Safe sleep or hibernation won't work on my Macbook 13" Unibody (late 2008)

I have a 13" unibody Macbook which I bought in October 2008. The systems sleeps well once the lid is closed but if it runs out of battery it will not hibernate. I checked the output of pmset and everything is properly set for mode 3, which is the "safe sleep". I even tried setting it to hibernate only and it still goes to sleep.
I found several people with similar problems, but nobody seems to have solved the problem. I can't believe that such a simple thing as setting your system to hibernate can be so complicated to achieve with OS X.
My pmset output is below. The sleepfile is dated back to June 20 when I removed the file and it got automatically recreated during reboot, but no updates to the file since then. I don't have PGP installed (I did but I removed) and I have the system (including firmware) all updated to the latest versions.

Thanks,

I have found a solution to my Mac shutting down completely without using hibernation or safe sleep. It turns out about a year ago I ran SmartSleep. A piece of software to allow you to put the mac to sleep the old way. Turns out it corrupts the Powermanagment.plist file when uninstalled. It needs to be deleted to reset to system defaults. More info here:

Whether this will stop my mac shutting down straight away anyway I have yet to find out, but at least the contents of the comp are saved first now.

  • External dvd drive won't work on USB macBook air

External dvd drive won't work on my macBook air usb port.  It works on older versions of air and iMac.
Any ideas.  Tried the left shift, control, option and power button sumultaniously, but did not work.

I know that no one has replied yet, but figured out the issue.  I called Applecare and they couldn't figure it out, so sent me to a genuis at the Apple store.  They too couldn't figure it out and told me that it was a firmware issue with the Toshiba dvd external drive.  When I got home, I thought I would try one more thing.  I hooked it up to a powered hub and it works perfectly.  I'm not sure why no one else thought of it, but glad that I did.

  • CanoScan 9000F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though it should be compatible with the Mac 10.7.2 OS.

My new CanoScan 900F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though I've followed all instructions to make it compatible with the 10.7.2 OS. The USB connection isn't recognised. What else con I do?

I have a similar problem with a new CanoScan 9000F which I tried to use without any success on my desktop computer (Mac Pro 5,1) and laptop (Macbook Pro 1,2) both running OS 10.6. Problem is identical on both, viz:
        •    Scanning process appears to start, a message comes on the screen: Scanning do not open document cover followed by Scanning...
        •    This is then replaced by the message: Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed. 2.155.33
I've spent several hours on the phone with Canon support but having uninstalled/installed/reinstalled/updated/turned on/turned off/unplugged/plugged/restarted innumerable times, the problem is exactly the same. The scanner icon shows up in the Printer & Fax System Prefs (though without the little status lights) and shows as being connected in the USB tree. I think it's a problem with the scanner, Canon bods are suggesting the Macs are at fault and suggest I try connecting to a wintel (hawk, spit) and it's 100km to the nearest Canon service centre.
Any suggestions as to what might be the problem/s and what I might be able to do to fix it/them?
    Thanks.
By the way, bought the Canon to replace a HP Scanjet 8300 which I've used for 6 years almost without problems. Any that I have had have been fixed merely by turning the scanner off then on after a 10 second rest.

  • Bootcamp 3.1 Macbook Pro 15 Unibody Late 2008 fans working now?

I just upgraded bootcamp to 3.1 on my macbook pro 15 unibody late 2008. I ran Windows Experience Index under win7 Pro 64bit and the fans were humming loud and clear during the test which is a good sign. It runs about the same as when using 9600 in Leopard (very warm). Two finger right click is still a little sketchy, but at least I won't be using my macbook as a frying pan any time soon.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.

  • External back up won't work on Yosemite Macbook Pro

I downloaded OS X Yosemite a couple of days ago, works well. I went to back up my Macbook Pro on the external hard drive I have always used and it won't work, it just keeps saying preparing back up. It is a WD My Passport hard drive. I tried removing the hard drive and selecting it to use a a back up but still wouldn't work. It has worked fine every time before downloading Yosemite. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • My webcam won't work on my macbook!

I rarely ever use it, but when I do it won't work at all. It's never worked in Ichat and now it won't work in a chatroom.
I've had this problem ever since I got it. I never cared because It was never used but it's been bugging me.
    Can someone help?
When I see the green light, I think it's working...it ends up not being the case. What's going on?

Then how do I make my isight camera work? I just restored my computer from the apple store, they gave me a new hardrive and everything, and when I turned on my macbook, I updated it and I tried to open photobooth, it said that the camera was being used by another application or there was no camera plugged in. The green light that was supposed to be on when its in use wasn't on (and right now it isn't on either) and so i know there is some problem. Is there a setting I have to turn on? Because I've gone through system preferences and I can't find one. Thanks.

  • The Sims 3 won't work on my Macbook Pro

I just recently got a Macbook Pro that came with Lion installed already. When I tried to put Sims 3 into it, the computer didn't read the disk. Is there anything I can do to get Sims to work on my computer? Thanks

Is it a Mac disk?  If not, it won't work unless you create a Windows partition, and install Windows through Boot Camp or an emulator like Parallels.
