Safe mode at startup

Issue safe mode at startup bar if mouse and keyboard bluetooth are off, bat if connected after going all to be ok.

new detailed crash
I dumped the profile folder and opened a new one, started recreating all the accounts one by one
It still crashes, but only twice today
I could send a detailed report (apple) in .txt from last occurrence, no thunderbird crash report as
"[Wed Dec 24 17:11:51 2014] Crash report submission failed: The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be “crash-reports.mozilla.com” which could put your confidential information at risk."

  • Key combination to get into Safe Mode on startup

My PowerBook froze up early this morning while I was working on a project. I went to restart it and it now starts up to a grey screen with a spinning gear. I do not have time to wait for AppleCare to come online today since the project is due later on today and I need to finish the it. I talked to AppleCare previously about this issue and they walked me through it, but I do not remember how, as it was about six months ago. The KnowledgeBase on Apple's website only works for Mac OS 10.3.9 and earlier, I am running 10.4.5 or 10.4.6. My question is, How can I get into Safe Mode on startup?

Uhh... (command + s) boots into single-user mode on startup.
To get into safe mode, hold down "Shift" after you turn the computer on and hear the startup chime. Don't let go till you see the spinning gear.

  • Can't boot in safe mode - RAID startup disk

    hi ..
my macpro has a mirrored RAID as a startup disk (using HD bay 1 & 2) ... i am trying to boot into safe mode but this does not work at all, even when holding down the shift key it starts up in normal user mode.
Is there a way to do this ? is it maybe possible to boot into safe mode with a terminal command ? or any other way ?
thx for any help with this ...

    Hallo
This topic is quite old, but I face exactly the same issue.
My MacPro tries to boot in safe mode, but restarts and boots in normal mode afterwards.
There are messages in system.log that indicate to me that the kernel exensions on the boot helper volumes are different from the ones on the main partition:

    Dec 19 21:06:17 localhost kextd[11]: in-memory mkext doesn't match on-disk mkext; non-boot kexts won't be loaded
    I tried:
    sudo kextcache -v 6 -f -u /
Which updates the kernel extensions on the boot helper volume,
    but it does not work.
As for the firware updates, I could still install those booting from external FW disk.

  • Firefox closes in regular and safe mode on startup AND does not submit a crash report.

Here's what I know. Every time I open Windows (looks like Windows 7 SP, 64 bit) and open Firefox (15.0.1), my browser closes within a few seconds. Sometimes, it seems this is precipitated by navigating to a new page, but I can't say that for sure. After closing, I can re-open it and run it just fine. However, as it does this every time on the first load, it is really annoying.
I have tried putting it in safe mode, but that makes no difference. I have scanned for viruses and malware. After removing the 1 thing I found, I still continue to have this problem. There are no crash reports submitted when this happens. Thoughts?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works.

  • 'Famous' blue screen at startup AND safe mode boot failure

    Dear all,
Two days ago, after installing the new Java update/airport update and restarting, I encountered a 'blue screen' on startup after getting past the mac symbol and swirling cog. I cannot say whether the updates were the cause (doubtful) of if my cheap USB mouse that was still plugged it caused it or whether i have the dreaded 'bad sectors.' The cause aside, here is what i've tried to fix the issue:
    1) Disk Utility - Verification (OK'd) and Repairs (fine)
    2) Disk Utility - Verification of Permissions (a few needed to be done) All repaired
    -blue screen-
    -Restart after period-
    3) Rebooting in safe mode, removing startup items from the login items settings menu
    4) Removing startup items from System/Library/StartupItems folders
    5) Remove airport extensions (recent - date modified in list view)
(NB - safe mode i could say my desktop perfectl in original form and all files!)
    -Restart-
-no longer able to start in safe mode-
    -blue screen remains-
    6)Single User mode -
resetting preference files (loginwindow.plist and windowserver.plist)
Finally system profiler from Tiger DVD states:
    *Permissions repaired
*Dependency errors: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily & com.apple.kernel.iokit no valid version found
    *Integrity: kext has no receipt
I backed up most my data from the LAST crash, but recent music/1000 photos and others have been backed up altho i've been meaning to! Help!
I'M PANICKING now can no longer get in SAFE MODE!!
    Please help Mac911!!!!

    Update:
So, I managed to do ALL that you said, EXCEPT, the reboot and work fine business.
I created the admin account which works fine. So now I can see three user accounts (looks like there as already an admin type one).
The one I created works fine, only, I can only access/see the login screen through a safe boot, (otherwise blue screens...) . I can get into the admin account fine, but when restarting and logging in as my original user account it won't boot. Something is very wrong in MY user account. I think at this point my data there is still retrievable somehow for a backup, clean start. but i haven't reached that point yet.
Anyone have any clues what migt have caused the error in my user login?
One of the things I tried (too hastily now i admit) first was to remove the recently added updates from the extensions folder. has this exacerbated the problem? Can i put them back without logging in as me??
remember from my first post system profiler says software/extensions integrity 'kext has no receipt' and dependency errors: 'com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily and com.apple.kernel.iokit; no valid version found' - whereas in my newly created admin account it appears AOK.
    is this the source?
    any ideas anyone?
sorry lots of queries here but i am ever hopeful.....
    All yours,

  • Windows 7 fails to go into safe mode. Stuck at classpnp.sys

Hi, I wanted to go into safe mode on windows 7 but it kept stopping at classpnp.sys . After reading a few threads I read about using Msconfig and checking the safe mode option under "Boot". It still keeps staying at classpnp.sys and when I hit F8 and hit "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" it seems to be able to get trough and it says it's actually loading up safe mode but then it changes to a black screen and does not change from that screen. I would appreciate and information you guys have that could solve this problem. If any of you know a command I could type in cmd to bring up the msconfig while in repair mode I  could fix it because all I need to do is untick "Safe mode on startup"

This happened to me because I tried to install Fallout 3 too. I tried doing the c:\windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys to classpnp.old but then it just stops at the one before and goes on to say windows is starting in safe mode but then it shuts off and restarts.
Glad to hear tat Fallout 3 is still being played.
Firstly there are a few things that I have discovered. Classpnp.sys causes a few problems with the system. As I don't know what your system or brand of computer you are using, I'm not sure exactly what advice to give. However it should work a little something like this. When you start your computer you will see the brand name of the company who built the system (ie. Acer, HP, Compaq etc) Press either alt  + F10 or alt + F11.
This will bring you to a recovery type menu. From here you can do a system restore you will loose any un-backed up data. This trick will restore your systems factory defaults systems. I have not been able to try this myself yet.
Also depending on your what OS you are using you could try and and get a hold of either the Vista or Windows 7 recovery disks.
You can download them from here:
    http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
You will need a burning software as recovery disks need to be on disk so you can boot it up during windows start up.
    Use this software: ImgBurn
    http://www.imgburn.com/
Its free and is very effective (I can see this having more use with other iso files of mine)
Again I have been unable to try this myself.
And the last option short of formatting the drive is to use another piece of software called Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop.
This is freeware that needs to be downloaded (http://www.ubuntu.com/) and then burnt on to a disk using the ImgBurn mentioned above.
Put the disk into the drive and but it up during windows start up.
You also need to download a replacement classpnp.sys file. You get this from http://www.hotfile123.com/index.php?q=classpnp+sys
(I also haven't tested this file yet but there other options on the site)
While using Ubuntu find the classpnp.sys (C:\windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys) rename this to classpnp.bak
Copy the recently downloaded version of the classpnp.sys to replace the old one.
Exit and restart. The computer may lag a bit but should eventually boot into safe mode.
Sadly I haven't been able to try this yet either.
Although none of this helps with getting fallout 3 to install any easier.
I will post with my progress and with what works in the near future. Hope any else can do the same.
    Good luck.

  • IMac freeze after startup, works fine in safe mode

Hello, my Mid 2010 iMac is freezing  about 3 minutes after startup. Ive tried booting from the instal disk and repairing it but it didnt work. In safe mode it works completely fine. It similar to some other peoples problem but i was hoping someone could help me, my applecare literally just ran out like 3 weeks ago.

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.
    Thanks,

  • Imac freezing on startup, fine in safe mode

Hi there - apologies in advance if I just need to be directed to another thread I've had a look around and can't find what to do now that I'm in safe mode.
My Imac keeps freezing either at the password screen or as soon as I've logged in.
Am I right in thinking that, given that safemode is working without problem, the issue is probably software?
One other thing that might be relevant, I am currently trying to do a time machine backup but it has been stuck on Preparing Backup for about 15 mins now.
I need advice on how I isolate the issue.
    Many thanks.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • IMac G5 – Won't startup except in Safe Mode (10.5.5). Otherwise Blue Screen

I’ve had my iMac (pre-iSight) for about 3 years now and up until recently never had any major problems with it, despite using it for about 12 hours per day, every day.. A couple of minor problems however had developed, but several months ago and didn’t seem to affect the system:
    (1) Software update stopped working (had to download & install updates manually) &
    (2) Couldn’t verify or repair permissions (even pre 10.5.5. Even when I tried to repair them from another startup disk, the message I got was ‘no package receipts’ – although I could see that they were there in the “receipts” library folder)
A couple of days ago I decided to try and fix the problems by erasing my startup disk (after backing up all my data of course) and re-installing 10.5 from the installation DVD and then bringing the system up to date. At the time I did this I hadn’t upgraded or installed any new software for several weeks.
For about one day after that it worked fine. The only ‘alarming’ thing that I noticed during that day was that whilst playing a movie the CPU temperature rose to about 89 C. (I use Temperature Monitor). I read somewhere that the CPU temperature should not exceed 85 for this model and that if it did the system would either shutdown or go to sleep, so I was surprised to see it go as high as 89 (assuming that the right temperature was being reported) before it went to sleep. However, even after that it, it started up correctly a couple of times.
Since then it will only boot in Safe mode, and when it does it carries on working indefinitely without any problems. The only thing that I lose in safe mode which seems odd – in addition to all the things that I know I should lose – is Audio. The preferences panel says: no input, output devices attached (ie not even the ones built-in).
If I try a normal start up, the system will go through the grey screen, apple logo, spinning ‘cog’ etc and then almost always go to a blue screen where it stays put. There is a black cursor in the top left corner which, when I try to move it, duplicates itself so that I end up with 2 cursors – one which moves and one which stays in the top left corner.
On very rare occasions (about 1 time in 20) during a normal startup the system will get past the blue screen and to my desktop (in fact this happened several times consecutively before I got to the point where I could only startup in Safe Mode). However, moving the cursor into the menu bar or into the dock would result in the whole screen freezing – the cursor would move, but nothing else would happen). Also I would see that several pixels were ‘missing’ from the desktop. The desktop is normally solid green, but I would see 3 or 4 red and black pixels.
I’ve studied all the forum topics that even remotely resemble my problem and tried just about everything I can think of including:
    1. Resetting SMU & PRAM (repetitively)
    2. Running the Apple Hardware Test – All tests passed
    3. Replacing the PRAM battery
    4. Check that the fans are working (I can hear them and when I take the back off, both fans spin)
    5. Erased the disk again, installed the OS from the installation DVD, so that there is no third party software on the system. (and then tried a normal boot both with the original 10.5.1 and 10.5.5 after applying the combo update).
    6. I have several external disks with several copies of the OS on various partitions, including a 10.4.11, but trying to boot from any of those ends with the same result. I can only boot in safe mode, other wise I get a blue screen (or very rarely it will squeak through to the desktop & then immediately freeze).
Always the same result – safe boot only.
From reading through the various topics, I get the feeling that my problem may be related to the graphics card, but if that is the case I don’t understand why the system will always boot in safe mode and then run without any problems all day. It even allows me to play movies: very jerky (and no sound), both when I move the QT window and the images themselves, but it still plays.
Any thoughts on what the problem might be (other than fatal) would be greatly appreciated. Or an explanation why, if it is the graphics card, the system will continue working after safe boot.
I’ve copied out the system details from Profiler that I think are relevant below.

    Many thanks for your help

I had a very similar problem with my 20" iMac G5 ALS running 10.4.11. It began with random freezing inside the OS and intermittent slow booting, but quickly progressed (over a matter of days) to hanging at the blue screen before the logon window, just as you described.
I too, found that booting in Safe Mode was successful. I ruled out the airport card by manually installing that kernel extension in Safe Mode. A check of the logs pointed to "ATY" which I've since found out is a reference to the ATI drivers, which brought me to this post.
At least on my system--and I have tested this on Tiger (10.4 and 10.4.11) and Leopard (10.5 and 10.5.6), the only .kext that needs to be removed / renamed is ATIRadeon9700.kext. My preferred method of doing this is to drop to the terminal and type:
    sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext.disabled
This preserves the relevant permissions and ownership, which you'd otherwise have to reset manually if you copy the file elsewhere and then delete the original in the Finder, and then want to restore it to its original condition, BTW:
    sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext
    sudo chown -R 0:0 /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext
Any OS X update will replenish the file, so you should be at the ready to reboot into Safe Mode the first time and rename the file again.
The downside to all this is that the video acceleration doesn't work, so graphics operations are slow and jerky, but at least everything else seems to be okay, in my case anyway.
Popping open the case did indeed reveal four bulging capacitors. I bit the bullet and purchased some replacements, part number 647-UHN0J182MPD from Mouser:
    http://mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=pjJ%252bhmlZec6zHXGt6EoiHw%3d%3d
Although I wasn't looking forward to desoldering my logic board, I wasn't real hopeful that I'd have success getting the local Apple shop to replace it under warranty either. I did find some helpful information on performing the fix yourself:
    http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
And I do want to be able to sell this thing for at least a little cash to help offset the cost of a new quad-core iMac, whenever they're released.
Fortunately, for me, the service tech at the Genius Bar at the local Apple store agreed to fix it under the power and video extended warranty, even though it was slightly outside of the warranty period, due to the fact that I had brought it in about a year ago and had the power supply replaced under the same warranty.
I almost didn't bother to bring the machine in because it's a real nasty day here today, and I figured they'd just tell me "That'll be $800 to fix it," and I'd end up doing surgery on the logic board anyway in addition to carrying the thing up and down the steps to my condo. Boy am I glad I did, though. Apple customer service rocks.

  • At odd times I will get a second instance of Firefox startup. I have run avast av, spybot, malwarebytes, both in normal and safe mode and nothing has been found, any ideas?

at odd times I will get a second instance of Firefox startup. I have run avast av, spybot, malwarebytes, both in normal and safe mode and nothing has been found, any ideas?

That second one sounds like malware.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

  • How long should I let Safe Mode startup run? I keep getting the "disk0s2 i/o error" message and I'm just not sure when to give up and try a different method. I already ran disk utility in Recovery Mode and it said there were no repairs needed.

You have limited opportunity to attempt to create a backup of your created files.
That is what the SafeBoot or safemode appears to allow you -- at the moment.
Since the hard disk drive exhibits signs of failure or other major issues, plan
on a replacement in the near future. You may be able to get the computer to
start up in a regular full OS X (not safe mode) but consider its hours are limited.
An externally enclosed hard disk drive (with own power supply, not relying on
Mac ports to run it) is a good basic means of which to use a disk utility to make
a copy or a Clone of the current OS X. This may help retrieve an archive that
could be used along with a Time Machine backup, to restore your Mac once you
get a new hard drive installed inside.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Firefox hangs on startup (even in safe-mode) and no sessionstore.js file to edit.

After a system restart due to Firefox seeming to act strangely, it hangs as soon as I open it. The tab says "Connecting..." but it eventually just stops responding.
Safe-mode doesn't work either, but private browsing is okay (which obviously I'd rather not use primarily.)
I had a few tabs open and I suspect one of them might be a pain for session restore to open, so I figured I would go try to snag it from the sessionstore.js but unfortunately I apparently don't have one.
I tried enabling the "ask before restoring tabs" feature but that didn't help either.

'''Edit: I used private browsing to change the settings to open a blank page on startup and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much! :)'''
    Thanks for the quick reply!
Will changing that setting work from either private browsing or another profile? Because my default profile just freezes instantly, can't even get to options. :/
The URL I thought might be causing problems was http://brennadaugherty.tumblr.com/ ... I have no idea why it would. I also had http://brennahaspixels.tumblr.com/ open and since that has tons of little images on it that seems more likely but the problem started with that first URL.
I actually started a new profile and transferred everything else over to it and it works fine, but it would be nice to figure out what happened to the first. :/
