Sales assistant gave wrong info? battery life

i've had my macbook for about 7 months. ive noticed in the past month or so, my battery life has gone from lasting approximately 4 hours (with wireless turned on) to less than 2 hours.
the sales assistant told me the best way to preserve the long battery life was to only run it on the battery, and to only have it plugged in to charge it from 0%-100%. then, when it was back to 100%, to unplug it and run it on battery.
ive been reading some information about "calibration" and "cycle counts", and im worried that the information given to me was NOT right. i checked my cycle counts, and it is at 186!
i rely on my battery life for when im at uni in lecture halls with little access to an electric outlet, and 2 hours really wont cut it when i have classes 4 hrs long.
was the information given to me incorrect? should my battery life be longer given ive only had the computer 7 months?? what should i do to rectify this?
any advice is greatly appreciated, as im still a newbie!

The sales assistant is completely wrong, if that's indeed what he/she said. You do not want to be constantly running any lithium-based battery down to zero on a regular basis. That will shorten it's life, not lengthen it. You do want to occasionally run it down to where the computer goes to sleep - not more than once per month or once every two months - to keep the charging circuitry calibrated, but other than that, charge the system whenever you can, and keep it plugged in when you don't need to run on battery. Clearly when you're in lecture you'll have to run on battery and may run the battery to zero, but don't do it deliberately.
Batteries do at times prematurely fail, but whether that's the case with your system I can't say for sure. There are many factors that will affect how long a system will run on a single charge, including how much the hard drive or optical drive is used, how much time the system spends with the backlight on, whether you're using Airport and/or Bluetooth, and how hard the processor is working. So two hours might be normal for the system's use at that particular time.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and take the system in and discuss the problem with them. If the Genius diagnoses a defective battery, they should replace it under warranty.
Regards.

  • Gave wrong info to automated service follow up

We just received a follow up call checking on customer service from yesterday andaccidentally pressed the wrong button to indicate if he was satisfied.  He meant to indicate YES, and the service came from Ramesh.  Ramesh was beyond excellent - he was very patient, very thorough and very helpful.  In the end, the problem we were trying to solve turned out not be Verizon's issue, but a router hardware issue, but Ramesh tried everything he could to fix it for us.  We didn't want a bad mark on his effort since he tried so very hard, and since the automated phone call wouldn't let us correct our error, nor get to an operator, and since we've been unsuccessful trying to send this message through the website, we're trying to resolve it through Facebook and this Forum, since there didn't seem to be an appropriate place through the Contact us/Help Desk.  Thank you.

  • I am so annoyed, apple gave wrong info?

    Dear all,
i purchased an ipod nano today and was told by apple staff it has integrated support for nike+ so I dont need to buy a receiver...
I dont think this is true now...
    Can someone please clarify????
    thanks

Yes, this is incorrect. Only the 2nd gen touch has the built-in receiver.
The Nano has "integrated" support in that only the nano and touch can use the Nike+. The Nike+ is not usable with other iPods.

  • 8230 Battery life issue

I bought an 8230 last week and (even though I have bee playing a round with it quite a bit) I find the battery life to be horrendous.  I have needed to recharge the phone every night.  I have not been using Bluetooth and it's not Wi-Fi enabled so this isn't on either.  I have it with me at work however do not have access to playing with it too much.  Today for example I did not play with the phone and by mid afternoon (around 3PM) it had 1 yellow bar left, I had charged it overnight and it was unplugged arround 6:30 this morning.
Is it possible that I have a bad battery?  Or is this relatively normal?

From what I have been told it is normal. When I purchased my phone the sales representative told me the battery life was relatively short. We have all been told that it is best to let a battery run down before dischargin because if we recharge when the battery is only partially discharged then it "remembers" that charge point and will never be fully charged necessitating more frequent charges. The sales rep said that the Blackberry Batteries do not have a memory so it is not necessary to completely discharge them before recharging and it is ok to charge them each night even if the battery shows 3/4 charge left. As a result, I just place mine on the charger each evening regardless of the amount of charge left. Another user told me that leaving messages on your phone drains the battery but I don't know if that is true.
If you are not using it after a complete recharge and it discharges by mid-afternoon then you could possibly have a defective battery.

  • Macbook Air is not giving me 12 hours battery life!

I bought my Macbook Air 13" 8GB I5 a week ago and from the beginning it didn't gave me the battery life I was expecting to get.
I only used safari and itunes so I think this isn't normall. I already read much complaints about this issue but not yet a clear answer.
Is it just a problem that's gonna be solved with the next upgrade or should I take it back to the store?
I find this realy annoying and hope to get an answer!

  • T430s Windows 8 battery life

    Hello,
I have new Lenovo laptop, type T430s (2353-2QV). I was realized to try Windows 8 and reinstalled it using lenovo w8 drivers. But something is wrong with battery life. It is very weak. I was hope that I can use my laptop on battery more than 4 hours, but depens on usage, I can use it maximum for about 3 hours. And that is not right, from my point of view. I do not have informatiom how much time is battery life on W7, but I think it is much better.
Please, can anybody  tell me if it is right or not and what I can do with it? I welcome the response not only from users with same type of laptop.
    Thank you in advance.
    Peter

    Hello dissss,
    thank you for your reply.
I have the six cell battery. After one week of using my laptop on W8 I have to say that normally I can work about 3 hours on battery, which is weak for this professional laptop.

  • How do I get Backup Assistant to work on a Samsung SCH-u640? I can change the PIN, but I can't back-up (always says I entered the wrong PIN). This locks up the phone and is ruining the battery life!

I can set a PIN for Backup Assistant.
When Backup Assistant tries to run, it locks up and asks for the PIN.
I enter the PIN, and it's rejected as incorrect.
If I get a PIN reminder, it matches the PIN I entered!
This is really bothersome -- I can't stop Backup Assistant from running, and it won't work properly.
The result is the phone locks up until I manually close out of Backup Assistant.
And the battery runs down pretty quickly.
    Yecch!
    Any ideas? Please advise. Thanks!

Yecch is right! I'm sorry to see there have been issue with the Backup Assistant PIN. Can you recall when this started happening? Was there a PIN or phone change that happened prior to this happening?
When you go to Media Center>Browse and Download>BackUp Assistant>Options do you see an option sot Upgrade Check? If there isn't an option for that, power the phone off/on and please try to access it again.
Lastly, you should try to reset the application by following the steps here http://vz.to/1AHpMIo.
Please let me know what happens.

  • What is wrong with my phone if the battery life is draining while the phone is in the lock position?

Last night my phone just started getting extremely dim and I had it on the brightest setting. It was so dim you had to look at it under a light just to see what was on the screen. It then proceeded to lock down. I plugged it in but it would not charge. Finally, after almost an hour of being plugged in it finally started charging. It is acting completely normal except that it is constantly warm and the battery life keeps draining even when it is not in use. Does anyone know what is wrong with it? Can it be fixed? Normally, how much would this cost me? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Your phone is probably broken.

  • T420s hard drive noise / speed /battery life trade off and Screen Roll Cage Info

I know this is a brand new laptop but has anyone over at lenovo spent enough time with both the 7200 rpm and the 5400 rpm version of the 320GB hard drive in this laptop? I am trying to decide between ordering one and would like to get the 7200 rpm but I really dislike hard drive spinning noises in quiet environments. I am currently using the t400 with the 5400 RPM 320Gb drive (which I realize may be different from the drives in the new t420s) and do not find the noise objectionable but would like to get the 7200 in the t420s if there is no noise penalty and very little battery life penalty. Also, does the T420s have a "screen" roll cage like my current T400. I had heard that the T410 did away with the screen roll cages....
    Thank You for any assistance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The T420s's rollcage is made of a hybrid carbon fibre reinforced plastic. It's not metal since that interferes with the wireless signal.
It's apparently a bit better than the one the T510 has right now (which is the same carbon-reinforced plastic)- and the T410, with a "weaker" roll cage, should pass a 1.6 metre drop anyways.
I can vouch for that plastic's use since you can step on another laptop who's lid (I'm pretty sure it's made from this) is made from that (an old 600E) and it will survive.
Also, the noise isn't all that different for 5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM. The fan will be louder if you are using it.
And if you really hate hard drive sound and want a bigger boost than just an RPM bump, consider an SSD. That'll blow any hard drive out of the water in terms of speed, but will do the same to your wallet if you need anything larger than 40-60 GB. And, if you choose to do this, be aware that the T420s only takes SSD's that are 7mm high- so you'll probably need to get an X25-M or Intel 320 to accommodate that.

  • Is anyone else having a problem with the iPhone 4s Battery Life?  My 1 year old Iphone 4, which I gave to my wife, is holding a charge better and she has been using it far more than I've been using my 4s

My wife preordered a white iPhone 4s for our anniversary and even though it is preloaded with the ios 5, i am a little disappointed.  The battery doesn't seem to hold a charge well at all. I have had every other iphone except the 3gs and have never had such a poor battery life.  I owned the iPhone 4 for a year, and already know all the tricks to hold on to battery life, I have adopted the habit of closing out any apps that weren't being used, my mail push notifications are set for hourly, wifi and bluetooth are turned off when they aren't needed.  I also stay away from any car chargers, use only the apple brand supplied cables, and only charge when the phone is dead.  I only would sync when the phone was about to die as well.
When I saw how fast I was burning through the battery, I turned off Siri, which is kind of the purpose of the new iPhone, and turned off the backing up to iCloud.  I barely used my phone today and the battery kept ticking down.  My wife, who has been stuck with an iPhone 3g for years, has been fascinated with my old iPhone 4 and has been browsing and playing games and her battery has been holding a better charge than my new phone.  I even tried turning the phone off for an hour when it was at 18% and when I turned it back on, it was at 15%. My iPhone 2, which is only being used as a touch iPod now, still has better standby time than a brand new iPhone 4s.
To be honest, I am usually a heavy phone user.  Throughout the day I will make and receive at least 50 calls, I browse and check websites daily and watch videos sometimes during my downtime.  But this weekend, I haven't even had the chance to put this phone through the same abuse my other 3 iPhones have had to endure.
I just want to know if anyone else has this problem, or if I should just return this one.

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • Problems with stuck/dead pixels, battery life, ICS, and other problems

    Stuck/Dead Pixels:
I bought my Droid Razr at around the 21st of December last year. On or around Christmas, I found a bright red pixel on the very bottom of my screen. Unlucky for me, I was leaving for Florida on Christmas Night. I got back on December 31st. Sometime in the first week of this year, I visited my verizon store and told the customer service lady that I had a dead pixel on my screen and had just bought it. But, she told me that she needed the manager to fix this and there was no manager there. For the next week I was busy with school and sports etc and was not able to go back to the store. It was now past my 14 day return period. So I decided, its only one pixel, most people won't notice it anyway. So here I am 5 months later, just starting to discover more pixels dying on my screen. I now have the one bright red one, two light blue ones, and one dark red. I have no idea what the return policy is on defective phones, and the verizon site is designed so that you can't find anything. And an FYI, I have tried stuck pixel removers and other apps, which  haven't been successful.
    Battery Life:
I have also been finding more problems with my phone. The battery life is terrible when 4G and even 3G are on. I actually see no difference in battery consumption between 3G/4G.  My battery dies  about 4-5X faster when data is turned on, compared to using no data. I know it isn't because of the apps I installed since when I use WiFi, the battery is alright. I also make sure that my RAM isn't above 400MB, so that the processor doesn't use a lot of battery. I feel like I completely wasted my money buying the Razr. Mainly because of the fact that the Razr Maxx was announced two weeks later, which has about 80% more battery. Not only this, but I've seen the Razr selling for only ONE PENNY on amazon over the past month and it still is. I payed $300 on my Razr.
    Ice Cream Sandwich:
After these major problems comes another one, that I bet all Razr and Razr Maxx customers are still thinking about. When will I get Ice Cream Sandwich? It is very disappointing when you are told that you will be getting an upgrade in early 2012, and are still wondering where your upgrade is 5 full months in. From what I understand, we won't see an upgrade until the end of June, since Motorola has posted on their website that "rollouts" would begin in the second quarter. Even if they release it by the end of June, when will it get to your phone? Maybe another week or two for some people. This is another thing that I feel I wasted my money on. My brother told me to get the Nexus because of ICS, but I trusted Motorola that they would upgrade my phone in a timely manner. WRONG.
    Phone Freezing:
One more problem that I've had is that the phone will freeze. Usually you only need to turn the screen off and on, but once in a while, you have to completely reboot your phone. When I was coming back from Florida, right as I was about to get home, my phone completely froze. I was about to go return it, but after about 15-20 minutes, it became unfrozen.
    Motion Sensor not functioning:
Another problem, an annoying one, is that sometimes the motion sensor that controls portrait and landscape mode will just stop working. Some of the games I play are completely dependent on the motion sensor. It is very embarrassing  when you are trying to show off to an iPhone friend and major components of your phone aren't working. They always tell me "why didn't you get an iPhone?". And I really just wanted to have a phone that didn't look like everyone else's, but I guess that comes at a cost. When the motion sensor stops working, I have to shut down my phone and restart, which takes a couple minutes.
    Problems with camera:
My last problem would be with the camera. Sometimes if you bring the camera close to something, like a barcode, it will keep trying to focus, but never will. Another problem is photo quality in low light situations. It seems like the camera can't focus because it goes from being very dark into being bright because of the flash. I doubt this can be fixed because it's hardware, but a potential fix could be having the option to keep the LED light on during picture mode, that way the camera will be able to focus correctly.
    In Conclusion:
I really just want someone to tell me how to return my phone for a new one, due to the dead pixels. I also wish I could be upgraded to the Razr Maxx because of the poor battery life on the Razr, but from what other people are saying, that probably won't happen. And finally, if anyone has more info about Ice Cream Sandwich, that would be awesome.

Well since it's a Manufacturing Error it should Fall under your Warranty if you got one with your Razr. You know you can Call C.S. an they can Assist you with the Matter on it.. Just remember to have another phone so they can Trouble shoot the One that is Experiencing the Issue an when you talk to them go over thing. An they should send you C.G.A.N unless they request you to send it in before you get anther one. If you feel Better going to the Store try that. And Good Luck..

  • Massive battery life drop after Internet Recovery OS re-install

    Hey,
A couple months ago, I made the brilliant decision to try to install Windows 7 with Boot Camp at 3am on a weekend after several days of no sleep (unfortunately, this is one of the least-poor poor decisions I've made recently, but I suppose that's for another forum). Long story short, Og turn on MacBook, Og open Disk Utility, Og click-click, SSD go bye-bye—formatted, every last bit of it (haha, me make pun-pun!). Luckily, ML ships virtually tard-proofed, so there's little I can do besides showering with Bernie (this pun courtesy of the 'lil sis; I'm innocent) to make him breathe his last. This little bit of Apple genius is irrefutable proof of God—praised be his noodly appendage. But ever since Internet Recovery blessed me with Bernie II (R'amen), I've noticed during countless nights lying with him in bed that his stamina has decreased significantly, versus his pre-IR days. I can't give you firm numbers of his endurance before the operation, but now, after even the least vigourous play, he's drained beyond further exertion after no more than 2-2.5 hours. I've tried various tweaks to increase battery life—making sure his mail parts are only shooting off when I work them manually, the same for receiving messages as well, and I've been monitoring his GPU usage; thanks to ML he's much more conscientious about being discrete, and I rarely have to limit him to using his integrated components. (Note: I'm using writing this as an excuse to start an essay, and its foundation really needs to get laid ASAP, so unfortunately the allusions/euphemisms stop here.) Again, I can't give precise numbers about its original battery life, but I was blown away by it, likely averaging at or in excess of the advertised 7-hours. I'm a geek and spent my childhood with eyes never further than a couple of inches from my CRT (and have the vision to prove it), but I really have no f'ing clue what would be causing this. I never doubted that the battery life decreased (and dramatically so), but now that I've started booting up into Windows regularly, any trace of doubt has vanished. Using Windows 8 set on Maximum Performance (and, as I'm sure most of you are aware, Windows only uses the discrete GPU, even when doing nothing graphically-intensive), the battery life is still significantly better than using ML. I've searched and searched and searched and can't find a single reference to this issue online. I'd appreciate any help you can offer. Just in case it's of any assistance, I'll put some might-be-relevant-maybe info below, including things I've thought of that could be the source/contributing to the problem (again, I really have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to true geek know-how):
    - It's a rMBP 15" w/16GB RAM
    - When I formatted the HD, I wiped out everything. Yes, obviously there was enough on there for the laptop to launch into Internet Recovery, but I'm thinking that was all that was left. When I've been trying to think of why there's nobody online with this issue, something that's popped into my head is that anyone who knows what Disk Utility does is probably savvy enough (when not sleep-deprived) to not use it to format their HD, or at least to heed to the plenty of "Don't click yes, tardums" warnings that I'm sure popped up as I zoomed by them. And I can't think of many other ways for grandma-level Mac users to wipe their HD, so the lack of online info would make sense.
    - This was a couple months back, and I can't remember precisely the OS version when all this went down. I'm certain it was ML since I think my rMBP shipped with 10.8.0 (if not 10.8.1, if any did), but it could have been anything between 10.8.0 and 10.8.2. I'm pretty sure it wasn't 10.8.0 since I remember updating to 10.8.1 very soon after purchasing the laptop over the summer, but again, not certain.
Alright, that's it. I'm sure this post doesn't meet forum standards for plethora of reasons, but I'm a poor little private liberal arts university student who is desolate now that his $3,000 laptop isn't getting top-notch battery life, so mods, please dig deep in your hearts and don't delete. Thanks, yous da best.

There were a number of posts from folks with various models about a downgrade in battery life after an upgrade to Mountain Lion - so you aren't alone. However, since you're still under warranty, I would take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose the problem. Could be that your battery just isn't up to par (and I'm assuming that you've all updates installed?)...
    Good luck,

  • Terrible Battery Life - New MacBook Pro

OK, 4 weeks into my New MacBook Pro. MacBook Pro 15", 8GB Ram, 512GB SSD (Lion O/S as shipped). I know there are other threads but here's the full summary from my perspective.
Prior machine was MacBook Pro 17", 4GB Ram and 256 GB Hard Drive (Upgraded to Lion O/S). This older machine and the battery is 30 months old. It's awesome but I really needed more RAM and better battery life. Stumped over over $4000 for it.
I migrated virtually everything (Using Migration Assistant). Machine came up perfectly, works like a charm.
Except, the new machine gets only about an hour more at best than the old machine. The old machine was getting about 2.5 hours to 3 hours. I could get some work done on a plane and watch a 2 hour movie.
However, the new machine will only get me about 3 1/2 hours. I only get 2 1/2 hours if I watch a movie.
This is terrible. I have taken to Genius store and they agree the battery is fine and something is wrong but didn't have a fix. They and I since have tried all sorts of things at boot time to clean up errors, disk stuff, aplplied updates and all that. Basically, everything suggested in every forum. Some of these things actually have an effect on the "Time available" on the status bar, showing 7-8 hours for a while leading me into a false sense of security that a "fix" has worked. However, then after an hour or so of of use or booting from sleep, it's really averaging just 3 1/2 hours in real life, and sometimes just 3 hours.
I had a spare bettery for my old MacBook so could get 6-7 hours on a long haul flight. Now, I am dead at 3 hours in.
SInce Genius bar have confirmed machine is fine, and others have reported similar findings when going to Lion *AND* I have exactly the same apps on both machines... what the heck can it be?
Does anyone want to guess? Does someone from Apple want to "see" my machine in use?
HELP HELP HELP. PLEASE. This $4k machine is leaving me with a very sour taste.

Suppose you elaborate on what you are doing with the MBP that makes the battery life terrible.
