Safari Sham Security and Software Upgrade Notice

Last night I clicked on a doodle poll to enter my name and I got a notice in Safari saying:
Safari - Alert
Major Security Issue
To fix it please call Support for Apple
+1 800-680-4131 (Toll Free) immediately!
I did not call the number but called Apple Support. After waiting 45 minutes for an agent, he walked me through a number of steps to block those kinds of messages and to increase the security on my laptop. He agreed it was a sham notice and that it was phishing.
We appeared to have resolved the problem, but after shutting down and restarting my computer, later that evening another message popped up in Safari, this time telling me that some software program was in urgent need of updating. I closed Safari and went to Firefox for the rest of the evening.
Has anyone else experienced this new problem in Safari?
I recently upgraded to Yosemite and have had other problems with Mac Mail, which I think I have resolved, but this Safari thing has me spooked.

  • 2 Cisco WLC 5508 controllers and software upgrade 7.6.130 + FUS 1.9

    Hi
I have two WLC 5508 controllers that need 7.6.130 and FUS 1.9 installed. (Current version 7.3 and FUS 1.7)
Configuration: One controller is at Site A and the other controller is at Site B (two different states..)
They're configured so that if Site A goes down, Site A AP's will failover to Site B and vice versa ..
    - What would be the recommended approach for upgrading the software to 7.6.130.0 (from 7.3) and also upgrading FUS 1.9 (from 1.7)?
My plan was to download 7.6.130.0 to both controllers and pre-download the software to all AP's (about 100 total between both sites) and then reboot the controllers at night at the same time? Or one before the other?
Step 2. Install FUS 1.9 to each controller.
I'm concerned over what might happen during the upgrade and AP failover etc..
    Thanks

This is what I would do:
Upload v7.6.130.0 to all WLCs and then use the pre image download to push the image to all access points.
    Dont reboot the wlc
Image swap in the access points so that v7.6.130.0 is primary
Move all access point to one of the WLCs (A)
Enable ap AAA authentication on the WLC that has no access points and the one you will work on first.  This prevents access points from joining
    Reboot the WLC (A)
    Upload the FUS 1.9.0.0
Reboot WLC (A) this takes up to 45 minutes
When the WLC (A) comes back online, uncheck ap AAA authentication
Move access points from WLC (B) to WLC (A)
Enable ap  AAA authentication on  WLC (B)
Perform all the other task you did earlier on WLC (A)
    That's it.

  • So what kind of hardware and software upgrades can i get to beef up my macbook?

i'm talking ugrade to eight gigs of RAM, dragon dictate, any video cards? i want this thing to last me for like 20 years. maybe boot camp it so i could run TOR on the windows side. and when you answer, please keep it simple cause i don't know TOO much about this stuff

The only upgradable hardware in a MBP is RAM and HDD/SSD.  But neither upgrade done by you will void the warranty unless you are extremely clumsy and break something in the process ... but that is not very common.
Some even replace the optical drive with a second hard drive, but Apple frowns upon that and void call that system "out of warranty".  But if your system is 5 years old and beyond any warranty, it s your call.
All else is soldered to the logic board.
2011/2012 MBPs can upgrde memory tpo 16 GB (although 16 GB memory is still $250).  8 GB is only $50, though.
BootCamp does not necessarily need more memory, since only one or the other is running at any time.  But if you want to use Windes in a VM (virtual machine, such as VirtualBox, Parallels or VMWare  Fusion) more memory is always better since both OSs will need memory.
Software upgrades are limited only by available packages, and come in a variety of types.  You would need to specify software you want to use.
    BUT
You said "last for 20 years".  Several people have kept running applications designed fro the PPC (PowerPC) chipset, and which had a support software called "Rosetta" that run up through Snow Leoapard.  Rosetta is now defunct in Lion and beyond.  In short, software compatibility will likely fall off so eventually you will need to buy new software.

  • Safari,Help Center and Software update not opening

I downloaded Safari 3.1 for Tiger and I have Panther and when the install was finished and I opened Safari it only bounced 1 time and would not open its the same for Software update and Help Center and I dont have the restore discs

    Hi zenbeetle3,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Though your problem is similar to the original poster here it is usually best to start a new topic to get the best and quickest help. Sometimes users will not see your question when imbedded in another topic.
"OS X 4.0 isn't available anymore according to the Apple store online"
That 10.4 Tiger install disks are no longer available through the Apple Store but I believe that you can still call Apple and order the disks for Tiger 10.4.
That said, you will need your system install disks to reinstall Safari version 1.3 which you can then update to version 1.3.2 (v312.6). You will first need to uninstall all vestiges of the Safari 2.0 install first. Safari 2.0 was for Tiger 10.4. You will need to delete the application and associated files for Safari such as the .plist file found in your Home folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. (I'm not sure why you do not have any .pkg file for Safari in your Reciepts folder. Do a search in finder for any other files for Safari and drag them to the trash as well.
You will need the original disks for your computer or a set of retail Panther install disks. You cannot use another set of install disks from another computer (machine specific disks) or upgrade disks. You may be able to get replacement disks from Apple by calling them with your computers serial number for a small fee. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a set of retail Panther disks from a reseller.
Next, download the Pacifist utility (you will need 10.3.9 at least to download and use this version.
Using Pacifist you can extract Safari from your install disks. You should then reapply the 10.3.9 Combo update.

  • Safari doesnt work and software update wont open

i have os x 10.3.9 and my safari doesnt work anymore, as well as software update. does anybody know how to install it back onto the computer from the os cd? or where can i download safari 1.3 (full version)? the apple web site does not have it, it only has updates.

Try deleting the com.apple.Software update plist from Home/Library/Preferences. Safari can be reinstalled from your install disk. It may be listed under optional installs or custom installs. Safari 1.3 is terribly out of date and will crash on many sites. A better alternative is Camino which has the look and feel of safari and is quite stable.

  • Step by step computer and software upgrade, please?

I will be upgrading my hardware and my software within the next couple of months. I currently use PSE 3.0 on my Windows XP computer and I regularly save a backup of my Organizer (throught the backup function) on an external hard drive. I plan on upgrading to Vista and to PSE 5.0. Could you please direct me or give me dummy proof step by step instructions for the migration. The old computer will stay in the family and I will not need to delete or move anything from it. Please advise. Will PSE 5.0 do a reconnect with the 3.0 backup? All the photos are in the same single place.

You should be able to install PSE 5 - apply the 5.0.2 update - and restore your catalog. If you run into problems, here's the place to ask for help.

  • After iTunes upgrade and software upgrade, receiving -9808 error

After upgrading to iTunes 10.2.1.1, began my iTouch 3rd gen IOS upgrade (to 4. whatever). Received the -9809 error "We could not complete your iTunes Store Request". Did a restore and still frozen on the USB pointing to iTunes logo and still receiving the -9808 error. Tried rebooting, no success, put iTunesHelp.exe in Norton, even disabled Firewall during the restore to ensure no issues.
    I even updated Windows Vista...
My iTouch was absolutely fine until the upgrade...any suggestions...I am beyond frustrated right now!
    Thanks!

Here is Apple's support document on the 9808 error.
Read it carefully and see if you missed any of the recommendations listed.

  • Computer and Software Upgrade Dilemma

I recently bought a MacBook Pro with Leopard. All works fine and I'm happy. I hope to use photoshop cs3 Extended extensively.
My old computer was/is running Photoshop CS. I want to upgrade to CS3 Extended.
Question: Do I need to purchase a whole new version of Photoshop if I'm installing app onto a new Leopard OS-based computer?
Thanks, in advance. It's $650+ for a complete version and about $199 for an upgrade. I like the second price best.

The license is for one user and two computers that cannot be used at the same tine, e.g. a laptop and a desktop computer

  • Am preparing to replace my hard drive and also upgrade to snow leopard.  I've already backed up to an external hard drive via time machine.  Should I just follow instructions via manual, or is there some other literature available to help?

Haven't used this forum for several years,   all looks new.  Am going to install 750 GB scorpio black hard drive,  while I'm at it,  will upgrade to 10.6.  Any step by step info available beside the manual?   Did upgrades with my old G4 and it wasn't that difficult.  Have not worked on my macbook pro.  any info would be appreciated.

If you value your sanity, don't upgrade both things at once. Buy a new hard drive, format it, clone your existing drive to it, boot from it externally to make sure it's bootable, and then install it in your MBP. Use it long enough to make sure all is well. Then and only then, upgrade your OS on it. If anything goes wrong with your installation/upgrade, you have the original hard drive that you can clone onto the new drive to get back to where you were before the aborted upgrade.
If you do major hardware and software upgrades at the same time (i.e., without careful testing in between) and anything goes amiss, you may not have any idea which upgrade is responsible for the problem or even when the problem began. When making big changes, make them one at a time.

safari, chrome and firefox cannot verify identity of secure websites after upgrading to 10.7.4,  apple engineers have tried multiple things including operating system with no success

There are several threads about this problem, most notably one called 'Invalid Certificates' is over 4 pages long.  Many of us have experienced difficulty connecting to banking and other secure sites.  On my Macbook Pro, I cannot get to my banking site with any browser, however I can get there on my iMac using Safari, but get the 'Invalid Certificate' notice with FF and Chrome.  The problem started after the installation of 10.7.4.  I have sent a message to Apple--they will be dismayed to hear that I cannot complete an order at their online store!

    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • I installed the latest Security and Safari update.  Now Safari crashes and Chrome won't launch at all.  Can I revert to the software state before the newest updates?

After installing the latest security and Safari updates (18 Sept 2013), Safari crashes and Chrome won't launch at all.  Can I revert to a software state before this latest install?

The problems are caused by third party input managers/enhancers that have not yet been updated by their developers to comply with the standards used by Safari 3.2.1. and/or Safari 4.
    In your case these are:
    x7e3000 - 0x7e3fff com.aladdinsys.mmenabler 7.1.0 (99) /Library/InputManagers/MagicMenuEnabler/MagicMenuEnabler.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ MagicMenuEnabler
    0x7e7000 - 0x7e7fff com.yazsoft.SDEnhancer ??? (1.0) /Users/peterdignam/Library/InputManagers/SpeedDownload Enhancer/SpeedDownloadEnhancer.bundle/Contents/MacOS/SpeedDownloadEnhancer
    0x254a000 - 0x254dfff com.yazsoft.SDSafariBundle ??? (1.0) /Users/peterdignam/Library/InputManagers/SpeedDownload Enhancer/SpeedDownloadEnhancer.bundle/Contents/Resources/SDSafariBundle.bundle/ Contents/MacOS/SDSafariBundle
You fill find them in one or either of these folders:
    Home/Library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/Library/Application Support
although the exact location is indicated in your crash report as quoted above - look under 'Binary Images'.
Close Safari and delete them, then restart Safari and it should be working normally.
Check with the developers of the plug-ins in question for updates that are Safari 4 compliant.
