Safari Top Sites: Single click not enough

I don't know if this is a bug or anything else, but it's a bit annoying:
When you open a new tab in Safari and the Top Sites shows up, a single click on a site doesn't get you to the page, it just updates the Top Sites so the blue border is shown around the sites.
This is what it looks like: http://youtu.be/88W_KJAj8Hc
I hope this bug gets fixed soon or anybody has got the solution to this.
Greetings
Silvan

It's not possible to mark as unsolved.
You didn't mention you were doing this in full screen mode in your first post.
Try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that off if there are any installed. Quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn extensions back on then uninstall one a time to test.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If nothing above helped, try a Safe Mode boot. A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches thay may help.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from your Apple () menu.
Then try Safari TopSites in full screen mode.
BTW, it's not a bug. No problem using TopSites in full screen mode here.

  • Safari "Top Sites" Website thumbnails not populating or staying stationary.

I am running Safari 5.1.7 on a PC running Windows 7 and I am wondering if Safari "Top Sites" will keep those thumb nail pages stationary and obey the order I am trying to keep them.  Also, having issue with the Website thumnails are not populating.  Help!

I, as well, have been experiencing the exact problem that both, drpilgrim60 and iainnicol have been experiencing! I am totally frustrated with this whole thing!!!! I have searched and searched the web for a solution, but to no avail! I decided to start using Safari because Firefox sold out to MicroSoft and now force their users to allow bing on the browser, which is the worst search engine on earth. I couldn't get rid of it from my browser, and I still can't.
I am so surprised that Apple has this discussion board yet has not said anything about the glitch with their program. Do they care? I would like to think so. I have been a Mac man ever since the Mac SE30, and will always use a MAC, unfortunately, my new Mac had died and I have had to use a PC (Piece of C---) for several months now. I hope that Apple addresses this issue, as soon as possible, on this thread. If not I will have to find another web browser to use. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a browser other than Chrome and Internet Explorer?

  • Safari Top Sites thumbnail images not updating automatically?

is it happening just with me, or the automatic update of the Top Sites thumbnail images is not working anymore?

It is intentional. When on the Top Sites view, hit Command+R to refresh the images. Supposedly this was done because the previews don't do a good enough job of detecting weird login pages and wifi password pages.
Personally, I'd like it to have an option to go back to updating the images on its own again.

  • Before every time I use to open a new tab it comes as top site. Now not anymore and instead is an automatically website calle Only Search. I went to Safari preference I change everything and when I quit Safari all the changes are gone.

Every time I used to open a new tab it comes as top site. Now not anymore , instead it open in a website called Only Search, I went to safari preferences and made all changes but after I quit Safari and open again all changes are gone. I can not change anything and new tab comes by it self with other website.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • 10.6.2 update - the graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites is not Fixed!

    Hello lyon09,
Unfortunately i have not yet made it to the Genius Bar as of yet. I ended up canceling the appointment i re-scheduled too and haven't made another one. Basically, i was only gonna go in just because i said the Battery gave me a "Service Battery" error message, which means that "the battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Have your computer checked by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer."
So that was gonna be my main reason for going in there, and at that time discussing and showing him what Top Sites is doing to me.
    1. Top Sites has a distorted graphics that have been there since 10.6 came out....10.6.1 was supposed to fix it, did not....then 10.6.2 was supposed to fix it, and as of right now it still is not fixed.
I have done an Archive & Install with no success.
    2. Battery showed me that Service Battery error message just that one evening. My battery was drained completely and when i plugged it in and got it working again, the Service Battery error was there for about 45 minutes or so until it got a sufficient charge it decided it would go away. I haven't seen it since.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/20865.html
It has now been about a week since i last saw that message.
That was my main reason for canceling the Genius Bar appointment, because the battery seems to be working for the time being. If i see that message again though, then i won't hesitate to take it in.
I'm starting to wonder now though, should i just take it in anyways. Because if i saw that message, on the battery, and they need to replace that - then if there is some other reason for the distorted graphics in Top Sites, like maybe the Logic Board....then i want to get it fixed. It's under warranty for 3 years.
I just haven't found reason other than having that fluke Service Battery message to go in and have it checked out. If my video gets really whacked out or i see that battery message again, then i'll go promptly.
Does anybody else have any input on this? Thanks!

  • Safari Top Sites Not Updating

My Top Sites is not self-updating. I no longer get the 'star' notice when a web page has been changed and the image shown on Top Sites is from my last visit to the site.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with the Top Sites thumbnails not updating themselves (without having to manually visit the site). It had been working, but now it has not for a couple months. I forget if it coincided with updating Safari to 4.0.5 or not; it seemed like it was right around that time.
I should also mention that my internet connection and setup have remained consistent from the time that it was working to now. I am not behind a firewall or proxy of any sort.
(Note to Jared_Dub: The blue star is shown on thumbnails that you placed there manually as opposed to your most visited pages which Safari automatically places. It has nothing to do with showing you if there have been changes to the page or not. Just thought I should clarify that point.)

  • Top Sites page does not stay open after clicking New Tabs

I used to be able to click on “Open a new tab” and the “my top sites” would be available on that page. Now when I click on “Open a new tab”, “my top site” appears and disappears immediately; each and every time. However, if I open 2 new tabs and then go back and click on the 1st tab then the 2nd tab, “my top sites” are available. Also can I get my top sites as my home page?

    There is this pref: browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground
But it doesn't have effect if you open links via the Library, it only works when opened via the browser window (menu, toolbar, sidebar).

  • Yosemite safari top sites not updating

Now that I am hooked on using Top Sites, it has stopped updating since I updated to Yosemite. Is there some setting I need to change? Sure can't find it in Pref

I found the way to solve this problem for me. It's simply and quick. Just switch of Safari option in iCloud config at my iPhone. Now Top Sites works fine on my MacBook.

  • Shaky safari top sites page

When I open a new window or tab with the top sites, all the top sites "SHAKE". I have a screen recording of this, but I have no clue how to (or if I can) post it. It happens all the time… I am not sure how to tell if it is running in 32 bit or 64 bit.

    HI,
Uninstall CoolIris and see if the problem persists.
    http://www.freshblurbs.com/how-uninstall-cooliris-safari-mac
*"I am not sure how to tell if it is running in 32 bit or 64 bit."*
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window undre the General tab you wil see the option for "Open in 32-bit mode"...
Try a new window or tab with Top Sites. If the "shake" persists. If it does ...
    Try Safari maintenance.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    Quit Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete all the sub-folders within that one.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete any of these files you have there:
    • Downloads.plist
    • History.plist
    • LastSession.plist

Repair disk permissions...

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Restart Safari
You can download and reinstall CoolIris here.

    It really is cool.

  • Safari Top Sites doesn't work (on my system at least)

Open a blank tab or window in Safari ... You get a browser window blank except for a grey history search box in the bottom right corner ... Try clicking the 'Top Sites' icon in the toolbar, and nothing happens (still the blank window with the search box)
    Anyone else seeing this?

I'm seeing the same problem. Even though I've visited a few sites now, Top Sites is still, upon launch, an empty page with a search box at the bottom. As a matter of fact, clicking randomly in the blank, white area will launch a page, which implies that the top sites are "there" only not rendering. When I have a web page open (such as this one) and click on History > Show Top Sites, the page I'm currently viewing remains on the screen but its features, such as links, become unclickable. The "Search" box appears at the bottom of the page, rendered on top of the page I was viewing.
This is definitely more than an issue of a flushed cache.

  • Safari "Top Sites" and Belkin wireless router

Have been experiencing a problem with Safari / Belkin router for the past 3 days. I have noticed it occurs most often when using the "top sites" function of Safari. It seems that whenever I use top sites it causes a disconnect between my macbook and the belkin wireless router. My computer becomes disconnected from the router, even though the router continues to function as normal.
In tandem, a parallel problem which may be related:
In past three days I have been receiving constant floating window prompt to enter my Gmail info to "update RSS feed... password will be sent in clear text... etc." while using Safari. I have read other threads on this issue and some people attribute it to the top sites function, since updating Safari to the latest version.
Anyone else having the same issue with their wireless router when using the top sites function of Safari? To reiterate - the connection seems only to be lost when clicking on a top site in a new tab or window.
    Thanks for all replies!

    HI,
Try Safari Maintenance and see if that makes a difference.
Also, I just saw this post... might help you. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2182985&tstart=0

  • Firefox Top Sites page will not download

My Firefox, OSX, and Adobe Flashplayer software systems are all up to date.  The issue is that the Top sites page on Firefox will not download.  All that appears is a blank gray screen.
    Please advise.

Can you start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> by holding down the Shift/Options key?
You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u>:

  • Safari top sites taken over by pop-up websites

Hello! I only use Safari for my streaming of movies and soccer games, and recently when viewing my top sites it is full of fake dating sites, betting sites and generic (youtube style) video sites. I understand popups don't register to your history, so how did these sites register into my top sites? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Mek sure:   Block pop-up windows   is selected.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, install the AdBlock for Safari extension here.
