Safari slow

Since the last update it seems that my whole mac is extremely slow, but no where is this more evident than when running Safari. To qualify this I'll tell you that per activity monitor only half the memory is being used and the CPU usage is fairly slow. I experience the same slowness even when no other apps are open. I have the flash plugin killed and its still slow. What do I mean by slow? Well, the icon is nearly always a Spinning Beach Ball of Death (SBBOD), it takes several minutes for a new page or even my homepage (www.apple.com) to load.I can't flip tabs, scroll, or minimize windows easily either. Want to type in a field? that takes time too. Always very lugged down. Other qualifiers: I have plenty of HD space free, and the drive has only 1% fragmentation. Restaring the machine doesn't help. My broadband connection is fairly fast and continues to test fine. This is a Mid 2010 Mac Mini, running 10.7.4. w/8GB RAM.
Conspiracy theory: They want me to upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion, so the last update slowed things down. But that's probably bunk and I'm just being cynnical. That's something Microsoft would do.
Random consideration: Lately my AEBN router has had fluctuating connection strength when that's never been an issue before. Perhaps too many neighbors are transmitting wifi on the same channel. Then again, my wife's safario browsing hasn't been an issue, nor is it slow on my wifi iPad.
Desperate for a soliution

I appreciate you helping me dig into this. FYI, I am getting alerts from drive Genius that my drive has a lot of bad blocks and its telling me to back up and replace drive. Unfortunately Applecare won't replace the drive until it actually fails. I wrote a little about it here.

  • Safari Hangs when multiple tabs and windows open [was part of safari slow-]

This is to create a new topic with regards to Safari, but with many windows and/or tabs open.
Some have posted information in the previous topic, i.e.: safari slow - has anyone talked to someone at Apple?
This post will be specifically about hangs and ball spinning cursors when many windows are being used simultaneously within Safari.
    Please post your comments below.

    No worries have sorted it now...you need to go to;
System Prefences-->General-->Untick the box which says 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps' (A couple of lines from the bottom)
And then most importantly restart the mac.  It was this last step I never did and thats why I couldn't get it to stop this unwanted behaviour.

  • Safari slows and crashes on old imac

I have an 8 year old imac with a problem that I think might be caused by adobe flash player. I spoke to the people at Apple's technical help line and they said it sounded like something with adobe flash player.
The problem seems to have 2 symptoms.
One is that safari keeps crashing. It seems to happen a lot when watching videos or any page with a lot of animation. For example when I was trying to watch a page with a house floorplan I got the "spinning beachball" and finally had to force quit and then got a message saying "the application safari quit while unresponsive." When watching a slideshow on Flickr safari suddenly quit and I got the message "The application safari quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the flash player plug-in."  I get similar crashes and messages when watching Youtube or looking at the web sites of various newspapers or radio stations. The other night for the first time I was watching some video using safari and got the message "A script in this movie is causing adobe flash player 10 to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?"
The other problem is that something is causing safari to slow to a crawl. It doesn't seem to happen with any other applications. It is especially bad when watching videos such as Youtube. I can only watch youtube in the lowest resolution and smallest screen and then it is stop and go motion with long stops in between action. I used the Activity Monitor application to try to see what was going on. I don't understand most of it, but in the part that shows the percent of CPU being used, when I watch youtube, or almost any time safari slows to a crawl, the percent of CPU being used shoots right up to 100% and stays there. It seems something is hogging all the CPU.
Is this a problem with flash player? Some people suggested I uninstall flash player and then download and install the latest version. If I am reading it correctly it appears that because my imac is old I cannot use the latest version of flash player. I looked at the adobe web site and only saw pages for downloading flash player for intel macs. I don't know what version of flash player my computer can use and I don't know where on the web site to find out nor where to download it. I saw a page for "Archived Flash Player versions" but I wasn't sure if this was for Mac or Windows. It also had "debugger" versions. I don't know what that is. Someone also suggested after uninstalling and installing flash player that I repair disc permissions. Is that right?
My imac is a 1GHz PowerPC G4 with 1GB of RAM. The operating system is OS 10.5.8  According to the page on Adobe's website that shows the version of flash player that is on my computer I have MAC 10,1,102,64.  My safari version is 5.0.5.
Despite my imac being 8 years old it has worked almost flawlessly the whole time, other than this one problem. It would be great if I could get it back into good working order.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

that's what i use on mine, works-no problems. keep in mind if you insert the dongle you can unplug the wire to your keyboard. you'll be no worse off than you are now.

  • Safari slow work and stupid

safari slow work and stupid-update now

Could you please specify what exactly do you mean by slow work? If loading pages takes forever try this:
    Try to reset Safari settings:
    1.Open Safari
    2. Click on Safari menu at the top(to the right from the Apple logo)
    3. Select preferences/privacy tab
    4. Click on Remove all website data
    5. Close Safari.
    Delete Safari cache files:
    1. Click on finder
    2. Look for GO menu at the top
    3. click on GO and hold down the option key. This will show user library folder.
    4. Click on Library and look for Caches folder
    5. In caches folder open com.apple.Safari folder
    6. Move to trash Cache.db file.
This should solve the issue. If it will not help try to turn off Safari extentions
    1.Open Safari
    2. Click on Safari menu at the top(to the right from the Apple logo)
    3. Select preferences
    4. Find extentions tab
    5. Turn off all the extentions
    6. Relauch Safari
    Hope this will help

golden grape - Welcome to the discussions!
DNS problems are very irritating - and some of the hardest to figure out.
Let's start gathering some information to see how things are set up. Open the Network Utility and go to the "Lookup" tab. Pick one or two addresses and look them up. How long does the server report it took to do the lookup (query time). How long did you wait from clicking go?
P.S. sometimes the best thing is to ignore these things for an hour or so - it's often a temporary thing while your DNS server works out the addresses you need. Also - mac OS will cache the addresses - so once you have them - you don't need to wait anymore on DNS to find things. Try to leave your mac on as long as possible - unless you have some bad software or corruption on a disk - the longer it runs, the faster things will get.

7ms! Your DNS server is a lot faster than mine.
I can confidently say that you don't have DNS problems. If you had DNS problems - firefox and Network Utility should be equally slow. This really has nothing to do with mini hardware either.
It would be best to ask a new question titled "Safari slow - FireFox fast" in the Safari group. I'm sure a lot of people there will have good ideas to find out what causes safari to go slow when firefox can browse the same site with speed.
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=169
One things I can suggest is:
    * Temporarily change your Safari preferences to open the bookmarks or a blank page. You will know if safari is waiting on something locally or the web page is drawing slowly. I doubt this is it - but you never know until you try to narrow down what exactly is slow.

I am using school's network now.
Does the same thing happen if you connect to the internet through 'normal' means, such as a home internet connection (broadband, dialup etc), or does it just happen at school?

  • The great safari slow down.

For three days now safari has been very very slow to load webpages. When I type in the URL safari connects to the site and then can take 2-4 mins to load. Say I try www.bbc.co.uk it will take two mins for the home page to load.
If I switch to Firefox all websites load quickly so I know its not an issue with my dsl connection.
Pings and traceroutes to sites come back fine and responses are good.
Its just when I use safari.
I have emptied cache and history.
Restarted (many times in the last three days)
    Reset my dsl router.
    Checked cables
Turned off the built in 10.4.2 firewall.
    Any Ideas ?

This is a wide-spread issue. Just check out all of the posts in this forum that relate to Safari slowing down, crashing, etc., etc.
I've been having the same problem for about 1 week or more. Tried all the things that you tried, including trashing Safari and reinstalling. I suspect that it has to do with a liveupdate of Safari software that occurred shortly before the problems began. I also tried trashing Safari again and reinstalling the older version. Didn't work.
The info I've read seems to indicate that the problem affects more than the Safari application itself; the installation may add components to the OS also. This would appear to mean that the problem can't be erased by just trashing the application.
This problem is affecting both Tiger and Panther. So far Apple has been silent, as far as I can tell. Meanwhile I've had to say goodbye to Safari. Unfortunate. There just aren't great substitutes for it.
Has anyone with a service support warranty (3 months) still in effect tried to call Apple support about this?

  • No Sound, Safari Slow & MacBook Pro Very Slow after upgrading to Yosemite.

    Hi All,
Upgrading to Yosemite has resulted in the following issues with my computer/laptop:
    1. I have lost all sound and the sound options are no longer there after looking in Preferences.
    2. Safari only loads parts of pages and then takes forever to load the rest.
    3. Generally the computer has been slow with processes taking over the CPU and there seems to be a lot of hard memory swaps.
Attached is the EtreCheck.    Any help would be appreciated.   It appears that I also am missing some daemons that are launching.

  • Safari slow on Apple's website

Safari runs dismally slow on apple's website, which is why i'm posting this using Firefox. What's the deal Apple?

I don't think it's the browsers. I came to apples forums tonight to see if there was an answer to this. Haven't found anything yet.
I use Windows Vista Business, I previously used XP Pro and Home versions and any computer I use, it's slow. I mainly use Internet explorer 7, I even tried it with safari and it was still slow. It kinda locks everything up while the site is loading and won't let you do anything until it's done. It's really a pain compared to other sites. Even if you have multiple tabs open, you cannot go to another tab and browse while APPLE is loading. Come on Webmasters....

  • Start up slow - safari slow

I have a macbook - recently no startup sound - also, safari is very slow to load - no other problems - disc utility and disc permissions run and show no problems - any ideas on the startup sound disappearing ??? thanks

Are you serious about this question? "is your volume turned up when you shut it down?"
    lol
    you sound like microsoft assistance.
    :P just kidding..

  • Safari slow under Mountain Lion

A friendly enquiry to the Apple Expert Community
After I have upgraded my LION configuraiton with the latest MOUNTAIN LION Release, Safari has become very slow in loading web pages. I am connected to a highly performing Internet DSL Link (VDSL 20kbit's DL / 2kBit's UL).
Under LION I had no problems in this area. Also I must mention; when using FIrfox under Mountain Lion (ML), the Internet and Web Page Loading Process is very fast!
What have I done for test purposes:
    1) I deactivated all iCould services to see whether it would improve - no change - still slow
    2) I Did a clean ML Installation with no software etc on it - from scratch - all patches loaded etc. - Safari STILL SLUGGISH !
    Assumption:
There is a bug or new feature within ML, possibly the new combined URL and Search Bar feature (searching ahead, etc) which slows down the load of Web Pages... ?
    Anyhow,
The results of my short tests give me a strong indication (proof) of, the slowness of Safari 6 under ML is not caused by mal user handling or buggy software installed, but an initial insufficiency of the first release of ML
    Question:
Does anybody have already found a slution to the described problem?
    many thanks for some feedback
    Urs

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
Click the column headed Kind in the list of keychain items to arrange the list by kind. Look for certificates that are expired or invalid. Delete any you find.

  • Problem with safari slow speed

    Hi ,
I realized this problem when it was my first try to use macbookpro retina . it's just a few days that I bought my macbookpro retina. it's too slow compared with my older macbookpro!!!
      what should I do?
    thnx

Take it into your local Apple Store and see if they can reproduce the problem. You're still within your 14-day "grace" period, so you could always exchange your MBP-R for a new one, or return it for a refund.
It shouldn't be running anything slowly. Unless it's something with your wifi connection when you use Safari. The Apple Store has their own widi set up and can test Safari as well.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Links in Safari slow to open

    Hi there,
I'm still somewhat new to Macs but here's an issue I don't make much progress on. I'm on Mavericks on a new Mac Mini i7. What I notice is that in Safari when I click a link or even on a bookmark Safari is slow to open it at first or gets stuck. A refresh always resolves the issue.
I don't have that in other browsers (or other computers in the house) so I don't think it's a connection/firewall/router/etc issue but seomthing inherent to Safari.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Try this DNS server ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Safari slowness issues...affect more than Safari...***?

Safari started giving me trouble loading pages on the 18th of November. I DO NOT use Yahoo mail or any other remote mail (except I do check mail at .mac before downloading). Absolutely no recent software updates.
Had my provider PING my computer, check signal, connected directly to cable modem vs. router....same problems.
Mostly it's that Safari is slow, gets "stuck" loading pages or intermittently fails to load pages ("can't find server"). I also notice that Mail is delayed and even System Preferences' dock icon bounces a lot and delays before opening. IE is better for speed but still is delayed.
From the posts it seems people are having various internet issues related to Safari so it seems to be something related to apps vs. individual computers.
Any idea on a fix? Could it be spyware or a virus? Should I go to another browser, and if so, how do I download it when Safari is being so naughty?
Maybe people can post what all apps and sites they are having a problem with so Apple can get a handle on this. I'm glad to see the other posts here because without knowing that others are having this problem, I'd feel like I was going crazy.

I should also add that apps like Word and Quicken load effortlessly like they should. The slowness seems to be associated with anything internet related (though I don't know why System Prefs is slowed on startup). I am using Safari 1.3.

  • Safari slow and Not Loading Web Pages after changing Modems?

Hello...I recently changed from an AT&T DSL modem to a Knology Cable Modem to improve speed and overall network capablity.  However, ever since I have changed I have had problems with Safary lagging or not loading the websites.  It doesn't do it all the time, but periodically.  Sometimes it is worse than others.
Basic issue: When using Safari, it stalls when loading a website.  Sometimes it will load, other times it will say that Safari cannot load the website.  If you wait a while and retry loading it, it may then load it.
Has anyone else seen something similar to this or know what I can do to fix the problem?  It is rather frustrating.
    Thank you,
    Jim

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
