Safari won't open new pages from Google links

I'm a bit confused - I'm using Safari on my iMac and MacBook, both with OS 10.4.10, and want to open google links in new pages. This works fine on the MacBook, but not the iMac, even though I've checked the box "Open links from applications in a new window".
Do you think I need to reset Safari in some way?
Many thanks
Chris

...want to open google links in new pages. This works fine on the MacBook, but not the iMac, even though I've checked the box "Open links from applications in a new window".
That preference setting refers to opening links from other applications in a new window. For example, if you click on a link in a Word file displayed by Microsoft Word, or in an email displayed in the program Mail, the link will open in a new window in Safari.
To see the shortcuts for opening a link from a web page (e.g. Google) in a new window, go to Safari > Preferences, click on the Tabs section, and read the Command-key shortcuts listed at the bottom of the window. Exactly what those shortcuts are depends on your settings in the checkboxes above. (To see the difference, change some of the settings in the checkboxes and watch the shortcuts below change.)
I'm not sure what the difference is between the settings on your two Macs. I'd go over the preference settings to get an idea of why they're behaving differently.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari won't open a page

    Hey!
    I've got a big problem: My Safari wasn't able to open a page. So I decided to uninstall it. When I installed it again I still had the same problem as before:
    Safari won't open a page. Even not google.de or google.com
    Firefox works perfect, it's only Safari...
    Is there anything wrong with the Internetoptions? I'm connected wireless with an airportExtreme since two weeks. I don't now if it was working before...
    Anyone knows a solution? : )
    Thank you...
    Björn

    ok, i've found the problem myself... The app piclens made the problem... now it's working fine : )

  • Safari won't open any pages since I downloaded McScan Beta V

    I downloaded McScan's Beta version the other day from securemac. Since then, Safari won't open ANY pages at all, giving me the message, "Safari can't connect to server"
    "Safari can’t open the page “http://aol.com/” because it could not connect to the server “aol.com”.
    I dragged McScan to the trash, and still won't work. I also ran through the Safari Preferences, and made sure I had followed their suggestions, "”.Choose Preferences from the Safari menu and click Security. Make sure that the checkboxes to use plug-ins, Java, and JavaScript are selected and that the "Block pop-up windows" checkbox is not selected." Still no luck.
    Any idea how I can get Safari to work again?
    Thanks,

  • Safari won`t open private pages made in iweb

    Safari won`t open private pages made in iweb, but it works in Firefox! Why is this happening! It even works in internet explorer! But in Safari it doesn`t, it just can`t load the page, the login dialog doesn`t show up, it just stand there trying to load the page! Please help?

    Here is what finally worked for me based on a post I saw on another thread. Apparently the login.keychain file for the use is corrupted.
    Trash the "login.keychain" file located in the Keychains in the users Home folder.
    (Users/yourname/Library/Keychains/
    Then access the site once more. It now works as expected. You will need to authenticate the new keychain file and grant access when needed for the website to use your login keychain.

  • Won't open new page when I click bookmark, instead changes pages EVEN THO PREFERENCES SET TO OPEN NEW PAGES

    Firefox keeps on changing pages, even yanking minimized pages back onto the screen and changing them, even though I have Firefox preferences set to always open new pages to accommodate links on a page or bookmarks.
    I don't want Firefox to tamper with any pages, period. If I have a pages minimized, no way should Firefox be yanking that page up back onto the screen because it's "too lazy" to open up a new page to accommodate a bookmark or link clicked on.
    It's extremely aggravating to click a link on a page, get a new page then, when I click the page to close it I find no page underneath, indicating that Firefox had changed the original page rather than open up a new page automatically to accommodate the link, etc.
    What's the point of me in Firefox preferences setting it up for Firefox to open up new pages automatically when afterwards it doesn't?

    Perhaps try the add-on Tab Mix Plus. It has a feature that you can force every link to open in a new tab if you like:
    * http://tmp.garyr.net/help/#Links (description of options - see "Force to open in new tab")
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ (install page)
    I don't know whether it has any effect on bookmarks. You can open those in a new window by holding Shift or in a new tab by holding Ctrl when clicking.

  • TS3276 i am unable to open web pages from email links on my ipad

    I am unable to open web pages from email links on my ipad

    A few more details might help, if nobody else recognizes this.
    What happens when you try to open the links?
    Can you post an example of a link that doesn't work?
    Is there any particular source for the mail with the (bad) links, or is mail from all sources failing?
    If you happen to know it, what's the format of the mail message?  (Maybe the message is an image?)
    Do the embedded links work as expected from an OS X system running Mail.app, or some system and some other other mail client?
    To view the link in iOS: if you press on and hold your finger on an embedded link in most contexts, iOS will show a pop-up with the link contents, and will offer to copy it.  You can use that to acquire and post the link.  If pressing and holding on the link doesn't offer the pop-up, the format of the link itself may not be valid, or it might not really be a link.

  • Safari Won't Open Certain Pages

    There are some pages that Safari won't open... just hangs. Here are the details:
    1. 2 sites affected - https://www.airbnb.ca/  -  https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction!input.action
    2. Effects both 2012 MacBook Pro Retina and 2009 Mac Pro both completely updated
    3. Opens fine with Chrome
    4. Reset the browser settings and no extensions in use other than 1 password
    5. They open fine in iPad Safari
    6. Reset pram
    Appears to be a Safari issue obviously.

    Bee: Sorry for that. I'm obviously not talking about you at all. I'm a person who always tries to be very helpful. If I clicked in a thread and the guy posted a couple links saying that they wouldn't work it wouldn't even dawn on me to not click the link and tell the guy if they worked for me or not. Ultimately, a whack of people read the thread and couldn't be bothered to click and report--yet those people I'm sure will be the first to take the help. I'm not impatient about my issue here... honestly. Sorry if I came off unnapreciative in advance and was owly. If there's anything that I can ever do to help you I will anytime.
    Klaus: Effects both 2012 MacBook Pro Retina and 2009 Mac Pro both completely updated ... what else were you looking for?
    (for product specifics, I updated them after the post and could be the reason why they're not showing up. I listed them in the thread anyway. Maybe 2 times a charm??)

  • Safari 6 won't open new page on system startup

    I have Safari set to 1) open at login, 2) open with a new window, 3) open new windows with the homepage, and 4) homepage is mail.google.com.
    When I start up the system (rMBP), Safari launches—as is evident by the blue light underneath it in the Dock—but does not open a new window. When I click on the Dock icon, it luanches a new window with mail.google.com, as normal.
    I have seen https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4136348 and related; I don't have Glims, I have the latest version of ML (10.8.2 supp v1), "close windows when quitting an application" is checked. If I check "reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown dialog box, it does just that—but I don't want to do that, I want Safari to open my homepage and nothing else.
    Any ideas?

    One way to accomplish that is to quit Safari before shutting down the computer.
    Best.

  • May Safari won´t open some pages

    I´m on the edge to become a Mac-fan after being a long time PC (windows) user. Mac is supereasy to use. There are only some irritating details concerning my Safari. Some web-pages won´t open. Not only don´t the page open, but the page reminding me of the obvious (the page won´t open) opens slowly.
    When this happens, I´m forced to use my laptop PC - NO PROBLEMS OPENING ANYTHING ON THE NET.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    "Spank me" no thankyou. ;~) "S" is pretty far from "T" but I will assume that's a typo.
    ISP 4.2.2.1 leads us further afield. Hmmmnnnn.
    I have 4.2.2.2 added also. I had no idea from the above that we might be dealing w an ISP issue.
    I would contact your internet provider, mine in Earthlink, and see if you can get their server URLs. Or:
    At Network Preferences, how many locations do you have? I have 4 of which I regularly use 2. Their servers seem to overload at pretty much random times.
    Do an automatic set up, or retry some of the prior arrangements. Adding 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 will do no harm.
    If this is where the real prob is, give yourself a virtual Green Star for really good research. At least 3 "attaboys."
    If you would come back and sprinkle some Helpful Gold (2) @ 5 pts or Green (1) at 10 pts Stars, that would be nice. (See the bottom of Apple's emails re new posts to thread.)

  • Safari won't open some pages

    I manage a small network of Macs in my otherwise PC company. We operate behind a firewall. Recently, I've noticed a strange thing where Safari will suddenly not load a page, well within a site. The status bar will show "contacting server", then "1 byte loaded". At this point, the progress bar within the address bar will slide over to the right & disappear, as if the page loaded, but the page is blank. Occasionally, reloading a few times will work. Sometimes copying the address into a new window will work. More often, you need to copy the address, quit & restart Safari & paste the address in to load the page. This happens will about any site, including Apple's. I've tried resetting Safari, clearing cashes & cookies, etc.. I've tried Cocktail & Onyx as well. I notice this more on my eMac running 10.4.8, and have seen it on other Macs that I manage.
    G5 & eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I have corrected the problem, sort of. I was using Netbarrier, and have completely disabled it. I'm still using the built in firewall of OS-X, plus "little snitch." This was after I had deleted every imaginable preference file, cache, etc etc- the problem was most likely something with Netbarrier. I hope to one day be able to use NetBarrier again without this problem (affecting only a small fraction of web pages, including Google Mail, and many others that require one to sign in). Till then, I'm just happy I can use those sites again!

  • How can I open new window from a link in another window?

    Hello everyone!
    Can anyone help me with my problem. I need to open a child window from a link in the mother/master window. Actually, the link that would open the child window is directed to a servlet that retrieves data from the database. The data will then be displayed in the child window. I don't how to open a new window with the data retrieve (thru the servlet) displayed in it. I'm using model 2 architecture (Servlet-JSP).
    Thank you in advance and more power!

    Or you can use something like this,
    Click and in your test()
    <script language="javascript">function test()
          document.form_name.target="_blank";
          document.form_name.action="/test/servlet/LoginServlet";
          document.form_name.method="post"
          document.form_name.submit();
    }</script>
    Here "/test" is your application context path.
    If you want to open the link in the named window then use,
    document.form_name.target="your_own_name";

  • Won't open homepage on open, won't open web pages from the menu 'open new window', Can't open menu button

    Ok, since update to version 31.0, I have been having some problems.
    I have tried doing everything stated in the support page about resetting, reinstalling, safe mode, restarting pc etc.
    First problem, when I open Firefox no web page loads. It just says New Tab and a blank white page. If I press the home button I am taken to my homepage which is google.
    Second problem, when I right click on a link and the menu pops up, if I click open in new window, a new window opens but it just says New Tab with a blank page and no URL information, just blank.
    Third problem, the Open Menu button just doesn't work at all. You can click all you like, that thing is not opening.
    I am really stuck as to what to do. I have only been using Firefox for about a month and t was good until these problems. If I can't resolve it, I will have to use another browser as it is really annoying.
    I am using Windows 8.1 by the way and have scanned my computer thouroughly for both virus's and malware.

    Hi zenithtwc, to test whether this is a settings issue, could you do a three-minute experiment?
    '''Create a new Firefox profile'''
    A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
    Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
    ''Don't delete anything here.'' Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
    Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like Test731, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
    Can it reach the internet?
    When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.
