Safari tip

May already know this. To search within a safari page simply use the google search box in upper right. This will return google results but will also mention results for search within current page. Scroll to bottom of results and click. Will take u to each found search term and will be highlighted in yellow.

Another tip: sound settings.
When turning off mail sounds it'll also turn off you text sounds.  This is for people who want to turn off text sounds.  Keep in mind it also turns off the mail sounds.  I haven't tested though if you'd get a sound when you get the initial popup on a received text, but when you send or receive will in the app you get no sound at all.

  • Safari Tips

I've been using Safari for a few days now and have found some helpful hints to make Safari better.
Some of these might of already been posted but I thought I'd slowly add them all in one post and make it easier for everyone.
Most modifications can be done within the Preferences.plist file located at:
    XP: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\
    Vista: USERNAME\AppData\Roamin\Apple Computer\Safari
Add any of the keys in italics below before </dict> which is at the end of the Preferences.plist file
    Get Debug menu within Safari
    <key>IncludeDebugMenu</key>
    <true/>
    Make Safari load pages faster
    <key>WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay</key>
    <real>0.25</real>
    Always show Tab bar
    <key>AlwaysShowTabBar</key>
    <true/>

Am I supposed to be able to open these files ending in .plist? I can't and it says it doesn't recognize those file types.
    Thanks, Liski!!!
For Steve...I have tried those others and have problems with those and my mail as well. So, thanks for the tip.

    Hello All

    Hi,
GlimmerBlocker works wonders for pop up and under ads. It's free and easy to use. Compatible with Snow Leopard and Safari 5. You can access the software after installation from your System Preferences pane.

  • IPad 3 & trouble with safari

All of a sudden when I start typing in a web address in safari, after "www." The 1st letter will get stuck for a while, along with every letter after that. It's not the key because I can type in the search box just fine and everywhere else also. I've done all the usual master reset etc...trying to avoid a "restore". Please help

How about this for irony .... As I was typing my response to you, Safari crashed on me for the 5th time today! Yes the issues has been reported many times on this discussion site.
These are the basic recommended fixes. Start with the reset Safari tip - the last one listed. Good luck!
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by e tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Since I've updated to iOS5, my first-gen iPad has trouble with Safari. It crashes frequently, while I'm on many different sites. Any ideas?  Thanks.

I recently updated my re-manufactured first-gen iPad to iOS 5.0.1, and it's having trouble running safari. It crashes many times while I'm using Safari. . This didn't happen until I updated to iOS 5 and 5.0.1. Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks!

  • I can't right click with the new lion update. how can I fix it?

Before the Lion update I was able to right click and now I cant. It doesnt even give me the visual example when you get into the track pad set up page. just the 1 finger and the 3 finger opts. AND everytime i got to set up the two finger tap for right click, once i get out o that pane it doesnt work and whe i go back to the set up pane it is unclicked. Help!

Create a new user and log in as that user, and see if Safari works over there.  If it does, then it's probably something in your local login environment related to Safari.  If the other user also has trouble with Safari, then there's a more general problem with Safari.
Also check the console (Applications > Utilities > Console.app) when Safari tips over, and see if there's anything relevant logged there.

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • Love Safari's new look, but on my 17-inch MacBook Pro the font on most pages is partly or all in an insipid light blue. I've tried changing all text to black on white to help my 83-year-old eyes, but no luck so far. Any tips?

This is my first time using this site, but it's helpful so far. Not sure if I need to retype the wording in the Discussion box above, but will do so just in case.

The simplest thing to try is a reset.
With Safari running, click on Safari in the menu bar and select Reset Safari ....
If that does not work, go to Safari / Preferences / Advanced.

  • Strange "tool tip:" message when reading blogs in Safari

Today, I was reading a blog in Safari (latest version) in SnoLo (latest version). Something caught my eye. I looked at the lower part of the screen and noticed that the idle cursor that was positioned over a word in the blog had turned into a pointer hand, but there wasn't a hyperlink in the word. I just shrugged it off until I noticed it flick again and the hand had turned into a message, like a tool tio in most applications. The tip said "Discover what top martial artists & the Army don't want you to know"! Whaaaaa?
I scrolled down the blog and waited. After a minute or so, the pointer changed to a hand and 30+ seconds later, displayed the same message. I took a screen snap, and was able to get it before the tool tip faded.
    http://www.michaelbradydesign.com/Transfer/AppleForum/Strange_tooltip.png
I switched to another blog and was able to replicate it. This time the message said "Sign up for the #1 voted stock newsletter for free today."
There was no such commercial message on either blog page, nor was the window sitting on top of another window with a web page with such an advertiser.
What in the world is going on? Has anyone seen a similar thing?
For the record, yesterday, I updated iTunes and a Java update.
    TIA and all that.

    Hi MIchael,
You can disable tooltips using the Terminal app /Applications/Utilities.

    Hello jo90733,
I would recommend reinstalling Mountain Lion to replace the missing/damaged components of these applications. While the process shouldn't affect any data (images, music, etc) you have on the system, it's always a good idea to have a backup in place prior to reinstalling.
OS X Mountain Lion: Back up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11371
OS X Mountain Lion: Reinstall OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10763
Important: You need to be connected to the Internet to reinstall OS X.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
If you’re not connected to the Internet, choose a network from the Wi-Fi menu (in the top-right corner of the screen).
Select Reinstall OS X, and then click Continue.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk (in most cases, it is the only one available).
To start the installation, click Install.
    Cheers,
    Allen

  • Parental support browsers vs safari, does anyone have any tips?

I am looking at installing an app that will put in place some parental controls for my children, but the ones I have looked at all suggest disabling safari and using their browser.  I'm a bit wary of this, anyone got any experience, tips, things to avoid?

I'm not sure why using a different browser and disabling Safari would make you "wary". If you want more parental controls for browsing, it's the best way. Should you want to use Safari, it takes 10 seconds to disable Restrictions. The McGruff browser gets recommended quite a bit.

  • When I open an ap or a safari page the screen tips upside down.  The screen doesn't automatically move to fit the direction the ipad is sitting

I have an I-pad retina.  Starting yesterday I noticed when playing a podcast video I could only view it with the screen in rectangular mode instead of the horizontal.  Starting today when I open an app or a page in Safari the screen tips upside down.  In other words, it doesn't follow the direction in which I'm looking at the screen, I'm constantly having to make the adjustment myself.  How can this be fixed?

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Safari 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5 advice and tips needed

I'm new at all this so here I go...
After looking through the "discussions" it seems there's alot of problems to expect upgrading from Safari to Leopard and beyond.
What steps can I take to prevent or limit all those problems associated with the upgrade(s)??? what, where, how,
It appears that DU repairs and redownloading an update because of a corrupted file makes the biggest difference. What is the blue screen everyone talks about? can I prevent that first try upgrading?
So what if the installs goods error free...do I make the leap and update straight to 10.5.4?
Early 2006 model 20" Intel Core Duo iMac 2G Ram, 500G harddrive, x1600ATI.
Safari 10.4.11 or whatever the latest update is/was.
Upgrading to Leopard 10.5.1 or mb427a version i believe...

If you do things right you should not have problems. Those who do are simply not doing things right. Millions of users update without any problems or comment. A few hundred have problems and they all post about them here.
    1. Repair your hard drive and permissions (use Disk Utility after booting from your OS X installer disc.)
    2. Clone your startup volume to an external Firewire drive (use the Restore option of Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper!)
    3. Boot your computer with the clone from the external drive to be sure it works.
    4. Update the clone on the external drive using Software Update or downloading the standalone updater(s) directly from Apple's Download Site.
    5. Restart from the updated clone and use it for a while to be sure everything is normal.
    6. Update the normal startup volume.
    Key operations:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
This may also be done using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.

  • What's up with the new Safari? I've done all the "tips". Still slow!

I've tried all these prophylactic measures and read an hour's worth of articles about the new Safari (Version 5.0, 5533.16 apparently). But it gets stuck on even the most basic of Internet pages.
Safari used to load eBay, Associated Content, TED, YouTube, Craigslist, StumbleUpon, etc. in mere SECONDS. Now all I see is a loading bar that gets stuck about 1/16 (just past the www....) in the loading process.
Yeah, I've cleared the cookies and cache and all the whatnots. I'm not a computer genius but I can tell something is going on. Is Apple keeping a secret record of everything I do or what? Seriously, this is frustrating!
    To summarize:
I used to pop open Safari and get my homepage, www.google.com, in less than one second. Now I get a blank page that gets stuck, takes about thirty seconds, and then finally finds its way.
What can I REALLY do to make my new Safari work like it used to?
Or, how can I get the old version of Safari back?
And I've tried Firefox and other browsers, but they're messy and not as clean as my ol' Safari used to be. What's happening here?
I'm not impatient, I just can tell that something wrong is going on. And I'd like to fix it.

    Hi there!
Thanks for heads up. My Macbook says I'm running 10.5.8 right now.
    The steps I've taken:
I deleted the weird web icons document (I think it was a .dlb or .lb or something in the Library folder for Safrari in my hardrive) which didn't seem to do much, and I've went to my Safari preferences and deleted all ma' cookies, changes my cookie preferences to "only accept from sites I visit" and I've done the "delete cache" option from the Safari menu as well as the "reset Safari" option (which I regularly do anyway 'cause it seems to keep things moving quickly). I've also restarted my computer a couple of times, usually after completing one of these suggestions.
I'm using my computer from home on a wireless router thing from Netgear with super-high-speed way-too-expensive broadband Internet from our local provider, Charter. It's called a Negear Wireless Rangemax Router. I've never had a problem with it before, and 3-4 people use the Internet here at my home, often simultaneously, without difficulty.
I'm gonna' try pluggin' in the ethernet cable now. Thanks! I appreciate it!
--- I will say, after climbing up on a wobbly chair and plugging my laptop into the cable directly, that it worked a bit faster, but it still got "stuck" (which is what I'm now officially calling this phenomenon). For example, Google loaded in about five seconds instead of ten, and Safari generally responded better to random clicking around on links, but this page got "stuck" at "http://disc..." for quite a while (well, longer than your average modern day computer, I'd say; it still felt like I was on my old Powerbook) and then diddled around a while, until I refreshed the page and it loaded almost instantly.
I noticed, too, that the biggest problem it seems to have is loading new web pages that I don't visit frequently. For example, I'll search "Leo Tolstoy" on Google, click on the Wikipedia page, and it just stops! The blue loading bar gets to about "http://en.wiki..." and then it just plain stops. Just a few days ago, it would breeze along with super fast speed.
Thanks again. I appreciate your feedback!
Something fishy is going on, for sure.
