Safe to leave USB plugged in but unconnected to iPod?

Is it safe to leave the USB cord plugged in to a computer or other USB receptacle when the iPod is not attached to the connector end of the cord? Will the plastic cap for the connector end protect it.
Specifically, I have a new car that has a USB port in the storage console, and it works great for viewing iPod playlists, etc on my car's navigator screen. I would like to leave the USB cord plugged into the car's USB port on a permanent basis, but take the iPod into the house when it's too hot or cold. Would this be Ok?

Hello Ron,
I don't see anything problem with that. I have a similar set up in my vehicle and have always left in there no matter the time of year or temperature, but either way it's still a risk you have to be willing to take. If you wanted, you could always just pull the cord and put it in your glove box if you were feeling a bit unsure.

  • [SOLVED] Leave headphones plugged in, switch output in software

Normally, when I plug in my headphones sound stops playing from speakers. I would prefer leaving them plugged in, but being able to switch between speakers and headphones using some software switch.
In pavucontrol, I do have separate Line Out and Headphones ports, but when headphones are plugged in they both control headphone output. Is this possible to do?

    options snd_usb_audio index=-2

  • Better to leave computer plugged in or unplugged when sleeping?

I'm wondering if it is better for the battery (i.e. will preserve the battery's life) to leave it plugged in (fully charged) or to unplug it and let it drain a little overnight. I've actually heard both. I know it makes sense just to leave it plugged in, but I've heard that it's bad for the battery to just leave it plugged in all the time, for some reason.
    Just curious.

    Welcome to the Forums!
It's bad for the battery for the MBP to be run on AC power all the time. Li-based batteries need to be used to maintain health. Optimal use is 1-2 charge cycles per week.
It does not hurt to leave the MBP plugged in when the battery is charged - there is no risk of overcharging; in fact, your MBP will not initiate charging if the current charge is 95% or higher (this prevents overcharging and very small, frequent charges/discharges).

  • Safe To Leave It Charging All Day?

When you're not using a MacBook, say, for a few days, is it safe to leave it plugged in and charging? Is it possible to harm the MacBook by overcharging it?

    hi there!
what happends when you charge the computer for a long time and its already at a near full charge, is that the computer and adapter go into a trickle charge mode. after the battery is charged to about 80%, the adapter doesn't do a full-blown charge, rather a slower, less power consuming charge. if the battery is full, it will still draw electricity to keep the battery at 100& constantly, not letting the battery charge ever drop below 100%.
also, if its worth mentioning, leaving the computer charged for days at a time can cause the battery to 'get used' to having a constant charge and eventually, it won't be able to hold a full charge because it won't know how!
    hope that helps!

  • "charging not supported by this accessory".  If I leave it plugged in, it charges, but I noticed that the charge doesn't seem to hold as long.  What does this mean?

Why every time I plug my phone in using a USB cord or charger does it say "charging not supported with this accessory"?  The phone will charge if I leave it plugged in long enough, but I noticed that it doesn't hold the charge like it used to.  Is this the battery, or something else?

    Hi CJ-
There are some chargers designed for thr original iPhone that are not compatible with the 3G and later models. Are you using the USB cable that came with the 3G?  That cable, when plugged into a computer USB port, or, when plugged into the power cube / wall outlet, should charge the 3G just fine.
Due to the nature of Lithium Ion batteries, there are safeguards in place to prevent the wrong type of charger from supllying charge voltage to the batteries, and if the proper pins and resistance is not detected by the phone,  the circuitry will block charging and give that message.
Therefore:  If you are using a 3G compatible (oem, or otherwise valid charger), and you're seeing that "not supported" message, it could be the cable you're using, or it's the phone/circuitry detection in the phone that detects the cable / charger type.
And, if you are getting some charge, but it's not holding very long, it could be that it's a 3G, and the lifespan of the battery is near end of life.   The fact that you're getting a charging not supported message is probably of more importance as to why the battery is not fully being charged.

  • If my computer is not fully charged but i'm shutting it down for the night, is it better to leave it plugged in or to unplug it?

If my computer is not fully charged but i'm shutting it down for the night, is it better to leave it plugged in or to unplug it?

Your computer will not overcharge, even when off. If the battery is sufficiently low, it will top off the battery and stop charging. By morning, the light will be green because it is done charging.
There is no need to disconnect the power when you shut it off. The SMC microcontroller will continue to supervise charging the battery, even when the main processor is shut down.

  • Safe to leave phone (turned off) in multimedia dock for several days?

If my Droid X is turned off and I do not need to use it (literally do not need to turn it on) for several days, is it okay to leave it in the multimedia desktop dock (or whatever it is called)?
Similarly, is it okay to leave it plugged in to the wall charger?
I believe that some of these devices, if not the phone itself, are designed to slow down the charge as the battery comes closer to full charge, and then to turn off charging until the battery charge goes down (either do to use or lack of use over time), in which case it starts charging again, but only a little if it is near a full charge. I doubt that charging through the USB cable has this effect (unless it is built into the phone or the motodrivers that the phone autoinstalls on the computer the first time you connect it with a USB cable for any reason).
So are any or all of these 3 things safe to leave connected when my Droid X is turned off for several days on a full charge: 1) multimedia desk dock, 2) wall charger, and/or 3) USB cable?

Yes, once you'r phone reaches 100% charge it will stop charging.  The problem is that if it is turned off, it will not automatically start charging again, it will need to either be turned on, or unplugged and plugged back in.  However, since you have a new battery, a phone turned off will not drain your battery much even over an extended period of time such as a week.

  • Leaving charger plugged in-good or bad idea?

While the MagSafe connector is really nice, it leads me to ask whether it's wise (or safe) to leave the charger plugged in continuously, as it does get warm. I've looked but cannot find any information on power draw when charger is connected vs unconnected to the MacBook.
Does anyone know the recommendation for leaving plugged or unplugging a charger by a knowledgable source who knows how these devices are engineered?
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB Apple RAM

    I now have further information.
After charging, the power adapter is warm to hot.
After running with power connected, the power adapter is warm to hot.
After disconnecting the MagSafe connector (and letting time pass), the power adapter(while still plugged into the wall) is cool to the touch.
I am therefore concluding that there is some active circuitry in the power adapter that senses (or responds to) the MagSafe connector being engaged, and that reduces the power draw and heat deterioration of the power adapter.
As always, an answer from an authoritative source would be nice.

  • Is it safe to leave your iPhone being charged overnight?

I usually leave my phone plugged into the wall overnight. Normally, this is a period that span from 6-10 hrs. Is this safe for my iPhone? Will this shorten battery life?

Hey PT i was following a thread last night about the
    "glowing Battery"
You said you would see if you could get yours to do
    it.
I charged mine all night and still have a liver of
uncharged battery - no glow. Also no plug symbol -
    just the lightening bolt.
Did you have any luck with this??
PS - sorry to drift from topic all!
I got my full battery and the plug symbol, but I still can't see a "glow". Must be blind.
I have read some people having better luck with getting full charges when connecting to a USB port on a computer (as long as the computer doesnt go into sleep mode). You should use up the battery a bit (10-20%), then do a reset and try the recharge again. Getting the plug symbol I think is more important than this glow I keep reading about. (as well as reset the "Usage since last full charge" timer under Settings / Usage)

You're probably referring to PowerBooks equipped with the faulty Lithium-ion batteries from Sony ? I haven't been around lately but I've never heard of Macbook Pros catching fire. The MBPs use Lithium polymer batteries that don't contain the flammable organic solvents found in Lithium-ion batteries.

  • Iphone Stuck on USB Plug-- Itunes icon. Help!

I need help. My Iphone is stuck on the USB Plug-->Itunes icon, i can turn it off, but when i turn it back on it shows the apple logo, and then goes straight to the plug in to iTunes icon. This happened after i set to install the newest updated software for my iPhone, i left my computer for a few hours, figuring iTunes would automatically download and install it properly, and i come back and its stuck at the above^^.
I tried DFU mode and it doesn't seem to do anything, and i have the latest version of iTunes.
    Any help appreciated!

    Hi,
Please note: DFU mode is different than recovery mode. DFU is an even deep-level boot mode, no OS or any visual thing is loaded, so your device's screen will be black. It's not easy to guess whether it is in DFU mode or is it turned off. But don't worry. Just follow the steps I provided below and iTunes would do the rest
    To enter DFU mode:
    1) Connect your iPhone to your computer.
    2) Turn iPhone off.
    3) Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
    4) Release power but keep holding home until iTunes detect your iPhone
    5) Once iTunes detected your phone, it will display the following alert:
"iTunes has detected a phone in recovery or DFU mode and it needs to be restored."
    6) Now, just click OK and restore your phone.
PS. I'm not sure why did your phone get into Recovery Mode (the "Connect to iTunes" warning) but DFU should help.
PSS. don't leave your phone alone while you are upgrading the firmware. Just to make sure everyting is all right
