Safaris is not blocking pop-up windows

I just installed Lion and my browser is suddenly doing a very poor job of blocking pop-up advertisements.  Any idea what happened?  Literally, my browser just let through 4 pop-ups in one 20 minute session.

Yes, I do understand that pop-ups can get through (I've been using computers for some time...my first was built by my grandfather using a tape deck, an electric typewriter and a TV in 1976).  I am not concerned with the odd Pop-up.  I am concerned with the inordinate number of them getting through since I upgraded to Lion.  There is a noticeable increase... not just one or two per day (normal) but 5 or 6 a session (abnormal)...and yes, the pop-up blocker is on... and no, I won't ask you where there "any" key is.

  • Safari not blocking pop-up windows

Even though I have block pop-up windows checked in in the Safari menu, I am finding that this blocking feature is not reliable. One of the pop-up windows I see frequently is for Netflix. This is not the only one.
Does anyone know of a method to really inhibit the pop-up windows in addition to what I am doing?
I'm running the latest OS (10.5.4)
    Thanks for any help.

It's not possible to block all popups, since some are activated by Flash instead of JavaScript, so unless you remove the Flash plugin or have some way of disabling it, you will always see an occasional popup window, depending on which kinds of sites your visit.
that's just the nature of the beast.

  • Safari adblock not blocking ads anymore...

    Hi,
I have been using Safari adblock for a long time now. However, it is no longer blocking any ads even in common websites like cnn.com or news.bbc.co.uk. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing and made sure safari is running in 32 bit mode. But it doesn't seem to work. Did any one face a similar problem?

I am having the same problem and it started today and manifests itself on two separate MacBook Pros
    - Both running Safari AdBlock 0.4.0 RC3.
    - One laptop is running Leopard the other Snow Leopard.
    - The Laptop running Snow Leopard is running Safari in 32-Bit mode.
    - In Safari>Preferences>Security> Block pop-up windows is enabled
    - In Safari>Preferences>Ad Block> is enabled
    - Safari>Block Popup windows> is checked
Since this thread is marked as answered I created a separate thread to continue this discussion.

Well I found nothing wrong in your post. So why even make a statement like the quote I included?
Once more I am a retired government employee. So I have the time to post. Or has my rights been taken away to voice an opinion?
Your posts was great you were not whining about your rights to file complaints to the FCC or FTC etc. One of the best I have read.
And I am not trying to sway you from your phone choice. If you looked at my avitar it shows apple iphones. But I use and have used androids and not Windows phones.
However your numbers of windows phone users all leaving over the issue is miniscule in the number of users of Android and iOS devices.
I have written many times I wish all the devices get updated like iOS devices do. But at present that is not happening
No bashing, no adversarial post just a little common sense is all I use.
And again your post was great.

  • I have a problem with Firefox. The checkbox for "Block pop-up windows" under Tools – Options – Content unchecks itself when I close the browser.

In other words, I can go into the content tab, check the box to stop pop-ups, but if I close the browser, and then reopen it, the box is no longer checked. What is the cause of this?

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, none of the fixes that you directed me to worked; the “safe mode” fix, prefs.js change to prefs.jsOLD fix, the blow it out and reinstall fix; and prefs-1.js does not exist. I’m willing to try any other fixes you can think of, so send them along if you have any.
One thing that did come to mind though is; the extension “.js” is for java script. And, with Firefox 6.0 installed, the Java 6 Update 26 is disabled, with the message under add-ons – extensions being, “Java Console is incompatible with Firefox 6.0.” Could this be the reason I can’t get the “Block pop-up windows” box to remain checked?
I’m not an IT guy, so any further help will be appreciated.

  • How do I disable "Exceptions" button for "Block pop-up windows" in Content tab?. I am able to Disable other Exception buttons in this tab using about:config preference.

Need a way to disable "Exception" button for "Block Pop-up windows" in Tools-> Options -> Content tab. I want to be able to do this for Locking Down Firefox preferences.

That button doesn't have a pref associated with it, so you can't disable that button with a pref on the about:config page or a lockPref call.
That only leaves the choice to remove that button with code in userChrome.css

  • After upgrading to 3.6.12 my browser is not opening pop-up windows and while closing the browser giving a message that some tabs are open and shall the same be closed? I have not encountered this problem with eralier version. Is there any known issues?

Some of my web pages open a new pop-up window for entering credentilas and display sensitive information. After upgrading t0 3.6.12 i found that firefos is not opening pop-up windows (earlier version allowed). When I close the browser, it gives a quit message saying there are unclosed tabs and windows of firefox. shall they be saved for next time start.
Also observed that the memory usage (from Task manager)is very high compared to earlier ones and the process is not closed even if I close the browser.

    3.6.13 is also behaving similarly.

  • Safari will NOT block cookies, ever

Safari will NOT block cookies, ever.  No matter what they always show up (even from advertisers on a particular site) - I have reset safari, deleted its preference file, re-installed the OS, tried a different user, tried as root user - all with same same result.  I tried to re-install Safari but was told by the OS that I need to have at least 10.6.7 installed and I am currently running 10.6.8!
I have an 27" iMac running 10.6.8 with all updates, Safari 5.05.  I am also running VirusBarrier X6 10.6.12.  VirusBarrier has a cookie feature as well but it doesn't block cookies.  I have completely disabled VirusBarrier and still get the same results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

This is true.  The "block cookies always" setting in the Privacy tab is not 100% effective (evidently Apple programmers have their own definition of "always").
There will not be a solution from Apple. They don't care. Users that want to block cookies are almost surely poor consumers and probably troublemakers too.
dfp mbp's fix will work but what a pain.

  • How do I stop pop-ups in Safari beyond "block pop-up windows" since that does not work

Do I type more details here? Do I take pictures? Change my font? Why????
WHY can't I simply ask a question and get other users to comment or answer the question? You have made everything so much more complicated.
When I go into the Apple store and present these issues, I get silly grins and tee-hees followed by "yeah, this is the way they do it now."
At one point I am asked if I "LIKE" something. Who cares? Just fix the darn computer! What are tags and why?
Apple is getting more like Microsoft everyday.

Pop-Ups windows are effectively being blocked in Safari, but some web-sites have updated their sites to open a window when you click on content on their site.  This is not a Safari issues it is a web-site issue.  I am not sure on how to stop these without stopping other features on the browser. You can get more information about this by clicking here.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop-up_ad

  • Firefox does not open pop-up windows from java script even if blocking pop-up is disabled for those sites

I need to use pop-up windows for some e-mail sites which use java, but firefox doesn't do anything, even if i allowed pop-ups for those sites or disable completely

If the settings in Firefox are correct then make sure that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) isn't blocking pop-ups, some have advanced features that include blocking pop-ups.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Windows 7, Firefox browser not blocking pop ups

I bought a new computer with Windows 7. I downloaded Firefox, which I had on my previous computer with no problems. Even though I have it set to block pop ups, I still get pop ups several times a day.

    See this: <br />

  • Pop-up windows are blocked even though I uncheck "Block pop-up windows" in the options.

In Facebook, when I try to launch the player to play all the songs Songs iLike, it does not work. Instead, an empty window opens up. Also in Windows Live, when I try to pop out my conversations, it just says "If your pop out window is blocked, check your browser settings." and the same empty window appears.

You may have another pop-up blocker on that PC, maybe as part of a security program.

  • Blocked pop up window

    Hi,
Could someone help me with a pop up window problem. I'm new
to dreamweaver, and am currently trying to build my own site. On my
home page, i have a link which visitors click on to 'open up a new
window' which contains my main Flash site. I've created the link in
dreamweaver like i believe i should do, with new behaviour new
window etc. This all works fine, but the problems occurs when its
online, as when visitors click on it online it says 'POP UP
BLOCKED' and if visitors have pop ups blocked automatically then
the link will never work. Can anyone advise on how to get passed
the blocked pop ups or make this window not a pop up?

It's a bit strange. Both of those links below the Flash lead
    to the Adobe
    site - you know that?
Also, you have applied the onclick event to a <p> tag,
    and that's not
usually the best practice (and it's why you do not get the
    pointer when you
    hover over them) -
    <p align="center" class="style2"
    onclick="MM_openBrWindow('
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/','','')">click
    animation to enter </p>
    <p align="center" class="style4"
    onclick="MM_openBrWindow('
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/','','')">website
requires flash . click here for latest download </p>
As to the popup problem -
It's IE-only behaviour as a result of changes Microsoft made
    earlier this
year to their browser, regarding how Active Content (Flash,
    Quicktime etc)
is handled, after losing a high profile court case.
