Safe To Replace Original HDrive with Cloned Backup? OS X 4.11

I recently encountered problems with loads of my Preferences settings going missing (posted a thread here

But a thought occurred to me: I have a perfect CCCloned Backup Drive of my original HD that I did 6 weeks back.
Can I use this to overwrite the existing Hard Drive - i.e. make the Clone the internal drive?
I'd imagine first I'll need to bootup from the Cloned disk. Then, I could choose the internal HD as the destination.
If so, I guess I will I need to format the original HD and what pitfalls should I watch out for? Am I going to do more harm than good?
Note: I thought of simply finding my old .plist preference files on the Cloned drive and replacing the original, so as to get the system back to the way it was before preference-wise - but oddly the .plists for mac/mail.plist etc weren't on the Cloned drive. For a layman like me that seems strange.

You can hold the option/alt key down on a wired or built in keyboard and boot from the clone drive, grab the latest copies of your files and reverse clone your troubles away (currently doing that right now and typing here too. )
All your software and OS X will have to be updated of course.
You can find the
com.apple.mail.plist
file in the User/Library (hidden in 10.7 and up)
However since it's just a preferences file for Mail, you can delete it and reboot the machine and launch Mail, a new preferences file is automatically created with no preferences of course.

If you do plan on reverse cloning, do take the extra step first to use Disk Uilitiy to Zero Erase the Macinstosh HD partition (if on 10.7 or above) or the entire drive (10.6 no BootCamp) as to catch any potential failing sectors.
10.7+ you need to move the slider one space to the right, do not do anymore as it's not necessary and takes a really long time.
10.6 you use Security Option > Zero and then click erase.

Actually iPhoto is following the digital asset management best practice philosophy of always keeping a digital negative untouched and intact. iPhoto is an entry level DAM application for the general public. To do what you want you might look into the more advanced DAM applications that will let you do what you want. You can learn about them at The DAM Forum for professional photographers.
I use Media Expression which I think is one of the best as my primary DAM and iPhoto for special projects. But alas it doesn't not have Faces and Places. It does read geo-tagged image files but you'll have to assign "Location" identity to them by editing the IPTC metadata fields with EM.
One method to avoid having the portrait photos modified by iPhoto it to upload the photos to a folder on the Desktop before importing. There you can losslessly rotate those files that need it. It also gives you an opportunity to rename the files to something more informative that IMG_001.jpg.

How can i replace original media with newly transcoded optimised media in the timeline?

I have transcoded new optimised media (Prores 422) after importing and partly editing some original Canon H.264 material. I now want to replace the original H.264 edit with the matching new pro res 422 clips so I can playback more smoothly on a MBPro. I can't find a menu command in FCP X to allow me to do this other than during the initial import process. But it does allow you to create transcoded material after the initial import; how do you link/replace to it?

Welcome to one great feature of FCP X: what you are asking for is not needed. It is done for you automatically.
When you have selected "original or optimized media" selected in your preferences, FCP X will use optimized media if available, or original media if you haven't transcoded. So really there is no step 3 :-)

How Do I Restore A Replacement iPod Touch With the Backup From A Previous iPod Touch?

I recently received a replacement iPod Touch because of hardware issues with my previous one. I managed to back up my last iPod Touch with iCloud, I also recall using iCloud to restore it from backup after I first updated to iOS 5. All I'm looking to do is to restore everything exactly as it was (app data etc) on my last iPod before I had it replaced. Yet, when I attempt to restore it from back up, it restores with the wrong back up.

Ripped music in library disappeared when I replaced original Nano with new iTouch

I had an original 2Gb Nano that Apple replaced with a new 8 Gb iTouch a few months ago. When I synced the new iTouch with iTunes, all of the ripped music I had in the library that was also on the original Nano disappeared from the library. How do I find this music on my computer (same one I was using with the original Nano) and get it into the iTunes library once again? Thanks for any assistance!

Ok, it magically came back. :? I really don't know what happened, but I'll leave this topic open for a day in case anyone eles is having a similar situation and someone would be kind enough to come in here and explain either that a) I'm more technologically impaired than the majority of the population under the age of 10 or b) this is a common thing and this is what happened. . .so I don't get ticked off the next time it happens.

Applescript for replacing Original Files with aliases from an Organized Library.

Hi, all I am new to Applescript and the support community. I am working on developing a script that takes a folder and replaces its original music content with aliases from an organized Library. Let me explain a little better.. I have a list of project folders that all contain folders and original music. My company uses iTunes to store and organize their music. Once iTunes has imported the music and has made a copy of the original file and organizes it accordingly we create an alias within the iTunes Library and manually drag and drop the aliases into our Project folders. I have a Script that reverts the aliases with the orginal file and the coding is

Basically I need the revers of this process. The objective is to save space and continue to let iTunes organize and copy files for us. I already have made a script that generates aliases into the subfolders of iTunes organized Library withour replacing the file that iTunes created. I also made a script that takes the itunes library and dumps all the aliases into a designated folder. I thought this may be helpful for drawing aliases to files that are in our project folder but seem to be stuck.
I was thinking maybe if I took my iTunes and made all the aliases all into one folder to draw aliases from would make it easier. I'm not sure but it seems like there should be some easy way of doing this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On a long web page with many small pics Firefox (4.0.1 on Linux Mint 11) doesn't load them all at once, and MAFF replaces original pics with blank lazy.png

Similar problem trying to save web page with ScreenGrab! (many small pics on the web page are blank). Maybe there is a way to fine tune Firefox?

Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

There's an "updated.app" laying in Firefox package. Since firefox won't start and "updated.app" will, is it safe to replace firefox package with it?

After last update to last version, FF was running fine before a hardware restart.
Since then it won't start and profile manager either. No error message pops up and console window doesn't trace any event.
firefox package contents an "updated" package likely created by last update.
Will i loose my settings or run into any kind of problem by replacing firefox's package with the so called "updated" one?

To Reset Firefox do the following:

Every backup replaces the old one, so, unless you included the backup folder in your computer backup routine, you can't get back your calendar info.
The only time iTunes will not replace a backup is, when you use it to restore from, this one will stay in the backup list in iTunes.

Safe to replace gcc with gcc-multilib?

It seems to me that every single useful package requires that I replace gcc-libs with gcc-libs-multilibs, binutils with binutils-multilib, and gcc with gcc-multilib, and it's frustrating. I'm trying to install pipelight in order to be able to do online schooling in Arch instead of having to switch to windows all the time, but I'm leery about replacing all these packages due to countless problems I've had with gcc-libs in the past. Is it safe to replace all these packages? Can't name any right now but there's been quite a few extremely useful packages that I won't install because it requires me to replace all these packages.
EDIT: I'm sorry, correction, this doesn't happen with pipelight specifically. It happens when I try to install a dependency; wine-silverlight. Yaourt also tells me that it's an unsupported and potentially dangerous package, although I didn't see anything signifying that in the AUR. I'm starting to believe yaourt says this about every package.

All AUR packages are unsupported, may be potentially dangerous and you should inspect the PKGBUILDs before using them to build and install packages.
If you're using a 64-bit system and have to use multilib, you do install lib32-* or *-multilib packages, nothing wrong with that. Why do you think it's unsafe?

Is synching over wi-fi viable? I've never done it, but when I tried something similar back in the old Palm PDA days, it was S-L-O-W, slow as molasses. I realize that the i-device are far more modern with faster processors, but wondering whether it's even worth exploring doing this.

Either get the entire device replaced under Out of Warranty exchange or take your chances with non-oem parts.
