Safety of existing selections when reinstalling iTunes.

I have an existing iTunes account with just under 16000 songs on it.  About 3000 of those songs are checked, and those are the ones I want to sync to my "new" 6th gen nano.  If, in the process of getting that to work, I have to reinstall the newest version of iTunes over the old one, will it erase all of those check marks?  It would take me all night (maybe all weekend) to go through and recheck all of those songs.  I will do it if I have to, but I don't really want to pull the trigger until I know what will happen, and I'm sure that's the only way. FYI, I currently have itunes version 11.0.2.26 installed.  For all I know, that is the current version.

You mean iTunes library. An iTunes account is what you use to purchase from the iTunes store.
About 3000 of those songs are checked, and those are the ones I want to sync to my "new" 6th gen nano.
You would be far better off leaving everything checked, creating a playlist to sync and syncing only that playlist instead of using checkmarks.
If, in the process of getting that to work, I have to reinstall the newest version of iTunes over the old one, will it erase all of those check marks?
No.
However, you do have a backup of the entire /Music/iTunes folder, correct?
The iTunes library info is in the /Music/iTunes/iTunes library.itl file.

How do I fix "apple mobile device" failure when reinstalling itunes on my PC?

    Hey chadnh11,
It sounds to me like you uninstalled then attempted to reinstall iTunes to troubleshoot the issue you were encountering? First, I would try the steps in here:
How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
If you end up getting to the point where you remove and reinstall iTunes, make sure you follow all of the steps in this link:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
This section contains information that might help your situation, as the order and manner which you uninstall has an effect on the outcome:
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
Let us know if following that article and uninstalling those components in that order helped the situation.
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
    Sincerely,

  • How do I fix this errror when reinstalling itunes

I am trying to reinstall itunes and i am having an issue. I keep getting an error while trying to install and I keep getting very far but I always seem to end up with this.
    "Could not open key
    UNKNOWN\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF…
    \b25099274a207264182f8181add555d0.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel"
I was attempting to reinstall due to an error message appearing when I opened itunes
"Itunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support Please uninstall
both Apple Mobile Device Support and iTunes, then install iTunes again."
I have tried a few solutions and for the first error when installing one was an attempt at editing a registry file which I do not think succeeded because I am running windows 8 and was being directed for windows 7.
I have attempted to use this post but it is again about windows 7 and after I select permissions under components is where windows 8 seems to change slightly in comparison to windows 7. I did try only the further steps though and that also did not work.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.
The further information area also has notes on your first issue.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Will I lose existing music when downloading itunes 11?

If I download Itunes 11.1 from the apple website, will I lose all my existing music?

    Hello Haley,
Thank you for your question.  Updating your iTunes or reinstalling iTunes will not affect the music you have stored in iTunes.  The iTunes application and your iTunes media files are stored in two different locations so that you can reinstall iTunes without losing any media.
The following article has more information about where your iTunes media files are located:
Where are my iTunes files located?

  • Wiped computer and when reinstalling itunes my apps are all gone?

Ok, first time poster here and I would like to mention I am a complete n00b at all this computer related business so please don't make fun :P
My computer was acting funny so I decided to wipe/restore it. Today I reinstalled itunes and when I logged into my account I noticed everything was gone under my application purchaces. I've bought many apps and now I'm kind of scared to plug in my itouch for fear of losing all my purchaces when I sync it to my newly wiped computer.
I've tried searching the support on here, but like I mentioned before, I kind of suck and get way too confused at everything computer related. Did wiping my computer essentially permanently delete all my bought apps?

You can transfer you iTunes purchases to your now "new" computer by"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
You can also redownload app at no additional cost. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
Since you now have what appears to be a "new" iTunes library, you will not be able to backup to the "new" computer. After you move /get you stuff on the "new" computer I would let the computer/iTunes erase your iPod and replace it with the contents in iTunes on the new computer. All you app data will be lost. If you have any non-iTunes purchased music you can move that to your new computer by:

  • How to preserve my library when reinstalling iTunes?

Hi, I'm about to reinstall iTunes, but I have a question before I do. Is it possible to keep my library exactly the way it was before the reinstall? If so, how would I do it? I'm using Windows Vista Home Basic.

so um I'm moving my files from my computer to my mybook. And i unintentionally removed itunes in the process....so how do i recover all my music and playlists. I have a lot of music and for some reason i have a lot of duplicates. And i do not feel like sitting at my computer for 6 hours deleting every single duplicate and recreating all my playlists. Or do i have to it this way? any help would be great thanks.

  • Quicktime Error When Reinstalling iTunes

    Hello,
I recently had some problems with iTunes on my desktop which required me to reinstall the software. After reinstalling the software and trying to run it, it gave me an error message saying I had to install a later version of Quicktime. I downloaded the newest version of Quicktime and tried to install it and got an error saying the version I tried to install was older than the version I had installed. I then uninstalled both iTunes and Quicktime and removed registry entries with the program Registry Mechanic and reinstalled iTunes WITH Quicktime included. I received the same error message saying I had to install a later version of Quicktime. I then tried to reinstall Quicktime and got the same error I received before. iTunes and my ipod both work fine on my laptop, so the problem seems to be just with my desktop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hey try opening quicktime. Thats what i did, and after getting it up and running, iTunes started working again.

  • HELP! Insufficient privileges messages when reinstalling iTunes!

I tried upgrading to 10.1 when I got my new iPhone and got insufficient privileges messages for Bonjor, Common Files and other areas. I read some threads and it said to uninstall and then reinstall.
I went to control panel and deleted:
    itunes
    bonjour
    quicktime
all Apple folders: Mobile, Apple application Support, etc.
When I tried to reinstall from the itunes page I still go these messages again. Here is a sample of what I'm getting:
When I get the message that I don't have privileges, I am given two options to either "retry" or "cancel" --"retry" just keeps throwing the error up. I was forced to click "cancel" both times.
Following hitting cancel twice I got an "installation interrupted" message telling me that the installation had failed.
Following the errors recommendation, I logged off and relogged on as the administrator. I received all the same errors and the same failed installation.
NOW I have no iTUNES!!! Please help!

Hi there, this is what had to do.
First a bit background. I got the same errors. Insufficient privies for this and that. Logged in as Admin, same problem. Gave my user account Admin rights, still same problem.. now it actually said only 'Creator/Users' can install etc.
So long story short deleting, rebooting, magic... all failed.
    1. I uninstalled all Apple software!!
    2. yes all of it. Uninstall programs. Uninstalled Apple stuff, then Bonjour then Quick time.
    3. tried to delete folders that were left behind, got smacked with insufficient rights to do so.
    4. Logged in as Admin (that will teach ya Win 7)
    5. Used Unlocker and LockHunter. I was able to unlock/kill process of some files and was able to delete some folders, but not all (grrrr)
    6. disabled AntiVirus/Spyware program
    7. that allowed me to delete all folders (wth? .. okay then)
    8. went into registry and Searched for 'Apple'
    9. fainted when I saw hundreds of Apple entries.
    10. deleted all obvious 'Apple', 'MobileMe' and 'Quicktime entries', take care not to delete 'Applet...' stuff. Not the same. Like I said I only got rid of obvious Apple software stuff.
    11. finally I ran CCleaner (great app, get it and donate a couple of $$) and had it scan, back up and clean my registry.
12 rebooted and logged in as me/user
13 checked /program files to make sure bonjour, apple and quicktime was really gone
    14. downloaded latets itunes
    15. installed itunes, did my back ups and updated ipod software
man that only took me a couple of hours

  • Getting error msg when reinstalling itunes - re compatibility

with MS office Xp - saying that itunes has not passed windows logo testing to verifiy it's compatibility.
Then if you ignore those and intall anyway, it now won't recognise my iphone. I already had to take the phone to a genius bar to get it restored after the os4 download killed it - now I can't put anything back on it.
    Please help!

There's something corrupt in your Windows XP. iTunes is certified for XP, Vista and Windows 7. Are you installing it using an account with administrator privileges? This is essential. It's also possible that Microsoft's Genuine Advantage doesn't recognize your Windows installation as being "official" (not pirated).

  • When reinstalling itunes it stops on "Status : Starting services "

The error mesg. reads Service "ipod service' (ipod service) failedto start. Verify that you have sufficient privilges to start system services. I have the option to either retry or cancel. Retry does not work and cancel just removes itunes icon. Did all the steps to remove all software twice. Did all work arounds that this support site said.

okay. that can happen sometimes if the itunes installer is having a hard time shutting down either itunes or quicktime (or applications using quicktime) prior to the install. so let's try a "download, restart, then install strategy."
    leave your ipod unplugged.
download and save a copy of the itunes installer to your hard drive. (do not run the install on line, and do not start the install by clicking on the iTunesSetup.exe (installer) file just yet.)
    iTunes 7.0.1.8 Installer
shut down running applications and restart the PC.
do not open any other applications prior to attempting the iTunes install. switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
now start the install by doubleclicking the iTunesSetup.exe file.
does the install go through properly this time?

  • Ipod crashed. reset. will not sync to itunes.  reinstalled itunes.  went threw all toubleshooting steps.  will not show up on my computer.

When checking my computer it is not recognizing the ipod input under devices.  Also when reinstalled itunes I have about three other peoples libraries on my share.  First of all, what do I need to do to get my computer to recognize the ipod.  Second what do I have to do to get rid of the other library's.  Third what do I have to do to get the ipod to sync with the itunes.

  • Reinstalling iTunes from scratch

An iTunes installation on a Windows 8.1 64bit PC got corrupted.
I am unable to completely remove the installed components to perform a fresh installation.
The most critical components looks to be the Mobile Device Support service, that remains confngured (in "Services") even after removing all the components.
When reinstalling iTunes the \mobile... directory is not created at all.
How can I completely remove the Mobile Device Support service in order to reinstall it?
    Regards

If Apple Mobile Device Support doesn't install this time around the section Install missing components will let you install just the missing AMDS instead of tearing everything down again.
