Safari slow to connect

As a new iMac user, I have been using Safari frequently. However, ever since it was shut down due to vacation, and re-booted, whenever it goes into sleep mode I have difficulty getting Safari back. It will state: "you are not connected to the internet...."; then a few seconds later, the Apple Homepage comes up. If have been told by tech support to reset Safari, empty cache, increase internet speed connection, all of which has been done, but to no avail. When computer comes out of sleep mode, and I click on Safari, it still tells me for a few seconds that I have no internet connection. Computer is connected by cable modem, not wireless. Has anyone else out there experienced this problem? Any suggestions?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions and Mac Computing
There is a bit of a lag coming out of sleep mode if your Network settings for location are the default values. In System Preferences>Network panel, rather than use the "Automatic" location setting, create a personal location for yourself. Here's how to do it.
- Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
- Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
- Back to the "Show" menu, select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 208.67.222.220 and 208.67.220.222 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply". If you use Comcast, you'll have to contact them as they have their own DNS codes.
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations, hence creating the lag.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.

  • Safari slow/poor connection?

Hello, i have an Intel MacMini with 1g of RAM and been thinking about upgrading to 2g of RAM. Recently my MacMini has been running a little slow on the interent as in loading for a good while or that little circle rainbow icon is on (guessing it means its working) but it seems like it freezes sometimes? Does it hurt to have a couple of tabs open on Safari? MySpace has been running slow also as in taking a while for the pages to load im guessing due to what they have on their pages, i.e. pictures and fonts ect.. Any help on what i can do, maybe clean out the HD. Ive only had the MacMini for less than 3 months? Photobucket seems to take forever to load up my pictures that i upload on there. Before on my PC it did it very quickly? Thanks for any help.
    Robert.

    Dirk Tanner,
    1. With Safari open, from the Safari menu select "Empty Cache..." and from the History menu select "Clear History"
    2. Navigate to Mac OS X disk/Applications/Utilities/Java/ then double click Java 5.0 preferences and clear the Java cache. Do the same for Java 1.4.2 if you have it.
    3. To automatically run the routine daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks, leave the computer on between the hours of 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM daily. I can't find the knowledge base article describing how to do those manually.

  • HT4623 safari slow / crash connection during WIFI after upgrade my iPhone to ISO 6, why

    It's a great OS ?

Many people are reporting the same issue.  Download the update in iTunes (select "Download Only") then apply the update when the download has finished.  It's safer that way.

  • HT4922 Downloaded 5.1.1. to my iphone. Now, Safari will not connect to my server.  Can not download web pages and many of my apps. Running very slow sluggish! Is there a fix? Sound like other users are experiencing same problems.  Anyone have a solution?

Downloaded 5.1.1 to my iphone. Now, Safari will not connect to my server. Can not download web pages and many of my apps. Email seems to be ok. iphone running slow and sluggish.  I have read several other users have experienced the same problem. Any solutions?

Basic troubleshooting steps oultlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
You need to go through all steps in succession until your problem is solved.  If going through ALL these steps fails to resolve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • Safari no longer connects to the internet

I upgraded to OS Yosemite in my iMac (must be approaching 4 years old) and everything has been working fine.  Had a couple of applications where they closed unexpectedly, but nothing major and things have continued as they always have.  Apps have also automatically updated.   As of today, Safari will no longer connect to the internet and I keep getting the classic "the server unexpectedly dropped the connection" blurb and I kept being told that a disk that I hadn't put in the machine is not being recognized.
I'm typing this on my MacBook Air so I know that Safari can work fine (also having no problem with my iPad or iPhone) and there is no issue with my ISP' modem (I'm with Virgin Media), connector or Netgear wireless router.  Tonight I have performed a recovery install and now I have this annoying message saying how I need a particular Java plugin, which I can't sort out because Safari can't connect to the internet.  I have also performed a router reset, without remedy.
Logically, as I see it, the issue lies with Safari, and due to it being the only internet access on my iMac, I can't even download Firefox or access the App Store so looks like I can't update.  A friend is also having the same issues with his iPad, so I know this isn't just my iMac
Looking for some answers here?  Anyone?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Why is my safari slow on my macbook air after update to yosemite

I updated my MacBook Air to Yosemite a couple of weeks ago.  Since then several websites I frequently use take very long to load and some features don't load at all (i.e. fitbit dashboard).  Before the update all worked fine.

Hi Allen, I too have had similar issues. Could I get you to look at the Etre report I just ran and offer some comments? Would more memory help anything? I kind of hesitate to do that on a whim with a machine this old.

  • Safari won't connect without signing on to AOL

I’m having a problem with Safari not working. I have had my imac G5 for a couple of weeks now and It’s been working great until yesterday. I use safari and AOL with a router. Safari is my default browser. Everything was working fine except now Safari won’t connect unless I’m logged into AOL. If I’m in AOL Safari works fine only slower than normal. If I log out of AOL, Safari quits working. Anyone have any suggestions?
Not sure what happened. Everything else seems to be working fine.
    Thanks,
    randy

Just as suddenly as Safari stopped working, it started again. The only thing I did differently was sign in to the main administrator and started Safari from there. Maybe I needed to do that after I repaired permissions and reset the modem. anyhow, it's working ... for now.
    Thanks
    Randy

  • Safari can't connect after latest Lion update

Just updated my software and now safari can't connect to websites. It connects for a bit then after awhile it will no longer connect. Firefox and Chrome are connecting fine so this is a safari only issue with the latest update.
    Safari Version 5.1.5 (7534.55.3)
Quiting safari and restarting works for a little while then eventually 'can't connect to server' eventually appears. I'm going back to firefox until this is resolved.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
Hi I have the same sort of problems I carried out the two tests and the problem appears to only be in my profile not in guest profile. Is there a cure?

  • Safari slow after installing TalkTalk Fiber Optic Broadband.

Why is my Safari browsing so slow after connecting to TalkTalk's Fiber Optic Broadband connection?

I installed Firefox browser which resolved my problem.
I have a iMac with Safari as my web browser. I recently signed up for Fiber Optic Broadband Connection with TalkTalk who assured me that my internet connection will be at least 30Mb/s - as opposed to my 9Mb/s. So I did the switch and signed up for the Fiber Optic Broadband. To my horror, my web browsing became snails pace when I changed the router to the Supper Fast Router necessary to be on the TalkTalk Fiber Broadband (especially for Google home page and much worse for Youtube). I asked TalkTalk for assistance and they could not help. I then downloaded the latest Firefox browser and found that the slow speed problem was no more! I immediately removed Safari from my Dock and replaced it with Firefox. Problem Solved! :-)

golden grape - Welcome to the discussions!
DNS problems are very irritating - and some of the hardest to figure out.
Let's start gathering some information to see how things are set up. Open the Network Utility and go to the "Lookup" tab. Pick one or two addresses and look them up. How long does the server report it took to do the lookup (query time). How long did you wait from clicking go?
P.S. sometimes the best thing is to ignore these things for an hour or so - it's often a temporary thing while your DNS server works out the addresses you need. Also - mac OS will cache the addresses - so once you have them - you don't need to wait anymore on DNS to find things. Try to leave your mac on as long as possible - unless you have some bad software or corruption on a disk - the longer it runs, the faster things will get.

7ms! Your DNS server is a lot faster than mine.
I can confidently say that you don't have DNS problems. If you had DNS problems - firefox and Network Utility should be equally slow. This really has nothing to do with mini hardware either.
It would be best to ask a new question titled "Safari slow - FireFox fast" in the Safari group. I'm sure a lot of people there will have good ideas to find out what causes safari to go slow when firefox can browse the same site with speed.
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=169
One things I can suggest is:
    * Temporarily change your Safari preferences to open the bookmarks or a blank page. You will know if safari is waiting on something locally or the web page is drawing slowly. I doubt this is it - but you never know until you try to narrow down what exactly is slow.

I am using school's network now.
Does the same thing happen if you connect to the internet through 'normal' means, such as a home internet connection (broadband, dialup etc), or does it just happen at school?
    Matt

  • The great safari slow down.

For three days now safari has been very very slow to load webpages. When I type in the URL safari connects to the site and then can take 2-4 mins to load. Say I try www.bbc.co.uk it will take two mins for the home page to load.
If I switch to Firefox all websites load quickly so I know its not an issue with my dsl connection.
Pings and traceroutes to sites come back fine and responses are good.
Its just when I use safari.
I have emptied cache and history.
Restarted (many times in the last three days)
    Reset my dsl router.
    Checked cables
Turned off the built in 10.4.2 firewall.
    Any Ideas ?

This is a wide-spread issue. Just check out all of the posts in this forum that relate to Safari slowing down, crashing, etc., etc.
I've been having the same problem for about 1 week or more. Tried all the things that you tried, including trashing Safari and reinstalling. I suspect that it has to do with a liveupdate of Safari software that occurred shortly before the problems began. I also tried trashing Safari again and reinstalling the older version. Didn't work.
The info I've read seems to indicate that the problem affects more than the Safari application itself; the installation may add components to the OS also. This would appear to mean that the problem can't be erased by just trashing the application.
This problem is affecting both Tiger and Panther. So far Apple has been silent, as far as I can tell. Meanwhile I've had to say goodbye to Safari. Unfortunate. There just aren't great substitutes for it.
Has anyone with a service support warranty (3 months) still in effect tried to call Apple support about this?

  • Safari can't connect to webpages...

    Hello,
Safari will not connect to any website on our Powerbook G4 but other TCP/IP services work. For instance, we can use the AOL application and connect via TCP/IP. We can talk on Skpe and use iChat.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Alan

Update your DNS to a known-good server, such as OpenDNS or Google DNS.
Reference Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage ... - Support - Apple for more information.
If using known-good DNS doesn't resolve the issue, turn off plugins and extensions in Safari. Check to see if the issue persists. If it doesn't, then one of the plugins or extensions is causing the issue. Follow Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may ... - Support - Apple for more information.
If the issue is not resolved by addressing the DNS or add-ons, then start by emptying Safari caches. If that doesn't help, then reset Safari (note: you will lose auto fill contents, such as saved passwords, for example). If it still doesn't work, there are additional steps, but the DNS or add-ons are most likely the cause.

  • Safari can't connect with the server

I'm operating on cable/ethernet/802.1x. A few days ago I unplugged the cable from the iBook for a couple minutes, reconnected, and suddenly Safari won't connect, except for 3 banking sites with https urls. I've tried all the usual tricks, like dumping cookies, cache, reinstalling from Apple, shutting down, rebooting the modem. I may have even screwed things up in the library. It almost seems like a security/authorization issue, where I am without knowledge. Now, suddenly, after playing with all these activities, the fan starts up after only a few minutes. The case is warm, but not overly so. It's running as I type. I don't notice a significant slow down in performance. Stumped Jim

    Hi Jim
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
There may be hard drive problems or the PRAM needs to be reset. Restart the computer holding down the P R Option and Command keys for 3 chimes. After the 3rd chime, release those keys and immediately hold down the shift key. This will restart the computer in Safe Mode. Safe Mode in part runs a few maintenance scripts on the drive. As such, it will take longer than usual for the boot process to bring you to the log-in screen.
Log-in after the log-in screen appears. Once the boot is complete, restart the machine again as you usually would. Then, try your Network connection again.

  • Safari can't connect to any servers or webpages

    Hi,
I have my internet running without issues. I use Firefox, and currently viewing this page and typing.
Also I can access an FTP server elsewhere in another country.
However when I open Safari, I can't seem to get on any websites with "Safari can't connect to the Server" no matter where I go.
I tried to go on Apple site to download Safari but only available version is the Snow Leopard.
Any idea how I can fix this problem?

  • My 2007 mac pro has a slow internet connection with lion

    Hi:
I've been dealing with a severely slow internet connection with my 2007 mac pro - dual quad core.  I have os 10.7.3.  I use wifi.
Typically, I'll experience difficulty loading websites completely.  Certain sites have a 90% failure rate to load most elements.  Other sites operate quickly from time to time.  Often, a site will simply fail to load at all.  My cable company cannot find anything wrong with my connection and other, newer devices don't have a problem loading sites.  It seems the issue is most likely related to my computer.
Interestingly, I can usually "jump-start" the connection by turning my wifi connection off and on and this will (temporarily) allow me to get an image or video to download.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your time.
