Safety of accessing Apple Software RAID under Windows XP/Ubuntu

I've got 2 500GB external USB drives that I've RAIDed together to form a mirrored 500gb drive. I use this to store most of my important documents, along with movies, photos and music. I also use this drive for my Time Machine backups. These disks use the GPT partitioning scheme.
I have Windows XP and Ubuntu installed on my machine along side Mac OS X. Under XP I have MacDrive installed so that I can read/write to any HFS+ partition. I also have an ext3 driver installed under XP so I can read/write to my Ubuntu partition.
Under XP: Unfortunately, since my external drives are partitioned using the GPT scheme, Windows XP only recognizes them as EFI protective disks, and hence MacDrive cannot read/write to the HFS+ RAID volumes.
Under Ubuntu: Both of the RAID volumes mount as read only, which is fine for me. This works because Ubuntu can read the GPT table.
My solution: Apple's bootcamp utility creates a GPT/MBR hybrid by mirroring the contents of the GPT to the MBR. My solution was to modify the MBR of one of my RAID disks so that it mirrors the GPT:
fdisk /dev/disk2
Disk: /dev/disk2 geometry: 60801/255/63 [976773168 sectors]
Signature: 0xAA55
Starting Ending
#: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size]
1: EE 0 0 2 - 1023 254 63 [ 1 409639] <Unknown ID>
2: AF 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63 [ 409640 976101344] HFS+
gpt -r show disk2
gpt show: disk2: Suspicious MBR at sector 0
start size index contents
0 1 MBR
1 1 Pri GPT header
2 32 Pri GPT table
34 6
40 409600 1 GPT part - C12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B
409640 976101344 2 GPT part - 52414944-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC
976510984 262144 3 GPT part - 426F6F74-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC
976773128 7
976773135 32 Sec GPT table
976773167 1 Sec GPT header
As you can see, I made a new entry in the MBR to mirror the Apple RAID partition (index 2) in the GPT. And it "works". Windows XP's Disk Management console shows the disk as having 2 partitions, and MacDrive mounts, and reads the HFS+/RAID partition.
But my question is... How safe is this? If I write to the RAID partition under XP or Ubuntu (if i mount the drive as r/w), will the RAID set be rebuilt automatically under OS X, or will the modifications go unnoticed? How does Apples software RAID detect modifications to the disk? Does it checksum the HFS+ directory and compare them at mount time?
Thanks,
Adam

TM is a bunch of hard links (aliases that get you the actual file), unlike regular aliases, or Windows shortcuts. You DO NOT want this fixed. It's what makes TM so great. Windows may not be up to it yet.

  • Forum : Apple Software Update for Windows

Anyway we could get a notification at the top of the Forum : Apple Software Update for Windows
Something in red with big letters similar to at the top of the discussion forum page as it seems that the majority of the posts in there have nothing to do with the Software Update for Windows software.
Just to let people know that the forum is for something in particular not a place to post random queries.
I was clicking through trying to find some info (that i couldn't think of the right words for so didn't search) and the amount of unrelated stuff in there is surprising.
Anyway thought i'd bring it to peoples and hopefully the hosts attention, and figured something at the top to advise people of the actual use of that forum might help cut down on the dross.

The Hosts might be willing to give it a try, but I'd wager a cookie that it wouldn't help. There are huge red letters above this forum telling people not to post technical questions here, but people do it all the time anyway. It can be annoying, I know, but people often just seem to get focused on what it is they're after and just don't notice they're in the wrong place, or they're confused and/or frustrated and post in the first place they can find. There's not much that can be done other than to gently redirect them to a more appropriate place to get assistance (and if you're Level 2 or above, you can notify on the post and ask that it be moved to the correct forum).

  • Upgrade to I-Tunes 7.4.2 with Apple Software Update for Windows

I upgraded to I-Tunes 7.4.2 and that went great. But I was also offered an Apple Software Update for Windows which would not install. The error message said something about a part of it not being able to run. Is this a Vista thing? I still have Windows XP and don't plan to change to Vista. Will I have issues with newer versions of I-Tunes if I can't get this Software Update for Windows to install?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the replies, but what I am hoping for is a solution.
Even though I asked, you never said if you have an ASU 2.0.0.21 ... so this solution runs the risk of being irrelevant to your situation. (It applies to the issue of ASU 2.0.0.21 on an XP PC returning an "invalid signature" message when trying to download an ASU 2.1.0.101.)
If that's what you've got here, then usually a software installer bundle from Apple which contains a higher version of ASU than the 2.0.0.21 will install on the PC in question.
(Avoid using the BonJour for Windows 1.0.4 standalone installer just at the moment, as a precaution. Last time I checked, about 20 minutes ago, that still contained an ASU 2.0.0.21, and that won't get you any further forward than you currently are ... assuming that you've currently got an ASU 2.0.0.21 in place.)
So download and install another Apple installer bundle. Here's a link through to the QuickTime Standalone installer, although the Safari for Windows or iTunes installer would also work:
Latest Quicktime Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention iTunes
That should, as part of the install, update your ASU to version 2.1.0.101. To check on that, launch ASU ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"), go "Help > About Apple Software Update" and check the version number. If you're now at ASU 2.1.0.101, you're past the problem with ASU 2.0.0.21 returning an 'Invalid signature" message when trying to install an ASU 2.1.0.101 (assuming that's the particular problem you were actually experiencing).
You can then uninstall QuickTime for Windows (or Safari for Windows, or iTunes and QuickTime and Apple Mobile Device Support, depending on what installer you used to update your ASU version) through your Add/Remove programs control panel.

  • Should I let it install "Apple software update for windows 2.0.2"?

Thanks, in advance... it may just be a ditz of a question.
Running Vista and when in Mac occasionally run Parallels, Apple Software Update window popped and this update appeared:
Apple software update for windows 2.0.2 with the description
"This update includes general fixes and renews the root certificate that authenticates software delivered via Apple Software Update."
I figure it was logical enough considering the obvious link but the description just looked to vague. So, I put it off... today searching the internet, Apple Help and so on for this "update" cannot find it anywhere. I have already had problems with file corruption so "fixing root certificates" unnecessarily is not ideal.
Anyone else know one way or another or just tell it to go away for good?
    Thank you,
    Kylie

I never actually use Software Update excep to tell me there is something (if I hadn't read about it). I go to the standalone downloads. There was one for QuickTime for Windows that you DO want.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
It sounds like Software Update for Windows, and that probably does deserve installing (I use x64 and don't really trust support yet or installers from Apple for now) so I have Apple software update in vista turned off.
I do have the 9-17-2007 2.0.2 "Apple Software Update for Windows" installed.
Why I don't trust Apple: alerts and UAC's are always hidden behind the installer window in front. I just tried to close the windows or dialogue box for Apple Software Update Preferences, it asked for UAC and went black, but I can't even close the box even though all I did was hit "Okay" button. So its 'hung' now.
Apple needs to improve the installer for Vista - a lot. I like not having to type a password every time, that has gotten old after 6 yrs.

Okay. Rather than using Apple Software Update, let's try updating your iTunes using an installer downloaded from the following location:

Does the install using the iTunesSetup.exe from there go through any better? If not, what error message do you get from that?

  • Apple software update for windows box that pops up changed to diff.language

Hey, Everyone. The little window that pops up for "apple software update for windows" and lets me know when I have an update for itunes, quicktime, etc. has changed languages. Now it shows up in Spanish. My itunes, quicktime, etc. are all in English, as well as my OS (Win XP,SP3) so I don't know how that one application could have changed. Luckily I can understand Spanish but just wondering if there's a way to change it back.
    Thanks!

    Hi Troy,
I had the same issue as you. All of a sudden the Software Update window was in swedish. After uninstalling and reinstalling ASU a few times I realised there was no need for it at all. All you have to do is go to Control Panel, Clock Language and Region, Regional and Language Options, Administrative, and then Change System Locale. I changed mine back to English (United States), restarted and voila, it was fixed! I hope this works for you too.
EDIT: Just noticed you are running XP. I am on Vista but it shouldn't be too different I suppose.

  • "Apple Software Update for Windows" has an invalid signature.

Hi. Iam trying to update from iTunes 7.3.2.6 to iTunes 7.6.2 but always get this message: "Apple Software Update for Windows" has an invalid signature. It will not be installed. Can anybody help me wth this?

always get this message: "Apple Software Update for Windows" has an invalid signature. It will not be installed.
There is a problem on some XP machines where Apple Software Update for Windows version 2.0.0.21 will always return an invalid signature message when trying to update to ASU 2.1.0.110. Since it tries to do that prior to updating other software, the update of the other software is blocked. (To check what version of ASU you have, launch ASU by going "Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update", and then in ASU go "Help > About Apple Software Update".)
The way around that issue (if that's what you've got) is to update itunes using the link to the iTunes installer that Jefe gave you in his/her post. That iTunes installer will also update your ASU to at least ASU version 2.0.2.92 which should then be able to successfully update itself to ASU 2.1.0.110 next time you run ASU.

  • Apple software RAID 0 not spinning down while not in use

I have a G-Tech G-RAID w/ Thunderbolt, 8TB external enclosure.  It has two 4TB fujitsu drives in it, set up as RAID 0 with Apple's Disk Utility v13 (426) that ships with 10.8 Mountain Lion.  This is attached to a very cleanly installed Mid 2011 Mac Mini, which is acting as a media server.  There is basically no 3rd party software on it, because it's acting as a NFS filer server for streaming digital players around the house.
However, I have the G-RAID set to spin down when possible in energy saver, and it's not.  It never spins down.  I have 4 external drives on this media server, ranging from USB to FW800 to the Thunderbolt drive, all from different manufacturers, and different sizes and models.  All the other drives spin down after 10 minutes.
Not only is the checkbox "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" checked in Energy Saver, but a
    pmset -g
reveals that the "disksleep" is set to 10 (min).
In frustration, I have tried a lot of things including (but not limited to) removing all other hard drives and hardware, starting up with shift held (safe boot) and removing any software at all that I thought would be keeping the drive "alive."
Finally I decided to start monitoring the drive with fs_usage, to see if I could suss out what is keeping this one drive alive.
"fs_usage | grep DISKNAME" reveals that SystemUIServer is accessing the drive every minute, about seven times in a clump.  Considering that SystemUIServer is the peice of software that controls the little menu add-ons to the right of the menubar, I have spend a great deal of time trying to figure out what would use SystemUIServer that is accessing this drive.
Now it's true that this drive is set up as a time machine drive, but I have disabled time machine, and spotlight, and still I get the same SystemUIServer accesses every minute.  Here is a fs_usage dump:
    orion:~ seanb$ sudo fs_usage | grep Betelgeuse
    Password:
    15:53:16  getattrlist       /Volumes/Betelgeuse     0.000029   SystemUIServ

    15:55:17  statfs64          /Volumes/Betelgeuse     0.000014   SystemUIServ
As you can see, it's the same seven drive accesses every minute.  This is NOT occuring with any of my other drives.  Now, here comes my wild conjecture.  Is this something the system does because they are RAID slices?  Do OS X software RAID slices check themselves every minute? This seems to be preventing them from sleeping.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm going nuts here.

The second column in your fs_usage report says that iStat Menus is what is accessing your disk (Istat64).  Disable iStat Menus and I bet your issue will go away.  I know there is a module in iStat Menus to monitor drive space, but if I recall correctly, even if that module is disabled, iStat has a habit of checking drives anyhow.  I remember hearing people getting rid of istat menus in order to allow their HDs to sleep propely.
In fact, and easy way to test this would be to reboot your Mac with the shift key held down until you see your desktop load up.  This will prevent 3rd party add-ons from loading like iStat Menus. Let me know if that works.
Unfortunatrly this is not the problem I am having, as I've booted with shift, and I still see the  "getattrlist" accesses in my fs_usage report.
EDIT: stupid font made your report look like iStat when it was Lstat.  So what I said about iStat Menus is probably incorrect.  But using the shift key to boot could still lead you to the correct anwer.  I'm doing testing on my end as well. Let you know if I see anything that pertains to your issue.  (I got an Lstat entry in my fs_usage when I open the drive during testing, but I have not beeing getting them an regular intervals like you do.  I would still guess that you have 3rd party software that is checking on drives periodically, and that holding shift might suss that out.)

  • Apple software update for windows does not work properly

Apple software update does not work properly

I FIXED IT!! I can't believe it . I actually figured out how to make it work(well sort of). My Apple Software Updater now works (almost) perfectly and I just successfully downloaded and installed itunes 10.6.3.25 through it!!!
Ok , the way I see it, either the latest itunes update or the recent Windows Patch Tuesday on June 12th, 2012 must have inadvertently removed the Administrative Rights from the Apple Software Update Tool .lnk file.
So you must go to where the file resides on your hard drive - for me that was C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs - Right click on the Apple software Tool icon and choose properties. Click on the compatibility tab. At the bottom of this tab click on "change settings for all users" and hit Yes at the UAC pop-up. Now make sure you place a check in the "Run this program as Administrator" under the Privilege level section at the bottom. Hit Apply and then OK. The hit Ok again to get off the properties pop-up.
When I went back and clicked on the Apple Software Update shortcut, I got a UAC pop-up asking me if I wanted to proceed(something I had always, in the past, gotten but haven't since this problem started). The Apple Software Update tool came up and to my suprise the progress bar STAYED and started to slowly fill up partially with the green progress bar. Viola, the itunes 10.6.3 update showed up on the top part of the screen as a new update needing to be installed - the bottom screen, as usual, had the changelog info for the 10.6.3 update. I clicked on install and , again, Viola. the update downloaded and installed flawlessly. I had to reboot my computer and when it restarted, itunes was working perfectly and it was correctly showing as itunes v10.6.3.25.
I say it is almost or sort of fixed because when you click on the Apple Software Update shortcut after the 10.6.3 install it goes back to doing the same thing it did before(i.e. processing for a second and then saying there are new updates but showing a blank field). Maybe this is the way the software now looks if there are no updates available to install - maybe Apple is working on this to eventually get it back to normal. All I know is the process I outlined above worked for me(at least to get the ASU to recognize and properly download and install itunes 10.6.3). It's certainly not perfect, but it worked. Please try this method and let me know what results you have with it. Good luck.
