Safari won't open anything.  Firefox works fine.

Safari won't open anyuthing.  Firefox works fine.  Is something happenng at the Safari end?

Sue --
Are you really still on 10.5.1?
Tell us your exact OS, the version of Safari you're running, how long this has been happening, etc.  Is it actually crashing?  Does it open up with your Home Page?  Then what happens when you want to see a site?

not sure what could be causing this...i tried what some other posts on the same issue suggested, ie opened safari in an another account [ it opened ] also tried getting rid of possible corrupted cookies ... no help at all ,,, does anybody have any ideas? could this be some problem with a software update i did [ i am wondering if downloading updates that are really for the new macs will screw up the older macs like mine ]

Since the problem doesn't appear to be associated with iTunes, you'll probably get quicker responses if you ask in the Safari forum.

  • Safari won't open. Firefox disappeared, only question mark. Mail doesn't have content. Time Machine won't turn on because sparse bundle is in use. Please help.

I had this issue about a month in a half ago and it was fixed by a local technician. I no longer have access to him and I really need some help. The issues are as follows:
    Safari will not open.
Firefox disappeared. No icon, just a question mark in it's place.
When I open mail it shows I have new messages but the content is blank.
Time Machine cannot turn on because sparse bundle is in use.
New files that were made are no longer available. It's almost as if the computer jumped back in time.
The Mac Mini is running Mavericks 10.9.5

I'll assume that you have some way of connecting to this website from the affected machine. If not, ask for other instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch Safari. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Safari won't open anything.  help!!!?

Hi there. My name is Shelli. My husband and I recently went from dial-up to slow dsl. When we did, Safari would no longer open any pages, no matter what. It will not even open the apple store. Can anyone help me? I have emptied the cache, and I have tried resetting safari. I have also tried re-downloading Safari to see if that would work. Nothing has worked. I really need help. There are a lot of sites that I can't get to because I don't have Safari. Thanks, Shelli

    Shelli,
    welcome to Discussions!
The likely culprit is your proxy setting. Open "System Preferences" from the Apple menu. Click on the "Network" icon. Select the configuration you are using (could be Airport or Built-in Ethernet, depending on your connection type), then select the tab "Proxies". If you see any proxy enabled, uncheck it. That should do the trick.
Note you may have to authenticate (click on the lock on the bottom of the window and enter your password) if the options are grayed out.
Sounds complicated, but it's not if you try.
    Please post back. Good luck!

  • IPod causes PC Crashing, won't do ANYTHING, but works fine unplugged

OK, so today I tried booting up iTunes to put some new music on my iPod I had just ripped off of a CD. I clicked on the shortcut, and nothing ever came up. Same thing was happening with Spybot, and a re-install fixed that, so I reinstalled iTunes. Same problem. So I tried installing it to my C:\ instead of my second HDD. Same problem. Also, whenever I go into My Computer
and click on the J:\ (My Ipod) it just freezes. (This same problem has always been happening, but occasionally only failing when I tried transferring files) So then, while waiting for iTunes to boot and My Computer to unfreeze, I unplugged my iPod to listen to it since I was very bored indeed. BOOM, all of a sudden, 'My Computer' unfroze, and iTunes instantly popped up.
So, iTunes and everything works fine now, providing the iPod is unplugged. If I plug it in while iTunes is running, it does nothing for about 4 seconds, then freezes, and of course, unfreezes as soon as I unplug the iPod.
Any ideas as to why this is happening? Oh yeah, and this is likely the cause of most if not, ALL the problems my PC has been having since I built it. I hasn't frozen all day today since I unplugged the iPod, and remember that my iPod has been plugged in from when I first posted my newly built machine until I discovered this today.

I am experiencing the same problem with my iPod classic 120GB. When I Connect it to my computer for the first time since I started it, it works fine. The iPod is recognized by the computer and iTunes. When I eject the iPod thru the iTunes interface and reconnect it again (without rebooting my computer) the computer freezes. When I start iTunes again, nothing happens until I remove the iPod from the computer (it is stil displaying 'connected'). Removing the iPod unfreezes the computer. I think it is a software problem but I can't find a solution on the internet for such a problem.
    Can someone help?

  • Firefox won't open (though Explorer works fine) and I can't uninstall the program.

The problem started with Firefox saying it couldn't display the webpage. Explorer worked, so I knew it wasn't my internet. I checked, and I am not using a proxy, so that's not the issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, but then when I clicked on Firefox nothing at all happened. Now I can't uninstall Firefox. I also tried running Firefox in safe mode, and that doesn't work either.

The OP asked this question 9 months ago and 850 other people have this problem. Why hasn't Firefox Support answered this question or commented?

  • Can't open Pdfs in firefox, works fine in Safari. Please help?

Can't open Pdfs in firefox, works fine in Safari. Please help?

    This resolved my problem
I checked and my Firefox is doing (or not doing in this case)  the same thing.  There seems to be a problem with the Snow Leopard and the Adobe browser plugin.  I was able to get Firefox working again by going to Firefox > Preferences > Applications and switching all to Adobe settings to "Use Adobe Reader (default)" instead of the plugin.  Then I went to Tools > Add-ons... > Plugins and disabled the Acrobat plugin.  Restarted Firefox and now pdf worked.

for the last 6 months my mac is crashing all the time. I think it is safari because firefox works fine. Any suggestions?

What is crashing, is it just Safari or is the entire computer freezing (if that's what you mean by crashing)? If the latter, are you saying it only happens when Safari is open?
You need to explain with more detail just what is happening and when.
Do you get a message to restart?

  • Safari won't open since I installed Firefox.

Safari won't open since I installed Firefox. I keep getting a window that asks me if I want to "Reopen" Safari in a large window that includes error messages, lots of them. I click on "Reopen" and a smaller window opens up with the same option to "Reopen", but Safari just goes back to the large window again; the one with all the error messages.

Quit the application. Force quit if necessary.
Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

    1. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
    2. Select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data...
    and confirm. Test.
    3. If the above steps don't resolve the problem, please describe it in more detail.

  • Safari won't open after grand kids were here today.  Think they were on Netflicks. Tried to drag another from applications but did not work. Any suggestions. I'm not a whiz at computers.

Safari won't open this evening after grand kids were here. Believe they were on Netflix and tend to use Firefox as the server. I went to applications and trid to drag another to the dock, but wouldn't. Couldn't find it in trash either. I'm assuming it is gone. I can use chrome on my desktop and Safari on my IPad which I am doing now. I'm not a computer wiz and could use your suggestions. I updated to snow leopard a few months back. Thanks.

Firefox is a browser, not a server. A browser like Safari.
If you see the Safari app icon on your Desktop, drag that alias icon to the Trash. Same for Firefox.
If you can't locate the Safari app, click the Spotlight icon (magnifying glass icon) top right in your screen.
Type Safari in the search field.
Hopefully that will tell you where Safari is.

my photos won't "load" - it has worked fine for at least two years, but suddenly now when I plug in the chip, iPhoto opens up as usual, but the window just says "loading photos",  and the little wheel keeps on spinning - can anyone help me?? I am new here. I need to get it working again because we're about to go on a trip!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I have Windows 8.1 and Adobe CS6 - acrobat just stoped working, won't open anything won't print to pdf. HELP!

Please help me!! I have Windows 8.1 and Adobe CS6 creative Suite. Adobe Acrobat x just quit, It won't open anything and it wont print to PDF. I need this for work!

Typically, the repair is done from the Control Panel>Programs & Features. In the future, try that route. Glad you found something that worked. When you do come to the forums for help, you may not get an immediate response, but may have to wait for someone familiar with your issue happens to check the forum, possibly after work. In any case, glad you have a working product again.

  • Safari won't open a page

    Hey!
I've got a big problem: My Safari wasn't able to open a page. So I decided to uninstall it. When I installed it again I still had the same problem as before:
Safari won't open a page. Even not google.de or google.com
Firefox works perfect, it's only Safari...
Is there anything wrong with the Internetoptions? I'm connected wireless with an airportExtreme since two weeks. I don't now if it was working before...
    Anyone knows a solution? : )
    Thank you...
    Björn

ok, i've found the problem myself... The app piclens made the problem... now it's working fine : )

  • Safari update to 5.1.5, on snow leopard, now safari won't open any web page.

Just installed Safari update to 5.1.5 and now Safari won't load any web page. Running snow leopard on an iMac.  How do I fix, or revert to previous version of Safari that did work, keeping in mind, can't access internet on that computer since Safari won't load a web page (Firefox, Chrome, Opera have never worked on that computer, although Firefox worked fine until I upgraded OS to snow leopard).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
