Safe downloads being blocked

Attachments and downloads that I know are safe are being blocked because they are being identified as containing a virus.  Can you tell me how to stop this from happening?  I right clicked on file, but continue to get message:  Scarb_Age_Gender.xls
contained a virus and was deleted.

Hello,
I'd ask in the Virus and Malware forum or the
Windows forum on Microsoft Community.

  • I'm trying to download Adobe Flash Player, but the yellow bar with the 'Allow' button doesn't come up, so the programme is being blocked, giving me no ability to unblock it.

A bar is supposed to come up, when I'm trying to download Adobe Flash Player. The bar is supposed to have an option to 'Allow' the download. The programme is being blocked and is not downloading, but the bar doesn't come up, so I'm unable to enable its download.

The instructions you are referring to are out of date and not the ideal way to install / update Flash.
    Instead:
    # Download (save to your desktop) http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe
    # Download http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe
    # Close Firefox
    # Run uninstall_flash_player.exe, click through to uninstall any old versions of Flash
    # Run install_flash_player.exe to install Flash.

  • Safe downloads list

With Mac Defender the Safe Downloads List has become better know.  However, I do have a question about it.  All the descriptions on Apple's web site about this, naturally, speak of when downloading using Safari.  Like a number of others I like to use FireFox and Google Chrome.  Is anything done in either of these browsers to use the Safe Downloads List to protect us?
Unless, it is implemented in some OS feature used by all browsers to download and open files, this is not Apple's responsibility.  If it is up to the browser to deal with this, I want to encourage those browser providers to add this feature to the Mac OSX implementation.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

the defintions of Apple add MD5/SHA checksums to the Installer feature of OSX directly, so bad apps / malware is being fingerprinted as "block them".  The list contains various versions of MacDefender as well as a handful others.
So say, if Macdefender version xyz find its way onto your OSX ( regardless which Browser has let it slipped through ) it can not install itseld, it will be blocked by OSX itself to launch its installation mechanism.
Vice versa this means : every installation package you launch is first being scanned by OSX if it matches the present fingerprints of the bad apps. And only if it is given the "clean" status, the actual install process is beginning.
It is the same way like traditional Antivirus Defintions work. Blacklist and Whitelist.  Of course this is a cat and mouse race between the Software Vendors and the criminals. Apple will include every known fingerprint into their defintions and push them out to the OSX boxes daily, but therefore at least one known new bad app has to be known ( at least one machine needs to be infected to know the checksum of the newer installer and to include its checksum to the updates ..)
Yes the web is a ugly place.. no OS is safe from those threats these days. Would Linux see a rise in usage, they would target that too.

  • Cannot connect to the iTunes store. Get 'Error 11222'. Claims it is being blocked by Windows Firewall when it is allowed through.

When an external application tries to connect to it through iTunes I get 'Error: 11222'. When I try to connect through the iTunes app it just continuously loads but nothing appears. Diagnostics says that Windows Firewall (Which is being managed by McAfee) is blocking it, even though it is allowed through both firewalls I have. Even when I turn WF off iTunes claims it is being blocked by it. I have done almost everything Apple's support pages have suggested but nothing has worked. I'm using it on an Acer Aspire laptop, and the main PC can use iTunes without trouble so it isn't the ISP. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes twice. Here is a full diagnostics:

The 11222 errors can sometimes be produced by LSP trouble. One of the suspects with that is some versions of McAfee Family Protection. For troubleshooting advice, see the following document:

  • Safe download box in safari preferences?

Is it a good idea to uncheck the safe download box the safari preferences?  I 've seen people talk about this & I'm new to the mac world.   THANKS!

    JoeJoe
Yes it is highly advised to uncheck the safe download. It could cause your Mac to download and install malware, or spyware on your Mac. You want to be in total control of what is being download from the Internet. Take a look at Mac 101. Welcome to the world of Macs and the Apple support forums. Hope your experience will be an enjoyable one.

  • Java is being blocked

I just got a pop up saying Java is being blocked.
It says something about Firefox has found out that Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U31 6.0.310.5 is causing stability or security problems.
It's just popped up randomly while I was watching YouTube videos.

Alright, let's try a few things here.
First, update to Firefox 11. Firefox 3.6 will be dropped from support in a few weeks, which means it will no longer be receiving security or stability updates. Firefox 11 is up to 7 times faster than 3.6, has lots of new features and improvements, as well as support for new web standards. [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/features/ http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/features/] and [[Updating Firefox|Updating Firefox]] have more information.
After that, go into Start, then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs. Look for Java on this list. There may be several entries, and they maybe labeled different versions (jave 6, java 1.5, etc.). Uninstall then all. Then, restart your computer.
Download Java from [http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=62313 http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=62313], install it. Then, your flash is out of date as well, so download the updated version from [http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_11_plugin_32bit.exe http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_11_plugin_32bit.exe]. After doing this, restart your Pc again, and let me know if you are still having problems.

  • I am being blocked from my "favorites"on my iPad 2 with the following....... You are not authorized to open this file. What do I need to do

I'm being blocked from my favorites on my iPad 2 with the following........... You are not authorized to open this file. What do I do?

I'm not sure whether you have tried the "usual" things:
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Command+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
    * Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * classic Tools menu > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

I have purchased a new PC and am being blocked from accessing my itunes account why???

You are being blocked how ?
If you mean that your library isn't showing then it won't automatically appear on it. You can authorise your iTunes account on it via the Store > Authorise This Computer menu option (with iTunes 11 pressing Alt-S should get the Store menu to appear). You will then need to either download your content onto it (what you can re-download will show under Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage), or copy if from your old computer or your backup.

  • PDF file being blocked by Firewall

I have 3 PDF files our of thousands that are being blocked by my companies firewall. None of the others are being blocked. We have re-created these files on different machines, with different names and still noluck. Outside our firewall they can be downloaded.
Has anyone run into this before?

It's not an Adobe problem, it's something with your firewall configuration - and therefore not something we can help with here. Most enterprise-level firewall software has some kind of log to say why it blocked a file (i.e. which rule triggered).

  • Strange issue, I can't update my CS3 InDesign because it's being blocked by a QuickCam file

My InDesign updates are not able to complete because its being blocked by a quickcam / logitech file ( QuickCam_11.90.1263\setup.exe ) - I've removed the file through Add / Remove programs, I've searched and deleated all quickcam / logitech files several times, then re-searcherd to confirm the files are gone and deleated from trash. However, each time I try to run the InDesign update the quickcam file is back.... after I deleted it?  It's like the InDesign update reloads it.  help!  I can find my way past this.

Sounds like a virus. But probably isn't. Some software is probably re-installing it. Try removing the your camera from the computer and disabling any software that works with the camera, then reboot and try. If that doesn't work try a safe boot.
