Safari window not resizing

I am running Safari 5.1.9 on OS X 10.6.8.  For the last few days, Safari windows always open at exactly the same size, and there is nothing I can do to resize them.
The resize button in the bottom right corner doesn't respond.  The green maximise button on the top left doesn't do anything.
I have tried:
* restarting
* forcing Safari to open links in a new window
* emptying Safari's cache
* resetting Safari
* trashing Safari's preferences
* turning off all plugins
* trashing com.apple.windowserver.plist
* starting Safari in 32-bit mode
* beating my head slowly against the screen
This seems to be a problem only with one user.  When I switch to another user, Safari behaves itself very well.
My system software is up to date.
Any ideas?

Try deleting the cache this way. Might make a difference.
In the effected account, open a Finder window. From the menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
Type of copy paste the following:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari and try resizing the window.

  • How to make screenshot/jpg/pdf of ENTIRE long Safari window (not just visible part)?

I want to get a "screenshot" (i.e. an image in any format -- PNG, JPG, PDF, whatever) of a looooooooong Safari window diplaying a Web page that entends far below the bottom of the visible screen area and has to be scrolled down to see all of it.
I know about the standard screenshot keyboard tricks in 10.6 -- Command-shift-4, Command-shift-4 then spacebar/click, Command-shift-3, etc. But not any of them allow the user to get a screen shot of the entirety of a long/deep window -- they only capture what is visible on the screen.
Also, another trick people often mention is to "print" (command-P) the Safari page, but instead of sending it to a printer choose "Save as PDF." Brilliant -- except that for some reason I've never been able to "print" a Safari page -- as soon as I hit the command-P keystrokes in Safari, I immediately get a spinning beachball that will only go a way with a force-quit of Safari. This has always been true on this computer (MacBook Pro) -- not sure if it's a common bug or if it's just an eccentricity of my particular machine. Either way, that option is off the table because "printing" is impossible with my Safari.
I also searched around for various third-party freeware applications, and despite a lot of grandiose promises, none of them actually was able to capture an entire window including portions not currently visible on the screen.
I did find a commercial application called SnapWeb that does have the capability to do exactly what I want -- but it doesn't produce usable images in demo mode and requires $$$ to unlock and work properly, something I'm currently unwilling to pay for a simple one-use gimmick that simply must be part of the OS already.
    So my question is:
Is there any native way within the 10.6 OS that allows users to capture an entire long Safari window as an image file (not as a Web Archive, but as an image file composed of pixels), which includes the entirety of a Web page no matter how "long" it is, even if it extends far below the visible screen footprint?
And if there is no native way in 10.6, if there a freeware/shareware application/widget/plugin/whatever which does the same thing?
I already know about a commercial software that does it (SnapWeb), so I don't need more recommendations for paid apps. And I know that I can laboriously construct a JPEG by hand with Photoshop by taking a screenshot of the visible window, scrolling down a little, taking another screenshot, etc. etc., and then
"stitching" them together. Yeah, it's possible (and in fact is what I've done in the past), but it's a time-consuming hassle that shouldn't be necessary.
Help! I've wondered about how to do this for years, and have never yet found a satisfactory answer.

    Woo-hoo!
After fiddling with Paparazzi! for another 40 minutes, I finally deciphered (through trial-and-error) how to maneuver through its awkward user-interface to an extent that I was finally able to make it "work" -- at least work sufficiently for my purposes. And lo and behold, it does indeed have the capacity to capture a screenshot of an entire long Web page, including the portion not visible on the screen. In fact my first attempt was to experiment with this very page of our thread on Apple "Discussions" about how to solve this problem -- and I got Paparazzi! to save it as a jpeg!! The whole thread, top to bottom, exactly as on the screen, not re-formatted for printing. The final file size was 985 pixels wide by 4,204 pixels long (1.2mb).
I have since experimented with a couple other pages and had success with them as well.
HOWEVER, I can't guarantee that Paparazzi! will work with every page on the Web, because I think one of the problems when I first attempted to use it was that the page I was trying to get a screenshot of contained a lot of Flash elements and other data-heavy widgets, and I think those messed up Paparazzi!'s memory or overwhelmed it or something. But perhaps such huge and problematic pages are rare enough to not be much of an issue using Paparazzi! under normal circumstances.
So, I'll consider this problem "solved," and give user "jsd2" a "This helped me" star, since even though I already had Paparazzi! he encouraged me to revisit it.
And for the record to help those who might stumble on this thread in the future seeking a solution to the same problem:
The freeware program to get is called "Paparazzi!" and is available directly on the developers site here:
    http://derailer.org/paparazzi/
Also, note that the current version only works with 10.6.8 or later, but if you have a previous version of the Mac OS, the developer helpfully maintains an archive of older releases that work with older OS versions -- you can access the old (and new) versions here:
    http://derailer.org/paparazzi/downloads
It's also available for free download on various popular third-party sites, like:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15966/paparazzi!
Be warned that Paparazzi! does not have a very intuitive user interface, nor a user manual, so be patient with it and you should be able to figure out how to make it work.
If you want another application that also does the trick and which has a simpler and better user experience, but you don't mind paying money to buy it, you can purchase and download "SnapWeb" on its developer's site here:
    http://www.tribalmedia.com/bts/snapweb/snapweb.html
And if anybody seeing this in the future knows whether or not there is a native way to capture entire Web pages built in to 10.6, please post the info here. Thanks!

  • Safari window not filling the screen when launched

I posted this question in the Safari forum and after a week of waiting and numerous bumps, it went unanswered and completely ignored so I thought I'd post it here. Basically what I am trying to do is have the Safari windows automatically fill the screen so that the scroll bar is at the *extreme* right side of the screen, but it always comes just short of that. The reason why this is important is I want to be able to make one quick swipe of my mouse to the right side of the screen and have the cursor end up over the Safari window's scroll bar. But the windows never open up like that, they open up just short of filling the screen so when I move my mouse to the side, it overshoots the scroll bar which is annoying because I have to drag it there manually every time. How do I fix this?

Here is how I want it. Notice the scroll bar with no space to its right.
But here is what it ends up doing. Notice there is now a tiny bit of space to the right of the scroll bar. This tiny space forces me to be careful with the mouse cursor and will not allow me to freely swipe the mouse cursor to the right or it will overshoot the scroll bar. Of course, I can drag the window back to the spot every time I open a new window, but that gets very annoying.

  • Application Catalog window not resizing

    Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is an SCCM or h/w tablet issue. On a Lenovo Helix 3698 tablet when I open SCCM 2012 SP1 Application Catalog I have to scroll way over to the right to see Category and Requires Approval columns and the INSTALL button even with the screen
maximized. But this is the only app that does this - every other app and MS tool resizes to the window so I am not scrolling all over the place. And On a desktop in the same SCCM site the Application Catalog window resizes itself just fine.
Has anyone seen this and know how to resolve it?
    Rhonda J. Layfield

    Hi,
I think this might be caused by browser.
Please try to open the Application Catalog using another browser.
Try to turn add-ons off in Internet Explorer.
If the step 2 not works, please try to reset the IE.
    Best Regards,

  • When I open a new window in FFox7, how can I make it automatically appear exactly on top of the previous window -- not resized, not shifted, but directly on top?

I used to set Firefox to full screen; but my new monitor is too big to do that. So I sized the Firefox window to the size I want, and I carefully centered it (using a tape measure to get it as close to dead center as possible).
But everytime I open a new window, it appears shifted slightly to the right (I think that's called cascading, but I'm not sure). While some might like this feature, I prefer it open exactly on top of the previous window; and it's a pain to have to shift the new window manually every time I open one.
How do I set Firefox to open new windows right on top of the parent window (and the same size), covering it up completely?
    Thanks,
    Dafydd abHugh

Well, then isn't there some way to induce Firefox to give Windows parameters that make it open the fershlugginer window in the *same* position, instead of an offset position?

  • Merge two full-screened safari windows' bug under lion

    Hi there,
After installed lion, i found an obviously bug in safari.
    1. Open safari, enter full-screen mode.
    2. Creat a new safari window (not a new tab), then it will moved into a other full-screen automaticlly.
    3. Click in menu bar : window>merge all windows.
    4. And here you go, two widows will be merged into one full-screen without the 'quit full-screen mode' buttom, and the other full-screen 'desktop' will be blank with only background. And the mission control died also XD

  • Cannot resize safari window

i can't resize the safari window by hovering over the bottom right corner of the window. I am working on a Macbook Pro and Yosemite.

When you hover over the corner do you not see the cursor change to a slanted heavy line with arrows at each end? Do you then click down and then resize the window?

  • Javascript Bookmark to resize Safari Windows

Despite searching all over, I could not easily find how to keep Safari from opening new windows that were just a bit off on the left or the right sides of the screen. I had read tips about making a new window, resizing it and then closing it. Sure enough, the next new window would open with that size and position. But open a 2nd new window and Safari would position it a little bit to the right, thus leaving the scroll bars slightly off the right side of the screen.
So I tried to find a javascript to solve this problem. Nothing did exactly what I wanted, so I have customized what I found and the following works for me:
Step 1) Save any webpage as a bookmark to the Bookmarks Bar (Click "Bookmarks" then "Add Bookmark...", OR Click Apple-D, then choose "Bookmarks Bar", "Add").
Step 2) Open "Bookmarks" "Show All Bookmarks", then choose "Bookmarks Bar" on the left under "COLLECTIONS".
Step 3) Find the bookmark you added in Step 1 and change the Bookmark's name to "Resize Window to Fill screen" or whatever you want (click once on the name and after a delay click a second time, then type).
Step 4) Change the bookmark's address to "javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(1440,screen.availHeight);" (click once on the bookmark's address and after a delay click a second time, then type or copy and paste what is inside the quotation marks above).
Step 5) In any window, click Apple-1 and the window will resize!
Note: I have a 17" iMac. For different size screens, just play around with the number "1440" in the javascript above. Make it larger or smaller until it is the exact size you want. Also, if you add new bookmarks to the Bookmarks bar, it may change the keyboard shortcut number for this "Resize Window" bookmark. You can always drag to reorder the bookmarks. The top ones will have keyboard shortcuts "Apple-1", "Apple-2", etc.
    Hope this helps someone else!

This helped me, and thanks again!!

  • How do I set Safari to automatically resize new window when opening a link?

Here is the scenario. I have one Safari window open, I click a link that is on that page, I have Safari set to open a new window (not a new tab) so that is what it does. It opens a new window from that link, but the new window is too small. It is about 1/4 the size of a window that fills up the screen. How do I set up Safari so that when I open a link in a window, it automatically resizes the new window to fill the screen?
    Thanks much,
    Paula Jo

    Hi Paula Jo
Next time a new window automatically opens, resize it to the desired size by dragging the lower right corner. Then, click on the red button in the upper left to close it.
Now, select a link in your existing browser window to open the 2nd window. It ought to be the same size as what was set previously.
Let me know if that works.

Resizing the browser window is considered _very_ rude, if it
    will work
at all - modern browser prevent such abuse of JavaScript.
You should more concentrate on the content and the usability
    of the site
to attract visitors. Keeping the layout flexible is usually
    the best way
to go. But even if it has to be a fixed-width layout, you
    shouldn't mess
with the user's browser settings, but for example center the
    entire site
in the browser. Solutions for that are posted here every
    second day.

  • Safari option to resize image to fit window?

This item has come up here before, but seems to always fizzle out. Did anyone ever find a plugin for Safari that would resize images so that they fit in the browser window?
The problem is when you try to view pictures that are larger than the screen size, I would like to be able to have my Safari browser automatically resize them to fit the screen. MS Internet Explorer has this feature and I have gotten used to it!

After uploading the Demo.jpg results in a table with the entire image placed in het first cell. After placing the class code in the CSS inline property I expected to see the result as is shown in the Table whith background image  demo. For some reason this does not work (the image is no longer visible).
Can anybody tell me how to achieve my goal?
This is a workaround. What's your real goal? Why do you want to do this?
What browser(s)/version(s) are you using? All current browser versions have support for CSS3 background sizing which is the proper way to do this.

  • Hi,I am unsure if I have a safari or modem problem. It only happens when I use my macbook pro, my HP windows is fine. Internet crashes on modem and then a message that safari is not connected. I don't know where to start sorry I am not technical at all.

Hi there, my internet is crashing everytime I use my macbook pro/safari it happens roughly every 2 mins, it can happen on any website.
I am not technical at all and I am at a total loss of where to start with this. I did a bit of research on the internet but no luck in finding any
    help.
Basically I am not sure if it is a modem of safari problem. I have no problems when using my HP on without windows explorer on the internet.
I am working wireless ADSL 2 - Bigpond - 2 Wire 2701 HGV-W and a macbook pro purchased around 5 months ago. Since the purchase date
I have had problems with internet.
Safari brings up a page you are not connected to the internet. I then look at the modem and DSL and internet lights are both flickering and or/off.
They then re-set themselves. I then have to re-set preferences on safari and quit and restart.
I have also tried using with cable into mac and modem and no difference.
I can only figure that maybe Safari is not compatible with the modem? could this be the case?
Thanks for reading and any assistance would be appreciated.

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)

  • Safari will not open a window when "open at login" is enabled

I seem to be having this issue where I can't seem to get a Safari window to open at login. I've tried many many settings from disabling the pop-up blocker to application permissions, it just doesn't want to open a window upon login. The icon in the dock has the indicator light that it is open, but no window appears.
I had no issues with this up until the past few updates that were done. I don't have any 3rd party plug-ins installed and it happens on both my Macbook Pro and Mac Mini and it is not profile specific.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
