Safe To Repair Disk Permissions?

Is it safe to Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility in Snow Leopard? I could've sworn I read somewhere that you shouldn't do it. Maybe I imagined it.

You are probably thinking of fsck.
If you use that you can get some false error messages as explained here:
Tip: If you use a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) formatted volume, such as with Mac OS X 10.3 or later, you probably won't need to use fsck. If you do use it for any reason, please be aware that benign error messages can appear.
If you're not sure how your volume is formatted and you can't start up from your Mac OS X volume to find out, type the following command in a command-line interface and then press Return: diskutil info /
If you see "File System: Journaled HFS+" returned, you have a Journaled volume.

Permissions verification complete
It seems to me that these are all related to system files, things that weren't changed by third-party applications or by me.
The question are:
- why an untouched system would have errors in the permissions ?
- is it safe, since I haven't got until now problems with permissions on that os, to repair these errors or it's better to leave everything as it is now ?
Ciao,
Nicola

Hello Nicola,
You raise a touchy area for discussion...some users on here are very opposed to repairing permissions, others are strongly in favor of repairing permissions before and after software installation.
The permission statements you see do not generally adversely affect the system but they are not the permissions disk utility has been told to expect. Those may be artifacts from the installation process and why we have been told in the past to always repair permissions after installing/updating the operating system.
Since you ran verification, if you run repair you will end up cleaning up a lot of this "discrepancies" with what disk utility wants to see.
Repair permissions is safe, and I tend to use it every time I upgrade or install software.
Ralph

• Safe to verify and repair disk permissions with SSD?

Its just strange, as soon as I repair all my permissions, if I verify them again straight away, there are some that already need re-repairing

• Constantly having to repair disk permissions after hanging system

From the time I purchased this I've had ongoing issues with the java, flash, OS updates causing the computer to hang forever. Sometimes I end up having to press the off button because Command Q and Command/Option/Escape won't allow a force quit even after a 20 minute wait. I don't know enough about what's going on behind the boot up to know what's wrong. Here is a copy of my console log and this is exactly what they look like each time after I have gone in and done a disk verify, (says it's okay) and then repair disk permissions. I've had to boot to safe mode 3 times today and repair permissions due to this issue. There is nothing plugged into the computer except the power cord. The OS is up to date per Software Update and the only 3rd party software installed is SKYPE ...

Which MacBook model? Did it come with OSX 10.6 or did you upgrade it?

• Need advice on Repairing Disk Permissions...

I need some input from those who know how to Repair Disk Permissions (under Disk Utility, for those who don't know).
Basically, I lost a TON of my Access and Privileges on my G4 recently--which I really only noticed after iTunes would no longer let me import anything (no matter how many times I tried changing the Ownership & Permissions on my Music folder's Info section)--which, I might add, I suffered due to a virus caused by Limewire. As had been suggested to me, I Verified Disk Permissions, and saw that I had a TON of problems listed on my startup HD. So I'm now seeking ways to repair them.
Now, the most obvious way is using the Repair Disk Permissions program (which I've actually never had to use before). However, under OS10.3.9, when I select the Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility, in listing all my Drives available, it actually shows the drive in 2 formats/pictures:
1) the actual technical name/manufactor model/GB size of the drive (on top), and
2) the Desktop name and Icon picture of the Drive as it appears on my desktop.
This confuses me: as you can guess, the startup Drive in question is only partioned as one. So on Disk Utility, which of these 2 pictured drives do I have to highlight and Repair Disk Permissions to (i.e. 19GB Maxtor32049 Vs. 'HAL')?
Also, for those of you who have used other means (programs) to change Disk Permissions, which would you recommend? For example, I got a program from Versiontracker called BatCHmod, but I don't know if something like it is any safer than just using Repair Disk Permissions. Because unfortunately, I'm running out of room on my disk, and don't have nearly enough space on my other drive to hope to back the whole Drive up to.
Please help!!!

Hi phasmatrope!
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk HAL, in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
"We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
New permissions are 33261"
This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
Or these:
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
There may be others that you can ignore. Complete lists at link below.

When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

• Rationale for Repairing Disk Permissions

I repair permissions before and after installations, and I suggest others to do so. However, I have read in some threads in Discussions there there is no technical basis for repairing disk permissions before installation, and that only repairing after installation is necessary.
I realize that there are different opinions about this, but beyond opinions is there a technical basis or rationale for repairing disk permissions before installations?
Thanks.

Hi cornelius,
Here is some reading about this topic. Mind that Apple DOES recommend repairing permissions as routine maintenance (see links at the bottom)! My suggestion to Repair permissions before and after an update has a very simple rational: If you forgot to repair permissions AFTER the last update you might get into trouble. Therefore it is safe and costs only a few seconds to do it before and after the update.
mac.column.ted: Unravelling the Repair Disk Permissions controversy
"Ted Landau
May 2006
Repairing Disk Permissions. Not exactly a topic that you would expect to spark much controversy. Yet, surprisingly, it is the focal point of a rather heated debate.
The command itself is innocuous enough. It is included as part of the First Aid component of Disk Utility. Apple's Help for Disk Utility states: "User permissions associated with files, folders, or applications can become damaged and prevent a file or application from opening. Permissions problems can also cause your computer to run slowly. Using Disk Utility, you may be able to fix these permissions problems...Repairing permissions may also be recommended after updating the system or installing new software."
Consistent with this, many users and Web sites (including MacFixIt and at least some postings on MacinTouch) recommend the use of Repair Disk Permissions, not only for specific signs of trouble, but as a part of generic troubleshooting and ongoing maintenance for your Mac.
In contrast, other members of the Mac community (writing in locations such as the Daring Fireball , Unsanity, and the MDJ) argue that running this command just for maintenance, in the absence of any particular symptom, is essentially worthless. Some critics go even further and claim there is no justification for ever selecting to repair permissions. Not only is it useless, they contend, but it may even cause new problems to appear. This viewpoint is often expressed with inflammatory rhetoric such as "covering yourself in Vaseline and rolling around naked in the dirt and repairing permissions are just as likely to fix your Mac OS X problem" (Unsanity).
Regardless of who's right or wrong, I don't believe that insulting users is merited here, especially when these users are simply following advice suggested by Apple itself. As it turns out, I also do not agree with the position of these critics. So, although I may be stepping into a minefield, here's my own take on this subject and my resulting recommendations. [Disclaimer: I was not involved in the authorship of previous MacFixIt articles on this subject. This column is my separate opinion, and does not necessarily reflect the views of MacFixIt.]: Continued"

• Cannot, View or Repair Disk Permissions with disk utility,

Hey,
I can't repair disk permissions using Disk Utility.
I can only repair them using the boot disk and I'm just worried that something somewhere is corrupted or gone irky (Technical computer term).
Thanks.

Installed Lion on my 27" iMac (mid 2010) and everyday since it shuts down after start up.
Called Apple they said repair permissions, after safe boot. Thats works but only for the next restart.
When I shutdown and start up the next day I have to go thru the same process.
Anybody else have this problem?

• Archive, Repair Disk Permissions, etc. problems

I have problems trying to archive files/folders. I get an error message: "The archive's list of contents cannot be created." I tried repairing disk permissions and it would still have that error message.
Later, I decided to try to use Onyx, however, I couldn't access it and suggested to repair disk permissions and restart Onyx. I did that it still have that message. I later tried in another account, then in Safe Boot in my primary account and nothing changed. I can't even uninstall Onyx unless I repair disk permissions.
I seemed to have problems syncing my iPod Touch 2g with iTunes saying that it couldn't sync because there was another sync client. I'm not sure if this is also related.
It seems like that there is a system wide problem.

I did stumble over that same thread and attempted to follow it. Something didn't work. I wasn't sure where '/tmp' was and using Terminal to perform the operations somehow didn't solve it. After revisiting the thread you posted, I figured out what was tmp which was located on the Macintosh HD -there was /tmp. Then I followed the steps and voilà, the archive did work. Along with Onyx and everything else.
thanks!

• All external Drives stopped mounting after repair disk permissions

My 2.3 GhzPPC G5 10.4.11 was running a bit slow so I ran repair disk permissions and now none of my external drives will mount, can't see them in disk utility either.
Drives work fine on my macbook pro.
I've searched for help but no luck..
Thanks for any advice...

Neil, you really should repair the disk before repairing permissions.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Can anyone explain why I have to check & repair disk permissions every time I have to restart my MacBook Pro. When I do the check I get various messages eg 'Library should be '0', is '80'. And other variations for Library.

I'd do one/more of a few things.
First, (and not only good for this exercise), I'd back up to a Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner clone - on an external disc, and/or use Time Machine.
Next step, boot in Safe mode and see how things are.
Next, create another account with similar permissions to the one you are using now. If the problem persists in this account also it is system wide.
Next boot from the clone you made and see what gives..........

• Repair Disk Permissions with Lion

Installed Lion two days ago and thought I would "Verify/Repair Disk Permissions" for the first time with Lion. But I'm getting the warning message:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
I tried "Repair" twice and got the exact same message both times. I'm not sure if this is serious or not, and can't say for certain if it wouldn't have happened a week ago or few weeks ago (it's been nearly two months since last "Verfiy/Repair"). Any lessons, tips, instructions will be appreciated.

• Repair Disk Permissions disconnect

My G5 is used as a stand-alone video editing system. Whenever I attempt to Repair Disk Permissions on my MAC drive (whether in Normal or Safe mode) I get about a third way into the program and then get an alert message telling me that the disk utility has lost its connection with the Disk Manager. Disk Warrior software does not resolve this problem. Is this a hardware or software problem? What should be my next step? Please advise.

There is a fix for something similar at the link here

• Anyone clean their mac using the disk utility using the repair disk permissions??

anyone clean their mac using the disk utility using the repair disk permissions??

No. Threads don't hurt anything. If your computer is not functioning properly perhaps you need to try some basic maintenance. Let's start by having you do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, try booting into Safe Mode then immediately restart normally. Safe mode is going to take a while so be patient. It's slow.
Next, create a new user account. Log out of your account then log into the new account. Try using iPhoto and the publishing button. Do they work now?
If you still have a problem, then do the following. If you don't want to go through the above then just start with the following and forget the others above.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
