Safari slower than Firefox - especially on 2 finger scrolls while loading..

When I surf the web on my air I notice that Safari loads a page and will not let me 2 finger scroll until it has loaded enough or has the flash or java app all the way in... while Firefox will load a page faster and allow me to 2 finger scroll while its loading.... I notice this on pages that have flash banners or stuff on them... at first I thought it was the air being to slow so I tried firefox on the same pages and they load quicker and always allow me to 2 finger scroll..... Anyone else notice this ? I prefer to use Safari but I cant stand the stalling it does while loading certain pages with banner ads or too much flash/java...
Basically until Safari's blue bar is gone you'll get 2 finger scroll stopage while Firefox will scroll... is firefox more optimized or something... ?

Running OS 10.6.7 plus last Firefox before 4.0. Reluctant to move to 4.0 as it is still new.
This is a new problem, beginning in the last month or so for me, I think. While it seems much longer, I believe the delay is about 20 seconds, and it does happen every time Firefox launches.
Further, sometimes (do not yet see a pattern) well after launch, when attempting to navigate on a website...Firefox isn't paying attention. I think the interruption may be 20 seconds here, as well. Then all is well.
No magic living color pinwheel displayed by uncle Mac during either delay.
Did I mention table pounding frustration when on deadline?

• Is Safari Slower than Firefox?

I've just switched from a PC using Firefox browser to a MacBook using the Safari browser. I am noticing that Safari seems to be much slower in moving through websites.
Is that just me or is it a problem with Safari?
Thanks!

Why not get firefox for your mac then? If you're really daring the release candidate of version 3.5 is really fast and supports 3 finger swiping for going forward and back. You can get it here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-rc.html

• Safari is slower than Firefox - Why

Hi together,
Safari - Firefox - both Finalversion
Why is Safari slower than Firefox, both has "Werbefilter" activated. Safari runs since 2:25 h
Can someone explane that solution. Why Safari is slower than Firefox. Thank You

HI,
It can depend on how long you save your History, how many Bookmarks you have. Safari is far more secure a web browser than Firefox. Also, if you have any third party Safari plugins installed or use Safari Extensions, that can slow a browser down, or if you visit sites that stream Flash content, that can also be a factor.
Very hard to compare two browsers. One written by Apple, one written by Mozilla.
Your profile: v10.6.4. If that's the case, keep your Mac OS X software up to date by clicking your Apple menu / Software Update.
Also... maintenance. Boot from your install disc once a month. Check to see if there are any errors on the startup disk that need repairing. Problems with the startup disk can definitely cause any browser problems.
Using OpenDNS or GoogleDNS can speed your browsers up. Instructions here.
Slow Safari: Speeding It Up
Safari and Firefox and Google Chrome all load pages at the same speed on v10.6.5 / Safari 5.0.3 / Firefox 3.3.6 and Chrome 9.0.597.10

• Is Safari really slower than Firefox?!

Hello,
I'm trying to migrate to Safari, after years of using Firefox. One unsettling thing I've discovered is that for some reason when I click a bookmark in Safari very often there is a pregnant pause before it takes my to the requested page. Sometimes it freezes up all together & never takes me to the page so I have to retry getting to the page. This never happended with Firefox.
Are my Safari settings somehow off or is Safari really that much slower than Firefox?
Thanks.
Jim

Something's not right. Safari and Firefox should load pages the same.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select:  Clear History / Remove all website data / Clear the Downloads list
Click Reset. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

• IE slower than Firefox

Hi Guys,
do you know why IE 7 is so much slower than Firefox to finish loading the convergence page ?
we can see at the bottom of IE 7 how the elements (ex.. 30 items remaining) are loading and with Firefox there isn't delay at all.
is there a solution or reason for this?
Note: I'm using the latest SCS 7, and it was the same case with SCS 6.
thanks a lot

For a little context:
IE7 was released in October 2006 with Firefox 2 released around the same time.
IE8 was released in March 2009 with Firefox 3.5 released around the same time.
Are you comparing Firefox 2 performance with IE7 or a more recent release of Firefox?
we can see at the bottom of IE 7 how the elements (ex.. 30 items remaining) are loading and with Firefox there isn't delay at all. Most of the Convergence files (images/javascript/css etc.) should be cached so the first time Convergence is accessed it will need to download a number of items.
Also have you implemented the Convergence performance tuning steps:

Specifically the "Enhancing Browser-Side Caching of Static Files" and "Configuring Application Server to Compress Files Sent to the Client"?
is there a solution or reason for this?
Convergence 2 may provide performance improvements but only time will tell. In the mean time I would advise getting a copy of Convergence patch 13 (you need to log a Sun support request) and trying that.

• Two finger scrolling while dragging files in finder

Hi guys.
I'm new to this forum but have used it in the past so I'll start by saying thank you for all the people who post on here.
Now for my query, and this one is driving me nuts because it seems like such a simple thing that is either missing or I can't figure out how to use for the life of me.
I know while dragging files in finder when you take them near to the bottom or top of the window it will scroll up or down. The problem is the area on which you have to move you mouse is about 5 mm big and if you go too far it stops scrolling etc. It's very clumsy. It amazed me that while dragging a file I could not still two-finger scroll, which would mean that you could control the speed. It would also be a lot more efficient.
I have searched countless forums and through google but cannot find an answer. If anyone can tell me how to two-finger scroll while dragging files please help me?! Or if there are any plug-ins that have more customisability that could allow it.
Thanks in advance for you help!

It is not possible to two-finger scroll while dragging.

• Is Safari hotter than Firefox on MacBook Air 2GB?

Will Safari make my MacBook Air - 2GB, mid 2009 - run hotter than Firefox?

CPU temp of 133?
Hopefully that reading is in Fahrenheit so I'll need to change my Preferences in iStat as I normally work in Celsius
These readings are from a 2011 MBA with a 1.7GHz i5 Processor and 4GB Memory so we are not comparing appples with oranges but it will give you a ballpark figure.  Software is Lion (10.7.3)
Running Photoshop my CPU temp varies between 80 to 100 degrees F with the 'Enclosure' temps in the mid 70's.
To comment on your original question...
Regardless of whether I use Safari, Firefox or Chrome my CPU stays between 90 and 100 degrees F.

• How do I set Mail to launch clicked links in Safari, rather than Firefox?

I have both Safari and Firefox installed on my computer. Safari is the default browser, but when I click a link on an email that I have received, Mail opens it in Firefox. This happens even if I have Safari open and Firefox closed. In that case, Mail opens Firefox and then displays the location of the link. I can't find an option in Mail settings, to set the default browser for clicked links to Safari.

Great news Matt, thanks.
Likely it was done when you installed Firefox, it asks if you want to make it the default browser.

• I am using Mac running OS X Mavericks (10.9.1) and Firefox 26. Two finger scroll down is not working all of a sudden only with Firefox.

Hardware : Macbook Pro
Operating System : OS X Mavericks v10.9.1
Browser : Firefox v26.0
All of a sudden, two finger scrolls doesn't work. Thats only when I am within Firefox Window. Everywhere it just works great. I got NO scroll bars at the edges of browser(Firefox) too. No way of proper browsing other than switching to Safari.
Request to fix this asap.
Thanks.

I'm having the same problem but what I found was the scrolling on my iMac was it works until you try and swipe to go back a page. Then the only solution is the quit the program and restart it.

I'm currently using FireFox v25 but the same issue is in v27.0.1.

• Why is Firefox 4 and 5 slower than firefox 3 in Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

You told me Firefox 4 was fast, so I upgraded from the latest release of 3.xx. Immediately I started seeing a pinwheel mouse cursor when I had more than about 5 or 6 tabs showing (the pinwheel is the Mac OS X equivalent of the Windows hourglass, at least in Snow Leopard). I have the latest release of Firefox 5 and I'm still seeing pinwheels.
This happens several times a day, but not every time Firefox opens. It usually takes a few minutes for the pinwheel to show up. When it gets to where the pinwheel appears to be permanent, I Force Quit Firefox and restart it, and that helps for a while.

Did you want me to re-post this in that forum or can one of the mods from here move it?

• Why is FireFox 7.02 slower than FireFox 7.01?

After upgrading FireFox to 7.02, the browser became really slow. The letters don't appear when I type. It only appears after I am done typing. Sometimes the pages don't load. And opening up a tab takes longer. Loading speed is very slow.
My computer runs perfectly fine, just not the browser. My internet connection is excellent.

I am having exactly the same problems. I have noticed that when a website or link fails to load properly, I have to click the link a second time and about half the time that seems to work. There is clearly a problem and I am anxious for Foxfire to fix this problem!

• Safari MUCH slower than Explorer on same computer. Why?

I have Comcast cable internet and I've noticed that my Safari (1.3.2) has been getting increasingly slow, very slow over the past several weeks. So I've been using Explorer (5.2.3) which is blazing fast comparatively. Why is this and is there anything I can do to Safari to get the same performance I'm getting from IE?
Safari has all my bookmarks. I've done the import bookmarks thing into IE but it just creates a "Bookmarks.plist" which, as far as I can tell, does nothing. Also my email application automatically launches Safari for links in email and I can't figure out how to get it to launch IE instead.
So if I can get these latter two issues resolved I'm fine using IE. So I'll take advice on that as well.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Safari 1.3.2

Internet Explorer has not been supported by Microsoft for some time. It is not as secure as current browsers. Firefox, Camino, Mozilla, Opera would be viable free alternatives to Safari.
Safari
If you are experiencing slower than usual operation, there are some steps you can take to perhaps improve the speed:
General - System Maintenance is important. Have a look at this MacWorld article for guidance.
Safari - Safari menu>Empty Cache is a good start.
Unplug your cable box, wait 30 seconds, plug-in to reset your ISP's address.
Go to your Network>TCP panel. Select "configure IPv6". Set to "off". Select "apply".
Go to your User Library>Safari folder. Move the Icon folder to the trash. This folder holds the small image files appearing next to the web address in the address bar. This file can become corrupt slowing things down. When you move it to the trash, Safari creates a new folder on the restart. Over time, the icon file rebuilds itself based on sites you access.
You can also move the Safari preference file .com.apple.safari.plist to the trash. When you restart Safari you'll need to reset your custom preferences, so mark them down for reference before moving the file. This file is accessed by a number of applications including Mail. Each time the file is accessed it is susceptible to corruption. Trashing the old gives you a fresh version. The file can be found at User>Library>Preferences
Restart Safari after completing the above.
There are other steps, however, I think this is a good start. Post back with results.

golden grape - Welcome to the discussions!
DNS problems are very irritating - and some of the hardest to figure out.
Let's start gathering some information to see how things are set up. Open the Network Utility and go to the "Lookup" tab. Pick one or two addresses and look them up. How long does the server report it took to do the lookup (query time). How long did you wait from clicking go?
P.S. sometimes the best thing is to ignore these things for an hour or so - it's often a temporary thing while your DNS server works out the addresses you need. Also - mac OS will cache the addresses - so once you have them - you don't need to wait anymore on DNS to find things. Try to leave your mac on as long as possible - unless you have some bad software or corruption on a disk - the longer it runs, the faster things will get.

7ms! Your DNS server is a lot faster than mine.
I can confidently say that you don't have DNS problems. If you had DNS problems - firefox and Network Utility should be equally slow. This really has nothing to do with mini hardware either.
It would be best to ask a new question titled "Safari slow - FireFox fast" in the Safari group. I'm sure a lot of people there will have good ideas to find out what causes safari to go slow when firefox can browse the same site with speed.
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=169
One things I can suggest is:
* Temporarily change your Safari preferences to open the bookmarks or a blank page. You will know if safari is waiting on something locally or the web page is drawing slowly. I doubt this is it - but you never know until you try to narrow down what exactly is slow.

I am using school's network now.
Does the same thing happen if you connect to the internet through 'normal' means, such as a home internet connection (broadband, dialup etc), or does it just happen at school?
Matt

• Why is firefox slower than before the reset?

The past 8 weeks Firefox has been extremely slow. I've tried safe mode and all the other web suggestions and finally did the 'Reset'. Now Firefox is slower than it was before the reset. Google, Duck Duck Go and IE. I've also tried Safari, which I didn't like, but all of them were faster than Firefox. Can anybody help me? I'm not that computer savvy to do a clean install and don't the $$ to have it done. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you can do a clean install by following these instructions:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
