Safari will not download most files

The only thing I can download are Apple updates: Not 3rd party application updates, not Firefox, not efax attachment files.
I am considering reinstalling Safari from the CD and/or trying to download the OS X 10.4.8 Intel update. Should I?
Any suggestions will much appreciated.

Sometimes these problems can be quite the trial and error due to the multiple interaction of various files etc. At least we know this problem is specific to your User Account.
If you haven't done so, move the com.apple.safari plist back to its original location, writing over the newly created file.
Move to the desktop the Safari folder (which holds bookmarks, history, etc), and restart Safari. Try a download. If no relief, move the folder back, replacing the newly created one. If it does work, then you'll need to move one file at a time back to its original location, restarting Safari each time to isolate the problem file.
If the above doesn't work, go to the User Library>Caches>Safari and move that file to the desktop. Same routine as the previous step (restart Safari, etc). If no go, move the folder back etc.
The last one to try is the cookies.plist file found in your User Library>Cookies folder. Same routine, except restart the computer before restarting Safari.
Post back.

I have recently upgraded to safari version 4.02 on a 20" iMac with OS 10.5.7. I have tried to download files from a number of web sites and a number of different file types and none will download. Files that I have tried to download are psd, png, tiff, PDF, eps, etc.... Instead of my files downloading, I am presented with a new browser page chock full of (character) text. Can anyone help me fix this?

    The following worked for me under OS 10.4.11 on a iMac G5 with Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard. Go to;
    http://shimshak.iblogget.com/2007/11/07/view-pdf-files-in-safari-3/
and follow the directions. Whata guy!!
There’s a similar problem with .pdf’s under the new Firefox 3.5.3. I found a fix for that — if you use Adobe Acrobat. Under, Firefox>Preferences>Applications>Portable Document Format,
set the application to your version of Acrobat. Preferences will let you browse over to your copy of Acrobat.
    I hope these are helpful.

  • Safari will not download a file

I Am trying to download a Wetransfer zipped file, but safari says it cannot download it. Any suggestions?

Do you have an app on your iPad that supports zipped files ? Unless you have an app that supports zipped files (and which you can use 'open in' in Safari to copy it to it, or if you can browse to and download the file directly in the app), and can unzip them (I'm assuming that you want to unzip it on your iPad) and supports the type of file(s) in the archive, then you won't be able to save the file.

  • Will a program mention for MAC OSX be allowed to download on the newest iPad version. If so, how do I get past the "safari" can not download this file?

No, because iPads do not run Mac OS X. They run iOS.

  • Safari will not open pdf files.

Safari will not open pdf files, instead I get a blank grey screen. How can I get a viewable and downloadable screen/file? Tried Alt/Option to view and it doesn't work either. Firefox and Chrome will not work either.

For Mac check the Safari preferences.
General to set the options for opening links from applications.
Tabs to set the other options.
Hold down the command key to open any link in a new tab.
Sorry, gave up windows several years ago.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari will not display pdf files since installing OS 10.8.2

Safari will not display pdf files uner Lion 10.8.2

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Make sure you have updated Acrobat X to the latest version 10.1.3.  They updated the PDF plug-in in 10.1.1:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83708/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_ 10.1.1.pdf#page=4

  • "Safari could not download the file because there is not enough disc space"

"Safari could not download the file because there is not enough disc space"
I have 60gb available on my MBA and I have "read and write" privileges for the download folder. This error seemingly came out of nowhere. It doesn't matter if the file is 1gb or 10mb, I'll get the error. All I have to do is remove the .download extension and I can use the file which is complete despite the error.
This is really annoying so any help would be appreciated.

I never used to have a problem with creating a new folder and moving the download into it
But you'll have a problem if you do it now.

  • I am getting the following message "safari could not download the file (440MB) because there is not enough disk space.  disk utility says i have 249.8 GB of available disk space.  any suggestions as to what is the problem would be appreciated

i am getting the following message "safari could not download the file (440 MB) because there is not enough disk space.  please delete files or download to another disk."  when i check system information it tells me i have 249.82 GB of disk space available.  any suggestions as to what i can do to resolve this problem.

    don
thanks for your suggestion.  that is the same advice that i got from the geek squad at the local apple store.
i did what he instructed but it did not work.  i have since called apple support twice regarding the problem.  they had me start the computer in safe mode, going into the library and deleting a phlist file (i think) do a repair disk permissions, do a repair disk, empty the cache, and finally the last guy told me to unplug the computer from the wall socket and restart.
when i mentioned the advice you and the apple store guy gave me they sort of poo pooed it saying that was done when they did all this other stuff.
i am now waiting for the download to be completed to see if unplugging the computer had any effect.
thanks again for your kindness in answering my concern.

  • Safari could not download the file "iTunes12.0.1.dmg" because there is not enough free disk space.

Safari could not download the file “iTunes12.0.1.dmg” because there is not enough free disk space.  How do i resolve this issue?

    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Time Machine
If there is a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then back ON. Close the window.
Restart the computer. Try the download again.

  • Safari could not download the file "Firefox 20.0.dmg" because there is not enough free disk space.

What does this error message mean. I have pleanty of free disk space - Safari could not download the file “Firefox 20.0.dmg” because there is not enough free disk space.

That misleading error message can be the result of moving a download while it's in progress. Right-click the download package and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. The file you downloaded may be in the folder that opens.

  • Safari could not download the file -there is not enough free disk space

I've tried downloading Windows Media Viewer, StuffIt Expander, and Adobe Reader however when I do I receive an error message as follows (example is for the StuffIt Expander -similar message for the other programs): Safari could not download the file "nstuffitexp12.01.dmg" because there is not enough free disk space.
There is PLENTY of free disk space on my hard drive. The hard drive has 20 GB of Used space and 129 GB of Available space.
A few simple fixes I've tried, that did not help: I cleared my Cache, I emptied my Trash, I restarted the computer. (sorry, I'm a Mac novice -not sure what else to try)
What's wrong? How do I download these files??
I would like to open Window Media Viewer files (.wmv) and Adobe Reader files (.pdf) so I need these programs on my computer.
So as a secondary question, is there a program for Macs better suited to open and view .wmv and .pdf files?
Please help with my download / free disk space problem, this is driving me crazy (for hours now). Thank you in advance for your assistance!!

Mac OS X can open pdf files fine without Adobe's bloatware, they open by default in TextEdit - the whole of OS X's display system is actually based around pdf technology so it's easy for the system to integrate pdf tools. There are alternative tools available on MacUpdate but for reading TextEdit is fine.
wmv files should be opened with the Flip4Mac Quicktime plugin, Microsoft no longer support their own player on Mac and even supply the F4M plugin from their own download pages.
For Stuffit files (which are thankfully much rarer these days) I'd use The Unarchiver instead of Allume's fat cat.
To fix the other problem you could try changing your download location in Safari preferences, General - it may be that the location you are downloading to has the problem. You can pick anywhere you like just to test it out.
