iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
- Transfer other music by using a third-party progtam like one of those discussed here
Copy music
- WHen everything is on your computr connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup. Do that by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not contain synced media like apps and music.

  • How add existing ipod content to newly installed notebook?

    Hi,
I bought my ipod video 30 Gb last week, and I am very happy with it.
I installed all content I wanted onto my ipod, but I was forced to reinstall my notebook, due to a virus.
All the content on my ipod is good, and I would like to restore this content into the local library of (my newly installed) iTunes.
    How should I do this?
It seems that on intial connection, I only have the option to change the ipod content to what my (newly installed iTunes, thus empty) library contains.
    Please help!

I have a similar but more embarrassing problem. I "moved to trash" yes I said moved to trash, my entire MUSIC folder from finder. While CAREFULLY opening Trash, somehow empty trash was selected and I've spent the last 6 hours trying to figure out how to get my "ipod selection", which amounts to approx. 70% of the lost itunes library, back into that library.
    PLEASE HELP ME! Thank you.

  • How to get music into iPod library other than with iTunes?

I am using an iPhone video editing app and want to add music to the clips. The option presented is to "add music from iPod library. I am presently traveling abroad and do not have my MacBook to sync music into my iPhone. There is tons of free music available online but the question is how to get any of it into my iPod library. I've tried a third party "download" app but it stores music inside the app, not in the iPod library. Are the only ways to put music in my iPod library either 1) sync from my MacBook or 2) buy from iTunes store? or are there other options?
    Thanks much.

The Jazz website you showed had Real audio files, and these won't be able to be played in the iPod app anyway.
But there are options for websites with mp3s.
There are apps that can play mp3s and make playlists, and some that can download music from legit websites and then play it.
Do a search for "mp3 play download" in the itunes store.
I have never needed one, but there are a few there that seem to offer what you are asking.
Theuy won't add the music to the ipod app, but they play themselves so that might be what you are looking for.

  • HT1296 I Want to sync my iPod content to newly installed iTunes on same PC after reinstall of iTunes (but it tells me iPod is synced with another library)

After my PC crashed (MicroSoft blue screen of death), I had to re-format my hard drive, reinstall Windows 7, and ultimately re-install iTunes. I have over 7000 songs on my iPod and want to load them into iTunes, but iTunes tells me my iPod is synced with another library and wants to overwrite my data.  How do I make this new version of iTunes accept all the info on my iPod into a new library? I have authorized this computer as one of 4 of my 5 allowed (note I have authorized this same machine 3 times due to Windows upgrades and iTunes reinstall...)

  • How to import from ipod to new os and itunes?

Had to replace my hard drive and reinstall itunes. How do i import the songs from the ipod to itunes? The music that is on the ipod was lost with the old hard drive. I hope there is some way besides updating the ipod with itunes erasing everything.

    Stanman,
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
XPlay (Software For Cross-Platform Functionality & Music Recovery)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes
-- One full set on an external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl).
Here is a post on developing a backup strategy: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=210939&messageID=1215125

  • How Do I transfer ipod library over to new itunes library

I recently got a new computer so i lost everyting in the transfer.  I have windows 8 and I am trying to move all the songs from my Ipod to my new library.  When I go into the music tab on itunes it says it will delete everything on the Ipod and replace it with the few songs in the new library.  It still shows me the songs on my ipod in the "on this ipod" tab but I dont know how to sync it

The ipod is not a storage/backup device.  The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.
You may be able to purchase a third party program to get the music - not supported by Apple.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Us eyour backup copy to move everything to the new computer.

  • Downloading music from existing ipod to computer not using iTunes

I was told from Apple tech support I would be able to find help here. I need to find a third party download source to download my iPod to it and then upload all of my music to iTunes. Long story short - original computer died, new computer won't recognize my iPod and it's musice - hence tech support and third party download software. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did you resolve?

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

No, it will sync the ipod to the content of the MBA which presumably has nothing on it (= erasing content of iPod and replacing it with nothing).

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • HT1386 I have a new computer and when I tried to sync my iPod Touch with the new iTunes, it has lost all of my music and videos from my iPod/old iTunes library: including all but 4 songs of my bought songs, videos and audeobooks!

I have recently updated my computer since my old one broke and therefore had to download a new iTunes. When I came to add my iPod to this new iTunes, I was given no option to transfer the contents of my iPod library to this new iTunes and was forced to try 'sync'; when my old computer was repaired once we lost all of our data so I had to download a new iTunes then, all of my iPod downloads were transferred and I could easily reburn my CDs so I didn't think the wiping of my iPod would be a problem. When I clicked 'sync' it warned me that it would replace the contents of my iPod with the new iTunes library, as I said I didn't think this would be a problembut then it asked if it should transfer my recent iTunes downloads so I said 'yes'. The sync was completed but now I only have 4 downloaded songs and 5 albums which I burned to my new iTunes! I have lost all the music I bought, all the videos I bought and all the audiobooks I bought! (Luckily I still have my apps.) I tried to restore backup but realised that only covers calendars, contacts E.T.C and I checked my iTunes account and that shows all my downloads but I can't see a way to restore them or anything like that!
Please help! I am in despair as you can imagine how much moneys worth I have lost and am losing faith in Apple

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • IPod is not recognised in iTunes

    Hi
This problem has been driving me up the wall! Basically my iPod is not being recognised in iTunes (doesn't appear in the source list) or the Updater. It is recognised in Windows Explorer as it comes up in my "safely remove hardware" section. I have followed the Apple website advice http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716.
I reinstalled COM interface, no luck. Went onto removing iTunes and reinstalled. No joy. I thought if I could completely restore my iPod it may shed some light but of course the Updater always says "Can't mount iPod".
I think I may have registered my iPod early this year, starting with a PC connection. Then updated it on a Mac. On the iPod menu>Setting>About>Format it still says Windows.
Hope the information helps with any solutions
    Thanks
    Steve

Jeff, and anyone else reading this. I did try assigning the iPod to another drive letter and it worked (to some extent). I'll run through what happened, including probably the one thing that I did completely wrong.
Before seeing this reply I thought I would completely wipe my iPod just by deleting the files through windows explorer (very silly, was just desperate). Came to deleting some of the music files and it said "...is not empty" so couldn't delete anymore.
Read the reply above and changed the drive letter, immediately informed my iPod did not have the latest update. Downloaded it and plugged it into my AC to charge (came up with that symbol). This is where it goes hazy, can't remember the complete order of events. Anyway, still no recognition from iTunes after a restart of the PC and iPod drive has reverted back to C. Changed back to N, goes through the process of Updater. I completely restore it and I think it came up with a command "Formatting failure. Disk write error". So I disconnect the iPod, comes up with the AC image and plug it in. GIves me choice of language, completely wiped the iPod without seemingly completing the restore on the computer.
Becomes hazy again. Tried to restore again (didn’t give the option of Updater as I have the latest on there now) and starts going through the process. It has now come up with a couple of messages while trying to restore “Formatting failure. Disk write error” and “Firmware update failure. Disk write error”. Also got a failure message on the toolbar “iTunes:iTunes.exe – Corrupt file. The file or directory \iPod_control is corrupt and unreadable – Please run the Chkdisk utility”.
By this time I had given up. Did the change of directory my brother’s iPod (always formatted for Windows) and his worked straight away. Out of curiosity I plugged mine in again, came up with the message error in the toolbar above but my iPod was suddenly recognised in iTunes. It reorganised the downloads, started uploading. Went to bed, left it on track 1690 loaded out of whatever it was. Computer was still on track 1690 in the morning, locked the computer. Restarted, checked my iPod, only 8 tracks had been loaded. Tried to restore, same messages. Now my iPod won’t turn on, accept to show the Apple logo and then the symbol with the folder and exclamation mark with the iPod support web address below.
Any ideas on what I should do? I can take it into an Apple store, but not for a while.
Sorry this is long but wanted to get as much detail down.
    Thanks
    Steve

  • Can you import a DVD of your own into iTunes?

I know you can choose from a very limited selection of films from the iTunes music store, but can you import one of your own films in the same way you import a CD and keep it on iTunes? And, of course, how would one go about doing this? When I insert a DVD, immediately Windows asks which program you want to play it in, and iTunes is not one of those programs.

I would suggest you "google" video iPod converter or do a search of the "using 5G iPod" forum where this subject has been discussed literally hundreds of times.

  • Importing songs from my existing ipod to a new itunes library

my pc had a virus and was cleared, I reinstalled itunes and my ipod library wont transfer from my ipod because i am only allowed 1 itunes account at a time. do i have to import all of my cds manually again?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
