Safari - sreamed media

I am trying to view live TV and listen to live radio in Safari. The media is in a foreign language. Safari does not play it. Sometimes I get a message asking for Windows Media Player.
Can Safari even play live media from the internet?
If not how can a Mac owner view live media, and in a foreign languages?
I use Safari version 1.3.1. Mac OS X 10.3.9.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'll ask the same message the Web page asked of you.
Do you have Windows Media Player for Mac installed?
How about Real Player?
Both use "plug-ins" (little helper applications) that allow Safari to play media content inside a Web page. Many sites use Real Media (.rm format) for audio and Windows Media Video (.wmv format).
Both players are "free".

  • Safari, Windows Media Player, and Proxy Servers

I'm trying to watch streaming video of comedy central's Daily Show but its not working. I hit play and I get "-19422" in the play bar. I can't find anything about this anywhere online. I used to be able to do play these videos on my old computer but have had no success. It has to be in Windows Media Player format. I have Windows Media Player and have streamed from other sites. The only thing I have found is that the comedy central page requires a proxy to view streamng video. I have contacted my ISP and they say no such proxy is needed and I should be able to view the page. Am I suppose to guess on the proxy server? The comedy central site says it supports safari and apple computers but it doesn't seem like it. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone have any ieas for solving this problem?
PS- This is what comedy central says.... Also my ISP is Time Warner Cable's RoadRunner
"If you are on a Mac, make sure your Player is set to only use the proxy, and disable TCP or UDP checking as this will cause timeouts.
If you choose the Use proxy option and do not know the proxy server name or port number you should use, contact your Internet service provider or network administrator. "

    Hi,
The videos work fine for me with Safari 2.0.2 and OS X 10.4.3. The section of the help file you quoted appears to be referring to a corporate firewall setup rather than a typical home setup - you shouldn't need to change any of the defaults for Windows Media Player.
A Google search for that error code you received mentions Flip4Mac in a couple of places - do you have that installed?
If so, try disabling it to see if that is the cause of your issues.

  • Safari/Windows Media Player problem.

I have a bit of a problem at the moment with viewing video content on some sites - when I click the link/button/whatever this message appears -
"Safari can't display content on this page
Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesn’t support. The application “Windows Media Player” may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?"
When I do try WMP, it opens ok, tries to play it, then gives me this message-
"The file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"

Do you also have Flip4Mac installed?
If not, Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows Media Player for OS X but Flip4Mac will continue to be supported which adds a plugin for Safari and other browsers that should work.

  • Could we get a new category? Plug-ins - Safari- Windows media - Flash

I posted this on the iMacs (early 2006) forum but it seems better placed here.
With the new Intel iMacs, it doesn't make sense to post over on the other threads (eg. Safari) when the issues are undoubtedly related to the new iMacs.
It would be great for us to keep each other up-to-date when plug-ins and a solution to Windows Media become available.

  • Safari & windows media player - help

new to mac and I feel like an idiot. trying to download windows media player and have followed all the steps on previous posts, but still having problems.
Downloaded stuffit, and then wmp 9 ( for mac). Everything downloads fine except that there is no windows media plug-in in the Internet plug in folder in Library. How do i get it in there? is it something really simple that I'm missing? Also, previous posts seem to indicate that you just can't watch CNN video from the link on their website?

Tania, after Windows Media Player installer downloads to your Desktop, double click the installer to begin the installation. After it installs, Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility. You'll have to set the preferences for the Player, but it is possible to watch the free videos on CNN.com.

  • Safari windows media player, cnn, mac OS X ( 10.4,3)

When i try to play an cnn media coverage i get this message" no windows media detected" i have the latest version. can anyone help me

Yes, that plugin chart is useful. There are a couple of esoteric plugins that could be added.
Some of the other plugins I have are DjVu, MrSID - both form LizardTech; PDF and Word Browser Plugins - both from Shubert|it (I don't have the Word plugin installed, but it is available) and the Macromedia Authorware Web Player. I have a couple others as well.
Another plugin that is not yet ready for prime-time (and not yet ready for Intel Macs at all), in my opinion, is Flip4Mac.

  • Safari's media capabilities

Does the iPod Touch web browser currently have the ability to play web-based video? For instance, if I go on FoxSports.com is it possible to play the highlight videos that site features? If I go on a site that features podcasts, or streaming audio, such as the internet feed from an out-of-market radio station, can Safari play the audio, or, if not, can it be augmented with an available plug-in to do so?

    Hello.
The Safari browser doesn't seem to support streaming but it will playing some basic audio and video files if they are straightforward links on Web pages. Types I've tried that work are MP3, AAC, AVC.
In particular audio and video podcasts seem to work fine from Web pages. If you can find the RSS feed for a podcast and click it, Safari will display the list of podcasts and you can select which to play from the list.
Sites that use Real or WMA or that use streaming (via Flash or RTSP) don't seem to be supported.

  • HT204291 Airplay video but no audio through Safari

I have a problem with Airplay not allowing audio from Safari based media. I am trying to steam an NFL game but the audio will not transfer from built in speakers to Airplay. I have noticed this is an issue on the discussion boards and have done all they suggest. Help!

    Hi,
Many vendors, if not all have not released drivers for Windows 8 officially therefore we have to wait. The following forum may help:

  • Listening to things besides Itunes wirelessly?

now that I have my Airtunes set up to play all my Itunes songs, I can not listen to any other websites through my speakers. No Youtube, CNN, band websites, Myspace pages, movies, etc., nothing though my speakers. Only my Itunes. The problem is that before my speaker cable went directly into my computer and now it goes straight into the Airport Express. Is there anyway to use my speakers though airport express now that I have it wired this way. If not, I would have to unplug the speaker cord everytime i want to surf the web and listen and watch things. Which would suck. Any sugggestions?

awesome. I knew there had to be away. It would be nice if it just output any sound from the computer so you do not have to tell it to play sound from Safari, Windows Media, Quicktime, etc. But this works great. And perhaps there is a way to let it take any sound once I figure it out. Thanks!

  • I messed up:  codec not supported

I am studying Itallan. I found my way to Italian TV and radio stations on the web and had them playing just fine in Safari. When I clicked on the <Link to Video> on the page in Safari, Windows Media Player launched and I could watch the video and listen to the audio just fine, or in the case of radio programs, just listen to the audio.
    Then I did something stupid.
I thought I'd try and download some freeware with which to record these programs and move them to my iPod for use in the car.
I tried a couple of freeware apps, none seemed to work well, so I trashed them.
When I went back to the Italian web page, clinked on <Link to video>, the video launched and there was no audio. Just as the Windows Media Player opened the file, it warned: This file may not play correctly because it was compressed by using a codec that is not supported.
I then tried to open some humorous .wmv files I had saved months ago to my HD. When I launched them, same thing. Video plays but no audio. I tried some of my saved .mpg files. Same thing. Video's fine; no audio.
When I click on the Italian radio stations in Safari, they stations will not play and the Status Bar notes: One error opening the page: choose Activity from Window menu. Activity noted, inter alia, in red: Plug-in cancelled.
Checked my Audio preferences, all is fine and I have my system beep, tunes play in iTunes, etc.
I backed up before I began playing around so whichever file or plug-in went AWOL, I should be able to get it from my backup.
When I logged out then into a new user account and tried to go to the Italian sites, exact same thing happened. Video, but no audio.
Help...I need to get this working so I can get on with my Italian studies.
Many thanks for saving me from my own stupidity.
    bob

    I solved my own problem.
I remembered that a few months back I had a similar problem, this time not associated with the installation of any new software. I was directed to an Apple Knowledgebase article on what to do when this happens.
The solution, then and this time around, was to go to Audio MIDI Setup in the Utilities folder and check the Audio Output Source settings.
Both times, mine had been reset from 44100.0Hz to something much higher.
When I reset it to 44100, all was well again.
    Thanks for replying, nonetheless...bob

  • Since update to later version of Lion, some applications don't work?

Since I updated to a later version of Lion, the following things have stopped working:
    -Safari
    -VLC Media Player
-Java based things (chatrooms don't work for example)
I did a combo update that someone suggested and this did nothing.
    Here are my specs:
    Macbook Pro
    Mac OS X Version 10.7.4 (11E53)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
I have tried removing VLC and reinstalling but no luck.
Please help? I am tempted to just wipe my Macbook clean and start again but that will take forever to get back and my internet is awful.
    I hope you can help!

    Facetime doesn't go fullscreen...
As has been mentioned you must be connected to a FaceTime session to be able to enter Full Screen.
... there is no iPhoto option in Address Book...
I'm not entirely sure what you mean but if you are looking for this:
You can find it by double-clicking the photo area in an AB contact. Mine says Aperture because that is my default photo manager.
... the Social Profile and birthday options show in preferences but are aren't working so well...
I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Can you be more specific?
...I just can't see or use the Versions browser...
For the moment only a few applications support Autosave + Versions. They are mainly Pages, Numbers, Keynote and TextEdit. So depending on what application you are using you may not have that feature available yet. But you can enter the Version UI a couple of ways:
    1. Pull down the window name and choose "browse all versions;"
    2. Or, pull down File > Revert to Saved.

  • IMessage won't reactivate after resetting phone

Ok, so my phone and I had a bit of an adventure today. I left it at a restaurant by mistake and located it with Find My iPhone, and remotely erased the device (could've just locked it, but I was extremely anxious about the fate of my phone at the time). Once I got it back, I restored it with a backup, everything went normally, etc etc.
Except that now, iMessage & FaceTime are stuck on "Waiting for activation..." and when I tap the "Use your Apple ID for iMessage option" and enter my Apple ID/password, I get an error saying that my phone couldn't connect and to check network settings and try again. For clarification: I had to enter my ID info about a half-dozen times in the restoring process, and to log in to this website, so I know the password is correct. I have full wifi & 3G reception (have tried logging in on both), and email, Safari, social media apps - everything else I can think of - is working perfectly fine. This is driving me nuts. I tried restoring the phone one more time, turning airplane mode on/off, everything Google could offer me as a solution, and I've still got nothing. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I don't feel Apple really deserves $29.99 to help me fix a problem that I'm pretty sure isn't my fault.
Oh: And my software is up to date.

Here I am to save the day mf1831! Let's get your iMessage working. May I ask are you logged into your iPhone 5s with your Apple ID? If not then simply go to Settings > iTunes & App Store. Also, go to iCloud in Settings to ensure that you are logged in there as well. Once you are logged in go to Messages and verify that iMessage is turned on. Also, please verify the Send & Receive info under Messages to ensure that both your mobile number and Apple ID is checked under "You Can Be Reached By iMessage At". Please let us know the results after you have peformed these steps.
    Thank you…

  • Kernel panic and other issues. (Also posted elswhere.)

Hi, I have problems with my brother in law's PB G4.
First: when starting up usually a kernel panic screen appears (grey/black screen with a bunch of jibberish, most times restarting takes care of that. It will then boot up completely. This brings up the second problem: After finally being booted any program that he tries to run "unexpectedly quits-would you like to submit a report?" This happens with all programs from Safari to Media Player to Quicktime to GarageBand...etc. He is running 10.3.9 but I am unsure of any other specs since I can't get to the system info. and he doesn't recall them. A third problem is that the Finder is in the dock but will not open when clicked on (would probably quit as well) so can't get at anything that way either.
Does this sound like a ram issue or motherboard or anything else to anyone?
Thank you for any and all help.

    Hello, Gmakc4,
i just posted this here in another thread, it might be useful in your case, too (except the battery issue):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=771979&tstart=0
    then, in addition:
it could be bad memory even if the hardwarecheck doesn't spot it; it could be a bad section on the HD.
    what i would do:
1st: try to back up if that is not yet done.
    2. can you start in "single user mode"? can you start from the Install-CD?
    if not, then:
    3. try a reinstall of the software; you can try an "Archive and Install", which leaves everything else, and just replaces the system, or you can try the "Erase and Install" which cleans up the disk.
hope this helps; please report back.
and -- i wouldn't give up too fast, a new powerbook is still about 1200 Euros...

  • Windows Media Player plug-in issues - Safari 4.0.5 on Windows 7

    Hi guys,
I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 and of course the page to chose a browser popped up. Glad to see my beloved Safari browser to be available I installed it. Of course not all was running smoothly but after the 'mandatory' flash, Windows Media Player and QuickTime plug in I assumed all media content should run perfect in Safari.
Unfortunately not for WMV files. I get the 'Safari can't find the internetplugin, MIME-type application/x-mplayer2'error message.
I looked the issue up on the web of course and found out the trouble that Safari had with WMV streaming. What struck me is that this is a Mac only problem I believe (Flip4Mac solution). As I am running Windows 7 I was quite sure that Safari should be able to stream and play WMV files in the browser.
So I removed and installed the Windows Media Player plug-in again (http://www.apple.com/safari/download/plugins.html) but to no avail. I then removed Safari and installed it again, still same problem. I tried the Fire-Fox plug in, no solution.
It really drives me nuts to open IE8 only to play some WMV files in the browser. I hope someone can shed some light on this issue.
Strange thing I noticed: I can't see how I can manage my plug-ins. There seems to be no tab for it in the Safari settings and in the program-files folder I can only find Java.
Thank you so much for your time and effort.

I looked up the internet but can't find anything on this. As no replies here too I guess I'm the only one. The other thing that struck me is the enormous CPU usage when playing flash in the browser. Up to 95%-100% cpu usage when playing HD flash content. First I assumed it was a Flash issue but Internet Explorer never used more then 35%-55%. I then assumed it was just Flash in Safari. Strange thing is, if I maximize the window the cpu load actually drops to 55%. I only get high cpu usage when flash is played in the Safari window. I guess that means it's something to do with the browser and not an isolated flash 'bug'.
Also still no luck playing WMV in the browser itself. Maybe time to look for yet another browser. A shame as I like the Safari browser a lot. MobileMe and iPhone are great to sync bookmarks and the look and feel is great. The engine is not so good unfortunately.

  • How do I force Safari to use Windows Media Player as my default WMV player.

I am subscribed to a educational program called "the Epson Online Experience", and the entire program is in Windows Media Player videos. I was using Safari and Mac OS 10.3.9 with no problem what so ever, until Quick Time updated itself. Now I can't get WMP to play at all in Safari, or in Camino or IE either. The browsers just keep trying to play the link in Quick Time.
I did download Flip4Mac, but with no luck. The links now appear to open, appear to be downloading the buffer, but will stay on that screen for hours if I allow it.
Does anyone know how to make Windows Media Player the default media player in Safari? or for that matter, in Camino (or if I MUST, I guess I would be willing to try it in IE too if I could make it work.
    Thanks for the help!
    Jodan

Welcome to Apple Discussions. Your post seems to have been lost in a sea of Safari problems.
Usually items triggering media players create a file, which is downloaded into your system. Check your download folder for the file. If you can't find it, access the same file again via Safari.
Once you locate the file on your HD, click on it. Then, command key + I will bring up the info panel for the file (or simply select "more info" in the preview panel if you're in the finder's column mode). Go to the bottom where you'll see "open with". There, you see "quicktime" listed as the app. for opening the file. Click on the drop down menu and find the Windows player and select it.
Back to the info. panel - select "change all". This will revert all files of this type on your HD, plus future files to the Windows Media Player. Double click on the file to activate the video. Future selections in Safari will automatically open the correct media player. One other note, for the player to open automatically, you must check "open safe files after downloading" in your Safari Preferences>General panel.
    Post back with results.
