Safari will not fully open, cannot force quit...

Hi Guys,
Needing help with Safari (currently posting from firefox :()...
On saturday I tried to load up the A-Z list on QuickSilverScreen.com (particularly heavy page) and safari froze completely. left it for a few minutes, but nothing happened and i wasn't able to select anything on the screen, so i had to hold the power button to restart the computer.
when it powered back up i tried to load it again, but all that happened was the browser window opened, but nothing loaded and i was left with the spinning beach ball...and once again was unable to force quit.
things i've tried:
- downloading/re-installing safari
- deleting the history manually
- removing the .plist file from the library and re-starting (onto desktop, at advice of apple tech support)
- when re-starting P, R, Cmd, Alt to clear something...
none of these have worked....anyone got any ideas?

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Check to see how much free disk space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
If disk space isn't the issue, try logging into another user account and try Safari there.
Also, go to ~/Library/Safari and move the Downloads.plist file to the Trash. Try relaunching Safari in the effected account.

July 18,2011 AOL toolbar update install. I cannot open Firefox to uninstall the update or the toolbar because everytime I open Firefox it freezes and jams up. I have to shut down my computer as it will not even respond to force quit command. I cannot read my mail (aol) or access my bookmarks all for work.

Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
You should be able to uninstall that AOL toolbar extension while running in the Firefox SafeMode.

  • Windows 8 Adobe Reader will not fully open a pdf compiled with several pdf's into one - why?

Windows 8 Adobe Reader will not fully open a pdf compiled with several pdf's into one - why?

    Hi Michael,
“AdbeRdr11003_en_US.exe” is the download installed on our CEO’s new Windows 8 laptop.  It is a Dell XPS Re: Windows 8 Adobe Reader will not fully open a pdf compiled with several pdf's into one - why? Dell XPS 13" .  It has a full install Windows 8 Professional for its’ Operating System.
I’ll attempt to attach the file in question.  The file opens fine on our Windows 7, and XP computers (with  the proper Adobe Reader on each).
Our CEO says there is a message that comes up saying he needs Adobe Flash.  I’m attempting to find out whether or not he is trying to open it the ‘Metro’ view, or the ‘Desktop’ view – no answer yet.
If your system strips the attachment, let me know, and I’ll upload the file to an ftp site {if necessary}.

  • Recently my itouch will not fully open articles from the yahoo home page.  The article starts to open but as I scroll down the page there are blacked out and whited out sections.  Te "reader" option opens the full article.

I can look at the yahoo home page and open the links to articles, but the articles do not fully open unless the reader option is available and I use it.  So far this has happened only from yahoo or some links emailed to me.  I have done a hard reset but not a restore.

    - Double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 3G 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    - Next try going to Settings>Safari and Clear Cookies, Data and History
    - Have you looked at the previous discussions listed on the right side of this page under the heading "More Like This"?
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Address Book Opens Automatically and will not close (even with Force Quit)

The address book automatically opens at times and I cannot close it. Even with a force quit, I cannot close it. It takes up over 80% of CPU cycles when it opens automatically. Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks
    Robby

This is happening to me too. Has occurred on MBP 17" about six or seven times over the past couple of weeks. Have not been able to replicate it. But recently suspect that it may be related to auto syncing and/or syncing my iPhone 3G.
    Anyone else have an idea?

  • MB Pro 13" 10.6.8 Will not shut down after force quit everythin

    MB Pro 8,1 OS 10.6.8
Computer froze while Sophos Anti-Virus was updating. I force-quit everything. Finder would not restart. Used the Shut Down command from the apple menu, everything went well until I reached the background-picture-only stage of shutdown. It froze there and the power button is inop. Shows options to shut down or restart, but will do neither.
    IDEAS?

Sometimes after an update, you may have to wait awhile for it to shut down. The other day I was about to force mine to quit after waiting around 2-3 minutes. Finally it shutdown. After rebooting, it's working fine now.
You maybe just didn't give it enough time to finish what it was doing before shutdown.

  • Keep getting deleted emails back and mail will not close, have to force quit

i have 4 emails that will not stay deleted.I will delete them and as soon as i reopen my mail they come back. Its as if they never left. Then i can't close my mail.i have to force quit. I have read of other problems close to mine and tried there solutions with no success.I do not know if my setting in pref. are correct or not. This problem is not allowing me to recieve new emails i just keep getttting these same 4 back time after time. very frustrating.

    You're welcome.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
In order to fix the problem, we'll have to re-create Envelope Index. The thing is, Mail may choke on those messages while re-creating the index, so either be prepared for that or perform optional steps 1 and 3:
    1. (Optional, but recommended). Assuming this is a POP account, in the Finder go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/, and identify the *.emlx files associated with the troublesome messages. Viewing the *.emlx files as List in the Finder showing the creation/modification date may help. Just identify them; do not get rid of them yet (you must quit Mail first).
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. (Optional, but recommended). Move to the Trash the troublesome *.emlx files found in step 1.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    5. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    6. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate Deleted Messages.mbox, and move it to the Trash. I assume there is nothing to be preserved there.
    7. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Mail will not close without a "Force Quit"

    Dear Friends,
My iMAC OS 10.5.4 mail program has malfunctioned ever since I opened it to access mail via my e-mail service provider during which time the power failed. After power was restored, the mailboxes of other accounts on the computer continue to function normally as does my mac.com account on the same Mail program. Now when I open the Mail program the spinning wheel on my internet services account continues to spin and my mail program will only close when I use the Force Quit command. Opening the mail program on other accounts causes no problem. I have reset my preferences, used the utility program, reset the internet service provider mail settings and rebooted the computer without success. Any ideas?

Many others have the same problem. Please see this thread for some potential remedies. For the record, none of them have worked for me. Please post if you find a solution that does work.

  • Quicktime  will not fully open!

This apparently just began a few days ago; when I try to open Quicktime the opening dialog box shows up and "loading" shows at the bottom. However, it just STAYS that way; never fully opens! I can still use the application; open video files etc...
    Can anyone help with this?
    TIA!

    QuicktimeKirk:
Thanks for your fast response! Here's what I discovered: for the past week, during boot-up, I've been getting an unusual dialog box that states something like "cannot,,,,,(don't remember the rest of the statement)", and provides a choice of either "work offline" or "connect". I'd been choosing "work offline" because I didn't know where the dialog box was coming from. This morning I chose "connect". When I called up Quicktime, it enabled quite nicely!
Can you provide any help with why all of a sudden this has been occurring?
As well, what does "Turn off the "Show Content Guide at Launch" in the QuickTime Player preferences. " actually accomplish?
    TIA!

  • My old iMovie is gone dumb and will not fully open

I was just ready to burn my movie to a disc and iMovie (Old Clapboard version) went haywire. HELP!

I don't know what version of iMovie you are using, nor the Mac OS X version (that's always helpful when posting questions).
However, usually when iMovie has the type of problem you mention, it's advisable to firstly trash the preference file. Here's how to go about it for iMovie '11 on Mountain Lion (similar methods apply for other versions):
Go to your Home folder <your user name>/Library/Preferences (NOT the Library folder at the top level in Macintosh HD). Similar to Lion, on Mountain Lion (10.8.3), the Home Library folder will be hidden (unlike pre-Lion OS X versions). To access it, click and hold down Go in the Finder menu bar, then press and hold down the Option key on the keyboard - the Library folder will appear in the drop down list. Slide the pointer down to Library and, as you release the pointer, the folder will open in Finder. Now you can navigate to the Preferences folder.
In your user Library/Preferences folder, locate a file named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist". With iMovie closed, drag this file to the Desktop. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh preference file with the default settings (this happens in the background as iMovie is loading).
If iMovie now opens and appears to be working properly, you can change the default settings in the menu item "IMovie > Preferences", as desired. Also, it's now safe to drag the old preference file to the Trash. Trashing the file will not harm any existing Events or Projects.
Note that these instructions are for iMovie '11 (currently version 9.0.9). For users on earlier versions, the preference file has a different but similar name. For example, for iMovie '09 (that's version 8.0.6) the file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Earlier versions may or may not have a number in the name, for example, "com.apple.iMovie.plist"
If this doesn't fix the problem with iMovie crashing, please come back as I have another possible solution to offer.

  • Safari not responding. Cannot force quit. Prevents system Shut-down.

From the console I am receinving this message:
    12-03-15 12:38:42 PM    [0x0-0x36036].com.apple.Safari[332]    2012-03-15 12:38:42.511 PluginProcess[335:903] Incompatible applications: app=com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess, targetApp=com.apple.Safari

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Indesign CS5 will not fully open. All other CS5 Applications work fine.

I bought the student CS5 a few months ago, and havent needed indesign until recently. But when I got to open I select document (have tried other options with same result) file opens and I automatically get the spinning wheel of death. This never ends, and has continued for over an hour. So, I cant use Indesign at all.
Is there something I can do? I am completely updated and do so regularly.
    A un/reinstal of Indesign?
    Thanks for the help,

Impossible to tell without more info. Programs not opening when double-clicking their associated files can have all sorts of causes from trivial to complicated. Does the program actually launch when you open it directly? If so, can you open docs from within the program? What system do you use?
