Safest settings to connect airport extreme A1354 to DSL modem

I want to connect my DSL modem (Motorolla 3347) to my Airport extreme (A1354) which will be used as a base for connecting multiple wireless devices.
I would preferr not to bridge the airport. What are the safest settings to select on the airport for wifi security and most function using airplay?

I would preferr not to bridge the airport.
In that case, you would need to check to see if the Motorola modem/router can possibly be configured to act as a simple bridge mode modem. If it can, then the AirPort can be configured to act as the main router for the network handling DHCP and NAT services.
Next check with your ISP to make sure that they will support you for this type of configuration.
IF....the modem can be configured to operate as a simple bridge...and IF....your ISP will support this type of setup, then the AirPort Extreme needs be configured to Connect Using = PPPoE.
The safest settings for Wi-Fi are WPA2 Personal, also known as WPA2-PSK-AES with a long password comprised of random letters and numbers.
AirPlay does not care what type of connection that you have as long as the signal is strong enough.

Problems with connecting AirPort Extreme with SBC DSL Modem

We bought the AirPort Express specifically because we were told it was a snap to setup with Windows and DSL. I cannot get it set up. Have Windows Vista, AT&T DSL and a 5100 Speed Stream DSL modem. After a couple of failed attempts, I called AT&T support for help and was told to make a change to the settings on the DSL modem. Still didn't help. When I gave up on the AP Ex and tried connecting the DSL cable directly to the computer, I couldn't get connected to the internet at all so spent another hour on the phone with AT&T support to get things working. Second support person told me that the suggestion I was given was wrong but it is on the 5100 Speed Stream support page so I'm not sure. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thank you so much for your help. I tried those settings but the connection didn't work. However, it is working by leaving some of the default settings. See the underlined settings below.
That leaves me with other questions:
1) But what are the conquences of those settings?
2) How do I determine if I have a secure network? (other than the computer, don't have any other wireless devices to check though we are planning to purchase one in the future). When I check on the windows network
center, everything is "off" except password protected sharing. I was hoping to see a security-enabled network identification for this new network somewhere.
2b) I set up wireless security WPA/WPA2 Personal but not a guest network (yet).
3) A problem (amber light) was discovered because:
Allow Setup over WAN was checked. For now, I ignored the warning for now but think I need to change it.
4) under the AirPort Utility/Summary page, what should the IP address be? It is completely different than the IP address for the DSL modem.
5) The reason I didn't set up a guest network yet was when I originally tried to set it when when "Connection Sharing" was set to Off (Bridge Mode) - as suggested - I received a warning that Guest network requires that this AP Express needs to be set to share a public IP address uding NAT/DHCP.
Sorry for the very basic questions. This obviously is my first attempt at setting up a wireless router.

To set up the AXn as a "bridge," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AXn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AXn, and then, try these settings:
AirPort Utility > Select the AXn > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
Network Name: <enter the desired Network Name or SSID>
Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) Set to automatic instead (and finding 80211a)
Channel: Automatic
Internet > Internet Connection
Connect Using: Ethernet
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode) Set to share a public address

Connecting Airport Extreme to a DSL

I have recently acquired an Airport Extreme which is connected to the DSL via an old Linksys Router. Signal keeps dropping and is slow especially in distant rooms. What is the best way to connect airport to DSL.
Does the Linksys wireless need to be disabled, if so please advise me how to do it.

If you add an AirPort Extreme to your existing Frontier Net network and permanently connect the AirPort Extreme to the Frontier wireless router using a wired Ethernet cable connection...
AND......you locate the AirPort Extreme in another part of your house where you need more wireless signal strength and coverage.......
AND......you configure the AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name and password as the Frontier wireless network.......
Then, you will have a much "bigger" wireless network with much greater range with higher wireless speeds throughout the house.
That would be be a good investment if your goal is to have a much bigger wireless network with greater range and speed throughout the house.

Trying to set up airport extreme with a dsl modem and get DSN server not found message . Get a green light on airport but no internet modem and get

Am attempting to set up a Wi Fi network with an airport extreme. Get most of the way through the setup (have a dsl modem) but get an error that it cannot connect to the internet. Says I have a problem with a DSN server and asks for what appears to be a series of numbers. I had an old airport express working for some time and never saw this.
Decided to upgrade since the express was not powerful enough to work in the whole house.

It is always a good idea when changing out networking hardware to perform a complete power recycle of all of your networking gear.
Please try the following:
Power-down the modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and computer(s). Leave them powered-off for at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to make sure that is has enough time to initialize.
Power-up (plug into power) the AEBS; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green. (Note: The status light may continue to flash amber after this timeframe. This is ok as it may just be letting you know that some additional configuration items need to be taken care of like setting up wireless security.)
Power-up the computer(s).
Computers connected to the AEBS by either wire or wireless should now be able to access the Internet. Please post back your results.

Airport Extreme and Westell DSL modem

Hi all,
I am a MCSE Certified Professional in Windows 2000.
I got a new Apple Airport Extreme router to replace my Sister's Netgear router. I kept having to reset it all the time. In setting up the Airport I found out that the Westell modem actually has a router built in. I did not know that before.
My question is whether to set this up as a router or a base station. I am know that setting up the Airport as a base station is the recommended way to go. But, I am thinking that it is also not as secure. Also I don't have as much control over port forwarding and VPN access, etc. Also how does the DHCP IP addressing work going only through the Westell modem? Right now I have the Airport setup as a router with NAT unchecked. And an IP address set to something other than 192.168.1.1. Which is what the Westell is set for.
The only think I dislike about the new Aiport Extreme is the fact that I can not change the gateway ip address. I can't understand why Apple decided to do it this way. In the Router configuration as described above the network is working very well so far.
What are your thoughts.

The 6100 is an older product (~2006?). Depending on how long your unit has been in service, there may have been firmware updates released by Verizon which will greatly affect the appearance and contents of pages presented by its embedded server. I advise you to update the 6100 firmware if needed, before changing the configuration. Verizon will often ship out a current DSL router to Mac subscribers on request, since Westell routers can't be flashed from a Mac. (You'd probably get a 7500). If you do choose to continue configuring the 6100, look for an "Advanced" tab where you can turn-off IP address distribution for a private LAN. That should effectively put the 6100 into bridge mode. However, Verizon employs dynamically-assigned DNS servers; without locally-stored DNS entries, I'm uncertain about how well the 6100 will continue to negotiate DNS lookups in bridge mode.
I can't offer any more-specific advice about configuring the 6100 since I've never used the product. However, based on what I do know about Verizon's suport for their hardware, I still believe that you'll be creating extra challenges down the road by chosing to configure any DSL router as a bridge, since Verizon won't provide troubleshooting support for that configuration.
Now that this discussion has substantially drifted away from anything relating to an Apple AirPort, I believe you'll get better configuring advice from Verizon DSL tech support (800 567-6789) and/or Verizon's DSL "High-Speed Internet" Help pages. So that other forum visitors may benefit from reading this discussion, please come back and post a descrption of the solution that worked for you.

CAN YOU ALTER NAT SETTINGS ON THE AIRPORT EXTREME

Can you alter the NAT settings on the airport extreme by any chance and if possible, how do you do this please.

Really confused here so I will start at the begining.
Right now I can access xbox live but only talk to certain friends and others cant hear me. This has been getting worse over the weekend. I can send messages no problem but I cant join a freinds game or chat but can send them messages.
Everything worked like a charm until I made some changes that are listed below
Had the airport extreme connected via adsl then my g5 mac picks the signal wireless. The xbox has a wireless adaptor so that also worked like charm unitl my changes below.
1, I upgarded to Tiger 2 weeks ago from panther
2, Sent the old ethernet cable from the old xbox 1 that was still atached to the airport extreme into a joytech multi component switcher that has 6 ethernet ports linked to each component channel. We have 2 xbox 360's and a ps3 and a wii for the kids so not enough components out in the tv.
3, Removed the ethernet cable out of the 360 and put the wireless adaptor back on, (after discovering the problem) re set the xbox to make it see the wireless bridge and now this..
Confused, not as much as me
Anyone please help as I have no idea what to do as I can talk to some people and not others.
I ran a test on the 360 and it stated my nat SETTINGS ARE MODERATE, they should be less, is there a way of altering the NAT settings on a g5 mac or airport extreme??

Connecting AirPort Extreme 802.11n directly to my Verizon FiOS service

I want to connect my new AirPort Extreme 802.11n directly to my Verizon FiOS service. The ActionTec wireless router supplied by Verizon died, and I bought an AirPort Extreme as a replacement. When I configured the AirPort extreme, it would not connect to the internet. I have read some posts here that indicate I plug my AirPort Extreme into the ActionTec and I am OK, however the ActionTec is dead.
Are there settings for the AirPort Extreme that are unique for going straight to the internet? What am I missing? My FiOS connection is an Ethernet connection- not coax.
Here is the interesting thing- I have an old AirPort Extreme (the round cone shaped model) that I plugged into the Verizon FiOS Ethernet connection. Everything works fine- I have a wireless connection to the internet. I didn't set anything. So my assumption is that I can make the new AirPort Extreme work with the Verizon FiOS.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, as I do not know if I have the strength to go through the Verizon help desk.

Good news! My problem was solved by calling Verizon FiOS support. The service tech said an AEBS can connect straight to the FiOS Ethernet connection. He broke the "lease" on my connection, had me connect the cable from the wall to my WAN slot, and then he "leased" my network connection to my AEBS. Works like butter now.
He said that the Verizon FiOS network "leases" the network connections every 24 hours or so, and had I left my AEBS connected to the network, it would have pushed the new setting down to the AEBS.

First the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) cannot share out an external HDD attached to its USB port unless it is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. It will not work if the HDD is formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT.
If the HDD is formatted properly, when you access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility, does the HDD show up properly on the Disks tab of the utility?
If it does, then you would access the HDD as any other network share, using the following format: //servername/sharename. In the case of the AirPort Disk (a HDD attached to the USB port of either an Extreme or Time Capsule), the "servername" would be the Extreme's Base Station Name, and the "sharename" would be the volumename of the HDD.

Connecting airport extreme, netgear dsl modem, windows 7, and Macbook pro

I'm having a problem connecting my airport extreme to my netgear modem, windows 7 pc and my Macbook Pro. Until a few days ago, I had a Westell wireless dsl modem and everything worked fine. Now, the only way I can connect to the internet is through my desktop pc and the hardwired modem.

If your goal is to extend/boost the range of your Netgear router with either or both of the AirPorts, this will not work wirelessly ... at least, not completely by wireless. That is because, WDS is not standard and each manufacturer has had creative license to implement it as they see fit for their products.
Instead, you have at least two other choices to use the Netgear (as the main Internet router) with the AirPorts:
Connect one AirPort directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure both AirPorts for an extended wireless network. In this configuration, you would be running two separate wireless networks; one created by the Netgear, and the second the extended network created by the AirPorts.
Connect both AirPorts directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure all of the routers for a roaming network. In this configuration, there would be a "single" wireless network where wireless network clients can literally roam from one router to another and still be on the "same" wireless network.

Sorry, but the Air Card cannot be used with the USB port on the AirPort Extreme because that port will only work with a hard drive and/or a printer.
Suggest that you check with Verizon to see if they have an adapter or wireless router for the Air Card that will provide an Ethernet signal to the AirPort Extreme.

There is not an audio port on the AirPort Extreme, so it cannot be used to stream audio per your question.
An AirPort Express will do the job.

Connecting AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express

Hi, I have a windows 7 pc connected to the internet with a dsl modem/router (technicolor TG587n v3 made by Thomson) and a Mac computer that gets connected wirelessly, but now I have purchased an AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express and I want to connect the new AirPorts to provide a more stable connection and also to extend the wifi signal and connect a non wifi USB printer to be accessible by the other computers in the household. Would it be possible for someone to spell out all of the steps to be taken to achieve this? Many thanks

No worries. It was all to do with the sequence of events which happened as follows (bear in mind that I'm not a technical person). First of all I've left the original moden/router's connection as it was, then I connected the Airport Extreme to the original modem with an ethernet cable. After this I started Airport Utility and I chose to do a manual setup until it recognised the Extreme, once this was done I plugged the Express to a power point, then Airport Utility recognised the Express and once again I did a manual setup and voila!
The above steps are only a summary of what took place as I did get a little bit confused as the first person that attended to my enquiry was not an expert with creating networks. The second person was amazing knowledgeable.
