Safe Boot Only in ANY, repeat ANY of apple's OS's

I am trying to get a PowerBook G4 867 MHz Combo Drive to function normally. (This is separate from my workhorse flat panel iMac...) The machine boots quite fine in every OS as long as it's a safe boot. Normal boot in every OS gives me a functional cursor but no screen whatsoever, just gray. I have loaded EVERY OS from 8.6 to 10.4.x., always initializing the HDD in between. There is no additional software installed. There is no external device installed. I have swapped RAM from slot to slot, tried new RAM; tried it without RAM. I have searched the previous posts, for example; June 22nd's Danny Lloyd; dpc719 from June 11th; Erik Madsen from March 23; OldSkoolMac; and so forth. Nothing is quite the same. Help. Please!

Hi, macisland. Your post is baffling, in that it's quite impossible for an 867MHz Powerbook to start up at all in any OS lower than 9.2.2, and there's no way you could even have performed a standard installation of any OS from 8.6 thru 9.2.1 on it. (You could have Finder-copied a System Folder from another Mac, but it wouldn't be bootable.) The only source for a bootable OS 9.2.2 installation on that Powerbook is the Software Install and Restore DVD that originally came with it.
Furthermore, if you installed OS X (any version) from a machine-specific disc or discs that were originally shipped with any other Mac model, that would explain why those installations weren't bootable either. That Powerbook shipped with OS X 10.2.3 installed, so no lower version of OS X will suffice. If you have a retail (universal, not machine-specific) installer disc set for Panther (10.3.x) or Tiger (10.4.x), those should work fine. If they don't, then you actually do have a problem. Please let us know whether you've tried the original DVD that came with the Powerbook and/or a retail Panther or Tiger installer set.
In addition, "Safe Boot" is specific to OS X. There is no such thing in OS 8.6 - 9.2.2. Holding down the Shift key when starting up in OS 8.6 or 9.x turns all non-Apple and some Apple extensions and control panels off, but it isn't called Safe Boot. And as I've written above, you couldn't have done it anyway, except in a proper installation of OS 9.2.2.

Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.

    Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled.  I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
    Thanks for all your help.
    Gratefully,
    Cheri

  • Mac start normal boot after safe boot only.

Hello. My mac is about 3 1/5 years old now. Recently, my username crashed. In other words, my mac works on my brother's user name and then guest's as well but doesn't work in mine. It froze when loading. I took it to the mac support but then he created a new user with my name and then copied all my files to that one but he left the way it is. Now, everytime I start it, apple gray screen turns into a prohibitoy logo. So I do a safe boot and then it goes to a login screen. I then press restart button (with out the safe boot) then only my mac starts normally. The thing is I have to do this every time when I start my computer. Every time my computer boots twice.
So is there a way to fix this? I have reset the Ram but no avail. I don't want to erase and fix it. May be there is some issue with the old user. If I can fix that I might fix my computer but it's still a blind guess.
    Please give me some opinions.

P.S. I also have installed a boot camp

  • MacBookPro5,1 + Install Mac 10.9.3 = restart loop (safe boot only)

Tried installing 10.9.3 from 10.6.8 on my MacBookPro5,1 on 2014/06/03; it goes into a startup loop since then and only starts in Safe mode. I am thankful that Mavericks' Safe mode allows internet browsing; but I have searched in vain so far for a solution.
Things I have tried with no succes so far:
    Reinstall 10.9.3
    Reset power manager/SMC
    Zap NVRAM
    Puzzled over error logs
Logged into recovery mode, repaired disk and permissions
Made bootable installer on external drive
Install (clean?) 10.9.3 on 900GB partition of external drive, will only start in safe mode from that installation
Run Apple Hardware Test from original install disk 2, got an error
Confirmed that AHT error (battery thermal sensor?) was from replacement battery by running test with original battery. Tried but failed to startup with original battery. Internet sources indicate error no real problem.
Replaced  8GB memory upgrade (from OWC) with original 4GB stock memory, still only starts in safe mode
Before initially installing Mavericks from Snow Leopard, I:
Made a Time Machine backup on an external drive
    Verified disk with Disk Utility
    Repaired permissions with DU
Ran TechTool Pro 6 - Did not run detailed sector check, passed all other tests including SMART, video, RAM, etc.
Backed up projects, archives, and such on external hard drive, now wish I had done the disk clone option too.
I am hopeful for a solution to stay with Mavericks rather than rewind back to Snow Leopard...
Currently running off the clean(?) install on the external hard drive, here is the error message to Apple:

          Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
The backtrace looks the same (on cursory examination) whether the error log was generated by the clean external HD install or the internal notebook HD.
    Problem System Launch Daemons:
      [failed] com.apple.ucupdate.plist
This EtraCheck note was also on both the clean external HD install and the internal notebook HD reports.
    Whew...
Thanks for your patience with this long winded posting, any help is greatly appreciated!

    Good thought Barney!

I wonder if com.apple.ucupdate.plist is locked?
Thanks for this suggestion, gives me more info to look up.
I can tell this 5,1 really wants to run Mavericks, even running in Mavericks Safe Mode is giving longer battery life already...

  • Program runs in Safe Boot only, Already reinstalled OS!

I use a program called SketchUp. It is a CAD program and a very simple one.
I can run and edit files in SafeBoot with out a problem. But in normal boot the app will load the startup window where I can select a template or a recent file. After I open either the app will Not respond indefinatly. I force quit and repete
I have already reinstalled the entire OS a few times since I got this referb 2012 MBP from apple. the most recent time I did it with the sole intent of only installing SketchUp. With absoulty nothing on the Mac except the Mountain Lion OS and SketchUp I continued to get the same problem.
Things to know but I dont see how they can be relaited.
The computer will not sleep, if I close the lid the screen stays on for about 30 seconds and then turns off. When I open it I get the backlight on with a black screen and a mouse courser. I end of forcing a shut down.
    Also--------
I have a Double drive set up. Apple orgional to the macbook 1tb HardDrive in the Optical bay and an OWC 120Gig SSD in the main HD bay. I had this same setup in my 2010 MBP with out a single proble other then it was too fast .
    Also-------- (sorry to be longwinded)
I went to the bar and they did their test everything checked out, except the optical drive of course. They dicided to order a new sleep sensor or something close to the sleep light on the front of the mac and I am waiting for that to come in.

I have tried both a guest account and a test admin account. Same issues.
Maybe worth metioning. When I try to log out of my accounts the computer freezes at the gray screen till i force shut down.
I mentioned this is a Referbished unit. I am really courious if this could be the reason that it was returned. My last refirb had an intermitent charging issue that took me a year to get fixed. I guess I should stop buying macs.
Edit: Stop buying Referbished macs that is.

  • My Macbook Pro (15" early 2011) got blue screen every i normally booted it. It only can enter the OS when it's in safe boot. Solution please.

My Macbook Pro (15" early 2011, Mountain Lion, but after reinstall i change it to snow leo) got blue screen every i normally booted it. It enter the OS only when it's in safe boot.
I've tried any solution that i got from the internet, such as:
-Reinstalling the OS X (normal install & clean install)
    -Reset PRAM and SMC
-Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk from Disk Utility (the result is OK. There's no problem)
-Repair Disk Permissions manually (with Command + S at the beginning of booting)
-Checking Hardware from Application Installer DVD (result is OK)
-Checking from Mac Resource Inspector/MRI (result OK)
-Booting from Recovery Disk is same problem, blue screen
All of that solution is not working. My Macbook still got light blue screen and sometimes blue screen with lines after apple logo and spinning wheel is shown.
HDD is in good condition because when it's checked on the other macbook it can be booted. But if you must know, other HDD can't be booted when its plugged to my macbook (blue screen again). If i do safe booting, it works but can't play video and music also photobooth. I got confused with this case.
Any solution or comment? Thank you very much by the way

Hi. I'm not trying to rush things, you may have a different problem, but your issue looks quite familiar to me. I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13150366#13150366
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21110132#21110132
So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. This post describing the process (there are different files involved depending of your GPU version, so make sure you are moving the right ones):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22521574#22521574
In the case your discrete GPU survived and is not permanently damaged, I personally had success by changing the thermal compound myself, which completely fixed the problem (at least for now). I've posted about it here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22630561#22630561
I hope you can find a solution, believe me I know the feeling when you see your expensive machine turning into a brick and it *****.
    Good luck!

  • Disabling Safe Boot

I recently spilled a drink on my Macbook, and it has caused sticky keys, including a shift key that just will not un-press. As a result of that, every time I boot, it puts me into safe boot mode.
Is there any workaround for this that will make Leopard either ignore the shift keypress, or just disable safe boot altogether (not wise, I'm aware, but a suitable last resort), or perhaps disable the Macbook's keyboard, since I have an external I can use.

Click here and follow the instructions.

  • Safe Boot issue..?

I'm planning to go to Mavericks soon as 10.9.1 arrives, and this turns up...
I have done a safe boot for the first time ever, following Apple's directions exactly, many times over, and this keeps happening:
Either- 1- Shift key pressed after gong- get a gray circle with a slash, then a little bit of a terminal like language, white letters on black, then a gray screen with several languages saying i restarted because i had a problem, hit the shift key and it goes into the finder and asks if I want to report a problem. .. there is an apple or two that comes up in the process as well, hard to get it all, goes pretty fast... There seems to be a problem..?!
Or- 2- A safe boot with shift, command and V keys, i.e., verbose... it goes through a whole lot of terminal like language, then shifts straight on into the finder. when I shutdown/reboot again it gives some more terminal like language and then reboots as usual. Is this Safe Boot and is it working, and if so what is happening with 1, above..?
3- And, in both cases my startup items still start up, is that supposed to happen in safe mode..?
I'm totally perfect for a year, since new, all upgrades, etc., lots of complex use, software, and all still seems totally fine every way, all rebooting, everything even now, except that now in this first try at a safe boot this occures, something I've never been moved to do before... yikes..?
AND now particularly, when I'm planning to go to Mavericks, and concerned how this might affect that..?
    2012 cMBP os x 10.8.5, 16 gig ram 512 gig ssd
Hoping someone who understands such things is looking in, here is a copy of the report that comes up when I say yes to making a report, wondering if it is the same as a KP log, or, how does one get a KP log..?

    Solution to problem found:
Got to looking around, and found this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5425709?start=0&tstart=0
    The gist is this:
The OS X 10.8.5 update, at least for a lot of folks, made the mach_kernel visible and relocated it to the Documents folder.  It needs to be in the root folder, must be there same folder as system and applications, and it is usually invisible there.
I remembered finding it in the Documents folder and tossing it in the trash.  Fortunately I hadn't emptied the trash yet.  I simply moved it to the root folder, rebooted as added insurance repaired permissions, rebooted again, and now all is well, perfect safe boot and everything.  I never did a safe boot before so had no idea it loped the way it does.  Pretty cool…
As an added bonus, what got me to trying a safe boot was that the latest Office update wouldn't recognize mountain lion, it thought i was running something prior to 10.5.x, so it wouldn't install.  It has now installed perfectly.
Additionally, per the above link/forum thread, I hid the mach_kernel again, with this command in the terminal-  sudo chflags hidden /mach_kernel  which also worked perfectly.
    All is well, yea!

  • MacBook Pro freezes during start up and safe boot

MacBook Pro freezes during start up and will not start in safe boot in recovery, it goes back to apple screen with spinning gear

    Stinkster,
does your MacBook Pro have a removable battery? If so, then it originally came with grey installation DVDs. If it doesn’t have a removable battery, look on the bottom of your MacBook Pro for its serial number (it’s etched there in tiny print). If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three of them; if it has twelve, write down the last four. Include the three or four characters in your reply; they can determine which model MacBook Pro you have, and the model will determine whether it originally came with grey installation DVDs or not.
If your MacBook Pro did originally come with grey installation DVDs, then you’re going to need to find them (or buy a replacement pair from Apple or iFixit) to reïnstall Mac OS X on your current hard drive, or to install it on a replacement hard drive.

  • TS2570 Still cant access my computer, followed instructions to perform a safe boot and last line of script it shows: BootCacheControl: Unable to open /Var/db/BootCache.playlist:2 No such file or directory. Any idea?

    Brand new Mac Book Pro
Purchased in Mexico's Department store Liverpool on June 20th 2012
Purchased Memory upgade to 8Gb, on june 27th, at Apple Store Memorial City, Houston
Upgraded memory from 4Gb to 8Gb on June 28th.
Tried to write on my external HD (previously written on a windows based PC) with no success.
Upon reccomendation from a Mac assistant, copied all my external HD contents into my Mac Hard drive.
Then formatted my external HD and copied back all my information to it.
deleted all the  information from my MacBook Pro HD.
Attempted to repeat the same operation with another external HD, but got a message saying there was not enough epace on the computer HD (even though I have a 750Gb Hard Drive.
Looked in the trash bin and there it was, all the information previously deleted..
Could not empty the trash bin, although I got a message asking me to safely delete all the information from the trash bin,
Could not get enough space released, after several attpempts the trash bin was finally emptied.
All happy getting acquainted with my new MacBook Pro. Two days later, got a gray screen and not able to start the computer.
Looking in to Mac support I found article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 and followed instructions to perform a safe boot:
    "Perform a Safe Boot
Simply performing the Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to
see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
The following is the script that appears on the screen upon safe boot. and halt after the last line.

It can be a long download, so keep trying. My first download was at 3 am Cupertino time and took less than an hour. The second took close to three hours one evening.

Snow Leopard is a Mac OS X version. You say that it's the version you have in your Mac (10.6.8). Do a back up of your files, format the hard drive (using Disk Utility) and reinstall again

  • Cannot access safe boot for Mac Air running Snow Leopard any suggestion please?

Mac Air - Mid 2011 (79gig free space). Running Snow Leopard 10.6 + all updates installed to-date. Last update was iTunes 98m file which was installed 4 days ago.
Unit has progressively slowed up, starting with intermittent freezing of cursor, which appears to have started not long after connecting iPhone 5 running current iOS.
Have accessed Safe Boot and ran drive utility check, all ok.
Received error message after drive check stating, "(AppleUsbEthernetHost.text) incorrectly installed".
Have subsequently tried accessing Safe Boot again to try and reset permissions, but can not access as unit constantly freezes at Login page.
Have followed Apple support recommendations to access Safe Boot, but to no avail.
Have seen forum references to the above error relating to iOS mobile devices causing problems with earlier versions of iTunes updates.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed from here would be appreciated ?
    Ivy

I suggest you backup your files, if possible, then do the following:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstall your third-party software from the original media. Restore your data from the backup.
