Safari Search History

I know there is a way to manually clear the history of searches in safari search fields such as google. But is there a setting to change where safari will not automatically keep a history of searches? Thanks.
  Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Setting History to zero items will affect the history of sites visited, but not the history of search items.
There are actually two separate search history lists.
One is the list of search terms entered into Google or other search pages. These can be cleared by clicking on Edit beside "Other Forms" under AutoFill in Safari's Preferences. and deleting the entry for those sites. These lists can be eliminated by unchecking "Other Forms" which will also disable autofill in all forms.
The other is the list of recent searches in Safari's search window. This list can be cleared by either clicking on "Clear Recent Searches" at the bottom of the drop-down list of recent searches and the other is by reseting Safari which will also reset just about everything that can be reset in Safari. I do not know of a way of keeping this list from being created.

Thank you for the swift answer. I find it amazing that Safari/iPhone developers haven't considered such basic privacy/security issues. Can't help but wonder if it's a cultural thing (Americans and their curious views on the concept of privacy).

  • Safari search history on phone shows searches not by me?

Every time I go on to safari new search history shows numerous searches not done by me, my phone provider says no one else could access this unless they were a spy which seems a weird thing to say.
I do not have a shared computer and no one has access to my phone, how can this happen?

If you are talking about the suggested search terms that appear when you begin typing into the search field these are not searches done by you. This is a list of the most common search strings beginning with what you have typed.

  • Safari search history not clearing

I have a first gen iphone. I've tried everything from going through the settings and clearing the history, cookies, and cache. Also rebooted, restored and still the history is there when I do a search. How do i completely erase the on phone search history?

Disregard, the only solution I found to this was to go through Settings/General/Reset/Reset all Settings. Kind of a pain if you ask me but since I'm a first gen owner it's kind of refreshing to go through and re-set all previous settings and find some little nifty things out about the past updates.

  • Safari search history across linked devices

My 2 sons and I have 3 devices all linked by the one apple ID. I have noticed that I can see on my ipad what open tabs my son has on safari on his iPod. Can he also see what I am browsing on the Internet. I really don't want them reading some of the stuff that I access none of which I might add is dodgy just not appropriate for young kids. When I saw in the cloud tab that I could see his open links I worried that he had access to mine. I have looked on his iPod and can't see anything I have open but I just wondered what the official technical answer is. On reading all the cloud stuff it would appear that open pages stay open across all devices. Any advice would be gratefully received

Ok that 95% answers my query and I have gone on and cleared all the history on his ipod and also any open pages on both his and my devices however where o n the iPod would I see what he sees when I have a tab open i want to do a test and leave a tab open on my device and see what he sees. On the ipad it's very obvious where the cloud is as it sits at the top of the browser next to the history when you are on safari but I can't find anything similar on his iPod . It is the most recent version he has of the iPod. He def has the same cloud as me but I just can't see where he would see the open tabs. I can change the setting on my ipad to private browsing which will ensure he can't see any of my searches but I was curious to see where he would see it. My other son is getting the new ipad mini next week and I will have to check his too so it would be good to know where to look to check. Finally can you have a different cloud ID but keep the same apple ID for app sharing. ( I am an old mom and haven't a clue but want to protect them as much as poss). Thanks in anticipation

  • What happend to Safari search history in ios 7?

The oval search bar is gone, and when you selected it you could see old searches.  With the new unified, you cant see your old searches.  Is it still here?

You should have folders in both bookmarks and favorites. On the Safari page, in bookmarks the folders should be right under history.

    One more thing:
Search history is a term generally referring to what sites you have visited via your browser (e.g. Safari)
To see your Safari search history just open Safari and go to the top menu and select from Show History from the History

  • How can I get rid of "History and Bookmarks" section from the search history drop down menu in safari 6.0.2?

Let's just say I have saved bookmarks of things that i do NOT want my friends to see when they use my computer occasionally. I know they could go and find these bookmarks anyway in the bookmarks menu but they dont snoop around my computer. i would rather it not just pop up when they go to search for something or type in a webpage. If there is no way to customize what shows up in the drop down menu for search results then that is something apple overlooked. Not everybody wants things all in one place. Whats the point of deleting search history and website history if its just going to show the certain things you have bookmarked? Any solution to this would be appreciated. One solution i thought would work was disabling search from suggesting, but i guess that only supresses the webpages not the url/search bar. Oh and this is for safari 6.0.2 please dont give me outdated advice.
    Thanks

  • How can I get rid of search history in Safari on my iPad?

When I highlight one to delete, the search kicks in. How can I get rid of the history?

You can go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, cookies and data and then delete every bookmark and that should clear it temporarily, but it will only be temporary. As soon as you starting using the search again, then suggestions will appear again.
I think that I may have misread your question - if you want to clear all of the history - use the Clear History button in the upper right corner of the History window. You cannot delete one item at a time.

  • Deleting facebook search history in Safari

I'm not able to delete my facebook search history in Safari.  Can anyone help?  I've tried clearing history, cache, cookies, etc.
    Thank you!

    Ok...maybe preferences are corrupted...
    Go to ~/Library/Prerferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari, go to the menu bar click History > Clear History
If that helped, move the .plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. If not, just move it back to the Preferences folder.
If you don't want history saved when you visit Facebook, go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Private Browsing

  • SAFARI 6: how do I clear Google search history?

There used to be an option at the bottom of the scroll down search bar for CLEAR SEARCH.
Now that Safari 6 has adopted the single info bar, that option seems to have disappeared.
So how do I clear search history?
I don't want to clear all history (i.e. sites visited),
    just search history.

    Thank you,
but the point of my question was precisely that in 2012,
the way that Google is presented within Safari is different
(e.g., there is now just a single search bar),
so some of the info on the old threads is no longer relevant.
That is why I titled the qustion clearly "SAFARI 6".
However, I have discovered the answer myself.
I think I was being just too impatient.
The same option of CLEAR RECENT SEARCHES  does come up
if you click and hold on the magnifying glass icon to the left of what is now the single Google search bar.
This click and hold opens a roll-down menu, and near the bottom is the CLEAR RECENT SEARCHES option.

  • Disable Google search history in Safari

Is there a way in Safari on a 3GS to disable storing search history? Every time I select the search box, I am presented with a list of several weeks worth of searches. I know I can clear the history if you access Settings-->Safari-->Clear History but I don't want to do that continually.

  • Clear Google search history from Safari Toolbar (v.4.0.3 and up)

How to clear your search history. TEDIOUS but works.
*Delete Google results pages from the history*
In Safari 4.0.3 and up, you may now search your history. Search for the URL string www.google.com/search? and delete the records that match it.
*Clear the search strings from the toolbar*
Quit Safari then from the Terminal, run this command:
    defaults delete com.apple.safari RecentSearchStrings
When you start Safari again, the search history should be empty.
Somebody could probably build a shell script that searches the History.plist XML file and deletes the <dict> sections AND resets the Safari plist at the same time. I'm not that good with string manipulation, so I'm hoping somebody with experience could pick this up. Then that shell script could be made into an AppleScript or set up with Automator. Wishful thinking?
