Safe mode plus serial port
My computer can only boot in the safe mode (logic board failure). No problem except I would like to have a serial port working. A USB external disk works fine. So how can it be made to work? Trying to load a kext for the serial port using terminal does not work. LoadKext does not add kext.
What can be done here?
"Logic Board Failure" usually indicates a large sub-system not a single item. Like the whole USB system might be dead. Or the whole PCI bus. Or the sound system. etc.
I doubt Apple will encourage you to hack up OSX to bypass the dead hardware. Its certailly possible to custom config FreeBSD/Darwin. It might be beyound your comfort level though.
A good experiment would be to download the current Ubuntu Linux Desktop Install CD (ubuntu.com). Because this CD can also boot Ubuntu Linux Desktop so you can try it out.
A handy way to see what is actually wrong, since the Ubuntu boot system tests all hardware. Apple Hardware test would tell you what is wrong too.
My point here is that if Ubuntu works, then you can wipe the drive and install that. Because there is LOTS of documentation on the web for customizing Ubuntu, making it easy to NOT load a driver for the not working hardware.
I wander around my neighborhood on garbage day and grab old computers that look undabled. They are free. And as I said, they have no trobule running Linux or FreeBSD.

USB ports not working in safe mode
I am trying to back up my computer before i take it to the apple store and i cant back up in safe mode using time machine, becuase im guess the USB ports arent working. Are there any solutions to this problem?
Ok, where is this Intel driver? There is no such thing "program manager" so I am guessing you mean the Programs and features control panel, but on my machine that whole window is blank after a clean install. I still cannot get the USB ports to activate. Two fresh installs and several different USB sticks later and no luck. Should I just give up and go to Windows 8.1? I really need Windows 7 to work if at all possible. Other devices shows one USB controller without driver software so I suppose that's the culprit. There are other USB devices installed under the USB section of Device Manager, but they apparently have nothing to do with the USB ports themselves, just devices like the trackpad etc. I've spent two hours on this so far and it's getting out of control. Why doesn't this work with generic USB drivers?

I have macbook without a firewire port, I have usb 2.0 port, now my os is not working I can not get through apple logo loading , I can not enter safe mode, I can only enter one user mode, how can I backup my data, I have very important data in my hdd
Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc. -

This also happened in Windows XP which I was using until recently.
The Yahoo mail menu is there but the Firefox menu is on top of it. I tried Firefox safe mode with everything disabled and the problem still happened. I tried Yahoo mail in IE 9 and the right mouse button works correctly. Can you attach a screenshot?
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).<br />
If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.<br />
You can click the Maximize button at the top right to leave full screen mode or right click empty space on a toolbar and use "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press F11.<br /> -
This is a persistent repeat problem. I had this problem a week ago. A Linux savvy friend could not solve it, so we deleted and removed FF. That was a drastic solution, but solved the problem.
I had Ad Block and No Script add ons. I thought No Script might be the problem. Problem remained after disabling NS. I later even removed No Script but that still did not solve the problem.
Running FF in safe mode from terminal does not stop problem. If I try to right click at all, anywhere on page FF slows to a glacial crawl. It also requires that I force quit. This is a persistent repeat problem. I had this problem a week ago. A Linux savvy friend could not solve it, so we deleted and removed FF. Firefox will not stay open long enough to clear cache or history or any other diagnostic checks. Open in safe mode makes no difference. BitGuard.dll is not installed or running and I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox with no change. Thanks

Mid 2009 Crashing but fine in Safe Mode
Hello friendly support community,
Having a little issue again with my mid 2009 Macbook Pro 2.53GHz intel core 2 duo system. Upgraded the system from 4gb to 8 gb about a month ago and everything has seemingly been running fine until today.
- Shut down my system last night.
- Went to power on this evening about an hr ago and I was stuck on the white Apple logo loading screen.-
- Reset PRAM (reset 3 times in a row) and SMC ---- still stuck
- Boot into safe mode--- worked then immediately restarted (via instructions from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570)
- Boot normaly (no longer stuck on white loading screen!)----- then immediate CRASH!!!
- Back in safe mode now (which is working fine) to submit this Help Discussion
Here is the panic report. Any ideas. I know that yesterday I updated the Evernote app from the Apple App Store and updated the definitions in the VirusBarrier App (also downloaded from the app store a while ago). Nothing more changed. Would really appreciate the help!

Hi,
I am frequently having troubles with my MB. Different types of troubles. Couldn't solve a single one yet.
I have performed reboot MB in safe mode-- hold down the left shift key after the start up tone till the spinning gear appeared.
Few hours back i performed that, and since then it just starting up in safe mode without holding the any shift key. I have password protected log-in and each time the dialog box shown the safe mode, not the normal boot as it used to be. I restarted so many times, but same result.
I started-up by holding down the Option key, dialog box showing the same thing "safe mode" and same result.
I started-up in single user mode, and then typed reboot, then pressed enter/return button, but dialog box shown the same and it started up in safe mode after entering the password.
While in the safe mode, i have selected the Mac OS X 10.4.11 from the preference pane, then restarted, but all produced the same result, same dialog box showing the safe mode.
I couldn't take the screen shot of that dialog box that appears before starting up.
I am currently using the internet while in safe mode, and using ethernet adapter- a AirStream 1100 F25 external modem attached to the USB port. I don't know if that is good for my MB to use internet on the safe mode.
I used disk utility and verified the disk during the safe mode, i don't know if that is right or wrong to perform that utility in safe mode, but it all appeared as normal. You can see that from the following image.
Few days back, i performed the disk utility to verify disk while on the normal boot. But the result shown the red marks, please see the following image for details.

Please help me out. Let me know how to start-up normally. By the way, my superdrive is not detecting DVDs including the OS dvds, but it read and write the CDs. So, It is not possible to reinstall OS early, at least not before the having the back up of the data. Please help me with contingency plan/s or as you think fit.
Thank you. Look forward to your reply.
<Personal Information Edited by Host>Maximillianmann,
depending upon how full “almost full” actually is, that could be the problem.
You can try this, if you have Mac OS X 10.7 or newer installed, to see if it’s not related to your disk being almost full: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Once you hear the startup chime, try booting into Safe mode; does it let you do so now? -
Need help with Late 2009 imac- had HD and video card replaced under Apple Care last year. Upgraded to Mavericks and it froze up while on Yahoo looking at a slide show. Screen pixelated with checkerboard patterns and then eventually locks-up. Only way to get it to work now is in SAFE MODE.
Tried memory test, Resetting SMC, AHT, Zapping NVRAM, PRAM, only errors I can see are some permissions
From Repair Permissions (Disk utility):

New kernel panic is now as follows-
What's interesting is I had the video card replaced at Apple in the last year- it's a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
But I see that the log has it listed as
"com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(8.2.4)"
wondering if that my be the problem as the issue is the screen is fragmented and flickers- checkerboard before it crashes when not in safe mode..

Time Machine Kernel Panics, but not in safe mode - what should I look for
Hi,
Time machine Crashes (Kernel panic) when Run normally.
When I boot in Safe mode, it runs fine.
Is there a list of programs known to cause issues with Time Machine?
If not where should I look?
I assume my ID's "Login Items" - but is there anywhere else to look?
Here's a list of what I have on my machine that I suspect gets bypassed with safemode:
VMWare Fusion Helper
Dropbox
Clusters Helper
GrowlHelperApp
gfxCardStatus
Cinch
Sizeup
whichdaemon
Xmarks for Safari
LMILaunchAgentFixer
itunesHelper
ThingsHelper
In addition to the above 'Login Items' I also have Mozy home backup installed, Logmein, and istat menus.Well as luck would have it, we can rule out istat menu as well...
After uninstalling istat menus,
It crashed around the 180GB mark.
here is the latest crash dump:

After booting in safe mode with "directory recovery" (or something like that). This is one above "with network." It stops at a blue screen with only "ease of access in LL corner, and "shutdown" in LR corner. These work, but don't do anything useful. This is not BSOD. My best theory is that it's doing something that takes a long time and I should just leave it alone, but it's been a few hours. I've tried pulling the power cord, but restarting still the same thing. If the PC came with a boot CD for rescue or restore of backup image, nobody can find it. There's no CD-writer here either. If I can order a rescue boot CD by mail, I'd like to do that. This has Windows 8, recently updated to 8.1
**next day Situation the same. I think I should try to restore the backup system image. I tried hitting F2 during reboot and got a diagnostics screen. I was hoping for a screen to boot from the backup image partition. I got the following info from the system information in the diagnostic.
Model: 23-B012
Serial: 3cr30806p9
Bios: 8.09
Any suggestions on how to proceed from here welcome.
Thanks for reply. Now Tuesday morning. As it happens, I was led through a system recovery by HP on the phone. The magic key is F11 during boot. The recovery went OK, but at the end system was still in safe mode and would not allow me to proceed. HP said I needed a recovery CD. One came with the product, but had been lost or thrown away by the owner. As I write, I'm waiting for a replacement CD to arrive by mail. Should arrive today.
This question was solved.

Having a problem with a MacBook Air not booting (greyscreen, Apple logo, spinning wheel). Tried to boot in safe mode. Status bar appeared then reverted to same greyscreen. Gave up after 15 minutes. Now trying Safe Boot with status console. Getting the same message over and over:
CODE SIGNING: csinvalidpage (0x10001d000): p=112(and counting)[configd] clearing CS_VALID
Any idea what's going on? Suggestions for resolution?
FYI currently only have another MacBook Air in the house. Plus a new Time Machine (annoyingly not yet configured for back-up).Do the Airs have firewire ports? If so, you can connect the two with a firewire cable and boot the bad one into target disk mode (hold down T key while starting). The hard drive from that computer will then show up on the good one as an external drive. If the drive is not totally hosed, you could then recover the files you need.
I don't remember ever seeing anything like that happening during boot sequence, so I wonder if it is a hardware problem. You can boot into the hardware diagnostics by holding down the D key on startup. -
Status = Safe Mode (Software Error)
Hi
I have a FP-2015 controller with 9 different I/O modules connected to it. A very large application (clouded VIs)was written by a previous colleague. When I run this application on a computer that is connected to the FP-2015 controller, everything seems to work fine. Then, I embedded the application in the controller and launch it at every start-up. The FP controller will run for some time (not fixed, can be an hour or 2 days) and then stops. When I look at the controller's status in MAX, it is at "Safe Mode (Software Error)". I think there's an coding error, but it's really tedious to go through all the code. I found out that MAX has a function called "View Log Error" and I have attached this file. Does it tell where the error occurs?
I read that file, and apparently it's something about VISA -serial. The FP-2015 serial port is interfaced with a weather station (simply downloading data from it).
ThanksHi TaanTao,
If a FP-20xx controller crashes twice in a row (without rebooting in between), it will boot up the next time in safe mode with the status LED flashing to indicate the error type. This will prevent the startup executable from restarting unless the power on the system is cycled. Do you notice the LED flashing? If so, how many times?
It would be a lot easier to identify and troubleshoot the error if you can find the error number. Is the controller constantly communicating with the weather station? Do you notice if the crash occurs after a particular event occurs? If your code is very complicated, it may be a good idea to add "checkpoints" into your code which would either write to a marker file or to the front panel so you can get a better idea of when and where the error is encountered. Also, try placing an Error Handler (Time and Dialog subpalette) into your code so the error will pop up in a dialog box and possibly be easier to identify.
The following KB describes a similar situation to what you're encountering. Does the error code seem familiar?
Why Do I Get the Error 32810 When I Run the FieldPoint VIs Embedded on the FP-20xx?
Thanks,
Lesley
