Safari yahoo searches - new tabs

Hi, like to use yahoo as my default search engine, when i do and i click a link in yahoo it opens in a new tab, neither google or bing does this.
Any ideas how to many links open in the current tab instead?

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Tabs tab.

  • Safari hangs on new tab and slows switching full screen apps..

Hey guys, having problems with safari, when a new tab is open which displays all the most visited sites,it lags wayyyy toooo much when switching to other full screen apps, this happens only in new tab and while showing visited sites not when another website is open...i have updated to the latest os 10.8.3,and this just started happening a month back, just yesterday safari was hanging with everypage,i did a full reset and then the same problem, please help..i don like to use other web browsers at all..

I agree with everything you said about full screen apps, mission control and launchpad. For apps that made sense to run full screen, they already could under SL. Launchpad is totally unnecessary and Mission Control is a mere shadow of Expose and Spaces.
However, I feel you have not given due credit to Spaces. The point of Spaces is to let one organise logical desktops for different tasks, not just a way to reduce the number of windows on display. For example, I have a Space for software development where I run Xcode and the iPhone simulator, a Firefox window showing perhaps documentation or some other websites pertaining to software development, a Finder window that is opened in the folder with my design docs. I have another Space where I have the remote login sessions, yet another Space with another Firefox window where I do general surfing and emailing. I can switch between these spaces using a keyboard shortcut, which is much quicker than having to lift my hand off the keyboard, move it over to the mouse, move the mouse pointer over the Dock, find the app and click on it, only to find that it has switched to the wrong window of the app.
Without Spaces, organisation of my desktop is disrupted each time I want to switch task, whereas Spaces allows me to drop everything I am doing, go and do something completely different for a while and go back to my exact previous environment. I have a 27" iMac so am not short of screen space but I use Spaces extensively. BTW, switching Spaces using a keyboard shortcut is a lot faster on SL than the equivalent on Lion, thanks to the gratuitous screen animation of the latter.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Safari: curser in new tab always in search bar

Why is it that when I open a new tab in Safari the curser defaults to the search bar and not the address bar? Can this be changed?

Yes I figured it must have been discussed before (searched but failed to find) because surely I couldn't be the only person who was annoyed by this..! 98% of the time I open a new tab it's to enter an address, not to do a web search..!! If this isn't changed soon I'll probably start using one of the other browsers available for the iPad out of frustration instead.

  • Safari opens a new tab, randomly from history every time I am clicking on something on my opened safari page!

I have a mac book pro and my os x is 10.9.5 is updated. I use safari 7.1 ( the last updated version) , firefox and google chrome. It is a few days that I have the problem of opening an unwanted new tab from history ( just random but usually mac cleaner) automatically every time that I click on my opened page! Now I see that this also happened in firefox and chrome. I have tried, un-installing extensions, clear history, reset safari/chrome/ firefox... But the problem is not solved. I am really confused! I see many adds in every page I open too. which I did not see before this.  I appreciate if anyone can help me get rid of these unwanted tabs!

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine item from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Advertising in Safari in every new tab

    Hey guys,
I have a serious problem on my mac since a few days. If I open Safari I get already beside my tab with my favourites sites a tab with advertising. Also if I make a new tab and lets say I go to Facebook, its creating a new tab with advertising again. I have checked a lot of things already. So there isn't any new extensions or plugin that got installed. I checked by Avira my system and it found a file which name was FLV Media Player Adware and deleted it. I searched in the internet a bit about that kind of virus. But I can't find a solution how do get it completely away from my computer. I checked with Bitdefender Virus Scanner and Avira and deleted all files or but them in quarantine, but its still there. Does anybody know what can I do? Or what kind of Software (free) I could use to find more files which belong to that virus?
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Best,
    Fabian

  • In Full Screen mode Safari only opens new tabs?

Safari 5.1 has a preference that lets you set whether or not targeted links open into new tabs or new windows.
In regular screen mode, this preference works as expected.
In Full Screen mode (Lion), this preference seems to be ignored, and Safari always opens targeted links into new tabs.
Is there a preference I'm missing to set this behavior for Full Screen mode?
The reason I ask is that I would love to use the swipe gesture to switch between different web pages I have open, and so far Safari only seems to use gestures in Full Screen mode to switch between windows, not tabs.

Hi there i tried... I think prey locked my computer..:(
Infact i know it did because i just got out...after making changes in prey ...**** that is one **** of a program...

  • Every link in Safari opens in new tab or window

I'd like to find a way so that every time I click a link in Safari, instead of opening in the current window, it opens in either a new tab or window.
I understand that I can hold down "Command" while I click a link and it will open in a new window or tab, and that I can right click or control click and select "open in new window" from the contextual menu, but I don't want to do that.
I simply want every link that I click to open in a new window. Every time.
I'm willing to dig deep into the system and get under the hood if necessary.
    Thanks,
    Darryl

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you asking me to post my Safari preferences? Or something else?
    Anyway, 10.6.6 running Safari 5.0.3.
Tab preferences - "Open pages inn tabs instead of windows" = "Always".
"Command-click opens link in a new tab" - checked
"When a new tab or window opens, make it active" - checked
"Confirm before closing multiple tabs or windows" - checked.

  • Safari wont open new tab

I have Safari set to open links "in a new tab in the current window" but for some reason whenever I click a link it opens a new window....what am I doing wrong?
Also, cant I set up a new tab to open with a web page instead of a blank page?

If you want a tab to open directly from a link, you'll need to use 3rd party add-on SAFT. When installed, SAFT is accessible via Safari Preferences. Within SAFT there is a panel for tabs, where you'll find the command "always open browser window in tab". Works like a charm.
By contrast, Safari's new page command applies to opening links from other Apple applications such as Mail or iChat.
Regarding your second question, whenever you open a new tab using the New Tab command, an untitled or blank page appears. This is normal. At the moment there is no way within Safari to open a pre-designated web site. Consider sending Feedback to Apple about incorporating such a feature in a future version of Safari.

  • IPad safari bookmarks in new tab but not icon

My bookmarks stopped syncing between my MBP and my iPad.
i have full, up to date selection of bookmarks when I click the + icon for a new tab ... But my 'book' icon remains resolutely empty ... What am I missing?
After considerable research I thought I had sorted it .. But no :-( I have disabled safari syncing on both devices ... Re-enabled it, with time periods between, restarted both devices etc. etc. both devices are running up to date versions of their respective OS. Is there a setting that I missed.
    Thanks.

Try uninstalling the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

  • How to stop safari opening a new tab which relates to inappropriate viewing

When I'm in safari a new tab opens to reveal an awful **** site, why is this happening and how can I stop it? I've had my iPad for 18 months and this has only just started to happen.

Just updating this thread with the solution in this case.
Solution: Go into your template and remove the reference "_blank" which is causing this to open in a new tab.

  • Stop safari from opening new tabs every link click?

Not sure when it started, all I know is that it's been very iritating ever since.
On the pad, phone, mac, and mac book, web browsing has become a pain in the a$$ because every (ok high 90%) on a link opens a new tab on the macs a new browsing window on the phones....in a minute or so the macs have 10 taps open and the phone is maxed out with 8 new windows all on the same thing.
how do i switch this off?  I just want the "old?" way where i got one window and the web session can move forward and back at my choosing in the same tab, and if i want to open a tab, i right click on the link and select "open in new tab"
Whatever happened to that?  Am I the only one who hates this new way of safari operating?
    Thanks.

    May have a fix per Bill;
"I am seeing the same problem in Snow Leopard and Safari 5.1.10 as are many other people with various versions of Safari on several forums.
I've done routine maintenance including emptying caches and clearing out cookies. I've changes tab/window preferences to update Safari's plist all without effect. The blank full-screen window in the background has no code. I've even looked for differences in the HTML and CSS from the originating pages gotten from Chrome and Safari. No differences.
The only thing I can remember changing was a Glims update which dated 11/25/13. Since Glims messes with Tabs it is possible.
    This is a pain.

  • Links that open new windows in Safari instead of new Tabs...grrrr!!!!

Why is it that when clicking on a link in a website sometimes open a new tab in the same window (which is great) an other times it opens a completely new window (annoying)? I have already ticked the box which tells safari to open new links in tabs rather than a new window, but it continues to open new windows...although not always. Firefox seems to handle this feature a lot better. Any ideas?

Funny you should post this. I was just looking for this answer as well and I found this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9343894&#9343894
    thread. Basically, enter:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
in a terminal window and it will change to the behavior you desire. Change 'true' to 'false' to revert back.

  • Safari slow opening new tabs

    Hi,
After a fresh install of yosemite I noticed that safari is really slow (about a 3-5 seconds lag) opening new tabs, not everytime but most of the time (around 50%). This behavior also occurs when I focus the url bar.
It happens using the mouse and also using the keyboard shorcuts (⌘+T and ⌘+L respectively).
First thing I tried was disabling Safari Sharing on the iCloud settings but it didn't work. I also tried all of the usual suspects: deleting caches, cookies, reset safari, etc... As I said it happened from the first minute after a clean install of yosemite.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have the exact same problem and it kills usability. I filed a bug with Apple on bugreport.apple.com (problem ID 1882855). Hopefully we'll hear from them.
