Safari unstable
While I have Firefox, I find it mind bogglingly too slow, so use Safari 5.1.5 for general daily web use.
Recently Safari has become sluggish and very unstable. I can't for example log into Apple support communities (had to use Firefox for this posting), my e-mail account, and so on. When Safari is running the entire machine slows down considerably too; rebooting - then not using Safari is the only solution I have found at present. I have used Webkit, but I believe that runs on the back of Safari, so even webkit is now unstable too.
Emptying the cashe, resetting, all seem unable to resolve the issue.
The problem seems to date back to downloading 5.1.5, but that may just be coincidence. The issues seems specific to Safari and it's impact when running.
I am considering which Safari files to delete from the 'Users' folder and reinstalling Safari; but just wondered if others had the same experiences or a solution?
Any ideas to point me in the right direction welcome.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
Last warning: DO NOTHING unless you have a backup and you know you can restore from it.
Read this whole message before doing anything.
Quit Safari if it’s running.
Step 1
In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Select the Safari icon in that folder and press the key combination command-I to open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in the Info window labeled Open in 32-bit mode. If that box is checked, uncheck it. Close the Info window and the Applications folder.
Open the Library folder in your home folder as follows:
☞ If running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar.
☞ If running an older version of Mac OS X, select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar and enter “~/Library” (without the quotes) in the text box that opens.
Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.Safari
Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess
Caches/Metadata/Safari
Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess.plist
Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
Step 2
If Safari still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder and move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop (some may not exist):
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
Cookies/Cookies.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
PubSub/Database
Safari
(Note: you are not moving the Safari application. You’re moving a folder named “Safari.”)
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings and bookmarks will be lost.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Safari again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were, overwriting the newer ones that will have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the files you deleted in step 1. Stop here and post again.
If Safari is now working normally (apart from the lost settings), look inside the “Safari” folder on the Desktop for a file named “Bookmarks.plist”. Select File ▹ Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from that file. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the items you moved to the Desktop.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each step to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 2, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you moved or deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. If you followed these instructions, you have a working backup and you know how to restore from it. If you didn’t follow the instructions, I can’t help.

Safari unstable since upgrading to Lion OS
Since upgrading to Lion OS I have been unable to access my remote office though Safari due to Safari quitting / crashing when using the site. This did not happen when using Snow Leopard. I have inserted the diagnostics text I receive when Safari quits / crashes. Any help gratefully received.

A little over a week ago I updated Safari to 4.0.4. Since then I have noticed that Safari crashes on websites that use a lot of flash. The spinning beach balls comes up and I end up having to force quit. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash then running disk permissions and restarting my computer. I've cleared the cache and reset Safari multiple times. I have tried leaving flash uninstalled. Everything seems to work fine (no beach balls) but I can't use a lot of websites or watch videos. I have noticed that firefox also crashes on the same websites. Unfortunately I don't have an external so I haven't been able to back up my computer so I can't use Time Machine to uninstall the update. I've noticed on other threads people ask the OP to list what plugins/input methods they use. I don't know how to check that - but i will if someone tells me how. I have checked the library/internet plugins and it is empty. Help! Surfing the web without flash is a huge pain!
HI,
Could be a 3rd party plugins causing the problem. Go to ~/Library/Internet Plugins. Move any 3rd party plugins to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Right the click the Safari icon in your Dock then click Open in Finder. Then right click the Safari icon, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window under General make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
If 3rd party plugins aren't the issue and you aren't running Safari in Rosetta... download and install the 10.6.2 combo update available here. It's ok to do this even though you are already running 10.6.2.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Safari settings still not lasting
Good Evening,
I recently posted a question which I felt was answered at the time correctly in reference to maintaining my settings in Safari. I'll attach the URL as well as repost the question asked:
How do I lock the favorites bar and stop the "welcome screen"?
I've been a Mac user for quite some time and recently upgraded to OX X 10.10, and Safari 8.0. My issue is I like my favorites bar to be available, however each time I quit Safari I have to hit Shift+Command+b to force it to appear again. Is there a way I can lock this setting so I don't have to set up my browser each time I sit down to the computer? Also, I would like to know what it takes to get rid of the "Welcome to Safari" banner from starting up each time I restart the program. I went to preferences>general and tried to change the settings in "New tab opens with" and "New windows open with", however these settings reset each time I restart Safari as well. Thanks for any assistance
Bottom line is that I unchecked the general "close windows when quitting an app" and this worked it seemed, however the issue is back. If anyone knows how to lock the favorites bar permanently aside from switching to firefox, opera, or chrome I would appreciate the help. So, I believe I have found a fix that is somewhat long and technical. The thread I found it in was here:
safari unstable
for some reason on this new update safari has become unstable for some users I'm guessing. The following steps seemed to have helped me (NOTE: I've edited the procedure to reflect what I've seen on my Mac...Linc Davis deserves all credit for the assist!)
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
Last warning: DO NOTHING unless you have a backup and you know you can restore from it.
Read this whole message before doing anything. (I copied and pasted it to a word doc and printed it out)
Quit (command+q) Safari if it’s running.
***I didn't see the above first step, as my Mac is already upgraded to Yosemite.***
Open the Library folder in your home folder as follows:
***** ON YOSEMITE - in finder press shift+command+g in order to find the "Go to Folder" and search for ~/Library option discussed below"******
☞ If running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar.
☞ If running an older version of Mac OS X, select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar and enter “~/Library” (without the quotes) in the text box that opens.
Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.Safari
Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess
Caches/Metadata/Safari
Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess.plist
Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder. (For me my browser was still not saving settings at this point)
Step 2
If Safari still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder and move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop (some may not exist):
(I REMOVED A FEW MORE FILES THAN THE ORIGINAL PROCEDURE - the different ones are underlined)
Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plst - corrupt (not sure if this matters, however I see corrupt to be a bad thing)
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies - corrupt
Cookies/Cookies.plist
Cookies/Cookies.plist_temp_9140_0.dat (figured temp files should go too)
Cookies/Cookies.plist_temp_41767_0.dat
Cookies/Cookies.plist_temp_44798_0.dat
Cookies/Cookies.plist_temp_58558_0.dat
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
PubSub/Database
Safari
(Note: you are not moving the Safari application. You’re moving a folder named “Safari.”)
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings and bookmarks will be lost. (this is where I found success...my custom settings were remaining even after I quit Safari!)
I will leave this thread up, in case someone comes up with a more direct reason why this works, however at this time it seems as though things are working how I want them again. -
Another 10.4.11 victim
So I was at least able to open this webpage with safari (although nothing else).
I am looking at solutions for fixing my computer. Of course, I was using this long weekend to finish an important project, and now my computer is shot. I see suggestions for things I should do in the future before updating, but I am hoping for help with the archive/reinstall. (That seems to be the only thing that is helpful for people?)
I have very limited ability to search this website. It seems to make safari unstable and it crashes. Can anyone post the directions for how to do this?
I do not have my start up disks. I just moved and I can't find them. I am also not particularly computer savvy. Any help SO GREATLY APPRECIATED.The first thing you have to do is obtain your Tiger install disk. You cannot do an archive and install without it. Sorry.
Maybe you could post your specific problems and someone might be able to help you. Usually it helps to do things like troubleshooting a Mac in a stepwise process and not do a lot of stuff all at once. Do you have any backups of important data? Try to backup as much as you can before you do much else.
Regards,
Steve M.
Edit: Take a look at this advice too.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5915204
Also note that you will need to repair permissions during this process. You do this with Disk Utility while started up normally. You will also need to repair disk. Ordinarily this needs to be done while booted from your Tiger install disk. Since yours is missing, you'll have to use a command called fsck instead. See the following:

Updated Safari, now Laptop is unstable
Hi all
I installed the latest Safari update (8.0.2) today and now my Macbook Pro is quite unstable. I've had it (OS) crash several times which it has never done since I bought it! The mouse pointer has randomly frozen then disappeared & safari now regularly freezes when trying to open websites, or while browsing a site.
Any help on this issue would be appreciated &/or is anyone else is having the same issues since updating?
CheersGenieo Adware is installed. Removing it will help.
If you have another browser installed, use it.
If not, launch App store and get another browser for temporary use.
Remove it afterwards.
1. Use free AdwareMedic by clicking “Download ” from here
http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.
Once done, quit AdwareMedic by clicking AdwareMedic in the menu bar and selecting
“Quit AdwareMedic”.
or
Remove the adware manually by following the “HowTo” from Apple.

2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn those off and relaunch Safari to test .
Turn those on one by one and test. -
Can't Use Safari Any Longer. Too Unstable......
I've tried everything. I've deleted, reloaded, gotten rid of preferences, deleted all extensions, stopped using Flash and all the other suggested "fixes" all to no avail. Safari continues to to extremely unstable and usually, right in the middle of doing something impolrtant. I've gone to using Firefox, which isn't my favorite either, but at least it doesn't crash during use. These problems seemed to increase/intensify with the latest update. I can't tell you how many times I reported a "bug" but obviously, it's not a priority even noting that there are many out there with the same issues. What's goin' on here? This is not typical Apple! C'mon guys and gals........let's get this fixed before there's an all out revolt and we all lose confidence with what used to be a great browser.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. -
My Safari is unstable (screen fliocks up and down) This is especially frustration when I scroll to a link, then it moves while I am try ing to click it. It also zooms in to the largest size frequently. Is there a fix for this short of reinstalling Safari?

When I click "share" icon for Facebook, ensuing popup windw unstable. pops up then gone, cyclically, won't stop until I close originating tab/website.pop up blocker off & in safe mode. can't post FB unless use Safari. Mac OS 10.6.8. Tried to post pic wouldn't work
O.k. Thanks for the clarification. I poked around in my TimeCapsule router's settings (TimeCapsule is an Apple Airport Extreme router with attached hard drive for wireless backup/storage). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can disable multicasting with the TimeCapsule. I can change the multicasting 'rate'. Settings are Low, Medium, High. It's currently set to Low.
I did a few web searches, and found an Apple.com article: <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US> which explained how to disable Bonjour Service Advertisements. I believe this is the same thing as 'Multicasting'. The process is a modification of "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist", and a restart of the Mac is required afterwards.
I'm a bit concerned that disabling multicasting will interfere with my AppleTVs and iTunes music sharing, but I may try it next time I'm up for a computer workout. This task will require editing of system preference files, could require multiple restarts, might interfere with my AppleTVs, could interfere with my iTunes file sharing, doesn't have a documented relationship to my problem.
This is way to difficult for something that should just work. Did you say you had read something about a relationship between this bonjour multicasting and smb connectivity? If it was online could you post the link?
I'm currently able to connect to the drive using NFS, but I have to manually configure that connection each time I reboot (can't get the 'Disk Utility' configured to do it automatically). While it's working with NFS, it's not my preferred connect method (for various reasons). -
Safari has become unstable.
Since upgrading to the Lion OS, Safari has becme unstable. It often fails (suddenly quits) when I attempt downloads from the internet. I did not have this problem when using Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?
Launch the Console application and look in "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to Safari. Select the most recent one and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot.

Unstable safari 5.1 on OSx 10.6.8, when is the next safari due?
After the latest bunch of updates to OSX and safari, it has become unstable, freezing up or just closing all of a sudden. I'm not just talking about one tab but all tabs, all safari windows closing or freezing. This is happeneing on the latest Macbook pro 15" and 13". Anybody else having the same problems? any hints to solve this problem would be much appriciated...
Thanks Kasper. No reports under user diagnostics.
But under Console messages I found a whole mega long list, her is a tiny copy of how it looks like:

Since I have done the 3.0 update, Safari on my iPod Touch 1st generation has become very unstable (it crashes more than 2 times in 1 minute) so I wanted to know if some other people had also this problem and how to resolve it...
It is not a Wifi or what else problem it is a application problem (Safari lag THEN crashes after) and yes I restored from a backup and it is not a network problem because before i update my iTouch, I did nort gad this problem....
And I just wanted to know if I backup as new iPod, will I loose all my songs from my iTuneslibrary and else or will I keep them and then I just have to synchronise my iPod and get my songs and apps and else back? -
I find Safari is very unstable on iPad!
Are other people finding iPad is very unstable when using Safari?
No, but then again the problem didn't seem to exist before iOS 5.x. Look in the many other existing threads on this issue for suggestions/fixes.
