Safari toolbar in Mavericks, icons washed-out/faint?

Since upgrading to Mavericks on Tuesday,  the icons in the Safari toolbar are so faint that it is difficult to tell which are active and which are not. Anyone else notice this? And, more importantly, is there a fix?
Thanks.

  • Safari toolbar and menus grayed-out

The Safari toolbar and pul down menu selections stop working from time to time and I have to log out and log back in to get them working again. How can I fix this without having to log out and log back in?

    Hi!
    Please follow these steps
The issue should get resolve after first 3 steps, last 2 steps are for extreme conditions.
    1) on Mac: Safari - View - Un check "hide tool bars"
    2) From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
    3) From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    4) Force quit safari (Click on apple icon - force quit - select safari - click force quit - confirm).
    5)  Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
    Repeat Step 1.

  • Apple Mail and Safari Toolbar (deleting icons)

How come I cannot delete options (icons) from my Apple Mail toolbar or Safari toolbar? It states in the Mac Help area that you are supposed to drag the icons you want to delete and they will disappear. That isn't the case. The icons seem to be locked. I can add icons to the toolbar but I cannot delete them.

Minor correction...you actually need to control+click on the toolbar to reveal the contextual menu. Option+click will do nothing.
You can also just click on "View" in the menu bar and "Customize Toolbar". Once the customize toolbar sheet appears, you can drag icons into and out of the toolbar.

  • Safari 4 Color and Gamma STILL Washes Out -- NOT Solved 7/4/2009

OK, just bringing this back to the top:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2032159&start=0&tstart=0 is listed as 'Solved', but that was totally premature. The alleged fixes range from the usual repair permissions, trash Safari prefs, reboot, etc., but it's all temporary, at best.
A CLEAN install of the OS to a virgin partition, followed by permissions, repair, combo updater, apply all related Safari, repair permissions, delete, shutdown and reboot leaves you with the same issue as soon as you sleep displays, go to screen saver, use FUS, and come back in with Safari 4 already running, you will get the screen wash as further described here:
    http://gallery.me.com/frederico/100070
    Posted Elsewhere:
Gamma settings within Safari 4 windows since upgrade will "degrade" (read: darken and stratify) when scrolling the window contents, using either scroll wheel, arrow keys, or mouse on scroll bar. Text also becomes progressively fuzzy and its opacity decreases until the entire window is black.
Moving another application window in front, or minimizing and maximizing the errant window, moving or resizing it in any manner, or using the 'Force Repaint' command will restore the appearance immediately. I can capture screenshots of it, but cannot use your included screenshot command, as the mere act of dropping down the report slider forces repaint.
Quitting Safari, rebooting machine, or just logging out will "cure" the problem for a short time, but it returns fairly quickly. I do not believe I have any third party plugins causing the issue; I removed several and the problem still crept back; each user account, including a freshly created test account sees this error.
This can fairly regularly be triggered by sleeping the displays or entering locked screensaver, logging in, and going to several sites such as Daring Fireball, Mac OS X Hints, and anything displaying PNG and Flash combos.
Perhaps related: I updated to 10.5.7 at the same time, and when I restarted, noticed that the gamma profile on my center screen (of five LCDs) was severely washed out. Switching back and forth between any other color profile in Displays and back to my calibrated profile will cure the wash -- until I log out and back in. Each user account, including a freshly created test account sees this error.
Have also clean installed OS X 10.5.4 and updated to a10.5.7 using combo updater; then installed and updated Safari 4. Problem follows Main screen (menubar host) on each of five LCD displays on three ATi video cards on Mac Pro Quad 2008.
Getting ready to restore back to Safari 3 and 10.5.6 from clone; this behavior is becoming tedious.
Screenshots and additional details on request; <Edited by Host>

Now THAT is interesting. I typically do not have two Safari windows open and active on the same screen; I usually have three or more Safari windows open, but each is on its own screen, using tabs within each.
I think it's fascinating to see that the content is only affected in one window on the same page.
Can you elaborate as to your trigger? Is it FUS? Screensaver? Other?
The suggestion in either this thread or the other to switch the window momentarily to another screen to clear the problem until the next FUS or screensaver event is my current favorite fix. I have hotkeys assigned to move a window from one screen to another, anyway, so when I return to a user session from login to see Safari schizing out, a quick screen-swap toggle clears the issues until I allow a screensaver (but not always) or engage FUS (always) and see the issue return.
Do you have multiple screens? Can you reliably resolve the issue by swapping and returning, rather than being forced to quit Safari?
One thing to note about the screen swap, is that when this issue is occurring, there is a tremendous lag (a solid second or so) before the window is actually moved to the other screen, and a comparable lag when returning. IOW, there is an observable and HUGE processor spike as well as a memory-use spike (seen in Activity Monitor, top, and iStat Menus) as it deals with moving the visual display (be it plain text or graphic or video content) when this bug is active, but the same action two seconds later, or the same action in any other program, nets near-instant screen movement in response to the global hotkey action.
So, whatever it is that is borked between Safari and Core Video is not just an interpretation/ColorSync/disply error; it seems also to be leaking memory and having runaway processor cycles, as well.
There are times when Safari, with less than ten or twenty tabs open starts eating pretty close to 2GB of RAM, and will dominate a single processor to near 100%, *without* any windows actually containing very much in the way of images, and certainly no Flash or even QT.
I know this sounds a bit arrogant and spoiled, but thank God I have 8 cores and 8GB of RAM; I cannot imagine how this bug might feel on a single core machine with less than 2GB of RAM.

  • Thunderbolt Display has issue with weird washed-out colors after waking from sleep (after upgrade to Mavericks)

I've got a Thunderbolt Display that I use with my Macbook Air (mid 2012) - usually in clamshell mode.
When I let the computer go to sleep, and then wake it up by clicking the mouse, the monitor turns back on but the colors are washed out and purple looking.
The display goes back to normal when I unplug and replug it to my laptop.
I first noticed this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.
I made a video demonstrating the issue here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19179-MVpWA&feature=youtu.be
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Will

Same thing for me too.  Late 2012 13" MBP Retina.  I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable and plug it back in.
This has only started for me in the last two days.  The first two weeks of Mavericks was ok.
Update:  I just got back from a trip.  I was using the laptop separate from the Thunderbolt display.  I hadn't restarted since I returned and connected the monitor.  I've just rebooted, and put the computer to sleep.  After resuming from sleep, the display is ok.  Maybe try rebooting?  I'll update if it continues.

  • Colour washed out in .Mac web gallery viewed in Camino, but OK in Safari

The colour of images exported to .Mac web gallery viewed under Camino is washed out, but it is OK in Safari.
As Camino is my main browser, I hope that this can be fixed.
Does anyone come across this problem, and got a solution?

    Charles
This can be fixed, but it's a fix for the makers of Camino, not iPhoto. The reason is that Safari is one of the very few Web Browsers that respects the Color Profiles embedded in the images. Camino doesn't. It should.

  • Quicktime movie washed out in Safari

I'm having a problem with my quicktime movie published in Safari. The movie looks good on Firefox but washed out on Safari. I cant seem to find a way to stop this from happening. I copied the movie from the Safari version on the web to see if it was Safari and played it out on the desktop and its washed out. The original was HD and very clean. I converted with H.264 in compressor and the final movie looked great. Sure would like it to look as good as the H.264 on my desktop. Any suggestions would be great.

No, this isn't a rookie thing. I believe the problem lies within the new quicktime update, the last one did the same thing. However, this is a frustrating problem, but my suggestion is to wait a few days, and see if apple picks up on the problem and releases a fix.
DON'T UNINSTALL QUICKTIME USING PACIFIST!!! I tried that and had to reinstall my operating system. I don't know why, but it is not advisable.

  • Washed out icons for snow leopard

I have isnstalled Snow leopard and I have noticed that dock's icons seems washed out (no brilliant at all) ... adobe or apple's software seems work properly with my color profile.
It seems that icons are showed at gamma 1.8 and not at new 2.2 ...:-(
Has anyone a solution for this ugly issue?
    Thx in advance

Installing anti-malware after the fact is sort of pointless and a waste of effort.
Run through this list of fixes, disable all login items and don't run any third party programs (until they have been reinstalled from original clean sources after the malware scan later)
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Create a new user account and transfer files (only) manually to the other accounts dropbox so they change permissions.
Of course backup files manually to a external drive (not only TimeMachine as it's infected also) before starting.
Once you have a purged OS X and a new user account, then install a free scanner like Virus Barrier Express and run a scan.
I doubt very much you have anything, but if there is anything left of the malware after doing all the above it's going to be in the Applications folder or the infected user account folder.
But you can't scan anything with a infected OS X, so that needs to be purged first.
Once the scan comes up clean, try reinstalling all your third party apps to fix them.
So it's likely your not infected, but rather there is a problem with your machines software or hardware.
    Good Luck

  • Icons/Folders/Thumbnails look "washed-out" in Tiger. Is there a setting?

    Hello.
After installing Tiger I notice that the icons for the folders and the picture thumbnails look washed-out or grayed-out, not fully colorful as usual. I looked at all the Finder preferences but can find nothing to change it.
It's not so bad for the folders on the desktop but I really need to be able to see picture thumbnails clearly.
What setting am I not setting??
    Thanks!!

From your description, it sounds like the "Finder" setting to display all items including those that are invisible has been enabled. In earlier versions of OS X, the behaviour was that only normally invisible items would appear "grayed out" (a useful indicator of its status), whereas normally visible items would have the regular appearance. This changed in "Tiger", where everything appears faded with that setting, something I would consider to be yet another example of the trend in erosion of usability of the OS X "Finder" that seems to accompany every revision.
As far as I know, there is no built in GUI way to change that setting - it likely became enabled through the use of some third party utility. Such utilities are an annoyance because, while they generally do no harm, they do nothing more than set "hidden" settings that are a part of OS X. As such, the effects of the utilities may persist, even after they themselves have been completely removed from the system. Then it is left to the user to try to figure out what setting was modified, or to remember what app they may have downloaded then uninstalled months in the past.
Your options are unfortunately limited, you presumably had chosen to display hidden files in the past for a reason - under 10.4, normally visible items will appear "washed out" when showing invisible items and I'm not aware of a way to change that. On the other hand, disabling the setting should cause visible items to appear with full opacity, but you would no longer be able to see the "invisible" items. The setting can be stored in a number of places, but for starters, to disable it, try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these commands:<pre>defaults delete -g AppleShowAllFiles
    defaults delete com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'</pre>After entering the commands, restart the "Finder" by clicking on its "Dock" icon.

  • Photos are more washed out in FireFox than Safari

Hi. I've created photo pages in iweb, and when i view the pages in Firefox, the images look much less saturated/more washed out, than when i view them in safari. Any idea why this might be?
the site is www.coutroulis.com then go to 'shots'
    thx

Not all browsers support Color Management like Safari does. With FireFox, it can work, but is turned off in the default installation. Sites that look very nice on a Mac monitor with Safari can look very washed out on a PC with IE or FireFox (Safari for Windows does better).
Here is a page that explains the concept pretty well (these issues were not a problem for me in the past as I used GoLive and now Dreamweaver, with graphics prepared by Photoshop):
    http://www.gballard.net/psd/golive_pageprofile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html#
I've found that having both browsers open to the same page makes it easier to see the examples properly.
Note the colors in the chart about half way down the page. The chart is built with graphics that have color management information that tells the browser how to deal with it. Safari shows the named colors perfectly (the box with RED text is actually Red in color), Firefox does not (the box with Red text is actually Blue in color). This is an extreme way to show that some browsers are using Color Management info from the pictures on the page. Your photos have information that Safari is using, but not FireFox.
The page has instructions on how to turn on Color Management in FireFox but you can't turn it on for everyone who comes to your site.
The page is in depth, with opinions on how to avoid the problems at all by using the sRGB Color Space which is the default option when using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and "Save For Web". "Save For Web" is also just about the easiest way to get great looking photo's at the smallest file size, for web page photo's.
So you get three things from the Photoshop programs - Graphics load faster because they are smaller than the less powerful iWeb optimization, they often look better than other programs that just let you save as a jpg with a variable % quality level, and the sRGB Color Space used in the photo's works well in all browsers and platforms.
Web Site Design has always been about compromise - quality, speed, and accuracy. If your site is only for you and some other Mac/Windows friends who are using Safari - No Problem, otherwise you might want to adapt as needed for better pages for a larger audience.

  • Mac 10.6.8 is printing very light and washed out, however, the color prints fine from Safari and my husbands PC, help!

My Mac 10.6.8 has always printed great from Firefox to my Canon printer, but now the black and color is all washed out. I can print same page from Safari or my husbands PC and the page is great! What is going on! ?

    Other things to try:
Examine your specific version of Optima by going to Type menu > Find Font, clicking on the Optima font and choosing More Info (I think) and find the specific version number. See if you can uninstall the font and reinstall another Optima font with a different, preferably newer version number. There has (historically) been a bad version of Optima floating around for years. Maybe you have it.
Use a free utility like FontNuke or FontFinagler to get your Mac OS to reset its font plists. Sometimes that makes the OS feel better.
Use the built-in Disk Utility to repair file permissions. You never know.
Export your old document out to IDML and reopen that resulting idml file back into a new freshly written INDD file. This might remove internal database corruptions.
All these are chicken-soup things to try and they might be good for you.
    Best,
    Mike Witherell in Florida
