Safari started lagging really bad

I have a 2013 Macbook Air with Mountain Lion and while it had been running flawlessly since the day I bought it, a few days ago it started lagging really, REALLY bad. I've been able to narrow down the problem and now I'm 99% positive Safari is the culprit here. Whenever I open a new tab (even with some light, text-mostly content) the "Web Content (Safari)" process starts to devour the memory like crazy, sometimes going above 100% and almost never going below 60%. Sometimes it goes down after a while but sometimes I have to close the tab completely to make it come back to normal. The pages with videos are even worse in that aspect, the whole system starts lagging as if I had a 8-year old machine on Vista.
I searched through the forums and found that for some, links misplaced in the reading list were the culprit but I don't see anything out of the ordinary videos and articles there. What else may I try?

Hello Tigro!
Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities!
It may be beneficial to reset certain componenets of Safari.

My iPod is lagging really bad, it takes about 15 seconds to load a song and sometimes just totaly freezes up. It was working fine yesterday but just all of a sudden today it started freezing up. I tried to restore it but now today my computer doesn't see it in iTunes. I went through all of the steps apple recomends but it didn't help.

  • Photoshop is lagging really badly in my 13in Macbook Pro.

Photoshop is lagging really badly in my 13in Macbook Pro. Simple operations like selecting a tool, or just any click take up to 5min to complete. I looked in the force quit menu and it tells me that the program is not responding. I tried re-starting my laptop, even uninstalling the program. When I installed it again the problem got worse as when it loads the rainbow wheel shows up, not letting me do anything. Currently I'm on the trial version. Maybe the problem will fix itself if I buy a plan?

Not really. You have to look at things.

Be sure you are updated to 2014.2.2

  • I have a 2011 MBP, i7 13 inch.  My MBP has been lagging really badly and eating up bandwidth.  When I go to Activity Monitor, two things seem to be going off - syslogd and mtmd.  Their CPU percentage is really high.

Even typing this, the computer will lag and the fans are really loud.
When my partner is playing xbox, he lags really badly and when I turn off my computer, it stops.
Does anyone know what might be wrong with it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi...
How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • What should i do if it lags really bad with no apps opened up?

So i was just having a ordinary day at a ordinary time. Usually it wont lag much, only lags when i play games and stuff. But that day. I came home. Opend up my mac. And there i was gonna edit my vids in movie11 when i cant click or anything. It just has the pringy spinny rainbow thingy. So i was liek thats wierd. So i closed it. Then i try to open up youtube. I cant. It just lags too much. I repair my disk. I thought it would fix it. No dice. The lag is there. And i realised there is something that is clogging up my RAM. So i checked Activity Monitor. Nothin. There is nothing unusual. I dont know what to do. If this post dosent work. Ill just have to go to the Apple Store.

Have you tried creating a new login ID that has no login items associated with it, to see if any login programs are causing severe system lags? You would do that through System Preferences.
How much free disk space do you have? You want 10% to 15%, or more, of it free for systems usage.

  • Video Call Quality drops / starts out really bad

Quality of video calling is sub-standard, I live in the UK and use Skype everyday to call a friend in the Philippines and our calls constantly drop out, and at times won't even connect. When connected video quality frequently is pixelated and at times freezes before dropping calls, on average I would say that I get about 10-12 call drop-outs per day and it's not acceptable. Both me and my friend's wi-fi signal are strong, yet everytime a call drops we get a message saying internet signal too weak, it's not the internet as Viber works perfectly well between us and our wi-fi signals are at maximum strength, it's Skype's signal too weak and no matter how many times I've left feedback complaining about this (at least 100 complaints over 10 months), nothing is done to ensure that me and my friend can have a conversation without call drop outs and pixelated and frozen screens. I'm sure that I'm not the only person in the world trying to have a video call with someone on the other side of the world, and also sure that I'm not the only person suffering from this sub-standard service, so it's time you did something to improve the quality of your service and make it possible for me to be able to talk to my friend. You advertise free worldwide Skype-to-Skype video calls, but don't provide the service because of sub-standard signal from Skype, I call that false advertising, so address this issue as it is becoming a real problem for me and my friend.

I have Skype video calls with my friend nearly 6,000 miles away in South Korea.  I have video conversations all the time.  My last video call a few days ago was 5 hours long with no issues.  You can't compare to different services equally since they operate differently.  If you are getting drop-outs then there is something limiting it and can be hardware or software based.  Skype functions best when multiple connections can be handled by your wired or wireless router simultaneously and UDP is not impeded.  If your equipments gets overloaded or is blocking traffic then the quality of your call or Internet connection stability can deprecate to the point where your call gets dropped.
To try to narrow the problem down:
    1.  You should try wired instead of wireless.
    2.  If you can bypass the routers used and connect directly, try that as well.
    3.  If the routers being used have any firmware upgrades, be sure to upgrade to the latest.
    4.  Try with uPnP enabled/disabled in your routers or in Skype to see if that helps.
Usually routers that claim to work well with T0rrents work best with Skype because their firmware handles uPnP and multiple connections without crashing, halting. or failing in some manner.
My friend in South Korea has moved several times in the past few years.  Many times I've had to remote into his system to repair the conditions of the Internet connection in the location he was staying.  At one point there was a community router being used on the floor he was staying on that was problematic.  I remoted into the unprotected Korean router and updated the firmware that was known to have uPnP issues.  After the firmware update the dropouts we were experiencing once ever 5-20 minutes disappeared and the connection was rock solid and continued to work flawlessly for the 6 months he stayed there.

  • My Touch 4G has been lagging really bad

Ever since I updated to IOS 5,
I have about 15 gig of songs on it, it's a 32 gig model, so I don't understand why it's so slow...
I have tried wiping it and re-installing all the software on it, I have rebooted it multiple times and I can't seem to fix the problem
    Does anyone have some suggestions?

Did you try to reset the device by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting.
If this does not work, set it up as new device, explained here:
How to back up your data and set up as a new device

  • Photoshop CC really bad lagging on new rMBP

I resently bought a new Retina MacBook Pro 13" with a nice fast 2,8 i7 proccesor and a big chunk of 16 Gb ram. After using it on my older iMac I was exited to use it on my new MacBook. But its lagging really bad. It makes it unusable for me. I don't work with large files and we mostly use it for small UI design. I use a Bamboo Wacom and use OpenGL is on. when turned of its a lot faster but this results in masive graphic bugs.
Anyone know how to fix this? Because I'm really thinking of switching to Sketch 3 (http://bohemiancoding.com/sketch)

Well, something is up with your system to make it slow.
Do you have any third party plugins? Have you tried disabling them?
Do you have any utilities that would interfere with other applications (antivirus, firewall, etc.)?
And the "graphics bugs" mean that you have a driver problem which will have to be addressed by Apple.

  • Anyone else getting really bad lag since Jelly Bean update?

Verizon forced a Jelly Bean update to my SG3 about a month ago. Since then my phone has been lagging really bad. Takes about 7 to 8 seconds see what I typed when texting, it takes a long time to open up the contacts, or a web page or even sometimes just flipping through the screens it will lag. Has anyone else had any issues like this? Anyone know how to fix it? Getting a new phone is not an option, sending it out to be fixed is not an option. I have no choice but to keep the phone I have or <Comment deleted per the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service.>.

It sounds to me as if you are having some application conflicts. It may be worth it to try a factory reset, without backing up your application settings, and down/install your apps again.

  • Screen flickering really bad after unplugging external monitor

    Hello,
Since I updated my Macbook Pro 13' Retina (inch, Early 2013) to Mavericks, almost averytime I unplug my external monitor or TV, the screen starts flickering really bad. This is the screenshot of the issue. Sometimes you can see all the apps opens, but the "flicker" effect takes over the screen, making it impossible to user the computer. The only way I found to use the compuer again is restarting it. It's really weird.

    Howdy inireugg,
We've an article that provides a host of helpful information and tips for resolving issues with displays.
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the systemYou can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

  • My MacBook Air just started running really slow

I have a MacBook Air and Safari started running really slow and I'm not sure why.  I'm not very tech savy, so I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
Select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
    Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • My Mac has started lagging badly whenever I use Flash.

I've got a 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro 7,1 with 4 GB of memory running OS X 10.6.8 and recently it has started lagging severely whenever I open a flash video or game.  I use to never have any problems playing games on my computer or streaming any video, even up to 1080p.
Then, recently, it started lagging whenever I used flash, and it's bad enough that my cursor begins jumping, scrolling is basically impossible, the video only shows a frame every few seconds and it **** near crashes my entire computer.  During these times the % CPU for flash in activity monitor will jump up to over 100.
This issue has really started to bug me and I've tried everything I can to fix it.  I've downgraded to older versions of flash, uninstalled and reinstalled Google Chrome, done all of the system updates for my computer, but nothing works.  I just wanted to know if there's any way I could fix this to have my computer back in working condition.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem, and it's driving me crazy! I have the same macbook as chrispy17, except with Lion. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive (the drive itself, not the volume icons below it.) Is the SMART status "Verified?" If not, replace the drive immediately. If the status is "Verified," the drive may still be failing. Back up all data, if you haven't already done so. Reinstall Mac OS X, then run Software Update. Test with all wired peripherals disconnected. If it's still slow, you have a hardware problem.
