Safari weirdness: "can't connect to server", jumbled websites, no images

For the past month or so, Safari has been acting strangely.
When clicking a link on a website, when the new tab opens, I'm often given a "safari cannot connect to server message."  Sometimes reloading the page resolves the issue, other times it is impossible to get to the page. (This has happened on a variety of websites: WordPress, Amazon, Apple.) If I copy the URL and use Chrome or Firefox, the link opens. So, it doesn't seem to be associated with the website, but with the browser.
Also: I get weird website layouts, like this (notice the upper left corner, and the way the Amazon images are vertical rather than horizontal)--
This has also happened on other sites, but, again, opening the URL in a different browser works fine.
I have tried deleting cookies, cache, turned off extensions, made sure that Java/Flash are up-to-date.  I'm at a loss....
This also happens on my iPad Mini2 , though it has not happened on my iPhone5

1. From the Safari menu bar, select
          Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
2. Select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data...
and confirm. Test.

  • Safari periodically can't connect to server

I'm using Safari Version 6.0.3 (8536.28.10) on a new iMac with OS C Version 10.8.3. Frequently, I'll try to go to a page and get a screen that says Safari can't connect to the server. There's no problem with the Web address because it will connect to it later. Here's a screen shot of the latest message.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

  • Safari "Can't connect to server" with parental controls enabled

Safari says "Can't connect to server" when my childrens' accounts have parental controls enabled. Is there a way to enable parental controls on the administer's account??

    Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

  • Safari and Youtube can't connect to server

Safari and Youtube can't connect to server but I can use iTunes online store. Isn't that strange? Any ideas why?
I use static ip-adresses on my home network with a WEP 128bit security. I have entered all configuration that I enter under tcp/ip properties on my but there is one property on the touch that I don't recognise from my PC and that is someting that translated could be named "Search Domains". It's the last property under the static wireless config tab.

I have no idea what I am doing... but once i changed the proxy (HTTP) my life is just miserable, no sites open, like its really annoying. Do you know how to fix it.

Yip this is what the website looks like. Great job Linc Davis.
Not surprised that the "Shop" tab is missing. Darn.
Well can you try to access it's "sister" website: astralmusic.com and astralmusicshop.com?
Since you are awesome with the "Flash" can you investigate if this website has a issue withis this "Flash" too?

  • Almost constant "Safari can't connect to server"

Starting a few weeks ago, I have started getting regular error messages that "safari can't connect to server". It is getting really annoying! It also affects Firefox. I have made every change I know to with internet settings (Open DNS settings, etc..), but nothing works. I have contacted my DSL ISP and they cannot find any problems with my service, which makes sense as I have had the service for nearly 2 years and this problem has just started recently. Oh yeah...I upgraded to 10.4.8 about the same time this started. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
    Thanks in advance!

Update....after installing "Cocktail" system utility software and running all the systems, guess what??????
No more issues! I'm not sure if it was the combination of the re-install and then the system utilities run....but I am back to surfing the web with ease!
Thanks a million for your help!

  • Safari can't connect to server

Hi, I'm encountering an error when I try to access specific sites. Safari tells me "Safari can't connect to server". Some sites work fine and for others (that I was previously able to visit) it tells me Safari can't connect to the server. These same websites I'm also not able to open with FireFox (so I don't think it's Safari related). A previous post suggested checking if i had any proxies selected, which I don't. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Hi again Vera
I also created another account on this machine and the same page were also not able to load there.
Thanks for trying, the other account as I recommended.
Same results indicates a system wide issue. Check your router, with the update of the os 10.4.8, the firmware updates for said items are lagging behind.
It would work on your other machine because it does not run the same os.
Please note that this is for a firmware updates for routers
not your Mac, as otherwise suggested by Hope.
    Here are three popular routers,
    Airport Firmware updates
    Linksys FirmWare
    Netgear

  • Safari can't connect to server problem (just one website)

After I upgraded my mac about a week ago, I can't open a particular website using my home wifi (Safari can't connect to server) It lets me open page but one, which happens to be my mail website. However, when I use a public wifi, I can open that website without any problem. Any ideas why this happens?

    Linc.
I have been unable to connect to specific random favorite sites and tried your posts suggestion
"Boot into Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results."
I was able to connect to all my unavailable sites. Can you help me discover what is preventing my access when not in Recovery mode. I Made the Safari preferences match the recovery mode Safari preferences so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
    I ran EtreCheck

Last night I opened up my MacBook and Safari gives the 'can't connect to server' error for any page I try and visit.
I tried resetting Safari, clearing cache, rebooting Safair, rebooting computer, resetting router and modem, uninstalling/reinstalling Safari.
    Firefox still works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Figured out my issue.
It was a conflict with an old version of Little Snitch running with Safari 5.1.2
I updated to the latest Little Snitch version and no more issues.

Safari has stopped opening certain webpages and says can't connect to server... This started 3 months ago with FB and now randomly with another site... all other sites are fine.. Help?
I've tried resetting safari, deleting all webpage data and setting time/date to automatic, but no such luck.
The message that comes up is: "Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server 'Facebook' "
I'd be genuinely impressed if anyone were to actually work out what was wrong.

    Hi ..
Might be a cookies, cache, or extensions issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:  Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

My WiFi went down and rebooted.  WiFi connected on iPhone, IPad and MacBook Pro.  The iPad gives an error message from mail, Safari and other apps, "can't connect to server".  What is wrong and how do i correct settings on the iPad?

    Hello MBreck47
There are a few more things you can try to troubleshoot issues with maintaining a connection to Wi-Fi. Check out the article below for those steps to resolve your issue.

  • Safari/firefox can't connect to the server!!?

I have the most basic of html pages on my Mac, in the library > webserver > documents folder and the page won't display anymore when I test from dreamweaver.
If I go through the safari/firefox file menu > open, then the page displays fine.
I have also just tried opening a test.php page, and that no longer displays the php server info. I have just tried to open a page via the file menu > open, and the page just displays all the html/php code in it.
My PHP has stopped working hasn't it?
On Friday, I had a load of files that suddenly appeared from nowhere in my hard drive... these files had names something like %&48()_kh&502£gdkkn^KN, and they were totally empty of content; they also had a zero k file size.
This all seemed to appear after I had moved the user library preference of com.apple.finder.plist due to a super drive error I have been having ( was advised to do that, but it didn't work, so I moved it back). Have I done something really wrong in deleting all these strangely named, zero k files?
Is there something simple that is wrong? I have checked the system prefs and my Web Sharing is on, and the mysql is running.
    Thanks
    Mat

    Thanks for the reply.
Internet access is working... except for some sites, including "discussions.Apple.com" and "channel 4.com",amongst others,  the "Safari Can't connect the server" ... "can't open the page http:// .... because Safari can't connect to the server". However, some sites can be accessed across all browsers, and there does not seem to be any logic. However, the sites can be accessed through the use of an anonymous proxy.
The problem arose before I installed MacScan and Sophos as a means of rectifying the problem.
Other remedies I have attempted have involving reloading the webpage, clearing the browser cache and cookies, and have even tried to flush the network routing map.

  • "Can't connect to server" Error

I'm using a 24" iMac running 10.6.7 and I keep getting a "can't connect to server" error with Safari for certain websites. While I could have posted this topic under the Safari section, the problem is not Safari. I tested other web browsers on my iMac (Firefox and IE) and still got an error. I did all the trouble shooting like: empty cache, reset safari, cookies, proxies, /index.html. Now, I was thinking it could be my router, but I am able to access those websites through my iPhone and my iPhone is connected to my wireless router. So I figured the problem is with my iMac settings.

    Hi Opti1CS,
    Welcome to the forums!
Have you tried a clear the DNS cache?
I found that I switch networks allot; witch leans my DNS cache rather jumbled up. After having to reset the DNS cache for the 10th time in a week. I ended up stumbling over DNS flusher. I find it easer then memorizing a terminal command.
