looking for a plug-in or something but no luck
Anyone else on the same boat? Were you able to fix it?So far all my banking websites. I just found out that my refriigerator is not working! So, I went into Safari 6.0 pulled the website of a local repair shop. Filled in their repair service form and when I click submit NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING happened! I pulled the Opera web browser and it worked like a charm! NO PROBLEMS. NO ISSUES. I'm just getting tired of this crap with Apple to be honest. It's so frustrating. And still with Safari 6.0 there is no way to sort automatically your bookmarks or sort them in alpha order manually... and this is supposed to be a state of the art browser? Really??? Can't use for what I'm finding business websites as I had in the past and still basic key features missing... Not happy at all. I'd wish I could unistall Safari 6.0 and go back to my reliable and working previous version.

Display/Fonts screwed up in Safari and Mail.
I encountered this problem a year ago on a someone else's mac, and now I have it again on my mac. For some reason my Safari and Mail are screwed up. I think its related to fonts and I've tried fixing it to no avail--also creating a new user fixes the problem.
Safari displays some kind of garbled text on the Apple News pages (and subsequent pages). Most other sites aren't effected BUT do look different. Firefox, for example, is NOT effected.
Mail. Where the left menu (in box, trash, sent, etc) where it should be highlighted when on that line/menu item..big circles of pixelated crap are displayed. Also, most mail is unreadable.
However, like I said, creating a new user fixes the problem. I'm not sure how to restore my user to its correct display.
I haven't used my mac lately and the only thing I can trace my steps too was recently installing a large font library.
Need help!!
Chris PowersChristopher --
You said
. . .the only thing I can trace my steps too was recently installing a large font library.
There's your problem.
Read the Links Tom provided for you.
(That Garbled Fonts one is great, Tom !!)
If you follow his advice, check the usual suspects, and you still have problems, you could take your Users (YourName)>Library>Fonts folder to the desktop. Rename it "Trouble Fonts."
Then try Safari again. If it works, it's one or more fonts in the large font library you installed. Then comes the fun part of figuring out which one it was. -
Why does the new update for IPod screw up the function? I can't get on hardly any of my apps, let alone, download any more apps either. I am one unhappy person.
Did you already try to set it up as new device, without using the backup afterwards?

Site only works well in Safari...Firefox & IE are all screwed up
can everyone check out my website (you will get a good laugh): http://www.usbgaggifts.com.
i just did a huge site upgrade and these are the problems that i am having:
FIREFOX
-- the text is screwed up (XXXL and all over the place) on the movies & store pages
-- type is larger than what i tried to use on iWeb '08
IE
-- no Nav Bar = no way to look at any other page on the website
any suggestions what i do?
thanks,
ronIt's not the image file sizes that's causing the slow down. IT's the javascript file attached to each page that's causing the issue. I don't know exactly why but my site was suffering the same issue, major slow down in IE & Firefox. I went into the javascript file on one of the pages and commented out the applyEffects() entry, reloaded the page and all speed issues were resolved. There are some residual affects from changing this entry (no drop shadows, some borders not appearing) but that was the only way to get the site working properly.
I'm not a javascript expert so if someone can take the time to look through the code and find out what's actually causing the slow down it would help out everyone on this board greatly. -
I downloaded a file to open a owners manual for a camera I needed. I had difficulty getting it down loaded and never could get the manual. I tried using my Safari browser and started getting this Goggle Quick Search file which opened in place of my Safari….I tried to close it and I can't. I did manage to get ride of the reader file.
You may have installed one of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked. -
Safari bookmarks completely screwed up messed up
With the latest Mavericks update my Safari bookmarks are completely messed up now having multiple copies of every folder, and the url's in the folders are not matching exactly (some seem to be old versions of the bookmark folders, in that sites are missing from some duplicates)
Does anyone know of an easy way to compare and edit these? Of course they're completely out of order

Safari will not open. Just bounces in the dock and then I force quit it.
This is the report I got after force quitting it. Note that I have received a different one on a prior force quit. Not sure if that is common. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thread 0x144
User sPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work.
First and most important, don’t run these commands until you have verified that they’re legitimate. Never execute shell commands from an untrusted source without knowing what they do, or at least that they don’t do anything harmful. I’ve posted these same commands, with minor variations, many times on this site. You should be able to find other discussions in which they were used without ill effects. Do that before proceeding.
Some of the commands will probably line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Step 4
ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
You can then quit Terminal. -
I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.4. Today, I tried to save my email content as a PDF file. However, I only got a PDF file that have partial content of email. Then I adjust the printer setting and did it again, then I only got a blank PDF file. There was nothing inside. Then I tried to save email as a PDF file by using Safari browser. And I got a complete and sucessful PDF file. I usually save web pages or web mail, online receipt as PDF file by use Firefox. But since I have updated to the new version, there were many problems with my Firefox. I tried to restore all my application and made Firefox in the old 3.6.3 version which I used to have no problem. But now still not working.
I solved it for myself: it was my HP smart-web printer crap that was a plug in and add on for firefox that somehow automatically got installed when I upgraded to 5. I disabled both in the add-ons manager, and voila, printing is working.
It seems there are many things, like this and the Google toolbar, that were screwed by the oddly fast update to 5. Looks like Mozilla didn't give anybody any notice! Must've been some really bad security hole. -
Is Safari the problem, or is it OSX?
Can anyone tell me why, when I select Safari and type Cmd+n (for a new window), it spins up BOTH my hard drives when they're asleep? I could see spinning up your startup drive since Safari was written by morons who made it impossible to select RAMdisk for the cache. But my 2nd physical drive..? Is this Safari, or is it OSX screwing up?
And for that matter, WHY the f-ck did it just spin down my startup drive and then *immediately* spin up BOTH of my hard drives..?? NO apps were running this time. Thanks.Yes, it is OSX 10.4.11, and I have NO backup software running (OWC or anything else).
It also likes to spin up both physical hard drives periodically when i'm watching a movie, even if the movie is on a USB drive (i.e. not on an internal hard disk). -
Safari keeps crashing when scrolling
Dear Apple Community,
I am having a serious problem with my Safari right now. After I installed the 5.1 update yesterday (yes I know…it took me quite some time. I just was too lazy to reboot my MBP ) it keeps crashing……as soon as I try to scroll on a website. Odd. I know. It's not bound to how long I stay on one site, or how long it is open. I can even surf the web…as long as I don't put 2 fingers on my trackpad and try to scroll. Same things happens wehn I wanna scroll with my Magic Mouse. Though, clicking and draging the scroll bars works some times O.o
I tried deactivating all my plug ins (it's just one: AdBlock). Other than that I have no idea what could cause such a crash. I'm tying this on my Firefox right now……good thing I still had it installed :O
Otherwise, I'd be kinda screwed...
IDK if it's something ON my Computer…my brother updated Safari as well and didn't have any problems. Or is this Apples Wrath for delaying the update for a week?
I really hope you can help me guys, here btw is the crashlog from when Safari died the last time. I hope it helps solving this:

The test shows that your problem is caused by one or more third-party system modifications that you installed. Reinstalling Lion will not help.
Now you need to find out what modifications are installed. Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Next, this command:
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
You can then quit Terminal. -
Safari cannot open any file - online or local
Hi Everyone,
I'm struggling with this issue: Safari cannot open anything. It can't open any website. It can't even open any local HTML files. When I put something in the location bar and hit enter, I get about a half inch of blue progress bar and then....nothing. Safari just stops. No error. Not even an attempt to do something. It just sits there. All the other functionality not involved with displaying HTML files works fine. I can change preferences and show the Develop menu. I just can't use the application for anything.
Catch 1: Firefox, Chrome, Opera, iTunes, every other app installed on my Mac works fine and can access the net. With one exception...
Catch 2: The App Store doesn't work either. I can't sign in. When I create a new account, I can't download any apps. (I get a "We could not complete your purchase. Unknown Error.") Nor can I sign out. I read that webkit is the same under the hood for both Safari and The App Store so maybe they are related.
Here's what I have tried:
- Deleting, re-downloading, and reinstalling Safari.
- Deleting .plists from Preferences and Safari folders in my Library.
- Checking Proxies settings (none set)
- Removing third party virus software (Didn't have any. I don't have FruitMenu or Application Enhancer either)
- No parental controls are set
- I've tried a whole bunch of other suggestions, from deleting com.apple.whatever files to repairing permissions, to resetting account permissions.
I'm using OS 10.7.5 and Safari 6. Firefox 15.0.1 and Chrome 22.0.1229.94 are fine. I have a separate MacBook pro with the same proxy settings and Safari settings that works just fine.
Please send help. I know it's something simple. I just want to find it so I can punch it in the face.Did you log out after moving com.apple.LaunchServices.plist?
If you did, proceed as below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.
