  • Safari won't open sites and is operating slowly

I'm pretty new at this and admit I have no idea what to do. So, I'm unable to access many websites and the sites Safari does open, it's moving extremely slow. A couple of weeks ago, while online, I got some kind of message about a virus. When I tried to close the window a new one opened which displayed some kind of virus scan. I asked a friend about it and he told me I may have a "Trojan Horse" on my computer now. Is there a way for me to check this out? And if so, how do I get it off of my computer?

Hi Jade and welcome to the forums!
    Two issues.
    1. Slow Safari - try this:
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.220.222
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
    Possible Trojan:
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
    http://www.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X. Called DNSChanger Trojan and also known as OSX.RSPlug.A Trojan Horse the software attacks users attempting to play a fake video file.
Upon attempting to play the video, the victim receives the following message:
“Quicktime Player is unable to play movie file.
Please click here to download new version of codec.”
Upon running the installer, the user's DNS records are modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
SecureMac's DNSChanger Removal Tool allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac. A white paper has recently been published on the subject by SubRosaSoft, available here:
    http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
    Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/

  • Safari won't open sites

"Safari can't open the page.....because Safari can't load any data from this location"
I'm using Safari 7.1.3 and Mavericks.
My other browsers (Chrome, Firefox) have become completely corrupted by weird extensions that I never allowed. So that when I click on any link on any page, it opens ads. LOTS of ads.
I've set it to "block cookies and other website data from third parties and advertisers" because before I did that, Safari was acting the same way as Chrome and Firefox.
Also limiting website access to location services and ask websites not to track me.
Is this making it impossible to go to a site like Creative Cow for instance????
    Any advice welcomed.

  • Safari won't open google, facebook and other selected sites?

My internet is working but for some reason safari won't open selected sites - seems like it's loading and says "contacting (website)" and nothing happens. Any advice?

    Hi,
I tried doing that, still won't open google?
After a few minutes of waiting I am now getting this error message:
    Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “http://www.google.ca/”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
It says "lost network connection" but all other internet applications continue to run...So I am clearly not losing my connection.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much.

  • Safari won't go to any sites all of a sudden

Using Safari 5 on a G4 MDD under OSX 10.5.8. Safari was working fine. The only thing I did was uninstall Virus Barrier, using the uninstaller from a recent update. After doing that, Safari won't load any sites at all, whether I click on a bookmark or type in an url. The url is filled out in the Safari window's address field, but there is no progress bar that shows it is trying to load the site. It just sits there with an empty window. The only difference from Safari 5 which is working on a MBP running OSX 10.6.4 is the text in the window's title bar. The title on the non-working Safari is the url followed by "1x1 pixels", whereas the title on the working version of Safari is the name of the page. For example, the BBC news site title on the working copy of Safari is "BBC News - Home" while on the non-working copy the title is "news.bbc.co.uk 1x1 pixels".
I have no idea what got messed up. I've tried downloading and reinstalling Safari 5, running Disk Repair and Disk Warrior (nothing to fix), reinstalling the OS via Leopard Archive and Install process saving network settings and user info and then updating with Combo updater and installing everything Software Update found - all to no avail. Nothing has changed in Safari Preferences from when it was working. No proxies enabled. Other browsers and mail client work fine on that Mac - it is only Safari that doesn't work.
Anyone have a clue what got munged and how to fix it?
    Thanks for any useful suggestions.

Did you restart your Mac after deleting Virus Barrier?
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.

How do I use a different browser then safari?  I have several sites safari won't connect to.

I can connect to Bank of America's site just fine. Can you connect to the site or is it that you can't perform certain functions on the website? Do you know that there is a Bank of America App available?

  • Safari won't display graphics for some web sites

There are some sites that Safari won't display all of the graphics. For instance, nissanusa.com opens to a blank page with a little "feedback" symbol in the lower right corner. Similarly, the infiniti.com page has some text but no graphics. Both pages open fine on Firefox. There are other pages, but I prefer not to have to switch back and forth between browsers. Am I missing a plug-in that I don't know about?
    Phil

Sorry, Guys. Somehow I screwed up when I installed the new Safari with Leopard. I don't remember accessing the preferences for Safari and thought they remained the same as for Safari 2. However, upon checking, I discovered the "enable plug-ins" box unchecked. Checking it solved all of the web site problems.
Peter, Thanks for your response. For informational purposes, on Safari 3, the "enable Flash" button is no longer hidden in the Mime settings tab. Now it's on right on the advanced page of the Quicktime preferences.
Again, sorry for my screw up and thanks for your help!

bee solved the problem with the advice below but this time it doesn't help! so, help! any clue? bobbie
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
    HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)
    3. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.

  • Safari won't make Google my default search engine. + Top Sites issue.

    hello
I am running 10.9.5, latest iMac, latest Safari.
Here's my issue. Safari won't make Google my default search engine.
I switched it in preferences, and it says the default search engine is 'Google', as well as saying it even saying 'Google' in the Toolbar text field.
However the results always come back in Yahoo. I've tried resetting Safari, opening and closing the app but no luck.
Also I have it set to show 24 Top Sites, but it only displays 12 and it's been stuck on the same 12 sites for 2 days.
I'm assuming these two might be related as they are both preferences which stubbornly refuse to save as defaults.
Any one else having these issues? Anyone know how to fix?
    Thanks!

  • Safari won't load new web sites after one or two are viewed

I open Safari, view my homepage, go to another website, then when I try to go to another site after that, Safari won't load it. The curser is still a black arrow, the new address in the address bar has the blue loading stripe on it that only fills the address 1/4 of the way and no further. I have to quit Safari and then reopen it to go to another site. Also, it won't quit. I click quit and get the spinning ball for a long time so I have to Force Quit.
Today I updated Safari to 3.2.3 I was running 3.2.1. I am on Mac OS 10.4.11. I thought maybe the update would fix this problem. But it didn't.
Any help for this pretty computer illiterate user would be most appreciated!!

    Hey Hawaiian Starman! Aloha!
Thanks so much for trying to help. I looked at Joe's problem and your reply to go to OnyX. I clicked on the link. Am I supposed to download something, or just work off that site? I clicked on the icon that said maintenance. It opened a window that had the following boxes and the Xs are the ones that were preselected.
    Maintenance: (X) Repair Permissions
    Execute Maintenance Scripts
    Cleaning: (X) System Cache
    (X) Application Cache
    (X) Fonts Cache
    (X) Logs and CrashReporter
    (X) Temporary items
    Rebuild:
    (X) Launch Services
    dlyd's shared cache
    Display of folders content
    Spotlight Index
    Mail-mailboxes Index
The Xs are the defaults I guess. But I wasn't able to deselect any and choose another?
Hey Hawaiian Starman, I think Apple should have you on their payroll! You are sweet to help!
Many thanks for your help and patience.

  • Safari won't play youtube videos anymore. I've never had trouble in the past. I switched to chrome but then back to safari and changed the default browser to safari. Now safari won't open any sites that require a user and password. Any suggestions?

    Hello everyone,
I've recently been getting error messages on youtube videos when using safari. This never used to happen. I tried using chrome but it didn't take care of the problem. When I set my default browser back to safari, safari won't open any websites that require a username and password. Any suggestions?

My case is different from those listed below.  First, I'm running OS X 10.8.5 and Safari 6.0.5.
    My problem is this:
I run a Google search, say, "youtube somesong", and from the hit list returned from google I
pick some selection. Youtube launches and plays the video without problems.  However, when
i click on any of the alternate videos from the page's  vertical list, only the name of the chosen video
appears beneath the video I just watched.  The new selection itself is not loaded by Safari.
This occurs for any selection I choose.  My way around this problem is to force a Safari reload of
the page by using the keyboard shortcut, Command-R.  This fills in the old video window with the
video I just chose.  Can I conclude that this is a Safari issue alone, or is it a Safari/Youtube combo gotcha?  Anyway, the present condition *****.
This problem began sometime after i upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I have reset Safari and have also
deleted the Youtube.com Cache, Cookies, and Local Storage from the Privacy settings under
System Preferences. I have also tested the problem by running Safari in 32 bit mode (no luck there).
If anyone out there has experienced this scenario, I sure could use a little help here.

  • Safari Won't Load School Moodle Site

I cannot access my school's Moodle site: http://moodle.cedarburg.k12.wi.us
The site works at school and from other individuals computer on their home networks.
Safari and Firefox seem to "hang" on two specific files.  Through Safari's "Activity" window, I've noticed that it hangs on two files entitled: "http://moodle.cedarburg.k12.wi.us/theme/EduMoodle2/styles.php" and "http://moodle.cedarburg.k12.wi.us/theme/standard/styles.php"
I've tried deleting Safari and reinstalling it.  Nothing.
Could it be my computer?  Running up-to-date on Snow Leopard on one computer and Lion on another (same problems w/ Safari)
Could it be my network?  Using a Time Capsule
Could it be my internet provider?  U-Verse
    Thanks for your help!

I just got the site to load. It does take time.
Do you have anti virus software installed or an app called Little Snitch?
I am using OpenDNS which may have made the difference.
It's to try if you want and free.
Open System Preferences / Network. Select your connection on the left then click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Under DNS Servers:
Type these numbers exactly as you see them here.
    Click + 208.67.222.222
    Click + 208.67.220.220
    Click Ok.
Quit then relaunch Safari. Try that site.

  • Safari won't work with Webkinz site

My kids (and me) play games on the Webkinz site, but we can't successfully login through Safari, so we use Firefox. But, if we play a long time, Firefox "unexpected quits", and because we have dial up, it takes a long time to get logged back in and everything reloaded, as Firefox empties the cache when it quits. When trying to log in through Safari, the program seems to stall. When reading the loading information from the status bar, it loads about 36 of 41 items, and then nothing happens. I have tried Safari 4.0 on my PC, and it does the same thing - stalls at about 41 items. We use dial-up at home, but I have a fast connection at work on my PC.
The bottom line is I am trying to find a solution that doesn't crash. Any ideas?
    Thanks
