Safe xp2100 temps??

Ok, since my new xp2500 would not oc hardly at all, I put my old xp2100 back in.
I have it oced to 2250MHz- seems stable. Loaded it with Prime95 and the cpu temp seemed to peak at 52-53c, while the MB is seemed to peak at 43c. I have my vcor set to 1.8 which is probably actually a bit higher because of the MB.  My FSB is 180x12.5. Are these temps safe? Also, if these temps seem a bit high, what kind of cooling solution would you suggest. I currently have Thermaltake XaserIII with seven case fans and I believe its a Thermaltake Volcano CPU fan. I dont want water cooling, but what about other fans or set-ups?

ok, i bumped my fsb to 195 and changed the multiplier to 12. I am running cooler now but Prime95 pukes on me in two minutes. CPU Stability 5.0 and 3dMark2001 run without a hitch. So my question is- Should I adjust my ram timings to make the sytem more stable? I think I am at 8-4-4-3 now. If so, any suggestions on where to start?

  • Safe Core Temps on an A135 S4427

Would anyone be able to tell me what a safe temperature range is for the core temp. on a Toshiba A135 S4427. I ran speedfan.exe on mine this morning and it looked like it might be running hot, so I stripped it down to to the mainboard and cleaned out the dust on the fan and also replaced the thermal paste on the CPU and the copper cooling tube. That didn't seem to help alot, but I did clean out about four years of dust.  Right now I'm running the core temp gadget and it's showing my cores running at around 136 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit with a 5 and 7 percent load on the cores. I know this unit can get hot since I run it with the lid closed and hooked up to a Toshiba Dynadock. I just want to make sure I'm not doing any damage to it.  Any help is appreciated.
    Jayme

I have the A135-S4527.  I ran the speedfan and my temps run between 164F and 212F.
I had added 1gb memory and a bigger HD thinking that was causing my heat problem.
I havent took it apart to clean fans.  I tried to use the Speedfan 4.4 to control fans,
but apparently, this model doesn't provide for fan speed control.
I do use an external USB powered fan sitting under the laptop and I try to center the fan under the laptop
vent hole.  I realize that using a USB fan also adds to load on power supply which in itself generates more heat.
Should I get a separately powered cooling fan for my laptop?
Should I be concerned with disassembling my laptop to clean it.
It is probably more than 5 years old.

  • Safe northbridge temp P45 Platinum

Hey, I picked up a P45 Platinum on clearance for AU$120 which I thought was quite the bargain. Seems much nicer than my old Asus P5K Vanilla. Have flash to latest beta bios which I think was 1.7a or something.
Quick question, what's the max safe temp for the mobo/northbridge. Running an E6850 with an OC to 3.6ghz (400mhz FSB x 9). Orthos cpu stress test has been going for a few hours so and HWmon is telling me 50 degrees. Is that okay for this board? If it's safe any info on what is considered a high mobo temp would be appreciated.

Compares to mine. I am currently folding and converting DVD to AVI files. My CPU runs at 3,8 and the usage is 98% on all 4 cores. The core temps vary between 55~60C depending on the CPU fan RPM, and the CPU temp is pretty steady at 53C. The MB temp is around 30C under these loads.
Do a test, use Prime 95 and allocate work on all your cores. You will see an immediate core temp increase with TEMPIN0 lagging slightly behind but catching up fast. It usually is about 5C cooler than the indicated core temps. As soon as you stop the CPU workers, all those temps drop again immediately. I have never seen that temp higher than the cores, and always in unison with the cores. If it was the NB temp, then there would be no reason for it not to be higher than the core temps during mem intensive tasks. Also with my aftermarket cooler blowing towards the back of the case, increased CPU fan speed would not cause an immediate reduction in the NB temp, as it does not blow onto the CPU surrounding area. Thus I fathom it is the CPU temp. But as I said, if someone has other info, they are welcome to correct me.

  • What is a safe CPU temp?

So I've noticed my MBA has been getting up to 90 degrees+ while gaming (I know these aren't meant for that, but hey, it works so it will). Anyway, I was wondering if such high temps was healthy and if they are okay, and if they are fine, is it healthy to have these temps for hours(Since Thursdays I game for roughtly 3-4hrs)?
    P.s.
It actually gets hot enought that the metal around the WASD keys heat up, and can almost burn my figertips :s

Thanks for the intel link, I'll be sure to watch if it goes past 100°c.
Intel's CPUs are designed to "throttle back" when they reach that temperature. Thats why the "turbo boost" speed is higher, the speed listed as its main speed is what it can run at constantly and what the cooling system is designed to handle. The "turbo boost" increases power beyond that to the CPU's full speed until the thermal limit is reached.
By increasing fan speed you will delay the time when it has to throttle, increasing long-term performance.

Also, this isn't the first time I've seen someone say 'Speeds higher than 2000 rpm may damage your Macbook' but I'm kind of questions how exactly.
They are the same kind of people that will say "never revv your cars engine over 3000rpm when accelerating". Overly cautious because they aren't sure how it actually works.
Higher fan speeds will hurt nothing but your battery time, just as revving a cars engine will hurt nothing but fuel economy.

  • Safe Imac operating temperatures.

    Hi,
I've searched google and looked at some older posts but haven't really been able to find what im looking for.
i was wondering if there is a list of what the min to max safe operating temps are for intel imacs (aluminum).
i have a 3-4 yr old intel 24" alu imac that's recently been shutting down and i think it's due to overheating.
i downloaded temperature monitor and these are my readings after turning on my computer (after it has been shut down all night).
    ambient air - 24C/75F
    cpu A heatsink 35C/95F
    CPU Core 1 - 33C/91F

Sure - I understand the point you're making.
The machine I took to the reseller was out of AppleCare.
Maybe I wasn't insistent enough with Applecare on the 'phone, after all, a crash can be caused by all sort of things and hardware is often way down the list. They suggested I created a new account and see if that crashed. Frankly, I didn't have time to stop using my iMac productively to muck about trying things.
When both machines went the same way, I was suspicious. To hear of someone else in the same boat makes me think I was on to something and not going mad. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple have stats on these failures which could well point to a design failure.
I'm bitter as I lost a lot of time on the whole issue - faithfully filling in crash reports etc and when I called up for support I was fobbed off. Next time I will just unplug the lot and take it to the Genius bar!
I'm not looking for support now though, I'm just *******'

  • Does the Neo4-F suffer the same temp problems as the Neo2 Platinums?

    Hey there,
I'm about to change my Neo2's below and in the process put these five Opteron 146's in "something'.
(The Asus board is a test bed. I really liked my old A7N8X Dx's and bought it cheap enough used)
Can someone here answer if the Neo4-F's suffer the temp reading problems as my Neo2 Platinums do?
Nothing like rebooting to "get' a lower temp. Or watch it rise 1-2deg a day in a stable ambient.
I'd really like to not end up with new BIOS's being released attempting to cure the "supposed" temps reported.
They run 24/7 for Grid.org's Cancer Research and misleading or incorrectly reported temps worry me at times.
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Hi......
Can´t speak for the Neo4-F MoBo, just some general comments, that may or may not help you.
What temp problems did you have with your Neo2 MoBo ?
Getting a 100% accurate cpu temp reading seems to be difficult task to achieve for many Vendors and softwaremakers.
Differant vendors may have differant ways to monitor the integreated cpu temp sensor, which does not necessarily mean that the actual cpu temp is differant between differant MoBo´s.
Meaning a low cpu temp report may not be true and vice versa, so knowing the true cpu temp is not that easy, but I believe that any system that runs stable 24/7 is happy, no matter what cpu temp that is reported ( within reasonable values)
There are usually some "safe cpu temp" biossettings that could be changed, if the reported cpu temp is too high, to avoid shut downs / boot problems.
    Some basic factors to consider are ;
    - ambient room temperature
    - what cpu cooler / thermal grease is used
    - case / system ventilation and airflow
    - what biosversion used
    - surrounding system componenets, like VGA, PSU etc.
    - stock or OC cpu-speed and cpu voltage
The above factors are the things you can affect yourself, no matter what MoBo.
    For the moment I´m running a K8N Neo2 / Winchester with some 28c idle and 45c load.
I´m getting an opteron 146 to the weekend and it will be interesting to see what cpu temp I will get.
It is my understanding that the opterons runs a bit hotter compared to winchester / Venice cores.

  • 5850 max VRM temps?

Basically what the title says. Ive heard varying opinions on what the safe max temps are for the VRM.
I hit 1000MHz on the core and it's perfectly stable in GPUTool.
But when I run Furmak even though the core temp never gets above 72-73, VRM temps get up to 85C after a couple minutes. This is with the fan @ 100% so I shut it down.
I actually have some aftermarket cooling on the way but I still need this info.
    TIA...

  • Please Help! Ready to throw my iPhone out the window!

First time posting on the forums but it's gotten to the point where my phone isn't even usable and I either need some answers or a good excuse to smash it.
    So here's the story:
I got my iPhone 3G (black, 16GB) in September (I think), last year. The phone operated fine with only minor annoyances as software updates came down to fix issues, no big deal. About 10 months in, the phone starts acting up:
If you want clarification on some problem, ask. I don’t want to type out 8 paragraphs if I don’t have to, should be pretty self-explanatory.
    Before OS 3:
1.) Can’t slide to answer calls. After ringing stops phone behaves normally.
2.) Doesn’t charge from wall or computer (happened randomly). Plug phone in, it says it’s charging but never charges.
3.) Can’t end calls / call doesn’t end when other line is hung up (thanks for wasting my minutes).
(these problems persist even with hard resets and full restores, including setting the phone up as a new phone rather than restoring from a backup)
After OS 3 AND full restore:
1.) Can’t slide to answer calls. After ringing stops phone behaves normally.
2.) Can’t end calls / call doesn’t end when other line is hung up (thanks for wasting my minutes).
(same as above, problems persist with hard resets and the like)
At any rate, I was home one weekend and figured I’d take the phone to the Genius bar at the Mayfair Mall Apple Store. Sounded like a good plan until I get to the mall and find the store is being renovated (seriously Apple, you can’t just put that on your site that a store is closed for some reason? Give me a break). Home is 3 hours away for me and the closest Apple store is 2.5 hours away. Awesome.
I deal with the problems for another month or so until my girlfriend and I take a trip to visit her friend in Minnesota. While there we go to the Mall of America so I decide to go to the Apple Store there (which is flappin’ giant, by the way). I explain my problems to the ‘Genius’ as well as informing him of the numerous restores/resets I’ve done both before and after the 3.0 update. He checks the phone for water damage and concludes that the headphone/dock ports are dusty which is causing the charging problem. I proceed to tell him I’ve cleaned them with compressed air before and the problems continued but he’s the ‘Genius’ so I let him do his thing and clean them again. Afterwards, he concludes (via the iPhone diagnostic software they have) that since I haven’t done a restore in about a month that I should do another one as that will likely remedy the problem. Right. Was he even listening when I explained that the problems happened before and after the 3.0 update or that I had on numerous occasions attempted to remedy the problem with hard resets and restores? Nope. My girlfriend over hears this (she is aware of the problems I was having and is a Apple-certified hardware technician at our local Mac store) and comes over to reiterate (albeit slightly more forcefully than I had initially) that the problems occur regardless of restore state or software version. The ‘Genius’ finally decides he can replace the phone after explaining to him that we are not anywhere near an Apple store and that there’s little time left in the warranty. I get my new phone set up and ready to go. Whew.
Everything is great. Phone works, no issues. Until ~2 months ago, new issues start cropping up.
OS 3.1+ (happen on all versions):
1.) Can’t sync, get “unable to complete. Phone was disconnected.” Error. (I checked around the forums and tried a few things but was unable to resolve the issue, including trying to remove the files that it kept ‘disconnecting’ on when it got to, no effect)
2.) Installing an application (be it via App Store on the phone or via sync with my desktop) results in the phone being unable to boot if turned off. When attempting to turn it back on, Apple logo shows then phone goes off after a few seconds. Only way to resolve this is by booting the phone directly to restore mode and doing a full restore.
3.) Earlier this week, my phone wouldn’t boot after having no apps (0, zero, zip, nada) on it after restoring it a few weeks back. Apple logo showed up then the spinning loading animation overlaid on the logo only to freeze. Attempted booting again and it came on (whew).
4.) Today, my phone wouldn’t boot at all, again, no apps are on or have been on the phone since I last restored it. Tried turning it off/on a few times, no good. I ended up restoring the phone again.
At first, my girlfriend was convinced that it was because I was synching with my desktop PC (obviously, blame it on the PC first), which I’ve been using since I got the phone and everything was fine until both phones randomly decided to crap out. I ended up restoring it on my MacBook Pro as a new phone just to see but the same thing happens with the apps causing it to not boot. After that we thought that it might be a single (or a few) apps that were just taking the phone down for some reason. I restored the phone with no apps and it seemed to be ok so I put 3 apps that I’ve had pretty much since they were available (and used to work without issue) back on to see. The plan was to add a few apps until the phone stopped working properly to narrow down the offending app. Just kidding! Just having those 3 apps (Beejive IM, Facebook, iDracula) causes the phone to not boot. I restore and try just Facebook. Same thing, phone doesn’t boot. Restore, try just Beejive. Same thing, phone won’t boot. By the way, the phone doesn’t boot even without me having LAUNCHED THE APPS AT ALL. Just by being on my phone it’s totally hosed.
At this point I have no idea what to do. I want to like my iPhone again but it’s terribly worthless when I have to restore it every other day and can’t use my ~$90 worth of apps (PS: even Apple’s own ‘Remote’ app brings the phone down). I really, really hate to say it but my old HTC Hermes (Windows Mobile 5/6) PDA phone was better than this (and WinMo is god-awful).
Does anyone have any suggestions? My phone is out of warranty now and I don’t have money to buy another phone even if I wanted to.
Also, I treat my phone like a baby. It hasn't been dropped a single time, been near water, or operated outside of the safe operating temp guidlines.
I'm willing to elaborate on any of the information I provided above, just let me know.

After the restore did the phone work properly for a while? Say, a day or so?
If so it is possible you have an app that doesn't let go of memory properly. I reboot my iPhone ( hold sleep/wake and hole till you see the apple logo) every few days. This resets the memory. The iPhone OS has doesn't seem to mange memory very well yet. So a reboot will help with that. I have had my phone almost slow to a stop before I started rebooting. Always reboot after installing a new app. Also do you close all pages in Safari when you are done? This is a good practice. Safari will run in the background and use processor time and drain your battery quicker. Create a new blank page then close all others when you are done browsing for a while. I have also found that certain web site that have animated images like weather maps will turn the phone into molasses. As soon as i close that page it gets faster.
If all of the above have no effect then as Tamara said it is time for a trip to the Genius bar.
    Good luck

  • Changing local host name

I would like to change my command prompt at the terminal window. At present it is shown as <mycompletename@XXXXXXX>
where "mycompletename" is well my name and xxxxxxxxx are some alpha numeric characters. How can i get rid of this alphanumberic characters? i tried using hostname -s XXX, but its not permanent. Some more searching said to change hostconfig in /etc, but i dont see anything as HOSTNAME-AUTOMATIC, in there. Another option which works is PS1='something', however, this is also not permanent. I am not sure what else i can do to change name of command prompt to show myname@somethingdifferent.
Is there any thing i can do with on my .bash_profile in my home directory? or any thing else? please guide. I am the admin of the computer, however i have not set any root.

I've checked your other thread. I fear, you misunderstood my first posting. There I said:
    Add the following line:
    HOSTNAME=$HOSTNAME
where $HOSTNAME is the hostname you want to set.
    That means:
Replace $HOSTNAME with the actual hostname you want to give the computer. The line should finally have looked something like 'HOSTNAME=MacBook'.
Sorry, but I was under the impression you would know at least some basics in script programming and how to use variables and how to read other people's code. I guess my instructions where just not clear enough.
The problems you describe in your other thread are because the root filesystem is mounted read-only in single user mode. You need to remount the filesystem read-write before you can make any changes to files.
I just took a quick look at Google to find the neccessary commands. I've just tested it on my MacBook, worked perfectly.
    1. Boot the Mac into single user mode by pressing and holding 'Command + S' during boot time.
    2. When you're at the command line type the following:
    /sbin/mount -wu /
That will remount the root filesystem read-write and you'll be able to edit the system files.
    3. When you're done editing, save the file. If you're using vi ignore the message about not being able to safe some temp vi file. Just hit ENTER once. After that type 'exit', hit ENTER once more and the Mac should boot up fine again.

This has been discussed for years and the short answer is -
whatever is being displayed on your

or any of the various screen grab utilities available.

  • Shut down without warning @ 30% , firewire not working , sleep mode problem

    Hello!
I seem to have a combination of problems in which I believe that somehow they must be related altogether. I would appreciate any advice you may have on the cause of these problems and/or any solutions. Here's a detailed list of the problems:
    1. The computer shuts down without warning at about 30% battery.
    2. The Firewire doesn't seem to work when I try to connect my external HD.
    3. The firewire Bus data is not shown on the System Profiler.
    4. The sleep mode doesn't work; if I press the "sleep" icon, it doesn't respond to it.
    5. When I close the lid and open it again, the screen remains turned off which requires me to force shut down the computer every time. Yet, it seems that its only the screen that does not want to come back up, the unit seems operational.
    6. The sleep light indicator does not pulse when lid is closed, it stays on.
Actions taken:I have tried resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) to no avail. Have the battery update. Have reset the PRAM.

  • Is the new I5 Macb Air always hot?

I have jusy bought a new MacB Air 13 I5 and it seems to be always hot. My previous MacB air Core2 did not.

that is within the safe operating temp range per apple (50-95F)
The "operating temperature" is the environmental temp, not the CPU temp.  95F is about 35C.  The CPU can safely operate up to about 100C (although, that's a max and temps in that range should be minimal).  95F (35C) is practically cold for your processor.  It's not even approaching a temp that would be an issue.  I would imagine you see that temp pretty much right after you turn your machine on.  I would expect it to go up somewhat under normal use.

  • Speedfan readings/settings

    Hi
Could somebody help with a bit of information about SpeedFan?
I have done a search of this section, and there's quite a lot about SpeedFan, but I can't find the information I'm looking for.
I need to know which elements (CPU, System, Northbridge etc) the temperature readings in Speedfan relate to for my two boards.
    I've got a Neo 875P and a Neo 875P F1S2R.
Also, what should be the safe/ideal temp readings?
    Many thanks
    Tonto

    Thanks for this
    Have downloaded both.
HW monitor shows a display with three temperatures (as does Speedfan), provided by Winbond W83627HF.
    TMPIN0   32
    TMPIN2   62
    TMPIN2   40
    All in degrees celsius.
Problem is, I don't know which temeperatures are which, and I can't find a tab in Everets that tells me what Winbond is measuring/connected to...
I'm running a P4 3.2ghz (my first machine shown in my signature).
    Any help gratefully received

I've applied Artic Silver to the CPU/Heatsink correctly (I say correctly because I had it on previously and the temps kept rising into the mid 60's but now the cpu temp is at 47-54c when idle or just been used according to Speed Fan.  According to PC Alert 4 the CPU fan (same temp as Speed fan) but the fan speed is 1360 which is written in red and sounding a warning alert.  Do I need to worry about this?
Is the mid 50's a safe cpu temp?
As there seems to be a lot of differing opinions on here.
    Thanks.

If you ever get to pulling the HS/FAN for reasons like an upgrade, consider pulling the CPU and checking the temp sensor position.
It should not make contact with the CPU and should resemble an "L" rotated clockwise.
You will always get higher temp readings if it is touching the bottom of the CPU as it is probably in contact with one of the discrete components on the bottom and will invariably give a higher temp.
I just experienced this on one of my friends who built his first machine after going through it myself a month ago. Now my temps are 39 at idle with the fan set to high. It idles around 47-48 at the low setting.
You are fine however, if you are not experiencing any difficulties.
