Safari won't open from dock after upgrading to leopard

I've upgraded from OS X 10.4.11 Tiger to OS X 10.5.2 Leopard with the upgrade DVD which arrived today and all the available Software Updates (which included a Safari update). No more Software Updates are available - I've checked.
Safari and Mail will now not open from the Dock. Neither will iChat, AddressBook, iDVD (which produces a pop-up saying it "quit unexpectedly" - it didn't appear to start at all), and iCal. Safari and Mail WILL open from my Applications folder thankfully. I haven't checked the other mentioned applications, except iDVD which does the same non-opening with pop-up from Applications too.
I have run permissions verification and permissions repair from Disc Utility on the Mac HD. I have run disc verification from there too and the result said the disc appears OK. Neither solved the Dock problem.
The icons in the Dock don't bounce or anything. They remain still and un-animated. I just get a pop-up message saying "You cannot use the application "Safari.app" with this version of Mac OS X". Which surprises me as it's a native Apple Mac application isn't it? Obviously it says "Mail.app" for mail, "iChat.app" for iChat etc.
I reinserted the Leopard installation DVD and installed all the applications from the Optional Install.mpkg folder, including Safari and Mail. This has made no noticeable difference: they still won't open from the dock. I have just noticed that an additional icon for Safari appears at the far (right hand) end of the dock when I open it from Applications. But it disappears when I close Safari, so no good for opening it.
It could be worse, I can actually open some of the applications from my Applications folder. But this is inconvenient and besides, it is supposed to work from the Dock.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Can anyone help me to solve it please?
I have backed-up (not using time machine - I backed-up before I upgraded). I hope to avoid having to erase and reinstall but I will IF that will solve this problem (and not cause any others
Help please. Thanks.

Hi
Dock icons are simply alias. The ones on your dock may be corrupted, especially since you can open Safari from the applications folder. To remove an icon, right click on it and select "remove from dock", or simply drag it off the dock, where it will disappear in a puff of virtual smoke.
Then, go to the Finder and single-click/hold any item you want on the dock. Drag it there.
Try Safari or the other apps again.
Specific to the Leopard upgrade, important any 3rd party items installed in your system are Leopard compatible, otherwise you'll have operational problems when using them.
One other thought. It is possible the Dock is corrupted, causing the problem. If the above does not resolve the problem, go to the Finder: Your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. There, move the com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db files to the desktop, then relaunch the Finder (hold down the option/command/esc keys to reveal the Quit Panel. Select the Finder>relaunch.

  • Safari won't open without restart after installing Yosemite

After I installed Yosemite, safari won't open from sleep mode without me restarting my computer.  Should I or can I uninstall Yosemite and reinstall or is there another fix?  Thank You for any help.

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.

  • MacBook Pro spontaneously wakes from sleep after upgrading to Leopard?

For some reason, after I upgraded to Leopard, then whenever I put my MacBook Pro to sleep, it spontaneously wakes up after some time (can be from a few minutes to an hour or two.) I don't know why this is happening, but I know for sure that it's related to Leopard since I put my laptop to sleep every night (it's in my bedroom) and after upgrading to Leopard, it started to just wake up a short while after putting it to sleep.
At first I thought it could be Time Machine, so I disconnected all my external drives, but that didn't seem to work.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
    Thanks in advance!

I have the same issue. Installed Leopard last night on my first-gen 1.83 MacBook. The next morning the Mac was a little slow in wanting to wake up. After that it stalled on transferring a large file from my G5 and I had to issue a reboot command via the shell to get it out of that. A few minutes later the computer locked up when trying to apple > tab through the application.
I put it to sleep after restarting the Mac from that freeze. A while later while walking out of the house I happened to glance at the Macbook and saw the apple glowing while the lid was shut and then it went back to sleep.
Tonight I put the Macbook to sleep on the way out to dinner. I noted that I had 84% of my battery left. A few hours later when I got home the MB was warm, the apple was glowing and I had 9% of my battery left.
Looks like there is some work to be done asap for 10.5.1

  • Safari won't load some images (after upgrade to Mavericks from Lion)

    Hi,
I've noticed that since I upgraded my OS from Lion to Mavericks, Safari won't load all images on certain websites.
I've tried loading the same pages on my daughter's MacBookPro (she upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks) and everything works just fine.
We cross checked the Safari preferences and everything is identical.
Below are two pictures, the first one taken from my computer, the second one from my daughter's. As you can see, in the first photo the image won't display, while it's been perfectly loaded in the second photo.
    Here's the website: http://blog.alice.tv/berengario/2013/11/16/trasmissione-su-arturo-tv/
I've tried opening the same page on Firefox, and all images are perfectly displayed.
    Could you please help me?
    Thank you for your support!
    Kind regards,
    Leo

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • ITunes won't open from dock or apps

When I click on the iTunes icon on the dock, it bounces once (sometimes twice), then stops bouncing and nothing opens. I tried opening from the application folder and nothing. I tried downloading the most recent version, but then I can't open the .dmg file in order to install (the files flashes like usual, but then nothing opens up).
It's not just iTunes acting like this-- Safari and iChat are acting the same way. Software Update won't open either. Other programs such as Firefox, quicktime, Word, etc, are fine.
My Norton Antivirus was expired and I downloaded an upgrade today-- but that .dmg file won't open either! I ran a virus scan anyway with the old Norton, and it didn't find anything.....
Things started acting up after I did a software update the other day. Now, when I plug in a memory stick or external hard drive (Lacie), they won't show up on the desktop, but if I restart with them already plugged in, they show up. The iTunes trouble started today when I restarted in order to access my external hard drive (it was fine this morning before I restarted!)
I think I covered all bases.... Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would first try to Repair Permissions under Disk Utility. If that doesn't help, you might to post over in the Tiger forum, as this is obviously more than an iTunes issue. You might also try logging in and launching an app *under a different user account*. That could help narrow down the cause of the problem.

  • Imovie won't open any projects after upgrading to yosemite

Can anyone help? I upgraded to yosemite and imovie 10.0.6 and now imovie won't open. IPhoto and Garageband open just fine. After clicking Imovie, it appears in the menu bar but all options from the drop down menus are grayed out. I cannot open any projects and there is no imovie window opening. I have tried deleting and reinstalling the program twice with the same result. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Apple introduced a new document architecture with Pages v5, that is not backwards compatible with Pages '09. With Pages v5.5.2 (Yosemite) installed, a simple double-click on a Pages '09 document will default open it in Pages v5. Once you save, or Pages autosaves this document, it is no longer directly compatible with Pages '09, without first exporting it to Pages '09 format. Pages v5 documents do not contain index.xml files, and Pages '09 documents do.

  • MP Navigator won't open from dock

I am using a Canon MP600 with MP Navigator as the scanning utility and cannot get it to open from the dock, only from spotlight or finder. I've got the latest drivers and software version however these were last updated last year. Has anyone any experience of this and if so, is it resolvable?

Hi - thanks for the suggestions. I tried both and unfortunately the icon still bounces in the Dock but won't open a window. Interestingly when I open immediately after from the Spotlight search, the message comes up that the scanner driver will be closed as it is being used by another application or not available. I checked using the Spaces key whether or not it was open but hidden but could not see anything. I'm at a loss now

  • IPhoto Won't Open from dock

My Iphoto icon is in the dock but when I double click on it, no bounce or anything. When I 2 finger tap on it I get "remove from dock", "open at login", "show in finder", & "open". When I choose one of those it does nothing. I looked in finder and there is not iphoto choice under applications. Looked in spotlight and can't find it there. When I look under finder in "pictures" I see my iphoto library there and when I try to open it I get there is no default application and I need to choose one. When I do there is no iphoto to choose. I can click on "pictures" in finder and see all my photos as JPEG's and open them in finder. When I choose an application to open with I can click on "photos" and see all my iphotos, events, last download etc. Please help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in the Applications folder and confirm that the iPhoto application is present. If it is then try the following: close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Safari won't open docx files after download

The "open safe files after download" button is checked.  I unchecked it, shutdown safari, rechecked it and it still isn't working.

How do I get that file type on the "safe to open" list?
I'm not sure there is any way to do that, and if there is, I wouldn't recommend it, because Word files are not necessarily safe to open -- they can include harmful macros. You can try the suggestion linked below, but I haven't tested it.

  • Can't open my JPEGS after upgrade to Leopard.

I upgraded to Leopard about a year ago. It has been great so far except for one problem. I had a bunch of photos from work all saved as JPEG's in a portable HD and another backup drive. Now I can't open then with any software (i.e. iPhoto or GIMP). When you look at the files on finder the are shaded (like they have been selected when you are going to move or copy) and when you click on the photo the following message comes up: "The item "????.JPEG is in use right now and can't be opened. Try again when the current task (such as moving, copying or emptying the trash) is complete". I have also gotten the message that the photos are in use by another program. I have tried multiple things including copying the files to other drives including the Mac. You can open them in other computers and even open them on quick look, but again no luck opening them with any program on my Mac.

I don't remember the version of tiger but always keep it updated with downloads. I ran DU and the postable disk is a FAT 32 formatted hard drive so it won't run. I did the other things that you said and the following cam up. The image file is called "axial drawing.jpg" stuff the I edited out has a question mark "?":

  • MacBook Pro won't wake from sleep after installing Snow Leopard

If my MacBook Pro is running while closed with an external display and I unplug it from the display it goes to sleep - as indicated by the white light and the front pulsing. If I then open the MacBook the display remains blank and it is completely unresponsive to any keys or track pad input.
The only thing it responds to at that point is holding the power button down until it powers down and then restarting - loosing all work in progress at that point.
Before installing Snow Leopard the Mac would wake reliably when opened from this state.

    Mike Doolin wrote:
I think I may have found the fix for this. My MacBook Pro was dying in its sleep every time (after installing Snow Leopard), whether it went to sleep automatically or I used a Hot Corner. I went into System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver and changed the screen saver to Flurry, and it works now. I had had it set to a folder containing a single .pct file that I had created.
Good advice Mike! When in doubt check the ScreenSaver settings.
Definitely seems that it has a problem with that pic... In my case, selecting any images instead of the default setting (no screensaver) seems to have cured my non waking issue on my early Macbook Pro in Snow Leopard.
My original problem was that no amount of trackpad input woke it, but the space bar did. The space bar seemed to wake it up with the previous Screen Saver setting. Now trackpad wakes it up (even from total sleep as well as screen saver), too. Might be nice to know about if this is an intended 'feature' as a security trick. Otherwise I consider this a bug.
My vote is that it's a bug.

  • Safari Would Not Open From Dock

After installing Leopard, it would open and a few seconds later it would quit. Then I only got the screen that asks if I want to "Report", "Relaunch" or "Ignore." If that happens to anyone else, try this. I trashed the Safari icon from the dock, and pulled the icon from the Apps into the dock and then it worked fine.

Did you do an upgrade? If so, the dock icon may have been the old Safari.

  • FYI-Apps crash from Dock after Upgrade?  Have u ever done Archive/Restore?

I have upgraded two Macs today. My MacBook Pro upgrade was flawless (so far). My new iMac upgrade went through everything fine, then every MacOS app I tried to launch crashed. This included Safari, Mail, iCal, Address Book, etc. After a while of research, I noticed that I could launch them from finder, just not from the Dock. After further research, I saw all of the Mac apps on the doc were pointing to the "Previous Systems\Previous System 1\Applications" folder created when I did an Archive and Restore on that box. I corrected all of the links, and all appears to be working fine now. Just an FYI to try to save some folks some time. I guess this is probably a bug, but once I found the source, it seemed to be an easy fix.
I just hope there is nothing else related to this that I haven't seen yet...we'll see. If you have done the Archive and Restore previously, it may be a good idea to get rid of the "Previous Systems" folder in the root before you do the upgrade.
I'm interested in hearing if other have experienced the same thing.

No violation is taking place, (please don't jump to conclusions). One program that I use everyday for my work has been through 4 or 5 upgrades that was done through downloads, and now that program is no longer supported or being sold for the Mac. Getting an install CD from the company is impossible and even if I could install the last version that I do have an install CD for, getting it upgraded to the latest working version would be impossible.
Of course, the other apps that are not working will be able to all be installed again after contacting the different vendors and downloading the programs again. Still a big hassle....
And I did try to reinstall one of them while I was still running SL and the installer, which required rosetta, would also crash and I was unable to reinstall. So I believe that there is more to my problem than having used Migration Assistant at one time.
