Safe boot required for firmware upgrades??

The two recent firmware upgrades, EFI and SMC, both required me to do a safe boot for the firmware to install. Is this normal behaviour?? Trying to do the firmware install from a normal boot results in in an installation failure.
Possibly related, the "fixed" version of Parallels crashes the Mac during the install. If I try the same install during a safeboot, it will install. However, the system will panic during a normal boot until Parallels is uninstalled.
Thoughts?? Advice??? Thanks!
-Phil

You get updates by running Software Update (System Preferences else it's the 2nd item in the Apple menu).

  • Hard connect for firmware upgrade?

In my investigations as to what set-up I would llike to use for my wireless network, I noticed that DLink is adamant that their firmware upgrades be done with the router hard wired to the computer, rather than wirelessly.
I wonder if that is advisable for upgrading Airport Express firmware? I didn't see anything to that effect on the Apple download site for the January, 2006 version of the firmware. The assumption seems to be it's OK to conduct the upgrade wirelessly.
Can one connect the Airport Express via ethernet to the computer and perform the upgrade that way? Would that remedy the problems some have reported applying the upgrade. Would that require Airport Extreme be turned on? Would any damage be done by trying the upgrade this way?
Any feedback would be much appreciated.
    Thanks...
iMac Dual Core; iBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I think you will find that hooking up with an ethernet cable and hard wireing will always be a little better than downloading updates wireless, for speed and accuracy, That being said in many instances it is not a must.
The reason some ADSL modem manufactures recommend the hard wired method is to avoid any mistakes, thus making sure of the accuracy of there firmware update.
Your assumption is in fact correct that it is OK to conduct your upgrades wirelessly. The only time is when the manufacture recommends you do an operation HARD WIRED, they do this for a reason.
Without going into a lengthy disertation. Some Hardware, Software, etc have verification keys that allow your machine, software and hardware to recognize said applications for the download process.
So in the real world it is better and faster hardwired, but not a must in most cases.

  • SG300-28 switch in boot loop after firmware upgrade

After performing a firmware upgrade on an SG300-20 switch from ver 1.1.0.73  to 1.2.5.70 the switch now boots up with the following error and resets:
    30-Aug-2011 10:47:33 %L1Mngr-F-PARAMTOOLONG: csco-sb parameter %s is too long.
The attached file contains a full output of the console boot process.
I have tried loading different versions from the console, but all produce the same error.
Has any one any idea how to resolve this issue?
    Thanks

Hello Tom, Thanks for your reply,
I had done the process before with the 3 firmwares offered in the cisco website. I did it again, and i get a boot loop again, with following error:
%L1Mngr-F-PARAMTOOLONG: csco-sb parameter serialNo is too long.
    Any ideas?

  • Hardware Requirements for R12 upgrade

    Hi
We are planning to perform R12 upgrade(11.5.10.2 to R12) on our dual node Test servers.
    Following is the H/W configurations
    Node 1:DB + CCM + Admin
    =>Database size is approx.38-40GB,2 CPU's & 2GB RAM
    Node 2:Form + Web server
    =>2 CPU's & 2GB RAM
Is this a sufficient configuration for R12 upgrade.
    Thanks
    Shekhar

In general, you need to make the best of what you have on hand. If it were me, I would double or triple your RAM especially on your admin/DB tier, unless you only have 2-5 users.
Fast storage will make a huge impact on runtime of the upgrade driver.

  • XI Changes required for  R3 Upgradation

    Hi Experts,
Can anyone please explain me, if any changes are required from XI side on upgrading the connected R3(4.6 toECC 6.0). If yes then what are those changes for SLD(logical name,Technical setting) ,XI Configuration,Proxy etc.?
    Thanks!
    Sudhir

In current EBS version, we had done so many personalizations, customizations (in custom.pll & at form itself) as well as open interfaces.
Same things we have to do in R12 also.
we are unaware about the Technical platform used in R12 .
What are the changes at Technical perspective in R12 compare to 11i ? so that we can prepare ourselves accordingly .
Please guide me in this regards .....Please see old threads for similar discussion.

  • Creating Boot Environment for Live Upgrade

    Hello.
I'd like to upgrade a Sun Fire 280R system running Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 U4. I'd like to use Live Upgrade to do this. As that's going to be my first LU of a system, I've got some questions. Before I start, I'd like to mention that I have read the Solaris 10 8/07 Installation Guide: Solaris Live Upgrade and Upgrade Planning ([820-0178|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-0178]) document. Nonetheless, I'd also appreciate pointers to a more hands-on documentation/howto reg. live upgrade.
The system that I'd like to upgrade has these filesystems:
    (winds02)askwar$ df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/md/dsk/d30 4129290 684412 3403586 17% /
    /dev/md/dsk/d32 3096423 1467161 1567334 49% /usr
    /dev/md/dsk/d33 2053605 432258 1559739 22% /var
    swap 7205072 16 7205056 1% /var/run
    /dev/dsk/c3t1d0s6 132188872 61847107 69019877 48% /u04
    /dev/md/dsk/d34 18145961 5429315 12535187 31% /opt
    /dev/md/dsk/d35 4129290 77214 4010784 2% /export/home
It has 2 built in harddisks, which form those metadevices. You can find the metastat at http://askwar.pastebin.ca/697380. I'm now planning to break the mirrors for /, /usr, /var and /opt. To do so, I'd run
    metadetach d33 d23
    metaclear d23
d23 is/used to be c1t1d0s4. I'd do this for d30, d32 and d34 as well. Plan is, that I'd be able to use these newly freed slices on c1t1d0 for LU. I know that I'm in trouble when c1t0d0 now dies. But that's okay, as that system isn't being used anyway right now...
Or wait, I can use lucreate to do that as well, can't I? So, instead of manually detaching the mirror, I could do:
    lucreate -n s8_2_s10 -m /:/dev/md/dsk/d30:preserve,ufs \
    -m /usr:/dev/md/dsk/d32:preserve,ufs \
    -m /var:/dev/md/dsk/d33:preserve,ufs \
    -m /opt:/dev/md/dsk/d34:preserve,ufs
Does that sound right? I'd assume, that I'd then have a new boot environment called s8_2_s10, which uses the contents of the old metadevices. Or would the correct command rather be:
    lucreate -n s8_2_s10_v2 \
    -m /:/dev/md/dsk/d0:mirror,ufs \
    -m /:/dev/md/dsk/d20:detach,attach,preserve \
    -m /usr:/dev/md/dsk/d2:mirror,ufs \
    -m /usr:/dev/md/dsk/d22:detach,attach,preserve \
    -m /var:/dev/md/dsk/d3:mirror,ufs \
    -m /var:/dev/md/dsk/d23:detach,attach,preserve \
    -m /opt:/dev/md/dsk/d4:mirror,ufs \
    -m /opt:/dev/md/dsk/d24:detach,attach,preserve
What would be the correct way to create the new boot environment? As I said, I haven't done this before, so I'd really appreciate some help.
    Thanks a lot,
    Alexander Skwar

I replied to this thread: Re: lucreate and non-global zones as to not duplicate content, but for some reason it was locked. So I'll post here...The thread was locked because you were not replying to it.
You were hijacking that other person's discussion from 2012 to ask your own new post.
You have now properly asked your question and people can pay attention to you and not confuse you with that other person.

My confusion is that it doesnu2019t appear to be a full list, which is based on the assumption that I would have had to upgrade to the Latest SPu2019s, as viewed in the SLD first (see list below for reference)?
Is there a requirement to upgrade to the latest set of SPu2019s first, or can I upgrade to EHP1 SPS07 just using the list provided via the Maintenance Optimizer?

    Hi,
No it is not necessary to upgrade to the latest SPS of the current version first (NW 7.0) before upgrading to 7.01.
All what it requires is a minimum SP/SPS level & you are already on that & MOPZ has therefore proposed only the files for 7.01
    SPS.

  • Is ADS and PDF forms required for an upgrade to ECC 6.0 for US Payroll?

We're currently on SAP 4.7 for US Payroll, but are working on an upgrade to ECC 6.0. I'm looking for a clear answer to whether or not we have to move to Adobe Document Services and PDF forms with our upgrade. I've heard from several sources that SAP is not providing updates to SAPscript forms in ECC 6.0 and will only make updates to PDF based tax reporter forms going forward. Can anyone comfirm that is the case?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Is SAF required for ICSS?

    Hi,
I was wondering whether anyone would know whether you need to install the Software Agent Framework (SAF) if we wanted to use the SOlution Search and FAQs in the Internet Customer Self Service (ICSS) scenario?  We are using CRM 4.0 SIE and understand if using the non-java configuration of the IC Web Client we do not need SAF.  However is SAF still required for ICSS?
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    @jrboozer,
Have you tried going into your Start menu, looking for the HP folder, then using the wireless configuration utility? When I set the wireless up on my machine, this was how I did it and it worked beautifully.
Please let me know if you need any other help.
