Safari wont let me open links in new tabs anymore? Please help!?

On my Macbook, I'm using Safari as my browser.
Everything was fine until this morning; suddenly Safari will not give me the option of opening links from one page in another tab in the same window.
For example, if I'm browsing on EBay and want to open a search result in a new tab of the same window, usually when I would right click on my track pad or magic mouse, it would say "Open link in new tab" or "Open link in new window". However, now when I right click, it just says, "Open link" "Open link in new window" and "Copy link".
I haven't changed any settings or anything on my Macbook whatsoever in the last 3 hours (at least that I'm aware of). Can anyone please tell me how to get this back to normal?
Also, it seems that when I right click anywhere on a page, I only see the options "back" and "reload" whereas before there was "view source" etc.
Please help!

Hi,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, *make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64*. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) *make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If Safari still won't let you open links in new tabs, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
If your forum profile is correct (10.6.1) go to the Apple Menu/Software Updates ...
Very important to keep your system software up to date.
If you install the 10.6.3 update make sure and repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

• Safari 5.0.3, open link in new tab problem

I have a Mac 10.6.5.
When I open safari it works fine, then if I right click on a link I see the options open in a new tab, or window (and many other options), when I click open link in a new tab it works, then in the new tab I have a problem: If I right click on a link I can't see anymore the option "open in a new tab", all I can see is, open link, open link in a new window, download linked file and copy link, if I click on open link in a new window it opens a blank tab :s.
Also right click options are always limited in a new tab and, if I right click on a picture in the new tab I can't see the same options that are normally listed when I fist open a window.
How can I fix it, is someone else having this problem?
.

Hi and welcome......
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Quit Safari if it's open (Command + Q)
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. Now launch Safari. If Tabs work as they should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

• Safari in Windows 7 open links in new tab same window...

I have searched and seen similar topics, but no one answers. On my mac there is a terminal command that does this, but I use win 7 @ work and was hoping there was a way to accomplish the same thing. I want links to open in new tabs (just like clicking on ctrl + click does) I just don't want to have to press ctrl each time. Is there a preference file that can be modified? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm afraid I'm not going to be of much help here, Chris.
I'm not sure if this sort of function is handled by plists or registry settings, or by other components in the preferences/settings machinery.
The locations of the various preference files and folders on Safari on Windows Seven that I'm aware of are:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences\com.apple.Safari
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Safari
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\Safari
If you're good with plist editing, you might be able to find a relevant setting in one of the plists in those locations (although on a Windows machine, not all of the preferences/settings componentry are handled by plists ... there's some database-driven functions too).
Safari keys are sprayed through the registry. But you might want to start looking in HKEYCURRENTUSER (at a guess) for local-preference-related keys.

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Check Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
And try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file  (preferences)
Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that made a difference, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.
And try resetting Safari. From the menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.

• "Open Link in New Tab" Crashes Safari

Hey gang-
Just upgraded to Leopard 10.5.7 from 10.5.6. The latest version of Safari 3.2.3 is included. I notice that if I right-click any link and choose ""Open Link in New Tab", Safari crashes. Anyone else running into this with the new Safari?
Thanks!
Dave

Ahhh I found the issue. Had to update to the latest PithHelmet. Normally PithHelmet is good about popping up an alert if updates are needed for new versions of Safari, but not this time. Anyhow, installed new version and all is well!
Thanks!

• Put back "Open Link in New Window" first and default, rather than "Open Link in New Tab" in Safari 6.1

I do not like the order of the context menu changes in Safari 6.1.  I have become accustomed to using "Open Link In New Window" first in the context list, rather than the new "Open Link In New Tab".  I do not wish to use Tabs.  How may I remove this?

Well, I solved it just after I posted this.  I opened up the Safari Preferences, then went to the TABS section, and set "Open pages in tabs instead of windows: to NEVER", and unchecked "⌘-click opens a link in a new tab".   That set it back to open in new windows.
Tabs work if I am making quick tabs to refer to something.  Horrible if I want to compare two websites side by side.  So, by disabling the auto TAB function, I'm back to the way I prefer my browser to work, rather than the way something thinks I ought to use it.
Don't care about having all my browsers behavior the same.  If I wanted that, I would have run those browsers.

• Safari opens links in new tabs, or in pre-existing tabs without giving me the option of opening the link in the same tab.

Safari opens links in new tabs, or in pre-existing tabs without giving me the option of opening the link in the same tab.
This has never happened before. Normally I would right-click and select open in new tab. How do I fix it? It's really frustrating.

Safari > Preferences > Tabs
"Open pages in tabs instead of windows:"
Click the box for drop down.
You have three choices, Never, Automatically and Always.
Pick  your choice.

• Safari tabs - Can I open links in new tabs (with no key pressed)??

I am a heavy FF user and one of the most important feature I use is the tabbed browsing. The problem with Safari is, it does not allow me to set a default option to open all links (that i click) in new tabs rather than windows. There is a clear cut option available in the preferences pane of safari but that does not work. I don't want to press any button to open a link in a new tab.
Note: I know about "Merge all windows" option. But that is also one extra step right?

I'm running 10.4.11 and when I right click on a link I have the option (in the menu) to select 'Open Link in New Tab'.
Is that missing on 10.5.2?

• Safari 3.1's right click problem opening links in new tabs

For those of us who use a two-button mouse and like to open links in new tabs, Safari 3.1 has introduced problems that didn't previously exist. Right-click to open a new tab, then go back to the original document, and the problem appears. The mouse cursor no longer underlines links that are scrolled over. That makes it hard to tell if links are live or not. To restore that capacity, you have to left click somewhere on the page. Only then does normally underlining resume.
A minor thing, but one that adds dozens of clicks to my day that weren't there before. Is there any way to avoid it?

I have exactly the same problem, and i dont know what could be the reason. i tried different things, reapir permissions, reinstall Safari, clear the cache without any result. also if the link has a floating/bubble window (or what), it freezes too, and have to click somewhere else into the page to clear them. very annoying. =(
...on Windows it works correctly by the way...

When I empty cache, or first boot Safari, I have the option to "open link in new tab"
however, soon after I lose that option and am left with either "open link" or "open link in new window"
I want my tab option back!
what happened?!?

• "Open Link in New Tab" click

Hi,
In Firefox I was able to open links in new tab using middle-click (scroll wheel) of my mighty mouse. However, I got rid of my mighty mouse and have VX nano now. Is it possible to use any of the 5 buttons of this mouse for opening links in new tab in Safari using Steermouse or xGestures or anything else? I have both those apps.
Thanks.

If you right-click on the link, you can choose "open link in new tab" from the contextual menu.

• Right click "Open Link in New Tab" not working?

When at any website I try to right click on a link and then choose "open link in new tab" and nothing happens. "open link in new window" also does nothing. When first open up Firefox and right click on a link a really long list of options appears as well which did not appear yesterday. I think Firefox updated and restarted my computer last night as well. I tried Firefox safe mode and it still happened.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

• Cannot open links in new tab without holding Ctrl

There is only one option i see in preferences for opening sites in new tabs. and it is called "Open links from applications..."
Even with this checked, by default all links open in a new window, unless I hold down Ctrl while clicking the link.
There MUST be a way to set ALL links to open in a new tab like every other browser I've used. No??

Every single time this topic is raised, someone tries to claim there is a work-around, while seemingly forgetting that this is the Safari for Windows forum, and not the Safari for Mac forum.
This is the single biggest glaring omission from Safari for Windows. It completely defeats the purpose of even having tabs, which makes me wonder what in the world were the developers thinking.
Safari is a very pretty and fast browser, but I don't know many people who actually use it on a Windows machine due to the inability to simply open links in a new tab without right clicking or holding some extra button down. It's also the only mainstream browser for Windows that isn't capable of this simple task.
Having watched this issue since Safari 3, without ever seeing any response other then "oh, but just do this work-around" (that only works for Macs), my guess is we'll never see it happen. The funny thing is that when you look at the ini files that can be changed on the Mac version, they are pretty much identical to the Windows version. So, the "fix" not working simply means that whoever was in charge of the part of code related to tabs when porting to Windows must have consciously decided there was no need for the ability to open links in new tabs.
Proving once again that software engineers can be utterly clueless about the usability of their software.
