Safari slow to open as application(not web speed)

I get the beach ball for about 45 seconds when opening safari, once it's opened web speeds are fine but the initial startup lags and sometimes gives me a frozen screen. What could be the problem? I've reset safari and emptied cache in terminal. thanks people.

I had problems with my Safari as well, it was about the same issue that you're talking about, where it took a long time to open but actual web surfing wasn't affected.
After that happened for awhile no window would pop up (I had to go to go to my bookmarks to get anywhere) and there was no address bar on anything in Safari, as it turned out my harddrive was failing. So I would say be safe and back everything up and if it gets worse, go take it in for somebody to see. I hope that isn't what's going on, but if it is, it's better to catch it now rather than later.

I updated InDesign today. Now it won't open. Application not responding.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings. It was suppose
to have been fixed in v30.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
What is the hard drive capacity, and how much space remains available on it? Things can slow down if the hard drive is getting full. It is generally recommended to keep at least 15% of the total capacity of the hard drive free as available space.
How long has it been since you performed any hard drive maintenance? (i.e., repaired the hard drive using Disk Utility from the Mac OS X 10.5 Install disc?)

  • Periodically "safari can't open the page" - not a ISP issue

Periodically I will have an issue where I click on a link and anything from the website cannot be opened for about 2 minutes. I get the following message "Safari can’t open the page “https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/” because Safari can’t find the server “xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx”."
    Here are some important notes:
I can access the website on my phone while the issue is occurring on my macbook pro
I can access all other websites
The issue lasts for about 2-3 minutes and all webpages with that address will not work
Any thoughts how to resolve the issue?

(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:  Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db and also clear your History)
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type  killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page. Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 and later appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML in January 2011:  http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/26/apple_revamps_its_public_website_u sing_html5.html
The main reason I mentioned your ISP is that their servers may be too busy, which is why I suggested Open DNS.

  • Safari 5.1 -- 'Open at Login' not opening a browser window?

I have Safari set to open at login (right-click Safari in the Dock > Options > Open at Login). When I reach my desktop, the Safari icon in the Dock bounces and the spotlight lights up as expected, but Safari does not open a browser window -- I have to click the Safari icon or click File > New Window to see a window.
I've used Open at Login with Firefox and Mail and have never experienced this issue; the application window always opens. I've also tried disabling Safari's extensions and resetting Safari's settings (Safari > Reset Safari) with no luck.
I know I can probably trick Safari by adding a shortcut to my homepage to the Dock and have that open at login, but I would like to resolve this if I can. Any ideas?

I found this discussion about three or four months ago. I was having the same problem with Safari not opening, along with my other login items.
The tip posted by Linc on Oct 3, 2011 9:22 AM, resolved the issue.
    Thanks Linc!
HOWEVER... Today, all of the sudden... Out of out of the blue... I have the same problem, again!?
I tried removing, then re-adding, the URL file from the log in items, automatic open list.
    It did not work?
Does anybody have any ideas/solutions regarding this issue? This is becoming VERY aggravating!

  • Safari Slow to Open Webpages

For some reason Safari has started to become really slow at opening web pages. I have a PC connected via Ethernet to a broadband router/hub (via ethernet over mains) and the Mac is connected via ethernet straight into the same broadand router /hub.
If I type a URL into the PC and hit return it loads MUCH quicker than if I type the same URL into Safari on my iMAC.
I have downloaded all of the updates, cleared out history and cache (for both PC and MAc to make sure they are the same) and I have uninstalled Little Snitch just in case.
Is there anything else I can try - I am new to Mac's and so finding may round some of the settings will need some newbie explanations please!
    Thanks

I have uninstalled Little Snitch just in case.
Don't uninstall LittleSnitch; it has nothing to do with this at all. Try these steps, instead:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, restart Safari and see if the speed is improved.

  • Links in Safari slow to open

    Hi there,
I'm still somewhat new to Macs but here's an issue I don't make much progress on. I'm on Mavericks on a new Mac Mini i7. What I notice is that in Safari when I click a link or even on a bookmark Safari is slow to open it at first or gets stuck. A refresh always resolves the issue.
I don't have that in other browsers (or other computers in the house) so I don't think it's a connection/firewall/router/etc issue but seomthing inherent to Safari.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Try this DNS server ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Safari slow to open up web page

When I open safari, it takes a while (20 to 30 secs) to load it's first website (the home page). Once it opens, I have no problem navigating the web. My internet speed is around 6 mps, so that's not the problem. Help!!

    You're welcome.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and *slow Safari down*. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Relaunch Safari. If it's not a third party plugin issue, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari.
If it's ok... the move that .plist file to the Trash.

  • Safari doesn't open, computer without other web browser

Safari does not even open, simply quits unexpectedly within a few seconds. I have no other web browsers downloaded.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

I was downloading a TV episode in Itunes when it froze. The download was not completed. I had to use the emergency shut down processes and then restart my Imac. Everything now takes 2 to 3 minutes to open up. I have access to all my applications,as far as I know,  but everything including my internet is painfully slow. Almost like itues is still running in the background or something.

    Title: Urinalysis Quality Control
    1.0 Purpose:
The purpose of this work instruction is to define the procedure for performing Urinalysis Quality Control.
    2.0 Scope:
This work instruction covers the Laboratory personnel in the Hematology Department.
    3.0 Definitions:
    3.1 ml = Milliliter
3.2 RPM = Revolutions per Minute
    3.3 C = Centigrade
    3.4 UA = Urinalysis
    4.0 Procedures:
    4.1 Principle
MAS Liquid Urinalysis Control is intended for use in the clinical laboratory as a urine control for qualitative urinalysis procedures and microscopic sediment analysis.
    4.2 Reagents and Equipment
4.2.1 MAS Liquid Urinalysis Control Level 1
4.2.2 MAS Liquid Urinalysis Control Level 3
    4.2.3 Centrifuge
    4.2.4 Urine centrifuge tubes
    4.2.5 Urinalysis Reagent Strips
4.2.6 Icto test tablets and mats
    4.2.7 Clinitest tablets
    4.2.8 16x100 test tubes
    4.2.9 pipettes or Kova petters
4.2.10 glass slide and coverslip or Kova slide
    4.2.11 Microscope
    4.3 Frequency
The controls for instrument urinalysis and microscopic analysis should be run once each day of testing in the morning, and again every 8 hours.
    4.4 Procedural Steps
4.4.1 Compare the lot number printed on the MAS Liquid UA Control insert in the package with the lot number of the appropriate bottle of MAS control; they should match.
4.4.2 Thoroughly mix the contents of the vial before each use by gently inverting the vial several times.
4.4.3 After labeling a clean centrifuge tube for the control to be tested, open the vial and pour 12ml of the appropriate MAS control into it.   Allow the control in the tube to equilibrate to room temperature and test in the same manner as an unknown specimen; follow the directions for using the Urisys 2400 (see Urinalysis procedure), refractometer, clinitest tablets (when applicable), and ictotest tablets (when applicable) (see Back up Urinalysis procedure).
4.4.4 Return the unused portion of control to storage between 2-8°C. immediately after removing the above amount.  It will remain stable for 30 days if stored between 2-8°C. and kept tightly capped.
4.4.5 Centrifuge the MAS control for 5 minutes at 1500 rpms and examine microscopically in the same manner as an unknown.
    4.5 Reagent Lot Change
4.5.1 If urine reagent lots change, a new calibration must be performed and (dipsticks, alternate test reagent lots, etc…) QC must be run on UA controls and compared to the new lot readings. This is to verify the performance of the new reagent lot. Log the lot number of the new reagent on the logsheet and the results.
    4.6 Expected Results
The lot number specific MAS control expected results are printed on the corresponding value sheet insert found in each box of MAS control bottles.
Form number F-WI-HEM-052-A is used to record all Urinalysis control results.  Use the following procedure to complete form F-WI-HEM-052-A.
4.6.1 At the beginning of each month, fill in the following information across the top of form F-WI-HEM-052-A for each level of control to be used.
    4.6.1.1 Month and Year
4.6.1.2 Level of control being tested
4.6.1.3 Lot number and expiration date of the control
4.6.1.4 Transpose the Reagent Strip/Method specific
expected range for each parameter being used in
Urinalysis testing from the corresponding lot
                         number/control level value sheet.
4.6.2 On the line corresponding to the current date and time (am or pm) of use, record the results of each parameter tested into the appropriate column.  Review ranges for each parameter to ensure that the control is achieving the expected value.
4.6.3 Record the result of all refractometer testing, Icto test (when applicable), and clinitest (when applicable) into the appropriate column across from the day of testing.  Review ranges to ensure that the control is achieving the expected value.
4.6.4 Record the microscopic test results for WBC and RBC into the appropriate column across from the day (am only) of testing.
4.6.5 The person who performs the test is to place their initials in the Tech column for the current day and time (am or pm) of use to signify that the control ran as expected and patient testing can be performed.  If the control fails to perform as expected, rerun the testing on a fresh aliquot of control.  If it again fails to perform as expected, obtain a new bottle of control and retest on an aliquot from the new bottle.  If after rerunning the test on the fresh bottle the results are still out of expected range, notify supervisor and discontinue patient testing.

I now use the TenFourFox browser on our remaining PowerPC Macs including a G4 PowerBook. Web sites see it as a newer version of FireFox tha and G4 can support and you get much better compatibility. Wikipedia info/history here:

The TenFourFox official site and download is here:

Downside: the last version of TFF that supports plug-ins was V17 so current versions won't play Flash animations. Even when TFF played Flash, the old G-series Mac processors were struggling with modern web video content, so you are not losing much.
If you must have smooth-playing web video, you'll need a new computer, as very little web video content is optimized for our PowerPC processors on old Macs.

  • ITunes and Toast are slow to open and will not quit

The other day I noticed that when I start iTunes it takes forever to start, no window no nothing, then a few minutes later its up and running. Then when I quit the window goes away but the dock icon still has its arrow and it shows up in the "Force Quit Application" window as "Not Responding" and no matter how many times I force it to quit it is still there. No window just the dock icon still has its arrow and it shows up in the "Force Quit Application" window.
I have to restart the Mac to get rid of iTunes. I tried downloading iTunes 6.5 but it will not install.
Now I find that Toast 5.2.1 also does this, when opened it shows no window and can not be forced to quit.

The long delays can be caused by a very huge library. iTunes needs some time to open the library and after quitting, iTunes will write the updated 'iTunes Library' file to disk. In contrary to pre-iTunes 7 versions, this can take some time.
If you don't have a huge (larger than a few hundreds of GBs?) library, the above does not apply.
Concerning your Toast application. I'm running Toast 8 at the moment, but still have Toast 5.2.3 on an external drive. Running and quitting that application gives no trouble whatsoever on my system (OS X 10.4.8).
Did you recently install a new app.? The first thing to try is to Repair Permissions with Disk Utility. If this doesn't fix it, you might have to perform an Archive and Install.
You also might post a question in the Mac OS X forum. Maybe someone there has a hint that does not need a tedious Archive and Install.

  • ITunes 10.2 Upgrade fix temporary. Fix to iTunes 10.2.2 by uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support and install AMDS from 10.0. Worked only to fail in 5 days. iTunes back to very slow to open and will not see device (iPhone) connected. Sorry

I was one this site for 20+ Days and found a fix for 10.2.1 when it failed. I Uninstalled all, following other attempts that failed, then installed latest Version from Apple iTunes 10.2.12. I then uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Support (AMDS) and installed AMDS from the older 10.0 version of iTunes. Success it worked. Today, I am now back to old problem, iTnes takes very long time to open and fails to see my device when connected (iPhone). I really only have iTunes for my iPhone no extensive library a few hundred CD's in music location and no podcasts. I have less than 6 moveis and want to update them now. I am willing to lose all in iTunes library if need be just to get computer to see G3 iPhone with iOS 4.2 and let me synch once again. I like security of backup too. It older iTunes may now not support, that too is OK. I still want to get the 3GS (no 4G desires, yet) and do not care if any of it is the latest from Apple as long as it works.

    Hi Erik,
Your basic suggestion actually worked for me. But this is what I did for others who are having issues removing/installing etc.
    1. Download the latest iTunes 8.2. You should end up with a file iTunesSetup.
    2. If you dont already have WinRAR, download free copy from http://www.rarlab.com/ and install.
    3. Right click on iTunesSetup and choose "Extract" to somewhere you know. eg C:\itunetemp
    4. Open up folder where you extracted iTunesSetup and double-click applemobiledevicesupport.msi
    5. It should ask you if you want to repair or remove... choose remove.
    6. REBOOT your PC.
    7. Go back to where you extracted iTunesSetup and double-click applemobiledevicesupport.msi and go through the install.
    8. Plug in your iPhone.
If all is well iTunes should automatically start and start syncing your iPhone.
    Goodluck all!
    Cheers.
