Safe to upgrade to Mavericks with WD drive?

I know this is an old issue, but I have been reluctant to upgrade to Mavericks.
I ran the WD uninstaller to prepare for the Mavericks upgrade.  But I saw the WD Manager still installed in my menu bar.  I ran a separate WD manager uninstaller to get rid of it. But this left me wondering - how do I know the uninstaller did the job completely?
Is there a way I can check to be 100% certain that whatever was the offending WD software is completely removed from the external WD drive and/or my Mac before upgrading to Mavericks?
I called WD tech support, but the person I got did not give me confidence.
Thank you.

You could run a program like EtreCheck. It will show everything that is loaded.

  • Upgrading to Maverick with old hardware (July 2007)

    Hi,
I have just upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 + combo v1.1., it works fine.
I have an old hardware (July 2007), is it safe for me to buy and install Maverick...or should I stop here? thanks for advising

Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes (you will need the latest version in order to synch with mobile devices).
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • HT201364 I have most of the requirements for mavericks, however, can I still upgrade to mavericks with 1GB of ram??

I was wondering If I can upgrade to Mavericks if I have MOST of the requirements available..... The only thing I need to do is upgrade the ram. I currently have 1GB of Ram
Or MUST I upgrade the ram???????

And check the Mavericks requirements again. A MacBook that shipped with only 1 Gig of RAM is probably too old for use with Mavericks. As I believe that all of the qualifying MacBooks shipped with a minimum of 2 Gigs RAM.
The minimum requirement for the MocBook is:
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
Note: It always helps to mention your exact Mac model when posting a question in the forums.

  • Upgrading to Mavericks with problematic Aperture Lib

I have a 30K image DB (referenced), which I repair often and rebuild as needed, but errors persist.  I am now exporting major chunks as new "sublibs", but it will take months to repair.  I'm reimporting all images (at least on all the older projects) and reapplying adjustments, all very laborious, but this is the only way I have found to expose and eliminate specific problems.
I would like to upgrade to Mavericks, but if I need to have a clean lib first, as advice on this forum seems to indicate, then that would be a long way off for me.  Plus, I don't think I can ever be sure I have completely rid myself of errors.
So the questions are: is the new version of Aperture completely unable to deal with old problems?  Must I do all corrective work first?  What if there are errors when I try to upgrade?  What is my best strategy?
My lib includes projects from old iPhoto events (some imports are recent, though I no longer use iPhoto since 2010) as well as direct imports, since I started using Ap3 Beta in early 2010.  I'm finding many errors in these older parts, but a few show up more recently as well.  I have twice had to replace my external HDD due to gradual degredation, so that is the likely source of some of the problems.

The library (~100GB) is on the internal HDD, but the masters (~1TB) are on an external HDD. (I'm not sure this answers your question.)
Note: In earlier years, I used a third party utility to extract some events from the iPhoto lib, but recently I have only used the built-in functionality.
As to recurring errors, my opinion is that there are errors that cannot be detected, or else they cannot be repaired, by the repair utility.
One example is that there seem to be "covert" items. At least some of these apparently are photos that I deleted long ago, but that were not completely expelled. A clue to this are some old keywords that appear in the Keywords list, and may or may not show non-zero counts. These items cannot be found by filtering, so they cannot be tracked down.  I have found some of these items by creating a new project and moving all selected images from the old to the new project, then deleting the old project. The total item count will change and there may be things in Trash, which cannot be viewed but can be deleted. I have sometimes found errors, by accident, by changing the filter settings in a new way (this is very rare, and make no obvious sense).
Another example is that trash often shows up after I export groups of projects as new libraries, then I delete the old projects from the main lib.  And, I'm finding many of these "ghosts" in the new lib; these have no links to reference files, though they are not managed.  So far, repairing the new libs seems to be effective (fingers are crossed).
Another example is that there are many images that I haven't touched in several years, and may have Upgrade buttons on some adjustments. On some of these photos subsequent adjustment fails (expecially curves). Reimporting the photo is the only cure for these.  In many cases applying the same adjustments to the reimported photos have a different effect.

  • Support for an Upgrade and issues with Hard drive full.

I am on 10.6 Snow leopard and I need to get migrated into something later so I can take on better technology such as the ICLOUD and maybe get more productive. I am out of space on hard drive also and I have an older MAC. What can I do to keep going and maybe get upgraded and also not loose data. ? any suggestions, The Maverick upgrade says my older mac is not compatible.
    Thanks
    Steven Moore PS

I would be 'careful' and cautious with WD MyBooks anyway, but FW800 can be a great external off line backup.
What I would do is split two 1TB drives:
Drive A: OS and apps, 2nd partition for backup of Drive B which has all your media and data files.
Drive B: most all of your documents, video, music, photo, etc. which gets backed up to the 2nd half of boot drive.
Also, leave room for a backup of Drive A's OS and applications and for repairs and such like Disk Warrior.
It makes a "criss-cross." Great for dual drive setup.
I'd put your 250GB drive in FW case for backup also running Disk Warrior maintenance.

  • How to Upgrade Qosmio F50 with SSD-drive

I want to upgrade my Toshiba F-50 with an SSD-Drive 80 GB (Intel).
Can anyone recommend an SSD drive, I would like to use Intel 80 GB.
Do I need any Firmware Upgrade or Upgrade for VISTA ?
    Thanks for help

    Hi
Since Qosmio F50 support an SATA HDD controller you should use an SSD drive which supports an SATA interface
But the SSD drive is not many different from a common HDD and therefore it should not be needed to update any firmware.
Usually you would need to install just an SATA driver in order to recognize the SSD drive.

  • TS3977 Issue with extended display using Displaylink USB to DVI since upgrading to Mavericks.

I have an issue now since upgrading to Mavericks with my extended display monitor using a displaylink DVI to USB adapter. After awhile, the monitor goes blank. I can unplug the connection from the USB port and plug it back in and the display comes back, only to go out again a short time later.
It worked fine for months prior to the upgrade.
Apple say it's Dispalylink's problem and Displaylink says it's Apple's problem. Anyone else having this or a similar isssue?

Someone opened a bug report with Apple in another thread - about a different product that used DisplayLink drivers, and Apple blamed the vendor.
I have many issues too. Crashing Window Manager, and once it crashed my Mac.
I also have many issues... one is corrupt display. The icons are missing in the menubar on my laptop, and squished together on my external monitor:
They are there if I mouse over, but invisible.
I can't click on the squished ones, they are to close.

  • Messages App| connectivity issues since upgrading to Mavericks

is anyone having problems since upgrading to Mavericks with connectivity issues in the "Messages" app? Im on a 2011 MacBook Pro. I will start a desktop share session with my folks (IMAC) and within 2-3 minutes of having access to their desktop, I'm unable to control any longer and their system freezes.

    HI,
When iChat 3 came out someone tested whether it would work on the platform that was running iChat 2 and also tested whether iChat 2 would work on the later OS.
This eventually led to the Reinstall procedure for iChat 3 up to the iChat 5 version.
Since then the app has required either a Backup version from when it was working, a copy on another machine running the same OS and app version numbers (the two go hand in hand) or you have to Reinstall the whole OS which will always update you to the latest version of the OS (and in the case of Messages any updates it has had).

  • I upgraded to Mavericks and can't find a driver to work with my EPSON Perfection 4990 scanner.  The Epson site says to update thru my mac but it there is nothing there.  Any suggestions?

I upgraded to Mavericks and can't get my Epson Perfection 4990 scanner to work.  I had gotten it to work with a driver I downloaded from EPSON with Mountain Lion

    Hi...
Epson is vorking on updating drivers and utilities for this scanner.
    From the epson site :
    "Description:
An OS X 10.9 compatible Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility for this model is not yet available but is coming soon. Please check back for availability."
So, until then you can only use the basic scanning provided by Image Capture.
Alternatively take a look on vuescan.

  • 2008 MacPro upgrade to Maverick; problem with wake up.

IT runs like a well oiled machine when it runs. But, it has a problem finding the start up drive. I keep getting the flashing question mark quite frequently. I have to unplug the power cord and leave for 5 minutes EVERY time i start up.
I have initialized my HD and loaded Maverick on a blank drive; I have held down the S key for safe reboot and many other actions. But the only thing that seems to work is unplugging it.
It all started when I upgraded to Maverick. First my memory modules that came with the machine went out. I replaced them by rearranging the other ram I had installed. I don't know if there is any correlation between these events or not.
Was wondering if there is a computer command equivalent to unplugging the power cord for 5 minutes?? replacing battery??

    2008s are fussy.
Pulling the plug is asking for trouble. Resetting the SMC may not really help but should be done.
Zeroing out a new drive and cloning your system with CCC and do a checksum on copy operation.
zap pram will require going to Startup Disk in control panels, set it there.
Safe boot is  okay but Recovery mode is better, and repairing the drive in two places, top level and system volume.
But booting from another drive at least then you can do more and reformat a drive.
FBDIMMs fail, today they are cheap, better and run cooler just look on Amazon for Mac Pro FBDIMMs, you can use 667 which are usually cheaper, or 800MHz.
While at it, invest in a SSD for the system, best $139 upgrade and performance.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • Having sync issues with Outlook 2011 since upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi All,
My work Macbook Pro 13" is having issues syncing my inbox and sent mail automatically. It's a hit or miss if I recieve emails in my inbox in a timely mannor with out pressing the Send/Recive button (even when i press it takes minutes to update). My Sent Items can show up an hour later  even if I hit the Send/Recieve button.
All my mail is there and shows up/syncs on my iPhone quickly. I upgraded to Mavericks right when it came out and have only been having these sync issues for the last week or so.
I've cleared my mail cache and that didn't work. My calandar reminders and contacts don't seem to have any issues and no other apps have been preforming slow or strangely.... just my VERY important work email. My tech guys are stumped and I wanted to try you guys before they do a major rehaul of my system
    Thanks!

A new Outlook Identity will most likely solve your issues. If you have any data under "On My Computer" folders, see this link:
How to move your data to a new Identity
BTW, how much free space on your drive? Use Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities to find this info. You need a minimum of 10% free but 15-20% is recommended.
Outlook gets very sluggish when you are low on disk space. If you have a bunch of older Identities from previous rebuilds you can delete these to help free up space.
