<FONT face=Verdana color=#ff9900>is there a way to solve it without having to reformat. btw, reformat means my song will be all gone right? thank~

valencia,
Media error would usually means failure on the player. I would suggest contacting support for services but before that, you may like to try doing a Clean up from Rescue mode. The sticky at the top of this (MP3 Players) forum covers the steps on how to get into Rescue Mode or you can check out the Knowledgebase article for the ste

  • IPod doesn't sync to iTunes and "safely remove hardware" doesn't appear

I've got an iPod Nano (2nd generation) which is still in excellent condition. I download some songs from iTunes, and decide to sync them to my iPod. When I plug my USB adapter into my computer and then my iPod, I expectd the title "syncing iPod" to come up, but it didn't. I also looked at my taskbar, and the "safely remove hardware" icon was not there. Also, the device home for my iPod does not come up in iTunes, not allowing me to make any changes to my iPod. Can you help me with this very weird problem I am having?

  • How can i "Safely Remove" My Passport Ultra from my PC?

I can't EVER "Safely Remove" my My Passport Ultra drive from my PC!
The computer's an HP notebook (if that matters), and it's running Vista (64bit).
I can't believe that there's NO way to eject / unmount / "Safely Remove" the drive from my computer when i need to disconnect it from the port!
But i can't find any way to do it, other than shutting down the system entirely. Obviously, shutting down every time i want to unplug the drive is so RIDICULOUSLY impractical, i can't even consider it as an option.
The "Knowledge Base" pages don't seem particularly knowledgeable on the subject.
The only suggestions offereed there are to close any applications that are acccessing thedrive, including the Windows indexer and any virus/spyware programs that might be running.
Obviously I've already done that. I've set the drive to never be idexed or scanned/monitored for viruses and spyware.
And yet still, every time i try to eject the drive, it's the same message:
"Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device"
"Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later."
Sometimes, even after i manually end the WD software via the Windows services menu, they just start back up again a few seconds later (even though i set them in the services menu to only be launched manually).
But the rest of the time, even when none of the WD software is running, Windows still tells me the drive is in use and won't let me eject it.
There's GOTTA be a way around this.
I've never had this problem with any OTHER external drive.
I'm still waiting for a reply to the Support Case i submited yesterday, but i'm getting impatient.
Does anybody else know any solutions to this problem? I can't be the only one stumped by it...

    Update:
I think I finally solved the problem (no thanks to WD...).
I had already excluded the My Passport Drive from being indexed by the Windows Indexer.
And from being scanned or protected by antivirus software.
And from being monitored by Windows Defender.
What i didn't realize is that the WD Smartware software and the other WD applications were running automatically at startup, whether or not the drive was connected.
And so even if i closed them manually, they relaunched automatically in the background again.
Finally, i used a third-party program to remove all the WD applications and services from the startup and autorun lists on my computer.
This seems to be working so far.
I've been able to connect the drive, manually run the WD Smartware application, perform a backup, and close WD Smartware again. And then Windows allows me to "Safely Remove" (eject) the drive without any problems. I've gotta say that it makes no sense for WD's software to be ser up to run automatically, but that's the way it was set up by default when i installed it. Maybe it would make sense if WD expected its users to leave it connected and running all the time, but this is a PORTABLE drive. Leave it connected and constantly running in the background would defeat the purpose of being "portable" entirely, wouldn't it?

  • I would like to uninstall or otherwise safely remove any applications that make my MB Pro run slowly.

I would like to uninstall or otherwise safely remove any applications that make my MB Pro run slowly. I will have to keep a few apps such as CrossWeb and Veraport due to having to use secure banking and government websites in Korea. I also need the LogMeIn app to access a server in the USA, but I realise that some people recommend getting rid of it.
I tried but apparently have been unsuccessful in removing a McAfee VirusScan application completely. I can still see some files in the HD Library. Any ideas here on how to safely uninstall/remove?
Also any suggestions on how to get rid of my incompatible virtualbox? I think it's 4.0.4.
Also, if you see anything else I should uninstall/remove from the EtreCheck below, by all means please make suggestions.
Thanks so much for your help, suggestions, and advice!

You have so much junk, and I doubt that you know how to uninstall it.
It's up to you what you do, I know what I would do  (but then I wouldn't stuff my Mac with junk in the first place)

  • External USB Hard Drive Can't Be Safely Removed After Boot Camp 3.1 Install

I just wanted to report that I've done multiple installs of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my MacBook 4,1 and although I've had no problem using the cmd workaround ( http://www.zath.co.uk/how-to-install-windows-7-on-apple-mac-boot-camp/ ) to install the 64-bit Boot Camp drivers that come with the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard retail DVD, I have found that by installing the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers on the same system, under no circumstance can I click the the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray and not receive a message saying that ... "The device 'Generic Volume' cannot be safely ejected..." and that some program or service must be using it. However, a restart doesn't solve the problem any more than logging out does.
I read somewhere that part of the fix that Boot Camp 3.1 was intended to provide was to allow safe ejecting of the Macintosh HFS+ partition. Well, my external hard drive has three partitions: one NTFS, another NTFS, and a third HFS+ for Time Machine backups. I suspect, since I haven't seen anyone else reporting this issue, that it may simply be that the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers don't take into account the possibility of an HFS+ partition on external USB devices. Anyway, a System Restore to before Boot Camp 3.1 drivers were installed completely remedies the issue.
At this point, I'm not having any trackpad issues or anything else of note with respect to the original Boot Camp 3.0 drivers that came with the Snow Leopard retail disc, so I'm fine keeping those drivers installed and allowing Windows Update to update the Intel and Marvell drivers as it recommends. I just find it slightly amusing that the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers, which supposedly did not support Windows 7 (let alone the 64-bit version) work better than the 3.1 drivers which do supposedly support Windows 7. And the funny thing (or is it?) is that you have to install the original Boot Camp drivers with the cmd workaround before you're even able to update to the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers. Hilarious stuff there.
Proprietary gamesmanship is a big reason some of us prefer the Linux "share the ownership +for free+" model of computing. Just saying...
Anyone have any proper solutions (as in, other than "don't install the updates then!")?
    bkadoctaj

I have a pair of external usb drives, one formatted for NTFS and the other for HFS+ connected through an external 7 port hub. I am running Windows 7 (64 bit) with bootcamp 3.1 on a late 2009 Mac BookPro. I share the same "safely remove hardware" issues you described. I always assumed it was because my external drives were connected through my external USB hub because of a similar issue I had running Vista (64 bit), but now I can confirm directly connecting the external USB HFS+ drive also yields the same "safely remove hardware" problem. Unfortunately for me, if I regress to the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers, my audio drivers, at times, fails to load. I would need to regress to Windows Vista (64 bit), the last environment where my iSight camera, internal speakers and all other hardware performed correctly. I would gladly, at this point, live with the "safely remove hardware" issue in exchange for a working iSight camera, the one and only hardware device lost to me in the move to Windows 7.

  • Not able to safely remove USB drive while Labview is open

    To all the Gurus,
I am using LabView 8.5 and have made an Application which requires user to download data from USB drive/stick. So when VI runs user asked to select a .TXT file from USB to download. Here whole operation completes as desired. ONLY PROBLEM I am facing is when download completes User tries to "safely remove USB drive" where windows gives a warning saying USB is in use and cannot be removed.
In this particular VI I am using file dialog function to browse through USB and let user select a file. I even tried using open file function but it is giving same error.
The only way I can safely remove USB after downloading is by exiting Labview which is not feasible for my application.
is it a Bug in 8.5 or is there any different way to do it?
Any type of help will be appreciated.

  • T410s External Display and Safely Remove Hardware Problems

I have two problems with my new T410s with Windows 7.  First, I use it with an external display.  It works fine when I set the dispaly settings to Projector Only and set the power settings to Do Nothing When I Close the Lid.  However, when I restart the computer the screen image on the external display is often mis-sized, does not cover the whole screen, and has part of the image cut off.  If I open the lid and change the display setting to computer only, then back to projector only it works fine again.
Any ideas on why it will not hold the proper setting when I turn the computer off?
The second problem is common to both my wife's X201 with Windows 7 and my new T410s.  If you click on Safely Remove Hardware/Eject Mass Storage Device both computers will tell us it is now safe to remove our device.  However, if the device is one of our compact external backup drives the device's light will still be on and the disk will still be spinning, so it seems it cannot really be safe to remove it.  This happens even if we wait a minute after the safely remove indication to see if the external drive shuts down after a short delay - it doesn't!
As a result, my wife and I are shutting down our computers whenever we want to remove an external storage device.  Any comments or ideas would be welcome!

For anyone who is concerned about the "safely remove hardware" issue noted in my original post, I have done more research and found that Windows 7 maintains power to the USB ports after safely remove has been executed in order to allow devices like MP3 players to continue charging after they are safely removed.  Windows XP actually shut off the power to the USB ports and this is what I was used to until I got a new T410s with Windows 7.
This means an external HDD's disk will also keep spinning.  However, the safely remove sequence is SUPPOSED to cause the disk's heads to move away from the disk and return to their at rest position, so there should be no damage to the HDD if it is removed even though the disk is still spinning.
Since I have no way to assure this is happening I am still turning off my computer and making sure the disk has stopped spinning before I remove my USB HDD.
I would appreciate comments from people who know more than me about this issue, especially if my info. above is not correct!

  • How to properly get rid of the SATA drives in "Safely Remove Hw"(systray Icon)

If you have the nvidia ide and or raid enabled (using the nv/sw ide driver) you have the
drives listed under add/remove hw icon in systray .
To have it gone from now and forever use this dword in registry .
    Code: [Select]
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata]
    "DisableRemovable"=dword:00000001
Open notepad and copy/paste in this , then save it as a reg file , e.g : dis_removable.reg
Double click it to merge into registry.
Do do it manually in registry :
    Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata
Create a dword value named "DisableRemovable" without the quotes and set the value to 1
If you dont have the nvata key (e.g nforce 3 drivers) do the same in :
    Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvatabus
Create a dword value named "DisableRemovable" without the quotes and set the value to 1
    Before :
    Samsungs are in Raid-0 (nvraid/nvata).
The other two is single disks (nvata).
    After:
All gone , just the USB left as it should be
If you dont have any fw(1394) or usb removables , the entire "Safely Remove HW" is also gone from systray
    Reg files zip:
    nvata-removable.zip

I have an external SATA hard disk. edit: using firewire as the connection port
If I use this registry, will I still be able to safely remove my external hard disk?
All sata disks are connected to the same controller ports on the nvidia motherboard ,
the controller doesn't know if it's an internal disk or one externally connected through a e-sata bracket .
So as said earlier (in post #4) : dont use the reg key if you plan add/remove sata disks in general (internal disks or external disks) .
But in your case if the sata hd box is firewire connected it's an external firewire disk from the OS point of view,
so the reg key doesnt affect this drives ability to stop via "safely remove hw" and it will still be there .
It would only affect you if you had sata all the way .

USB Drives works, but does not show up in "Safely Remove Hardware"
    windows 8
USB Drives works, but does not show up in "Safely Remove Hardware"
    Here are my symptom
    - USB Flash Drives , USB External HDD works normally
    - I can see them in "My Computer"
    - I can open "Safely Remove Hardware" via Run Command, but there is no device in the list
    - They show up as "Disk drives" in device manager
    - When I right click their icons in "My Computer", there is no option to "Eject" them
    - In "Disk Management", they show up as "Basic". Prior to this issue, they were "Removable"
After I tested, it seems that my Vista detects every USB storage device as a normal HDD.
I don't know why but I'd appreciate any help because I have to plug-in and remove those drives often, especially flash drives.
    Thank you

  • ? Best way to remove the notification area "Safely Remove" icon?

I have a new T500 running Vista64.  I've been able to customize it mostly to my liking.  But I still have a notification area icon called "Safely Remove Hardware."  When I click on it a window pops up allowing me to "safely remove" the Ma*shi*ta DVD drive.  I will never remove this hardware.
There are pretty clear methods that disable this icon and seemingly work perfectly for nVidia installations of serial ATA drives, but this T500/Vista64 setup doesn't have those drivers or the registry key that is modified.  I am aware that I can customize the notification area to "hide inactive icons" (via Taskbar properties) but there is only this one icon and it does not serve a purpose.  I am certain that there is a benign way to remove the icon that does not involve other software (like RemoveSRHI) and only removes the icon as it pertains to the "removable" Ma*shi*ta DVD drive.  Any temporary hardware, like a flash drive, that needs this will still display the icon.  The nVidia setups simply add a registry fix to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata by adding a DWord "DisableRemovable." I've read from quite a few successful users of this registry fix and there doesn't seem to be a downside.
Does someone that knows a lot more about these drivers know if the DisableRemovable DWord can be added to a different key that's in my setup so the icon isn't displayed?  I'm guessing there are thousands of T500 users that would thank you!    Many Thanks,  Ben

I remember having this happen on my Toshiba, and since I never safely removed anything, I hid it.
Since you're still wanting to use it to remove USB drives, etc. I found a dandy program, it allows you to hide devices you don't want to stop. I've never used it, but the domain said it all for me: http://www.safelyremove.com/
Hope it works for you, it did for someone else in a forum I visted via some Googling.

  • IPod only connects as Removable Disk (E:) and says "Safely Remove Hardware

I recently posted about this problem and since then, I have not been able to do a thing. I have done the 5 R's, and still nothing. This is very frustrating, I just want my iPod so update again. The music and videos are still on it but some songs just totally skip, and few videos don't work correctly. Still, even in disk mode, the iPod connects as Removable Disk (E:) and pops up into the taskbar as "safely remove hardware." I've read about formatting the iPod but I really don't want to mess it up. My patience is waring thin once again.
This weekend I am looking to go to the Apple Store to see if they can see what is wrong with it and get it repaired, or just get a new one. I'll post again on what happens. Any help about my problem will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop   Windows XP

I've been having a similar problem with ipod software not interacting with the windows system correctly. I was having to go through the "Restore" defaults process over and over (for last three days) with no success. I went to the Apple Store, Genius counter at Westfield Mall today and the tech did a reset to "Restore Defaults" with no problem from an apple machine. He also loaded 2000 songs successfully.
I bought the 60G ipod with video Thursday this week and have been fighting with it since then.
At home, I tried ipod updater with Restore Defaults and the software failed and corrupted the ipod folder index file. I've been trying to do all this through a PCMCI Dual Link card (which has the USB2 port on it) and was getting all sorts of different types of problems and errors (like the folder with the "!") and having no luck getting the windows format through the "Restore Defaults" choice. In an act of desperation I decided to try a regular USB port (I believe it's the 1.1 version, but not sure) on the computer directly and was able to get the factory setting "Restore" into the ipod (but with a slower speed of data transfer). I rebooted the computer and then brought up iTunes to do the sync of songs which took about 1.5 hours (for ~2000 songs) but worked fine. I've shut down and restarted the computer a few more times since then and iTunes still finds the ipod on the same USB port and does the sync without issue.
I believe my problem was the ADS Technology Cardbus Interface Card (which has Firewire & USB 2.0 ports) and plugs into the PCMCI slot on the side of my computer. If I don't use this card and instead use a regular USB (1.1?) port, the wide variety of problems I was having have disappeared.
My 2 cents for what it's worth.

  • How to Safely Remove Hardware under Hyper-V 2008 R2?

    Hi,
I'm using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, but it seems that there is broader experience/support with Server Core, so I'll try this question here.
There's no GUI, so how do I Safely Remove Hardware, e.g. a USB-attached external backup drive? I'm looking for a command-line tool to list removable drives, let me specify what to remove, and tell me when it's safe to remove it.
Also, how do I configure the drive properties (either safe removal or turn on write caching)?
    Thanks,

  • Safely Remove USB Drives: Gnome

I am using Arch-64bit-Gnome3, Shell and other gnome defaults.
While trying to remove my External Hard Disk I noticed that there is NO "Safely Remove" in right click menu. Since I also use and have used other distros with gnome I know that this is feature has always been there. However, in Arch its not there by default. I don't know if this is the 'Arch Way'.
I have 'Disk-Utility' intalled so I was wondering if there is any package that I need to install or any configuration to be set to get this 'Safely Remove' feature in my right click context menu. Without this and using only unmount the External Hard Disk is not completely disabled or deactivated to be safely unpluged.
Please guide me to a proper Solution.
    Thanks...

  • Safely remove pics in finder/iphoto library

I moved some photos from our pc to my imac. I have 8 videos from a friends camera that downloaded okay. Now everytime I open iphoto, I have a message saying that there are 8 photos in the library that were not imported and do I want to import them yes or no. I removed them from the application but the message still pops up. They are in the finder/pictures library as recovered photos separate from the originals. Each video has a padlock on it and the videos are called"unix unexecutable files". How can I safely remove them from the finder library without wiping out my 3000 photos in the application? I can't open iphoto or download until I answer the import question.Thanks.

    1. Given the the files are locked (hence the padlock) they will need to be unlocked before they can be trashed. To do this, in the Finder, select each one in turn and go File -> Get Info and uncheck the locked box.
    2. How did you remove them from the Application? Put them into the iphoto Trash and then empty the trash should remove all trace of them from your library. Files and all.
    3. They have become 'Unix Executables' because they have lost their file suffix, which can happen when files are moved from PC formatted disks to Mac ones.
Finally, Your photos are safe. In the iPhoto Library Folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
The library6.iphoto file is your actual library database. Even if that is corrupted, your photos are stored apart from it. You might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. OF course, this is in addition to your usual back up routine.
