Safety issue

This morning, before leaving for work, I (just) logged out of my iMac and put it to sleep. It was heavy raining, and not an hour ago, while at work, a thunder broke in the area (sorry for my English). Nothing happened, but I'm afraid I should've shut down my brand new iMac at home.
Could newer Macs in general "get fried" easily?
Now is 08:55 AM CET (approx. 02:55 AM EST), maybe someone from Europe could answer this.
Thank you.

Hi Sanjin,
For what it's worth, whenever I leave the house for more than an hour or two I shut down my iMac even though it is connected to a UPS battery system. Otherwise I just sleep it. If you want to feel truly safe you could try doing that and then not worry about the occasional thunder storm. I've done that for over 20 years now and have never had problems with any of my Macs even though some people believe that the shut-down turn-on cycle itself may be harmful to the electronics.

  • New tabs vanish when I view another one, MOST URL's vanish after a second and that is a safety issue if you can see if you are on the right page!

    A while ( couple weeks ) before the last update and change I noticed my URL's were vanishing a second after I arrived on a page. Not all URL's but most. This is a safety issue if I can't see I'm on the right page and have not been diverted.
    ALSO, I can't copy them to send a link via email if they aren't there! I found a way in the old FF click down list, but even that feature is gone on this new version! This needs fixed at once.
    AND when I make a new tab it vanishes! Or worse does not display like a tab. I can't go back and forth between pages if the tab vanishes. This started with the last FF update and change. This is poor design!!! When I updated the restore previous session grayed out. All my tabs were gone and I don't have them all in history. I was researching some things and it was important, now I can't remember them all. This is not a good thing!
    Unless you pin all your tabs immediately they will vanish??????? Stupid design. It does not even show the new tab for THIS page!!! "but is does show your URL....hmmmmm"
    What is the reason for having an arrow go through open tabs if they vanish???
    PLEASE FIX THIS or I'll have to change browsers, I'll have no choice. How can you do anything if FF erases your URL's or tabs!

    Hey Fox1User,
    Thank you for your message. I believe that this will happen when you have a dark theme applied to the new version of Firefox. It has been resolved in the 29.0.1 update that went out yesterday and would love to hear if this has improved the issue for you. I understand that the tabs are disappearing and it sounds like they may be blending into the tab bar.
    However! if this is not the case, can you please show a screenshot of the tabs [[How do I create a screenshot of my problem?]] after trying to produce this in Safe Mode [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
    I hope we find the culprit, looking forward to your reply.
    I also noticed you have 4 versions of Flash installed.

  • MacBook Pro Health and safety issue: Potential Burn during normal use

    Hi,
    I am not a complainer. I worked for Apple of 6+ years and have had a top of the line Apple Notebook since Apple created the concept of the laptop notebook.
    I recently experienced a 3rd degree burn using my MacBook Pro that I think Apple needs to warn folks about:
    MacBook Pro 17"
    Machine Model: MacBookPro1,2
    CPU Type: Intel Core Duo
    Number Of Cores: 2
    CPU Speed: 2.16 GHz
    L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B00
    Serial Number: ()
    SMC Version: 1.5f10
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    I had my laptop on my lap. I was wearing shorts. It noticed that it was warm on my leg where the left side of the MacBook Pro was touching my leg, but it didn't create a reflex pain response.
    Upon completing my session, when I closed the machine and put it away, I noticed a 1 inch x .75 inch blister on my leg where it had been touching the MacBook/Pro; and it has turn out to be a significant burn.
    I checked all the documentaiton that came with my MacBook Pro and there was no warning about the potential of this situation.
    I recommend that Apple let owners know, perhaps through an email or a popup when they visit the Apple site. Lastly, when I encountered this issue, I wasn't running any high performance, compute bound applications. It was email. So, I have to believe that it is possible to detect wait states within the processes running and take the processors to a low power mode of operation when they are not performing actual work. Am I out in left field here?
    I want Apple to be successful. I haven't heard of a similar complaint on any of the high performance PC's at work. Beyond a Health and Safety issue, this is also a reputation issue. Better to face into the storm and honestly deal with this issue.

    MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.5) Potential Health and Safety Issue- 3rd degreee burn potential under normal use

    Mike... I do sympathize with your situation but let me correct you:
    I recently experienced a 3rd degree burn using my
    MacBook Pro
    Do you know what a 3rd degree burn is? A 3rd degree burn involves the dermis, and is full thickness involving the subcutaneous tissues and fat underneath your skin layers. This is something that usually happens when man meets fire, electrocution, and chemical burns. A 3rd degree burn is not typically achieved by a simple transfer of energy by conduction, unless extreme heat for an extended period of time.
    I had my laptop on my lap. I was wearing shorts. It
    noticed that it was warm on my leg where the left
    side of the MacBook Pro was touching my leg, but it
    didn't create a reflex pain response.
    Reflex pain response? Don't try to make up medical terminology. You didn't feel it much like you don't feel the sun when you get a sunburn initially... your skin slowly adjusted to the temperature, and at some point the heat increased over the threshold of which causes damage. You should have gone to the doctor if you were overly concerned.
    Upon completing my session, when I closed the machine
    and put it away, I noticed a 1 inch x .75 inch
    blister on my leg where it had been touching the
    MacBook/Pro; and it has turn out to be a significant
    burn.
    You're right, if you have a 1inch by almost 1 inch heat related blister on your leg, it is bad, nothing that I would consider significant. That is less then 1% of your body, probably about 0.25% to 0.5%, and only a 2nd degree burn. Your most significant complication would be a local skin infection.
    I checked all the documentaiton that came with my
    MacBook Pro and there was no warning about the
    potential of this situation.
    Actually... I'd hate to call you a liar, but I'm pretty sure that it does warn about burns.
    To confirm this, apple has also information online:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
    I recommend that Apple let owners know, perhaps
    through an email or a popup when they visit the Apple
    site.
    They do... link above.
    Lastly, when I encountered this issue, I wasn't
    running any high performance, compute bound
    applications. It was email. So, I have to believe
    that it is possible to detect wait states within the
    processes running and take the processors to a low
    power mode of operation when they are not performing
    actual work. Am I out in left field here?
    No, you're definitely not. Here's where I start to agree with you. For the computer to heat up that much, when not doing things like rendering video is abnormal, and you deserve to have apple check out your computer. I think you should contact them on this concern.
    I want Apple to be successful. I haven't heard of a
    similar complaint on any of the high performance PC's
    at work. Beyond a Health and Safety issue, this is
    also a reputation issue. Better to face into the
    storm and honestly deal with this issue.
    It's harder for other manufacturers... our computers are aluminum, designed to disperse the heat. Technically they are considered "portables" not laptops, but I don't get into that argument because I disagree with the word "portable"... it's meant to work on your lap, and if you can't comfortably using regular apps, you deserve an answer.
    A slightly crisp, but loyal, MacBook Pro user.
    Hey, at least you're taking it with some humor. It's a shame you had to get hurt as a result of your computer. If I were you I would have gone to your Primary Care Physician, documented the burn, and returned your computer for a new one, and for something say, a free iPod for your pain.
    Sorry you got hurt, I think you should have your heat issue professionally investigated through apple care

  • Thread Safety Issue with DOM

    I am parsing an XML into a DOM object using the Xerces parser that is packaged with JDK 1.5.
    First, I create a new instance of the DocumentBuilderFactory and then using the factory, create a new DocumentBuilder. I then parse the XML using the DocumentBuilder to obtain a DOM object.
    Somehow, I am seeing the same DOM object being used for different XMLs.
    Is there a thread safety issue with the Xerces parser?

    certainly, Xerces parser is not thread safe. You have to provide thread safety by making sure that only one thread is allowed to access DocumentBuilder object.

  • SAP EHS Safety Issue mobile app on SMP 3.0

    Hi,
    I'm on the process of installing and configuring the SAP EHS Safety Issue mobile app on SMP 3.0. However, the current Administrator guide hasn't been updated since SMP 2.3.
    Has anyone attempted to install this app on SMP 3.0? Any idea how this should be configured? Should it use the SAP Management Console or the Gateway Management Cockpit?
    Also, does anyone has previous experience working with this app? How can I test the OData services without going through SMP?
    Kind regards,
    Omar

    For anyone interested, here's some details:
    The HTTP method implemented by the service is: http://<SAPserver>:8000/sap/opu/odata/EHSMM01/LWM_SAFETY_OBSERVAT
    When you configure the app, you need to set this up as your backend endpoint. You can also set this up as your HTTP authentication for your security profile.
    You don't need to use the Gateway Management Cockpit. Just create an application with app ID:
    com.sap.bsuite.erp.ehsm.safetyobserver
    and use the above information for the backend and security profiles.
    That's all!

  • THREAD SAFETY ISSUE OF SERVLET

    It is possible that one instance of a sevlet is accessed by multiple
    client , then how is the concurrency issue taken care of? Especually thread safety?

    It's not, you have to handle it yourself.
    That's why it's a good idea to never put instance variables in servlets. The basic technique is to store anything you need to save between requests in the current user's session (which you get by calling request.getSession()). During a call to service() (or, more frequently, to doGet or doPost, you're safe if you use whatever is present in the request and response argument, including servlet config parameters, request parameters, request attributes, and session attributes.
    If you want to write some "real" servlet app, you should have a look at one of the frameworks, like Jakarta Struts or OpenSymphony WebWorks.

  • Does SimpleDateFormat still have Thread Safety Issue in jdk 1.4.2_8?

    Hi,
    We are using jdk1.4.2_08 and experience following error message intermittently, sometimes once in 5000 or 10000 or 2/3 times in 20000 message processing.
    On one occassion, it reported as Empty String and other time it reported as ".20042005E200420054E". I won't suspect the input that's coming to this class since it works with same message over and over.

    It seems like some people have reported BugID 4228335 and there are few associated bugs. I assumed these are fixed in jdk1.4.
    Can anyone please suggest if this kind of issues still exist in jdk1.4.2?
    Here is the piece of code.
    private static SimpleDateFormat DATE_FORMAT = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss");
    public Object convert(Class type, Object inValue) {
    if(inValue == null)
    return null;
    NFDate ret = (NFDate) ClassDirectoryFactory.GetInstance().getClassInstance(NFDate.CLASS_KEY);
    if (inValue instanceof Date) {
    ret.setDate((Date)inValue);
    } else if (inValue instanceof String) {
    String str = inValue.toString();
    if (str != null && str.length() > 0) {
    DateFormat format = DateFormat.getDateTimeInstance();
    format.setLenient(true);
    try {
    ret.setDate(format.parse(str));
    } catch (ParseException e) {
    try {
    ret.setDate(DATE_FORMAT.parse(str));
    } catch (ParseException e1) {
    throw new DateConversionException("Unable to convert the String to NFDate. " +
    "Exception: " + e + " - expected format is (" + format.format(new Date()) + ")", e1);
    else {
    if (!ret.getIsNullDate()) ret.reset();
    } else {
    String msg = "Conversion from " + inValue.getClass().getName() + " to " + NFDate.class.getName() +
    " is not supported";
    throw new DateConversionException(msg);
    return ret;
    Thanks much in advance.
    Saikat

    It doesn't look like the format classes will ever be made thread safe. The fact that they aren't isn't a bug, it is a design choice that Sun made. If you need them to be thread safe, then you will have to do the synchronization yourself.
    If you have a finite number of threads for you application (like a thread pool) then you might consider using ThreadLocal so that separate threads will not be trying to access the same formatter.

  • Type safety issue

    Hi All,
    Running the below code, works fine. but my expectation says the code in setobject method should throw Class CastException.
    But this is not happening.
    Is this a bug in jdk6. The type inintially defined as Integer afterwards converts into String.
    public class Test<T> {
         private T value;
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              Test<Integer> test = new Test<Integer>();
              test.setObject("Test");
         private void setObject(Object obj) {
              try {
                   value = (T)obj;
                   System.out.println(value);
              } catch (ClassCastException castException) {
                   castException.printStackTrace();
    }

    s_adi_bilaye wrote:
    There is indeed a run-time type safety check at the cast operationIf there is an downcast from Object to the specific <T> in this case <Integer> then there needs to be an exception which is raised if there is a runtime type safety check.
    When we dont use generics we get the runtime type safety check and a class cast exception is thrown.
    Since no exception is raised at the cast line I understand that when we use generics there is no type safety check at the runtime for the "generic object". This explanation is also aligned with the generics documentation.
    This is not quite correct. Your code would throw ClassCastExceptions due to compiler-generated casts if there were any.
    You are declaring a List of Integers. Then you deliberately cheat the type-checks by using the "raw" type List to insert a String into the List.
    So far, so good: no exception because of the cheating.
    But after that, you never access the list's elements in a way that warrant a compiler-generated cast!
    This line:
    System.out.println(list.get(i));uses the overload PrintStream.println(Object).
    Thus, the smart compiler decides that there is no need to first cast the list element to Integer and then immediately back to Object!
    You can double-check by changing the line to:
    System.out.println(list.get(i).intValue());Now the overload PrintStream.println(int) will be used, triggering the necessary cast to Integer, which will then throw a ClassCastException.

  • Scion IPOD Integration Question and Safety Issue

    I have a 2007 Scion TC with the factory pioneer stereo with ipod connection and control from the stereo buttons.
    Does anyone know how to fix the problem where when you start scrolling through which song/album you want to select, and then you take a couple of moments to actually drive, the thing resets to the beginning and you have to start all over? This actually forces you to try to keep controlling it if you started to select something new at a stoplight because you don't want to start from the beginning. This is a usability and safety concern and I could see them getting sued for this if someone wrecked.
    Max

    I can pretty much guarantee that Apple would like to know about your experience, as this is at least a potential safety thing. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the iPod in to an Apple retail store for evaluation.
    Best of luck.

  • My display screen on my iphone 5 pops out + safety issue.

    I've pre-ordered my iPhone 5 in Australia and have been using it since.
    Until recently, I've noticed that the left side of the display pops outs, and the screen shows bend marks when attempting to push it back(which it pops back out).
    Additionally, when I'm charging it or its connected to my laptop, I'll sometimes get electrocuted as I grip it in my hands.
    I wish to send it in for repair, despite its warranty has expired a while ago.
    HOWEVER, my problem is that I'm living in Taiwan right now, and I won't be returning to Australia.
    I've contacted the Apple Store in Taiwan and they told me there's nothing that they can do for me because my iPhone's not from Taiwan. They advised me to contact Apple Store in Australia, and here I am.......

    Unless Australia's Apple store is paying for my flight, I don't see how this is acceptable. It's their product's safety that puts me at risk whenever I make a phone call. This phone has not been dropped in liquid, hard surface, nor has it been in environments that may cause deformation. I do not want Apple to give me a new phone or anything, I even told Apple Store Taiwan again that I'm willing to pay the repair cost (since my warranty is gone). Just because my phone is Australian, they refuse to point me in ANY direction other than Australia.

  • SCXI1102, 1104, 1581 input/output connection safety issue

    I have a testing rack that contains a PXI-1011 chassis with SCXI1102,
    1104 and 1581 cards.  We use the SCXI 1300 & 1303 terminal
    blocks to connect to the cards.  The wiring from the terminal
    blocks go to a custom rack connector that we use.  To validate the
    proper operation of the daq we connect a breakout box to our custom
    rack connector so that we may perform such tasks as connecting a
    calibrated voltage source or connecting a picoammeter  to verify
    proper operation.  My question is - are there any safety concerns
    (to both hardware and personnel) of connecting our breakout box to the
    rack (essentially to the card terminal blocks) while the chassis and
    cards are powered on?  Or should we power off the unit prior to
    connecting to its terminals?  Please confirm.

    kmchiang,
    Of course, it is always safer to power down your system whenever making
    connections. If you do not wish to do this, however, I would reccomend
    disconnecting the terminal block from the module. This will prevent any
    of the high voltage pins of your 1104 from being exposed. Finally, if
    you wish to disconnect your measurements at the custom rack connector,
    the equipment should not suffer any damage. Because I do not know the
    details of your custom setup, I cannot comment on the personal safety.
    Hope this helps,

    Just as of today...when I use the search in google,every website listed has a message under the title, "This website may harm your computer"
    I can go directly to websites I know by typing the address in, but when I use the search in either Firefox or Safari, I get that warning, and the site is blocked if I try to click on it anyway.

  • Safety issue: Another user can access some read only folders of mine

    Hi,
    big, serious problem: I had created a simple account user for guest access on my 10.5.7 system. Now i logged into this account, opened the finder and browsed my supervisor's home directory. Some folders i had created in there were readable (including the websites folder). Okay, they were set to readable (read only, not read write) according to the Information Window (CMD-I).
    But when i browsed them i decided to delete a file. I selected the file, hit the delete button and wooosh away it was. What the f..? I wasn't even asked for my supervisor' s password. It just had deleted the file.
    Crosschecking by creating a new folder and moving it into the very same directory revealed i had write access. NOT GOOD! (scream!)
    Anyone had the same shocking experience of OS X being not safe?
    However, after i changed the permissions of the respective folders to "no permissions" and then changed them back to "read only", they at least were read only.
    But hey - how can I tell which folders of mine are really safe? I can't check up every folder if another user on my system has "by accident" write permissions to a folder which reads "read only" in the Information Window.
    Help!

    The exact Information of the Info Window:

    now I'm completely confused. are you saying that you can write to this folder from a different account which is not an admin account?? that should not be possible based on these permissions. please double-check and make sure that the other account is not listed as admin in system preferences->accounts.
    also, these permissions are wrong anyway. did you change them yourself? the default permissions on a newly created folder in your home directory should look quite different. log in as your main user and make a folder at the top level of your home directory. what are the permissions there?
    P.S. the unknown user you see is quite normal if you upgraded to leopard from Tiger.
    My account is an admin account.
