Safari session problem? (Connecting... forever)
Two sites I frequently use do not work well with Safari. Both sites require a login and will work well for awhile. Then, suddenly, Safari will stop loading the pages. It will just say "contacting [sitename]" in the status bar. Then, it will refuse to load any page on that site until I restart Safari. Other sites continue to work normally.
1 - this problem does not occur on Macs using Firefox or Camino. It does not occur on any browser on a windows machine.
2 - I have confirmed that the site and my internet is functioning when this happens (e.g. by using another browser, which will load the content while Safari still says Contacting...).
3 - this problem does occur on other Macs using Safari.
4 - clearing cache does not help.
5 - restarting the browser does fix the problem, but it will happen again.
Thus, I assume it is a problem with session cookies. Unfortunately, Safari provides no way to restart a session without restarting the browser, so I can't verify this.
Any insight? Does anyone else have this problem?
It is very frustrating... I am restarting Safari 20+ times a day (I use these sites throughout the day).
Thanks in Advance,
JB
After reading lots of other similar situations, i tried one fix recommended by (Bee):
"You also might go to your Safari Icons folder.
USERS>YourName>Library>Safari>Icons.
Then take that file and put it in the trash.
A new one will be regenerated.
(That file keeps copies of all of the Favicons of all the sites your visit.
It gets huge after a while, and needs cleaning out.)
and that fixed my problem.
Just for the record i noticed my history menu wasn't being updated.. AT ALL.. so if that matches your troubles give this a try

Downloaded 5.1.1 to my iphone. Now, Safari will not connect to my server. Can not download web pages and many of my apps. Email seems to be ok. iphone running slow and sluggish. I have read several other users have experienced the same problem. Any solutions?
Basic troubleshooting steps oultlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
You need to go through all steps in succession until your problem is solved. If going through ALL these steps fails to resolve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible replacement. -
Problem with Safari **Safari can't connect to the server**
My internet is working fine, but I keep having to refresh the page because I'm always getting "safari can't connect to the server". Same thing happens with different browsers. I've read a couple things online and unistalled everything that I think is causing the problem but it's still happening frequently. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Most school networks are closed networks. You can access their Intranet, with all the files and peripherals and everything, but you need to have a specific password or IP address to access any outside connection. I have an ibook G4 that's 3 years old. I used it in high-school to access AOL wirelessly. That was before closed and protected networks were prefered. It shouldn't matter if the school intranet is widows based or not. You need to access your own internet service sometimes in order to get any reaction. If you simply use safari, you might only be connecting to the schools intranet, which only links together the schools computers and keeps the system isolated. Also, you need to check your firewall settings, in fact, just turn off the firewall. The schools sytem is firewalled up the bum and you shouldn't get attacks anyway because you're running the mac os.
You might also try an alternative approach. Go into a computer lab, access one of the systems, then go to control panels and look up every connection you can find. Take down all of the info and then see which matches up with similar info on your mac. Then go to another pc and look up the same info again. Is it different? How? Then take that listing to the system administrator and show them. They may not know that a mac has a simpler interface than the pc, so you may have to do some prodding to get them to take a look. If they still tell you it wont work, you could try boot-camp or a virtualizer (to let you run windows alongside the mac os). If you use a virtualizer, you can get your own copy of windows and then share it's connection to the main system to the mac. -
Safari can't connect to server problem (just one website)
After I upgraded my mac about a week ago, I can't open a particular website using my home wifi (Safari can't connect to server) It lets me open page but one, which happens to be my mail website. However, when I use a public wifi, I can open that website without any problem. Any ideas why this happens?
Linc.
I have been unable to connect to specific random favorite sites and tried your posts suggestion
"Boot into Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results."
I was able to connect to all my unavailable sites. Can you help me discover what is preventing my access when not in Recovery mode. I Made the Safari preferences match the recovery mode Safari preferences so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
I ran EtreCheck

Safari can't connect to the server - still causing problems
Hi
I have read through several topics relating to this problem - but have yet to be able to resolve the issue. So apologies in advance if it has already been answered in one of the many threads.
I have 2 computers both working off the same broadband hub connection.
Both have the same version of the OS and the same version of Safari: OS 10.4.11 and Safari 4.0.4
I have checked that the network settings are the same and all parental control settings are the same.
The laptop will access sites that the desktop will not.
Can anyone shed some light as to why numerous sites I try to access on the iMac result in a Safari message "Safari can’t connect to the server".
Same applies when I attempt the same sites with Firefox.
I have emptied caches, resolved all font issues, addressed terminal and plists etc. etc. - all to no avail.
Help!!!Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed. -
I am having a major problem connecting to FaceTime today. Message reads "unable to connect, check network connections". I am online, mail works, ex

When I first got my computer...I didn't have any problems connecting. I had to purchase a new router and since I have to reconnect using diagnostics. How can I return this so that I don't have to use diagnostics every single time?
To connect directly, you would need to connect an Ethernet cable between the Ethernet port on your MacBook and any of the available LAN ports on the Netgear router. I highlighted the Netgear's LAN ports with a blue arrow below.

Internet connected according to Network Diagnostic but Safari can't connect
I just bought a new iMac in Australia yesterday; when I brought it back home and connected the ethernet cable to it I thought it would automatically connect to the internet as my other family members' Macs have in their homes, and as my old PC did.
Unfortunately it did not, so I bumbled through Network Setup in System Preferences with little idea of what I was doing and essentially hoped for a miracle. I copied the 'IP address', 'Router' address and 'Subnet mask' numbers over manually from my PC but that didn't work. I then selected 'Using DHCP' and it gave me a seemingly normal IP starting with 192.xxx.xxx.xxx and the same subnet mask. When I run 'Network Diagnostics' it says my internet connection appears to be working correctly, and there's green lights next to everything. But when I go to Safari and type in www.google.com it takes forever before finally telling me that "Safari can't connect as the server is not responding'.
I have scrolled through pages of this forum trying to find answers but I haven't yet. I tried changing the DNS addresses to the ones from OpenDNS but that didn't seem to work.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! What kind of connection do you have?
-DHCP, this assigns the IP automaticly
-PPPoE, you will have to enter the information from your ISP manually in rder to connect
If you copy the IP from another machine it will create an issue since IP´s are unique to for machine.
Can you verify you internet connection, just to make sure it actually works?
+you can connect with other machines?
- you have to look at the settings on you machine
+you can ping www.google.com from Network utility
- if you can you have a connection to the internet, there might be a problem with your DNS server
+you can connect with IP addresses but not the HTTP
- copy and paste googles IP into your web browser, if it connects you should contact you ISP or look for DNS trojans in your system
+what does network utility show of send errors and link speed. -
Software Update can't download; Safari can't connect to apple (tough!)
hello -
I posted this topic in Safari but it may really be more of a networking question. I have two problems which are specific to one user account on my Tiger machine.
1) Safari can't connect to anything from Apple.com
2) Software Update can download lists of updates, but the downloads of the updates themselves never begin (hangs at 0 B of 31 MB, etc.)
Firefox is fine on apple sites from this account, and neither problem is present when I login to a different account.
Here are some things I've tried with no luck:
-trash com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
-move all plists out of Preferences and restart Safari
-move Safari folder out of ~/Library and restart Safari
-move everything out of ~/Library which is not present in
the working user account and restart Safari
-reinstall Safari from Tiger disc using Pacifist
I ran a port scan in Network Utility and this is what I get:
Port Scan has started ...
Port Scanning host: 192.168.100.54
Open TCP Port: 21 ftp
Open TCP Port: 22 ssh
Open TCP Port: 139 netbios-ssn
Open TCP Port: 427 svrloc
Open TCP Port: 445 microsoft-ds
Open TCP Port: 548 afpovertcp
Open TCP Port: 5900
Port Scan has completed ...
Is it weird that port 80 does not appear? Still, I get the same result from the working user's account so it's hard to imagine this is the case. I don't have the OS X firewall on.
I am really stumped by this problem and would love some help!
thanks,
Genecurious and curiouser! Your suggestion to Reset Safari was a great one - thanks! Resetting Safari allows access to the apple websites again. There's no new software to download from SWUpdate right now, so I can't test that, but I will test as soon as I can.
here's the weird thing though. Attempting to login to these discussion forums using Safari brings the problem back again! I type in my login info and it hangs forever while trying to load discussions.apple.com/login.jspa. Once this has happened, then I'm once again unable to load anything under apple.com in Safari, until I Reset. I thought maybe this was a Java problem so I reinstalled the latest Java, but this doesn't help. Still no problem here in Firefox.
any thoughts!

Not sure that I have selected the correct forum. Hope my questions are clearly stated.
Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter. TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices). It does not show Mail or Safari menus. System preferences' display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution. I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access. Is there any way to make this work for us? We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web. Do we need Apple TV to do this? Or is it not possible with our old iMac? My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
Thank youLately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time, you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV. -
Safari no longer connects to the internet
I upgraded to OS Yosemite in my iMac (must be approaching 4 years old) and everything has been working fine. Had a couple of applications where they closed unexpectedly, but nothing major and things have continued as they always have. Apps have also automatically updated. As of today, Safari will no longer connect to the internet and I keep getting the classic "the server unexpectedly dropped the connection" blurb and I kept being told that a disk that I hadn't put in the machine is not being recognized.
I'm typing this on my MacBook Air so I know that Safari can work fine (also having no problem with my iPad or iPhone) and there is no issue with my ISP' modem (I'm with Virgin Media), connector or Netgear wireless router. Tonight I have performed a recovery install and now I have this annoying message saying how I need a particular Java plugin, which I can't sort out because Safari can't connect to the internet. I have also performed a router reset, without remedy.
Logically, as I see it, the issue lies with Safari, and due to it being the only internet access on my iMac, I can't even download Firefox or access the App Store so looks like I can't update. A friend is also having the same issues with his iPad, so I know this isn't just my iMac
Looking for some answers here? Anyone?
ThanksPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Problem connecting wirelessly from iMac to NETGEAR router, get invalid password message with WPA and WPA-2 encryption in place but if I remove them, so no security, can connect without a problem. Help!!
Thank you for your suggestion but I have already had a couple of phone sessions with NETGEAR support and they don't see any problems with the router settings etc. They referred me to Apple support, who helped me discover that it is possible to communicate with the router but only if I turn off the encryption/security software, which I don't want to do. The frustrating thing is that I can connect wirelessly from a laptop running Windows 7 and two Anroid smart phones, with WPA-2 in place, without a problem. Do you have any other ideas?

I have MacDeskTop W/Intel/OS X Lion 10.8.2 and Safari:Ver6.0.2(8536.26.17)
Currently I am having a big issue to access within this website's the "SHOP section(tab)" I ca click on the tabs and read the info in each section, except for the "Shop" Tab.
While in the process of paying for my items in my cart, I received a website message saying something
To the affect that this website is being updated. Your items in your cart will be in your cart.
Then the website's screen kicked me out the door.
A few days later I accessed the main page of this website with no problem.
I can read the information on the main web page pertaining to items I need to purchase, etc., with no problems.
I click and maneuver from on one tab to another from the main page within this website with no issues.
When I click on the "SHOP section(tab)" within this website to complete my purchase.
Part of this website an error occurs on this "SHOP tab".
"Safari can't connect to the server".
Safari can't open the page "https://and the name of this website" because Safari can't connect to the server "www.the name of this website".
I click on the reload from the view of the toolbar and I can't access this website's"Shop section(tab) at all.
I e-mailed the webmaster of this website a few times, but no response.
In the past I was able to access the "Shop section(tab") within this website many times to purchase items with no issues.
Now I am at my wits end as I really need to complete my purchase from this website.
I cannot purchase these items from other websites. Only this website.
So, I really need anyone's tech expertise to help me access the "SHOP" tab within this website.
I also have another website that i have visited numerous times within the last 6 months with no issues.

"problem connecting to server" when trying to access local disk
Recently (perhaps since I upgraded to Yosemite), the first time I try access one of my two hard drives through Finder I get two pop-up windows with error "there was a problem connecting to server". When I dismiss the pop-ups, the Finder window appears OK. I then don't get these errors for some time and then I get them again - and always two errors.
It seems the access request goes through NAS which fails ...
"NetAuthSysAgent[11958]: ERROR: AFP_GetServerInfo - connect failed 62"
and "NetAuthSysAgent[11958]: GetStatus: connecting to self not allowed"
but then it gets actioned as a local access. Can anyone think of why NAS gets involved? And mainly how to get rid of it :^).
There is nothing in login items that mounts either of the disks as a server. Is there a way to find out if a local disk is mounted as a server and who caused it?Many thanks, I am impressed by the process :^)
