Safe downloads list

With Mac Defender the Safe Downloads List has become better know. However, I do have a question about it. All the descriptions on Apple's web site about this, naturally, speak of when downloading using Safari. Like a number of others I like to use FireFox and Google Chrome. Is anything done in either of these browsers to use the Safe Downloads List to protect us?
Unless, it is implemented in some OS feature used by all browsers to download and open files, this is not Apple's responsibility. If it is up to the browser to deal with this, I want to encourage those browser providers to add this feature to the Mac OSX implementation.
Thanks,
Bruce

the defintions of Apple add MD5/SHA checksums to the Installer feature of OSX directly, so bad apps / malware is being fingerprinted as "block them". The list contains various versions of MacDefender as well as a handful others.
So say, if Macdefender version xyz find its way onto your OSX ( regardless which Browser has let it slipped through ) it can not install itseld, it will be blocked by OSX itself to launch its installation mechanism.
Vice versa this means : every installation package you launch is first being scanned by OSX if it matches the present fingerprints of the bad apps. And only if it is given the "clean" status, the actual install process is beginning.
It is the same way like traditional Antivirus Defintions work. Blacklist and Whitelist. Of course this is a cat and mouse race between the Software Vendors and the criminals. Apple will include every known fingerprint into their defintions and push them out to the OSX boxes daily, but therefore at least one known new bad app has to be known ( at least one machine needs to be infected to know the checksum of the newer installer and to include its checksum to the updates ..)
Yes the web is a ugly place.. no OS is safe from those threats these days. Would Linux see a rise in usage, they would target that too.

My computer won't let me select "automatically update safe downloads list" What am I doing wrong?

You are correct that is what I'm talking about. I did install it.
Now I can't get the check box in the preferences security panel under the tab "general" that allows "automatically update safe downloads list" to stay checked. Each time I unlock and check the box and then relock and close, the check mark disapears. This is the problem.

• HT3662 On my OS X v10.7.5 there is no "Automatically update safe downloads lists"

On my OS X v10.7.5 there is no "Automatically update safe downloads lists" in the advanced security settings. There is however "Automatically install important security updates". I've ran every available update for my MAC, but the security features have not changed. How can I get this to update?

• Appending Outlook safe senders list via GPO

I am trying to append a known safe email address to my list of 'Safe Senders' in Outlook 2007 and 2010.
In our GPO I went into the ADM file for Office 2010, edited the Options > Preferences > Junk Email > Specify path to safe senders list
In there I put the UNC of our server which would be similar to \\comboi\home$\admin\SafeSenders.txt
But when I get my new policy, and then start Outlook the email address isn't added.......could it be a permission issue on the admin folder? What would it need to be set as?
Has anyone done this and maybe offer a direction to look in? Or if you know what it is, that would be great! :)
Thanks

Hi,
Here are the steps to publish a safe senders list through group policy. The first two steps are not required, but recommend for this solution.
1) Set expectations that even after implementing this policy, you cannot guarantee that the issue will never happen again.
2) Allow domain.com through any centralized spam filtering systems.
3) Create a .txt file that stores a list of safe senders (domains or addresses) each on a new line
4) Save the .txt file to a file share that is accessible by all clients. I put it on \\DC\Netlogon
5) Add the Office 2010 Administrative Template (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=64b837b6-0aa0-4c07-bc34-bec3990a7956&displaylang=en)
to group policy.
6) Create a new GPO for customizing Outlook or Office.
7) In the GPO go to User Configuration>Policies>Administrative Templates>Microsoft Office Outlook 2010> Options > Preferences > Junk Email
8) Open Specify path to Safe Senders list
9) Set this policy to enabled and specify that path to the .txt file you saved in step 4.
10) Now, here was the catch. This setting indeed tells Outlook where to locate the import file. It does not, however, tell Outlook to actually go import the file. This is done through a registry key. So in the same GPO navigate to User Configuration>Preferences>Windows
Settings>Registry
11) Right Click Registry and select New Registry Item.
12) Set the properties to the following:
Action: Update
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key Path:Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
Value Name: JunkMailImportLists
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data:1
Base: Decimal
Apply the group policy, and the next time GP is updated on the client and Outlook is restarted, the safe sender list will be imported.
Hope it helps.

• How can I remove something from my iTunes download list permanently?

Same as title: how can I remove something from my download list FOREVA! Why would I want to do this? Because it's a piece of poo free sampler from Best Buy that is effing huge, and terrible and I don't want it, ever (it's been stuck to my list since 08, and it must die). Every time I buy something I have to remember to go and remove that from my list, otherwise iTunes gets caught up downloading that thing, which is many times larger than any video/cd/app that I have ever downloaded on iTunes before. It wouldn't be as much an issue if I had a good ISP but I don't, so any non-apple employee people giving some smarmy "get better internets" advice need not apply.

Once an item enters the download queue, the user cannot remove it. Either let it complete the download (easiest) or contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the Contact page and ask them if they'll remove the item(s) from your queue for you.

• I have my download list but I deleted the file on my computer and want it back, is there a way of using the list to get it back?

I have the download list for firefox but accidentally deleted the file on my computer. I need the file and was wondering if there was a way of using the download list to access the file somehow, I don't think the file os on the internet either as I haven't found it

Hello!
Go to the downloads window, right-click, and click "copy download link" or "go to download page". You should then be able to re-download it only if it's still in the downloads window

Thanks for taking a stab at it: that didn't prove to be the problem. That option in the settings for tabbed browsing was not checked.
I may be a bit behind the times: I am used to tabbed browsing showing all the tabs it possibly can, instead of just the last one. Sometimes it won't even show the last tab: I can have 15 tabs open, and not see a single tab. I've been confused by this into closing a window with lots of tabs open, because it looks like a single page-window.
My main problem with the tab-bar flashing to the end of the row is that it means a great deal more mouse-clicking around to browse.
I haven't tried installing the latest beta. Maybe that would fix the problem.

• Itunes download list not updating

Hi, I have got an odd problem. I have an Ipod touch, which recently finished a batch of 250 downloads, I was expectting the ipod to get the next lot of downloads in terms of the downloads list automatically, but this has failed. I have tried pressing the downloads icon, which makes the ipod think for a bit and possibly talk with the itunws store, but the problem is according to Itunes I've got 199 downloads to download, but according to my ipod I have none.
I don't think I've changed any settings, and I was wondering if anyone else has experinced a similar problem and can tell me how to solve this, as I don't want t lug a laptop into town just to get to the Cambridge Genius Bar, to solve this when it weighs a tone it feels like and in addition, it could cause me extra problems on the mobility front on the top of the probvlems I have already so, if you can help it would save a lot of hassle and carryng a very heavy laptop especially on the buses.

Hi, Simply our connection is very slow, and downloading on the ipod means I can make use of high speed wifi hotstpots especially the free ones which just don't max out our connection especially one time when the total downloads reached 30gb which includes Itunes and this is what I want to avoid and as my laptop is just too heavy to cart around with me, using the Ipod is the omly real option to avoid making out a home connection which can cause problems for other people in the famiy.

• How do you open the downloads that have been saved? I can make it to the download list but it will not let me open any of them.

When I open an email with an attachment, it downloads the attachment and saves it to my downloads. At a later time, I return to the download list and try to open it and it will not allow me to open them. How do I open my saved downloads?

If the Open or Open Containing Folder entry in the right-click context menu of a file in the Download Manager is grayed then that means that the file is no longer in that original download location. It may have been removed by cleanup software or anti-virus software if you haven't deleted the files yourself.

• Safe download box in safari preferences?

Is it a good idea to uncheck the safe download box the safari preferences? I 've seen people talk about this & I'm new to the mac world. THANKS!

JoeJoe
Yes it is highly advised to uncheck the safe download. It could cause your Mac to download and install malware, or spyware on your Mac. You want to be in total control of what is being download from the Internet. Take a look at Mac 101. Welcome to the world of Macs and the Apple support forums. Hope your experience will be an enjoyable one.

• Is there a way to protect the download list and/or history so they can't be cleared/deleted?

I use the same computer as the rest of my family. Although I am ostensibly the administrator I use the family logon for normal use. I ask the rest of my family to not clear the download list because I like to keep track of what's been downloaded in case something with a virus or something like that is downloaded. I also like to keep track of the web sites my children access, so I would like to keep the History as well. Unfortunately, my oldest has learned how to delete history that she doesn't want me to see. Is there something in Firefox, or Mozilla in general, that can allow me to keep the things and if so how would I proceed?

Use security software or a router with a build-in password protected logging feature if you want to keep a record of visited websites.
You can't prevent people from deleting the history and other personal (private) data in Firefox and a log elsewhere will always work even if other browser would be used.

• Download list button in upper right corner hinds under "Reader" button? Unable to find down loaded file in the download folder afterward?

Hey Sgt.Rics,
It sounds like you're experiencing some unexpected behavior in Safari, specifically the window layout blocking the Downloads button. I would check and make sure no third-party add-ons are causing the issue:
