Safe boot starts without command

MacBook Pro running 10.6.7 intermittently boots into safe boot without using the key commands.  Any ideas?

What exactly do you mean by this, do you see it start on screen or do you merely see the status light flash. The status light shows network and HDMI activity and not just when the Apple TV is on.

  • Suddenly won't boot, start up commands not working... am I out of luck?

Funny, this is my first mac being a hardcore and longtime PC user as my "test" mac... everything works perfectly... of course until 12 days after my warranty is up...
This morning on waking up my mac to turn on some music in iTunes, i click on the iTunes window to bring it into focus. It suddenly closes and dissapears, on returning to the shortcut bar (the tray at the bottom for programs, i don't know what mac users call it) and click on iTunes ot relaunch it after its crash/dissapearance, the task tray then decides to suddenly dissapear/crash (don't know which, it's like a crash but best described as a vanishing act as it doesn't lag or churn before dying, just vanishes).
Possibly related to this issue, not long ago my iChat stopped working, whenever i launched it, it would stay open for a couple seconds and automatically closed. I could sit there all day clicking it, it would open, 2 seconds later, close. I gave up on that. I gave up on that a week ago.
Shortly after my iTunes dissapeared/crash and then after the program tray also dissapearing. my mac mini reboots. Except it's stuck on the screen with the mac apple in the middle of the screen with the moving (yes it's moving) pinwheel on the bottom center of the screen. I let it sit there for a long while... 15 minutes pass nothing happens.
I try rebooting... same thing happens.
I'm go on my PC (Which i'm now typing from) and start searching for solutions. apple support pages suggest I try safe mode with shift.
SAFE MODE: Won't work. I tried pushing both shift buttons on my keyboard at different times (before the start up tone, immediately after the beggining of the start up tone, and after the start up tone finishes) all that happens is, I get the same pinwheel/apple screen that is "loading" (according to the pinwheel) forever.
I went to forums, read up on other different commands like holding down "X" or option command P+R.... X does the same as the not-working safe mode... option command P+R continually reboots the computer.
And in the end I'm still at square one. thouroughly frustrated. wishing my mac mini was a PC (as i've never had a PC problem I can't fix) Ironic experience... PCs, break often, easily fixed, no support needed.... Macs: rarely break, when they do, support needed, but support from apple expires 12 days ago, not easily fixed... and now I think i'm screwed out of the 700$+ i payed for this POS and I've lost my whole iTunes library, all the CDs i've loaded onto it, and all the music and TV shows i've purchased from the apple music store. Good game, apple takes a bunch of money, refuses to support my product which is now dead (had a similar situation with an iPod I had bought for my girlfriend).
My only hope is... I know mac users have a happy helpful community and always band together to help fellow mac users, something the PC world doesn't as-cohsively have. So...
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi... you guys are my last and only hope.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, John. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "I get the same pinwheel/apple screen that is "loading" (according to the pinwheel) forever"The "pinwheel" is known as a "spinning gear progress indicator."
This, combined with the other issues you've reported, sounds like problems with the hard drive. I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. You wrote: "...the shortcut bar (the tray at the bottom for programs, i don't know what mac users call it)"It's called the Dock. See "Mac OS X: About the Dock."
    3. You wrote: "...this is my first mac..."My "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ has a number of resources that you will find helpful including books, online training, and more.
    4. You wrote: "...Macs: rarely break, when they do, support needed, but support from apple expires 12 days ago, not easily fixed..."You should have bought the AppleCare Protection Plan (ACPP) before your warranty expired. The ACPP provides a two-year extension on the warranty and three years of telephone support.

  • Won't start in Install Disk, Safe Boot or AppleJack

Machine works fine except that when I insert Install Disk in effort to use First Aid (by holding C down) it doesn't recognize the disk.
Also, won't Safe Boot (starting with Shift held down), zap PRAM or AppleJack. Just ignores instructions, opens normally. Have Onyxd and Repaired Disk Permissions but no change.
    All somewhat worrisome. Any ideas?
    Tim

if you see a lock when you reboot with the option key pressed it means you have a firmware password set. that's what preventing you from being able to boot from the install disk, single user mode etc. you need to enter your firmaware password on the screen with the lock and it will let your through to the startup disk manager. you can boot from the DVD there. if you want to boot into Single User mode to run Applejack then you need to turn off the firmware password first. that's done from the install DVD using the firmware password utility in the Utilities menu.

  • Help: upon safe boot, got following message: BootCacheControl: Unable to open /Var/db/BootCache.playlist:2 No such file or directory

Mac Book Pro, late 2011. Purchased in a department store in Mexico.
Was running ok for several days after I purchased it.
Had some software installed and memory upgraded from 4 to 8Gb.
Suddenly at start up, got a gray screen with a spinning wheel and never boot.
Followed advise from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 and performed a safe boot. (hold Shift-Command-V during startup instead of just Shift).
The boot sequence starts then stops and nothing happens. these are the last lines of the boot sequence.

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select your startup volume, and run Repair Permissions. Then reboot as usual.

  • Safe Boot issue..?

I'm planning to go to Mavericks soon as 10.9.1 arrives, and this turns up...
I have done a safe boot for the first time ever, following Apple's directions exactly, many times over, and this keeps happening:
Either- 1- Shift key pressed after gong- get a gray circle with a slash, then a little bit of a terminal like language, white letters on black, then a gray screen with several languages saying i restarted because i had a problem, hit the shift key and it goes into the finder and asks if I want to report a problem. .. there is an apple or two that comes up in the process as well, hard to get it all, goes pretty fast... There seems to be a problem..?!
Or- 2- A safe boot with shift, command and V keys, i.e., verbose... it goes through a whole lot of terminal like language, then shifts straight on into the finder. when I shutdown/reboot again it gives some more terminal like language and then reboots as usual. Is this Safe Boot and is it working, and if so what is happening with 1, above..?
3- And, in both cases my startup items still start up, is that supposed to happen in safe mode..?
I'm totally perfect for a year, since new, all upgrades, etc., lots of complex use, software, and all still seems totally fine every way, all rebooting, everything even now, except that now in this first try at a safe boot this occures, something I've never been moved to do before... yikes..?
AND now particularly, when I'm planning to go to Mavericks, and concerned how this might affect that..?

    Solution to problem found:
Got to looking around, and found this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5425709?start=0&tstart=0
    The gist is this:
The OS X 10.8.5 update, at least for a lot of folks, made the mach_kernel visible and relocated it to the Documents folder.  It needs to be in the root folder, must be there same folder as system and applications, and it is usually invisible there.
I remembered finding it in the Documents folder and tossing it in the trash.  Fortunately I hadn't emptied the trash yet.  I simply moved it to the root folder, rebooted as added insurance repaired permissions, rebooted again, and now all is well, perfect safe boot and everything.  I never did a safe boot before so had no idea it loped the way it does.  Pretty cool…
As an added bonus, what got me to trying a safe boot was that the latest Office update wouldn't recognize mountain lion, it thought i was running something prior to 10.5.x, so it wouldn't install.  It has now installed perfectly.
Additionally, per the above link/forum thread, I hid the mach_kernel again, with this command in the terminal-  sudo chflags hidden /mach_kernel  which also worked perfectly.
    All is well, yea!

  • EMac Freezes in Normal Start Up - OK under Safe Boot 10.3.9 or 10.4.11

In helping a charter school get its eMacs back running, one of these eMacs [(ATI Graphics w/32Mb VRAM), 1.25GHz G4, 37GB HD, 1Gb RAM, and whose SN = G8429CDSQJ8] is displaying very unusual symptoms. It simply has to be software or a very weird RAM or VRAM memory issue, but I am mystified as to whose since I found no Firmware Updates at Apple or ATI. Here is the gory story.
I had replaced its battery and added a 1Gb DIMM (About This Mac and System Profiler show this is OK). I repaired the HD from a “Gray Restore DVD that was shipped with these eMacs” (got a “No Repairs Needed” from this) and its Permissions from the DVD set of 10.3.x system SW, and initially did an "archive and restore" installation. This had worked fine for all the other 10 eMacs as had going up to 2 Gb RAM.
On re-start the eMac froze and refused to eject Restore DVD. I hooked up a Firewire Cable to the ailing machine and ejected the Restore DVD after starting the ailing eMac in Target Mode. After this, I started up in Safe Boot and updated the 10.3.x Restored SW to 10.3.9 using Software Update ... things seemed fine. So, I started up in normal mode, opened System Preferences to Accounts to make sure the Student account was under agreed restrictions. As soon as the Authentication panel opened, the eMac froze, needing a Power Button shutdown … it kept doing this, and it behaved itself under Safe Boot after each freeze. I installed YASU (from a CD in Safe Boot and have used for years on my home PMMD, dual 1Ghz G4, 10.4.11), which I understand is simply a group of Unix scripts under a nice GUI and had it do all the system and web browser tasks (i.e. crons, permissions, prebinding, swap filesetc) but saved the logs and their archives.
We were upgrading all the eMacs System SW to Os 10.4.11 (starting from a 10.4.3 "Black X" commercial system disk … so from a Safe Boot, I loaded the 10.4.3 DVD, started up from it, and did an Erase and Install, so all the SW on the drive is Apple’s own. PRAM was reset and amazingly, on this re-start, this eMac froze a few seconds after a App’s window opened. From a new Safe Boot, Software Update took me to 10.4.11 (I refused to allow Safari, iTunes and Quick Time update until it had also updated all the other security and Java (9 Javas of these in numerical order from SUD).
Under Safe Boot, I found I can open as many as 10 Apps or Utilities, flip between the windows … nothing wrong. After some thought, I used Activity Monitor, Disk Utility (to perform “Erase Free Space, 7X” and with Screen Saver’s Flurry at maximum in the Choice window, and this places the processor use at almost 100% (~70-75% user + ~20% system) … but this does not test much of the memory (couldn’t figure out how to do this). I kept things going for over 7 hours while randomly using Safari or Text Edit. But as soon as a Normal Restart is done and a second window opens (even Activity Monitor’s little floater), it freezes again.
The Web is full of symptoms that usually blame memory, but it seems hard to believe that the 1Gb DIMM would “know” when the system is booted Normal vs Safe. So, tonight, I am going to run Rember (v. o.2b) that I dragged off my PMMD … an have used it under 10.4.11 over the years.
BTW, contents of Trash after two (2) hard freezes are always the same system files [annex_aux, annex.db, filetoken.db, fonts.db, and qdfams.db]. The mention of “fonts.db” seems to suggest a font problem, but why … all are fresh 10.4.3 stuff.
It’s my understanding that Safe Boot allows ONLY Apple extensions and Apps to load and this is why it seems to me that the problem must be SW … somehow, somewhere.
Is there a utility that can list third party components? Does this make sense? In looking into the Preferences and Application Support there are Adobe, Macromedia prefs, fonts … which I assume came in w/ Safari since I have not added any 3rd party programs other than YASU, who tells you truthfully where its stuff is loaded
When back at the school, I plan to swap out 1Gb RAM DIMMs and/or replace the old 256Mb DIMM that was original. Also, plan to go back to the Restore Software DVDs (10.3.4 since these have more Apps that are needed): Erase (Zero Out Deleted Files) and Install to rebuild a “virgin” set of 10.3 after restarting. Then Check to see if Safe Boot is stable BEFORE trying to update to 10.4.11 (via 10.4.3 Black X).
However, if this does not make sense, I would be grateful for readers pointing out my errors and/or flawed plans.

Hi Cosmic (and, per my Southern US heritage, hope yawl are doin fine down under),
Firstly, thank you hugely for guiding me through this eMac puzzle. Your insight that under Safe Boot the ATI video extensions are turned off now has the symptoms I see matching a cause.
Last evening, I did an Erase (Zero out the HD, 1 pass) and a virgin , custom install from the eMac Media DVD that came with the machine; this took the system to Os 10.3.6, and it seemed to let me open more windows than two(2) for several passes, but it still froze, these times leaving no recovered files as a trail.
I decided to use only Apple’s Software Update, under Safe Boot, to sequentially load only system or Java UDs and not let Safari or any iApp stuff bring in foreign SW components(tis strategy caused by finding, last evening, strange troubles with the Font book not validating any font and it displaying most of these incorrectly. This font finding kept me thinking SW had to be the problem instead of heeding your and Alan Jones experience …
All well and good, and when I got to 10.3.9 with all the Java and Security Uds, I could open as many as 4 Apps, but the killer was always testing the “Flurry” screen saver … lots of video here. Yet in Safe Boot, I could open all the Apps in the folder and randomly switch between them with no issues.
Lot of driving chores today kept me from seeing your second reply till late this afternoon, but as I drove I remembered that on my now ancient Power Mac Mirror Door, 2x1Ghz, one of my partitions had 10.3.9 loaded with free Unix scientific SW and Xbench 1.1.3 and Cinebench 2003, both of which test video cards, etc. So, I loaded and made DVDs of these testing apps after running them on the PMMD in the 10.3 partition as well as my normal 10.4.11 main drive. Got them over on the eMac, checked to make sure its fonts were OK, ran the tests under Safe Boot, then saw immediate freezes under Normal Boots, and finally, logged into the Apple site and read your reasoning. Bingo!
I again checked the caps I could see and they matched your ID of them, still, even with a machinists mirror could not see the ones further in … called the school marm and told her we should consider this eM as nearly dead, use its internal organs (HD, RAM, ATA drive) and externals (Keyboards, cables) in our organ donor program. She’s agreed, so it’s a done deal.
So, tomorrow I’ll satisfy my curiosity and do the surgery to remove the innards and see if there is evidence of the caps … sure there will be. BTW, I made my living, till a good severance package induced early retirement , as a PhD level Materials Scientist/Elec Engineer (mostly in chip level packaging and several forays into flat panel electronic displays (LCDs and OLEDS(Orgainc Light Emitting Diodes)). As I looked at the circuit board, these electrolytics seem to be surface mounted, an unusual design even for its day, and I cannot imagine any “shade tree” electrician having much success trying to replace them.
Again, a thank you for your insight. I’ll just have to owe you a beer since I’m doubtful you would get one I’d drop along the seashore. Take good care … and without checking a map, I hope Brisbane is not being flooded.
    drsax
PS I forgot to mark your and Allan Jones earlier replies as Helpful which they were ... just did so. Sorry for the oversight. Owe you both a beer for sharing your experience.

  • My iMac is starting with a safe boot

Why is my iMac starting up with a safe boot?

This might stop it booting in Safe Mode. Open Terminal in Utilities and copy/paste only
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
Hit return and enter your admin pword when requested. You won't see anything entered as you type it in. Then hit return again.
(Note: I've never had this happen, so don't know if this is effective or not. Found it in another thread here for this problem. If it doesn't help, it should at least be harmless. Maybe Linc can say; he's far more Unix literate than I. OK, found where it came from:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3965882?start=0&tstart=0)
So looks like either a PRAM Reset or the Terminal command will work.

At start up it appears to be starting in Safe Boot without me wanting it to. ie grey screen, apple logo, progress bar in darker grey. This takes about 10 mins.
When it has completed this is is not actually in Safe Boot/Mode but behaves perfectly normal.
It started doing this about 3 months ago for no reason I can fathom.
I have actually started up in Safe Boot successfully to try and kick start the MBP into behaving normally, with no success. I have also reset thr PRAM etc.
Even though the MBP behaves well after start up it is annoyning that it has to take 10 mins to do so each time. Also there is obviously something wrong, which is worrying.
    Any help appreciated, Thanks.

    Thanks roam

  • G5 only starts up in Safe Boot mode

We have an older model G5 Dual (no Intel Core) at the office that we tried to install CS3 on. I told them that first we would need to upgrade from 10.3.8 to 10.4.10 -- which they did, and then installed CS3.
But they did it without running the disk utility repair permissions after the OS software installation, as I have routinely done with my Mac Mini at home, after the horror I experienced with the 10.4.9 upgrade.
For a couple of days, the computer ran fine, but I noticed an increase in the fan spinning up yesterday afternoon, then quirky keyboard things -- like I'd select an item with point and click, and it would highlight everything else near it, I'd go to quit an application and it would ask if I wanted to quit all applications. After backing up my current InDesign work files on a flash drive (but not the whole darn art folder), I rebooted and it came up in Safe Boot mode 6 times without holding any key down.
Attempts to boot from disk have failed, even with holding down the "C" key. It's also not allowing us to type out full passwords at the log-in screen... you start typing and after you hit four digits, it clears, then only allows two digits. Weird, huh?
Any suggestions on how we can:
1.) Force boot from disk, and,
2.) Hopefully fix with disk utility whatever wonkiness is occuring?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Not sure if you are still in the same position or not..
Do me a favor and switch keyboards and see what the results are.
(I have dealt with a few diff variations of this problem, and each had a seperate solution.)

  • IMac - OS X - Will Not Start / Safe Boot / Boot to CD

    Unit:
2007 iMac with OS X  ... unknown version
    Problem:
Will not boot. Upon pressing power button it attempts to go through startup procedure then grey-screen and error message (You Need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again.)
I have come to understand this is called a "Kernel Panic"
I have been researching this issue all day. I cannot get it to safe boot by pressing the shift key. It does pull a progress bar but ultimately fails and returns to the kernel panic.
I have attempted to start from the CD to attempt utility disk, but I cannot get it to boot from CD. I have held the C key down. I have pressed it repeatedly. I have used it in combination with the alt/control/command keys. All have failed.
If anyone has any idea what might can be done I thank you in advance for your assistance.
    ~Daniel

  • Brand new OS X Mountain Lion starts in grey screen login window doesn't know me verify passwords all jacked up says to get external hard drive recovery so I have to spend more moneyon my brand new computer or can I fix and safe boot

brand new OS X Mountain Lion  Bought in November 2012 starts in grey screen login window doesn't know me, went to utility dIsk ,verify passwords all jacked up, I Engaged repair passwords then press verified Macintosh HD it said Macintosh HD is OK but repair disk button was still lit up and wanted me to make a recovery disk external hard drive and such, please tell me I can fix in safe boot..

The repair button is always clickable when you are on your Recovery partition, it's nothing to worry about.  Do this instead.
Then start in single user mode (Command-S)
Type fsck -fy to check your disk first (it wont let you start working on a disk until you have checked it)
Then type mount -uw / (dont forget the slash) to mount your Macintosh HDD
Then type passwd username with username being the username of your admin account
It will make you type the new password twice afterwards. From then you can boot into OSX as normal and use that account to fix the rest of your passwords.

It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!

Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

  • My fairly new iMac has been giving me trouble with permissions. I tried to make the owner of the hard drive myself, instead of three groups I hadn't created. Now it won't start. I''ve tried safe boot and resetting the PRAM.. Nothing.

Reset the PRAM, safe boot, removed everything but the key
    board. Gray spinning wheel.
It started with me trying to change permissions. I'm the
owner, yet it would give me problem when moving files from desktop to hard drive.
Now it says library extensions are missing. I never
    touched the library.

Hi Ralph - likely you're right. The section below, taken from their site, looked like it may offer some hope:
    Unlock what is rightfully yours
BatChmod can also give you back access to locked files, folders or disks. If something is locked, it can unlock it. If you no longer have permissions to files or folders, change the permissions back.
Sometimes, a whole hard disk can become inaccessible or locked and often, BatChmod can unlock those too!
If you moved a folder or files from another machine or another user on your machine, BatChmod can help set you up as their rightful owner.
As you say, a re-install is probably the best way to go, but I thought that given that nothing's working correctly now it might be worth a go. If it fails desiree274 can still proceed with a re-install.

  • Safe boot vs normal start up

I used the safe boot feature to fix a glitch but i want to go back to my normal start up. how do i do that?

Just reboot. The shift key is needed for each safe boot. If it is not pressed, you get a normal boot.
