Safari: Sort bookmarks

Is there a way to sort bookmarks while managing bookmarks in Safari?

I absolutely agree with Teknomad.
I have spent years in trying to keep Safari bookmarks in sorted order. When adding a bookmark it goes on the bottom and cannot be sorted without doing a drag-n-drop (this includes imports). With a lot of bookmarks that are needed are at the bottom and the place to store them is at to is at the top, a sort system is needed.
Another reason for a sorting system is that when importing bookmarks from another browser there is duplicity of URL's. Deletion of older URL's is/will be required. I have even used Excel for this process, UGH.
Exporting to another browser for sorting likewise is a waste of time and manpower or workload if you prefer.
Apple is wrong in not helping the end user.
I have ended up using Firefox (cannot stand slow Netscape) as a result of the lack of sorting capabilities. When Safari was first introduced, it was difficult to work the bookmarks and so Firefox was an easier/simpler choice. Netscape did have the advantage of sort ascending or descending, however.
APPLE, WE NEED HELP!!!!!

  • Will Safari sort bookmarks Alphabetically?

Is there a way to sort my bookmarks alphabetically? It makes me a little crazy trying to find my bookmarks when they are just listed the way I added them.
I know I can go in a do it manually if I "show all bookmarks", but that seems kind of archaic not mention really slow.
Anyone able to help me out? Many thanks for advice...

You have got to be kidding?? Wow. What a design flaw, how can Apple think that we wouldn't want that option? Hummmm...let's see I guess I can do it myself from the "all bookmarks" view. Geez...I hate to move everything to Firefox and import it back. To me that's a real pain.
It's funny but people told me that Safari has lots of problems but from the moment I opened it I totally fell in love with Safari!! Now that I'm hooked I find something simple like arranging bookmarks can't be done. I guess I have some decisions to make. Either go back to Firefox (it does have some nice qualities using my iMAC) or just grin and bear it with Safari.
Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it.

  • I cannot find the app/Safari Sort?  I too want my bookmarks in alphabetical order.  I Belive I am using Maverick

I read some of the earlier posts about using an app, "Safari Sort."  However, I was unable to find an app named that.  How or What do I need in order to put my bookmark folders in Alphabetical order without have to drag & drop each folder manually(alpha order)?

I've been watching this (general) thread for years and waiting patiently for Mozilla to address it, w/out any success at all - obviously. And, no, the answers are NOT helpful to me!
I understand many people have no interest in bookmarks but clearly lots of people still use them. If you're going to have the feature that purports to sort bookmarks, for pete's sake, make it work. I'd think it would be an embarrassment to have a part of your program malfunction for so long. I mean, what are you folks? IE!?! Why don't you just ask someone to spend a couple days addressing the issue and get it straightened out? (Clearly i care enough about it but I don't code, so… I'm useless.)
For the record, a user shouldn't have to individually sort each folder within their Bookmarks folder. One should be able to pick an option that would apply to all folders. Sure, leave the ability to sort individually but add an "apply to all" feature to the mother folder. Then, find a way to have it automatically maintain that status, whatever is selected. Doesn't sound like that difficult a task, given all the other great things you guys and girls do all the time! That's my ¢.
By the way, I'm using a MB Pro 4,1 (early 2008), OS 10.6.8, and Firefox 19.0 beta. Thanks for listening to my bitching.
    - cheers

  • How do I bookmark a pdf? How sort bookmarks in Firefox?

Since my browser is Firefox, not Safari, this may not be a question easily answered. But I need to bookmark a pdf file, and though the pulldown with correct info showed as usual, it did not appear on my Bookmarks list.
Also, many times I have followed the Firefox instructions for sorting bookmarks alphabetically, but I simply can't get that to work. Any suggestions?

This is a Pages forum and nothing to do with either Firefox or Safari, you will have to find an appropriate user group or Forum to answer your question.

  • Safari sorting?

Is it really true that Apple did not program a sorting (alphabetizing) capability into Safari for bookmarks? What were they thinking? Any help out there for version 1.3.2?

Bookdog will do this for you.
    Hope this helps,

  • How do I sort bookmarks in Mavericks?

Getting really frustrated with the new OS! Tried without success to use Safari sort which was mentioned in past discussions. In the old OS, I had "sort alphabetically" at the end of my Safari bookmarks list--it was so easy. For some crazy reason, Mavericks doesn't give us that option. Can someone give me a clear, step-by-step explanation of how to use Safari sort, or any other way to permanently add this feature to my bookmarks list?

Although I don't currently use it, the free third-party Safari enhancer Glims adds a 'sort alphabetically' function to each Bookmark menu: http://machangout.com/
There may be other options available to do what you're after, but I've used Glims in the past without issue.  If you don't like it there is an uninstaller on their website.

  • How to sort bookmarks alfabetically?

I hate sorting my bookmarks manually. (Safari 4.1.2)
A function for sorting bookmarks - haven´t found it. Does it even exist?

    Hi Sverker
    Does it even exist?
not built-in, click a button or set a preference, no...
but if you select all the bookmarks in a folder, drag them out to a Folder on the desktop you created (with sort by name enabled, which is the usual default) - you can drag them back in again, duly sorted alphabetically, trashing the un-sorted ones right after.

  • I upgrades my iPAD  3 to iOS6 and now I can't open my Safari RSS bookmarks.  Any ideas to help?

I upgrades my iPAD  3 to iOS6 and now I can't open my Safari RSS bookmarks.  Any ideas to help?

I've installed 3 different RSS readers and none of them "grab" the default flag for RSS feeds.
I've also uninstalled the Podcasts.app, then re-installed a couple of the readers and Safari still has no idea what to do with them.
What's most annoying is that Safari declares it doesn't know what to do with a feed and offers to load the iTunes Store so I can pick an RSS Reader to install, and then the iTunes app declares it can't connect to the store (even when I'm already on the store or downloading an application at the time).
And yeah, I've tried the fixes for the cannot connect errors (Date/Time flip, reinstall bought app, setting DNS to Google even though it was already fine, and clearing Safari's cache just in case).
    This is absolutely pathetic.

OOPS! Too quick on the trigger to ask that question without trying anything. Sorry. Solved it by touching the bookmark icon.

  • How can I sort Bookmarks by name A-Z in the bookmarks drop down menu?

I have tried organize by name but it doesnt give an apply option and doesnt take effect

Sorting Bookmarks in the Library window (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) is for temporary display. The Bookmarks are not permanently sorted.
To permanently sort, open the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B opens or closes the Bookmarks Sidebar ---- Cmd+B in OSX), right-click (Cmd+click in OSX) the "Bookmarks Menu" folder and choose "Sort by Name". See: <br />

  • The font in Safari's bookmarks bar and tabs bar has suddenly changed

The font in Safari's bookmarks bar and tabs bar has suddenly changed to a lighter font.  How do I change the font back?  I'm not speaking of the font size/type in the web browser in viewing web pages, but the font in the application itself has changed. It's rather annoying and would like to be able to change it back!  I'm running Safari v5.1.7

    OK, Margie, here's what to do . . .
    First Quit Safari.
Then Find your User's (Home) folder library.
It's hidden, but here's how you find the Home Library:
Click on the desktop to get the Finder menu.  Then go up to  "Go" in the menu bar, while holding down the option key.
You'll now see the User Library in the drop down list. Open it, then look for the Fonts folder.
Take the fonts folder to the desktop.
    Restart Safari.
    Any better?
(Warning:  This is only for the Users/Home > Library > Fonts folder.  Under no circumstances, should this be done with the SYSTEM > Library > Fonts folder.)

  • How can I sort bookmarks within a folder by date such that this is apllied not only in the library but also on the toolbar?

    Hello,
I have several folders on my firefox toolbar which I use to sort new bookmarks by topic. If I add a new bookmark to a folder it is alwas placed at the bottom (below existing bookmarks) which is somewhat annoying with a increasing number of bookmarks. I would like to have the bookmarks recently added at the top of the folder (above existing bookmarks).
It's no problem to sort them this way within the library. But back at the toolbar everthing remains the same. The only option that seems to work here ist 'sort by name'.
Is there any way to sort the bookmarks by 'date added' such that new bookmarks are placed on top and this is applied also outside the library?
I hope you get my problem!
    Thanks!

I do not think there is a way to do that without add-ons
There are a couple of workarounds I am aware of
    * Add the bookmarks manually in the bookmarks library and choose the position. That is using Show all bookmarks -> open required folder -> select a position and right click -> add new bookmark <br />Rather a slow and clumsy process
    * Sort a folder and copy it. If you sort the folder contents then copy and paste them they remain in that order when pasted.
There are add-ons but I have not tried them. For example
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/simplesort-bookmarks/
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/auto-sort-bookmarks/
There will be others available and take note of the advice to backup bookmarks manaully.

  • When I sort bookmarks in "organize bookmarks" they are not sorted under the bookmarks pulldown menu. Latest additions are not integrated into the sort

When I sort bookmarks in "Organize Bookmarks" they are not sorted under the pulldown menu on a regular page. Recently added bookmarks are not inegrated into to sorting.

  • Every so often when using safari my bookmarks disappear and then later the list shows up again.  Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Every once in awhile while using safari my bookmarks list disappears.  Later it just shows up again.  Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

I have had exactly the same problem now with two mini iPads.  Everything was tried; 1) restarting; 2) restoring factory settings etc.  NONE worked.  Eventually Apple agreed to replace it.  I have had the replacement now for two to three months and exactly the same thing is happening again. So off to Apple tomorrow to get another replacement.
I am quite a heavy user of the iPad so wonder if this is something to do with the fault.
It is so frustrating as sometimes reset works, and then after 10/20/30/40 minutes (you pick) it goes unstable again.

  • Export Safari 1 Bookmarks to Safari 2

Running OS 10.3.9 on my PowerBook with Safari v1. Need Bookmarks on my new Mac Intel 10.4.4 running Safari v2. Don't want to just clobber the .plist files for Safari in case they are not compatible. Tried Safari Bookmark Exporter, doesn't have a Safari Export option.
How do you get Safari v1 bookmarks into Safari v2?

    Kenneth,
For reference, I have Safari 1.3.2 on my Panther iMac and Safari 2.0.3 on my Tiger iMac.
Just to support Miriam's suggestion without using the term "export"...
Find the Bookmarks.plist file in ~Library/Safari Folder of your PowerBook, make a copy of it and use the Safari>File>Import Bookmarks feature of your new machine.
