Safari slowdown after the latest security update

I am using Mac OS X 10.4.5 (8H14)on an iMac G5, and after the latets security update i have noticed that Safari has slowed down quite a lot as follows:
I launch Safari, and the "home" page's URL, which I have set to "apple.com," takes forever to show on the screen. There is a delay of several seconds (at least 10-15 seconds), before Safari opens the page. This happens with all bookmarks I have in Safari. However, I launch FireFox, and it works as fast as ever.
I have reset Safari, cleared the cache, deleted the icons, etc., but nothing works. I read about a Safari speed fix at another post, but i don't use Airport, just a wired DSL and router, no TCP/IP.

This is weird, but Safari is working fast again. All I did was to quit Safari and use FireFox to post my problems with safari. After using the bookmarks I have in FireFox (the same ones I have in Safari) to check if the problem was also the same with FireFox, then I quit FireFox and launched Safari, and Safari is now working normal.

  • After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file.

After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file. HELP!!!

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • Slowdown after the Latest Tiger update

I posted this in response to many having issues with computer slow down after the latest tiger patch. I thought i'd post it on it own.. Hopefully it will help.
I don't know if anyone has stated this already, but the most recent update ends up loading and turning on just about every font in your computer.
You need to go into Font Book and turn off the ones you don't need.
We have 5 computer in our office and this was the issue with every one of them. After turning off all the extra fonts and restarting, everything was back up to speed and working.
Additionally, MS Word and Excel would choke when launched.. i guess they don't have the resources to handle large numbers of fonts. After we turned all the extras off they now work as normal... (There's a joke there somewhere but i'll leave it alone for now)
I hope this helps a lot of you.

I second this. Made a massive difference when I deactivated the Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc fonts as I never use them.
    Thanks for the tip Marshall.

  • 'Mail' won't get e-mail after the latest Security Update...

    Hey all...
Title says it all. I did the Security Update a few days ago. After the restart, I lost all e-mail from 12/19 on, and have not been able to get new mail since then. The mac in doubt is a G5 iMac 20" running Tiger 10.4.11... No other updates have been done, and all of the other applications seem to work well. I know this is an 'update' issue, as I'm able to get new mail on my iPhone, Powerbook and work Dell.
On a side note, I called Apple on this, and pretty much said the 'update' wasn't an issue.. really, cause it started happening right after the update..
Any insight to fix this would be awesome...
    Thanks,
    Craig

I did remove 'Mail' from the Library/Cache folder and then 'Envelope Index' from the Library/Mail folder.. rebooted after eraser... and nothing new, except for a prompt to re-install 'Mail'.. which I did...
There's a problem there. Unless you deleted the actual Mail application, there would be no reason for any message to reinstall Mail triggered, since it's still there.
At this point, you'll need to do an Archive & Install, with the Preserve Users and Network Settings option. This will remove the current system and replace it with a new one; all programs and data will be left intact. To do this:
    1. Quit all running applications and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
    2. Insert your Mac OS X install/restore disc and boot your Mac from it (hold down the 'C' key until you see the statup screen).
    3. Select your language and proceed with an install as you normally would, but choose Archive & Install, with Preserve Users and Network Settings; run the installer.
    4. After your Mac restarts, eject the disk, then apply the 10.4.11 Combo Update (quit Software Update without updating anything).
    5. Run Software update to bring your system current, and delete the Previous Systems folder.
    6. Repair Permissions again, then restart your Mac and test for this problem.

  • Problems(?) after the latest Security Update from 2010-09-20

Last night I was prompted that there was a new security update (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4361), so I let it install and restart. After the restart, the date/time was all messed up. It was set to "2000-12-31 at 4.01.42 PM" (why would it do that!?!?) for some reason AND firewall rules seems to have changed. I kept getting a popup message to allow/deny access to these processes: DNSResponder and Configd. I have very little idea of what these really are except that I couldn't connect to internet without allowing at least the DNSResponder. Is this a normal behavior? Has anyone experienced similar issues after this security update? Is there a way to compare the firewall settings before and after the update? (Does it keep a backup of the original settings somewhere??) Is this a cause for concern?

Yep, problems here as well, after installing the update. Can't seem to get an answer to the problem, and now I am having issues getting my new wireless router to work with the Macbook. Not sure if the problems are related, but sure would like to get this thing fixed. May have to visit a Genius.

  • Anyone else feeling considerable lag/slowdowns after the latest update?

Everything from opening Safari to launchpad and Word, my Mac has become laggy after the latest security update just a couple of days ago. Even the downloads window takes longer time to open. Theres even mouse lag and lag even when I type at some instances. I can tell and feel when my Mac slows down.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

  • Does the latest security update to Safari effect OSX v10.6.8?

Does the latest security update (Fix issued 25/02/14) to Safari not effect Mac OSX v10.6.8 Snow Leopard? Software update has not flagged it up in Snow leopard, so presumably it is only Lion & Mavericks that had the flaw.

    Correct!

  • After the latest OS update, Safari locks up when trying to flip back to the previous page

After the latest OS update, Safari locks up when trying to flip back to the previous page using the two finger sweep.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

The version of “Adobe Flash Player” on your system does not include the latest security updates and has been blocked. To continue using “Adobe Flash Player”, download an updated version from Adobe’s website.

You haven't actually asked a question, but as stated you should only download Flash Player directy from Adobe.
Nor have you said what version of OS X and Safari you are running.
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3 or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.0.1.152 is for Lion.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

  • Exclamation point appearing beside songs after the latest itunes update.

    Good Afternoon,
After the latest Itunes update songs in my the majority of my songs in library now have an ! beside them.
The songs in question appear to be ones that I have brought over from my older devices (downloaded from CDs), I know how to transfer music from my I-pod to I-Tunes and I have had to do this is in the past when I got a new PC however I don't want to go through the process of re-transferring these songs from my ipod back to my itunes again.
However If I have to go through this process again is there a way to cement these songs into my I tunes library and will not disappear again after the next update?

  • Trouble connecting to Airport after installing latest security update

Hi, I have just spent an hour with a level 2 SBC DSL tech and they could not resolve my problem. The problem is this: After installing the latest security update released on March 13 for OS 10.3.9, I can no longer securely connect to my airport. It may have something to do with the keychain because this has happened several times before, most recently after the previous security update about 2 weeks ago. Usually after much playing around, I get a window asking for permission for my new network settings to access the keychain. Once I say yes, all works fine. This time, I am not getting that prompt. Even though I have a full signal showing I am connected to the base, it will not pick up and IP address. Finally, the SBC tech had me disable the wireless key on the desktop pc that is the primary computer on the system and immediately my connections works. If I enable the wireless security key, I lose the connection. As I am completely open to hackers with the wireless security disabled, this is a big problem. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can anybody help me?! Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi, my first post here!
I too experienced this problem this evening, after applying the latest security update to Panther. I had verified that the wireless base station was working correctly and that it's WEP key hadn't become corrupted. There were no error messages after re-starting the Mac, just no IP number via airport.
The keychain utility would hang if any attempt was made to alter the password for WEP, and the airport utility hung too. I used Disc Utility to verify permissions, which found dozens of errors - haven't done any maintenance for months - and fixed them.
On re-starting, Airport was 'OFF' so turned it on, was asked to allow access to keychain, and all is working again.
Thank you to those of you who posted the suggestion about permissions, you certainly saved my evening!

  • MAC WILL NOT REBOOT AFTER DOWNLOADING LATEST SECURITY UPDATE

I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I patched up what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.  I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball.  I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out.  I tried to use an older System Disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it.  I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail.  Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail, maybe nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hello
It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".

  • Does reapplying 10.4.11 combo update negate the latest security updates?

I've reapplied the 10.4.11 combo update in an attempt to trouble shoot some problems I've been having. My question is, "Does reapplying 10.4.11 combo update negate the latest security updates?" I've checked my computer using the "Software Update" option, and I'm given the message that I'm up to date. But that may be due to the fact that there's a receipt of the security update in my receipt's folder.

    Steve:
If the Combo update was downloaded previous to the last security update being available it will not have included the security update. If the Combo update was downloaded after the security update was available, it will have included the latest security update. As new updates become available, the Combo update is updated so that it includes the latest updates. If you are concerned that the security update may not have been included in the Combo update, or you are sure that you downloaded the Combo update a while previous to the availability of the latest security update you can either:
    1. Download the stand alone security update and install it over what is already on your computer, or
    2. Download the current Combo update and install it.
In either case, remember to Repair Disk Permissions in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility before and after installation.

  • MacBookPro Freezes after Installing Latest Security Update 2006-003

After downloading and installing the latest security update 2006-003, MacBook Pro freezes when trying to do anything. Seems to do ok in safe mode but did freeze when trying to verify disk with Disk Utility. (did not try to repair as I am out of town at a motel without Tiger disks). Any suggestions before calling apple?
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Since my post, I think I have solved the problem. At least MyMacBook is working ok so far. What I did is started up in safe mode (for the third time) then I went through the "Library" and looked for stuff that looked like it wouldn't work on a MacBook. This included some Norton Utility things. Also went through preferences and Application Support and did the same thing. By the way I had transferred all this stuff from my old Mac using the transfer app and connecting the two with firewire.
Anyway, it's been working for about an hour. I'll keep this post open for a couple of days to see if it keeps working.

  • Menu items dimmed after installing latest security update

has anyone else seen this problem? after installing the latest security update 2008-02 on my macbook, file menu and other items are dimmed (grayed out) after a restart. i have to right click on the desktop to bring up the contextual menu before the menu items become available. after that, the machine works as expected. the problem does not exist on my intel imac, which has identical software installed. it's more an annoyance than a big problem, but does anyone have a clue about how to fix it? i've tried trashing preference files for the finder, but that didn't seem to work. thanks in advance.

well, i couldn't figure it out, so i reinstalled leopard and updated it to 10.5.2 with the latest security update and everything is working normally. something must have been broken in my previous set up.
